One of my employees worked for Lou Kahn when Lou had his 3 wives. It was a good thing Lou’s office had 3 floors. Some days it was a real circus when 2 of the wives would show up at the same time. watch the movie, “My Architect”.

Frank Lloyd Wright really should be #1. He was the pioneer, "the bridge" between the 19th century and 20th century modernism. He employed open floor plans and modernist lines decades before the glass, concrete and steel boxes, using "older" materials like stone and wood.
please, Kahn asked Barragan to design significative parts of his work, Pei hired others ie Ramirez Vasquez to get mayor solutions, and were talkin about Architecture, including full program , good const quality, site desigm, habitat empathy really? or just nice drafters?
I can understand why Corb's there but not on my list, not before Scharoun, Loos, Utzon, Aalto, Mendelsohn, Albert Kahn, Nervi, Kenzo Tange, Eileen Gray, Hertzberger, Stam, Poelzig, Berlage, De Klerk, Revell, Perret and Asplund..anyway.
I had to view this twice to make sure that I didn't anything, and yet, something was missing ? Frank Gerhy ? I could not see how he could not be included in the top 20 ????????????????????????????
Charles Eames and Alvar Aalto would have been welcome additions, just because most modern green architecture looks like theirs. I'm not complaining that you left out Frank Gehry.

These pictures show better than words why modern architecture is bankrupt as a profession. Nevertheless, I will add a few words: cold, impersonal, unwelcoming, unimaginative, ungrounded, rectilinear, box-on-box pigeonholes, imperialist, corporatist, monuments to Darwinist bullies, devoid of artistic sensibilities, at odds with iconography, antagonistic to nature and all things natural, iconoclastic, simplistic, bleached white bread in a world starving for whole wheat. Calatrava is the notable exception among these 20.
For Colin Ball: Frank Lloyd Wright did not have damp proof membranes available at that time in history. He certainly was one of the top 10 best architects in history. The number one is Zaha Hadid today and in all history combined.
Like Robert Venturi and others Architecture is their life! ARCHITECTURE FIRST! For me: 1. Women 2 Cars 3 Golf 4. Architecture, a profession, not my life!
Aside from Mies, Corbu, Breuer, Kahn, Eero Saarinen and Craig Ellwood, you seem to have a real bias for "safe" and conservative architecture. I would have rated Zumthor, Nouvel, Maki and Koolhaas (really bright masters of the poetics of space) much, much higher than Pei, Meier or Paul Rudolph.
Nice video. Could have been shorter concentrating on the big three, Corbu, Mies, and FLW. The rest are good architects but nothing in comparison to the masters.
Heard Louis Kahn speak. When asked what made him a "great architect"? He said that he "outlived his cohorts". He was dead a few months later. He did know what a "brick" was. Campo is an excellent architect but where is the "break through"? Can't get too much whiter!
If bad construction is to be included as a measure then Frank Lloyd Wright would not be here ether, his masterpiece " Falling Water " has suffered structural problems from the day of completion , and its owner Edgar Kaufmann called it " a seven bucket building " due to it constant leaks ,and also called it " rising mildew " due to its constant damp problems. One would think that FLW would have put in damp proof membranes in a building that in Today's money would have cost $2.6 million .
Are we to understand this is your top 20 county down to number 1 and in your view I.M. Pei and Paul Rudolph are better, greater, more important architects than Frank Lloyd Wright and Gordon Bunshaft goes over Lou Kahn and Helmut Jahn is on the list but Alvar Aalto is not? Really? Opinions can differ on such things but sometimes someone's opinion is random nonsense. You have missed something somewhere.
Calatrava?? Really? Ok, his buildings are awesome but also bad constructed. He's sued right now for exceeding the budget and for constructions problems. To be a great architect is not just design beautiful buildings, it's also sticking to a budget and make the building efficient and a better place to stay. I disagree Calatrava is included in the list.
Bauhaus was the beginning of the ende - most modern architecture is cold, boring, far away from the people, colourless, nothing to feel at home, what a shame...
