I've had great fun on the onion creek trail and I appreciate you pointing out many more reasonable places for standard vehicles to explore. Moab is kind of magical because it's like being able to drive around in Grand canyon 😂ish... As far as safety, a little common sense can go a long way both on and off road. Thanks for the video

I did hells revenge, hells gate, hot tub, metal masher, in my wife’s daily driver, stock 05 Lexus lx 470. Totally against my wife’s wishes! We had an electric problem as soon as we started there and I lost “A Track”. First time, I did everything with open diffs with 9.5w 31.5 tires. Everyone was following filming expecting me to rip every panel off of the car. Kept telling me it’s going to permanently look different. Don’t do it! You can rent a rock buggy for $460.00 for 6 hours…. No risk no reward. I was determined to leave with a flawless car! took off the side steps to prevent damage. This was going to be EPIC! I couldn’t see a thing over the hood! I couldn’t see any tire placement that was absolutely the most terrifying thing I have done. Wife will go for the first time, and drive it on spring break. Same set up.

I stumbled across Onion Creek in Oct 2020 when I was in Moab just exploring around. I came down it from the top there after just following a road and ending up at the Bull Canyon Overlook, and just continuing on from there wherever my wandering took me. AMAZING! I did it in my 2010 V6 AWD RAV4 (stock except for Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires). Excellent all season tires to be sure, and surprisingly good in the dirt, but not "knobby" offroad tires like on my ZR2. There were a couple tricky spots coming down, one where I had to move a couple rocks I didn't think I'd clear (no skidplates on it), but other than just having to go slow, and carefully pick my lines, it was easily doable, with ounly one point that was a little difficult because of the slippery uphill (peagravel on hardpack). This weekend I'm bringing my new (100% stock/month old) 2024 Colorado ZR2 and except for it's much greater turning radius (still learning where the corners/wheels are) it should eat up everything the RAV had to go slow over. I think I'll do it up, and then back down for fun! I've been "softroading" the RAV since I bought it new in Dec '09, but this is the first truck I've had since I traded my Dakota Quad cab 4WD for the RAV, and even then I never did anything really challenging in it except once in the snow. So, being a noob, and going alone (as usual), I'm just going to do easy stuff and enjoy the scenery/ride, knowing that I have more than enough truck to get back safely.

Onion Creek is a super fun trail that's really great for anyone. Your ZR2 will have no issues with anything on this list. Honestly, it's smart to play it safe if you wheel by yourself. We wheel alone 99% of the time, but we've been wheeling for a long time and have certain things we do to stay safe. The good thing about most of the Moab trails is there are normally a lot of people one them so if you do have an issue there is help. Have fun!

@@legendarytrails It was amazing in the RAV, just challenging enough in it to give pause in several sections. This time at first I was worried about the switchbacks at the top in the ZR2 as I couldn't remember how tight they were, but in zooming in they should be easy. It's not like the super tight switchbacks of Black Bear (which I have only seen vids of). For me I wheel completely solo, nobody else is in the vehicle, so, as an extra precaution, I just bought a tow strap, soft shackles, a hitch ring, sturdy wheel chocks (in case I need to change a tire) and a good compressor. I didn't have time to get a box for the bed to carry all this so I haven't yet gotten a shovel, and some boards and the offroad jack from HF I want, but this will have to do for now. Thanks!

You should have a fun time on some of the beginner trails. Onion Creek is pretty great, and it will get you used to some narrower spots without too much danger. I think the biggest thing is to watch the weather and don't do anything in the rain.

Schafer trail is great in itself but if you continue on the road back to town there are several places where you are very close to the river. You pass by "Thelma and Louise Point", you pass by the Potash ponds, and you also pass by a good section of petroglyphs right along the river near where people climb the cliffs. You can also take a short hike to Corona arch. The east end of Gemini Bridges trail is fairly rough, if you don't want that then go out and back from the Island in the Sky road. Bull Canyon can be very rough and you definitely need high ground clearance for that one. Spring Canyon bottom- the road goes down Mineral Bottom switchbacks. These aren't difficult but are more extreme than Schafer trail. As you go along the river you might get into more sand and/or mud so beware. You left off Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners. These aren't any more difficult than some of the ones you mentioned and are very scenic. The road out to Kane Creek Canyon to get to Hurrah Pass is very scenic and has been improved greatly to the beginning of Hurrah Pass. For first-timers to Moab there are plenty of good sights to see from paved roads, plenty to keep you busy for a week anyway and you don't have to get off of pavement much.

I have a Z71 ext cab short bed w/ 32" tires all terrain tires (might be running MT's this spring), 4.10 gears, Eaton truetrac limited slip and it's leveled in the front, but I still worry about some of the approach and descent angles. I think I'll try some of these trails you mention. Hell's Revenge and Fins & Things looks like it may cause me to rub (might have to take off my front bumper to be safe?). I have a friend who wants to go and he has a lifted Ram 1500 on 37's but it's only 2wd so I think some of the steeper trails would be out of the question for him since he would just spin his rears and not be able to pull up even though he has tons of ground clearance. I think he could do some of the flatter trails and enjoy the views.
@legendarytrails
@legendarytrails 5 месяцев назад
2wd definitely limits the options, but he should be able to do onion creek, chicken corners, Gemini bridges, longs canyon bottom, and potash road. Really anything without major sand and steep rocky slopes. If he's adventurous, he might be able to do tusher tunnel if you do the trail early while there's moisture in the sand. For the Z71, the departure is mostly the problem. In the front, you can take all but one section in Fins south at an angle without issue. The step section is mostly sand and looks dramatic, but it doesn't cause damage. Hells revenge will definitely require angling most of the time, but our ZR2 did it fine, and the approach is only 31 degrees. If you want extra security, we run a hitch slider that protects our rear from damage. We have long videos of a lot of these trails on our channel if you'd like to see more of the trail. Our Ram 1500 had a 1.5" lift for fins, but it did just fine.

@@legendarytrails thank you very much for the info. We are planning to head out there in either July or August (hottest months unfortunately). I live in Utah about 3 hrs from Moab near SLC and will have my son visiting from Ohio and my best friend and his son are coming out from southern California. I will check out your videos. I have a class 4 frame mounted hitch on my truck and think the receiver would hit and slide before my bumper in most places.

I am planning a trip to Kanab (The Wave) in late April with my ‘23 TRD Pro Taco. Can you recommend some trails around that area? I was thinking about Sand Hallow or Zion. But I have zero knowledge about that area as I am from Texas! If you could please please please 🙏 send me some recommendations I would forever be in your debt! 😁. We love traveling down to the Kanab area. In fact we are also doing The Wave in April! Should be super fun! We have a few favorite trails that are great for stocks Tacomas. Near Kanab, we like Barracks trail. We took our stock 2021 TRD Off Road there and it was a fun trail here is the video link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HJ6KImkgLPM.html Also, the great chamber is super neat drive through the sand with a short hike to an epic sand chamber. There's a lot of fun trails around Hurricane and St. George it makes it hard to pick. I think we'd have to say our favorite for first timers in the area is Toquerville Falls - you can also connect this to the radio towers trail. We look a 2021 Chevy Trail Boss and it was pretty easy - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lMZ0XpBTvWA.html . Of Course, Sand Hollow - West Rim is a great trail - We recommend using West Rim Lite connection to get to the top (Avoid Razerbend). Here is a playlist of the other trails we've done in the area that might be helpful. It really depends on what you want to see and what you're interested in. ru-vid.com/group/PLbrq9tJJbNiMJf4dobJS2NE_XdMvNai1M Hopefully this helps!

We have a lifted 3" 4Runner, winch, locker etc. Should be able to do these trails...we have a Sol Horizon 19' trailer. It has 14" of ground clearance and is fairly off roady...are any of these trails trailer friendly? We are heading out there this summer 2024. Want to do some dispersed camping.
@legendarytrails
@legendarytrails 7 месяцев назад
For most of these trails, you should be fine (weather depending). The only ones that might be difficult with a trailer are tusher tunnel due to sand and dome plateau - might have issues with departure. For sure, you shouldn't take a trailer on fins n things. The departure angle with a trailer wouldn't work out. There is a parking lot you can leave it in while you run the trail and come back for it when you're done. White rim is the other trail where it could be done, but the park service doesn't allow them on the trail. We saw one on the trail, and it made passing extra difficult. Most of that trail is too narrow to make having a trailer safe. Hopefully, this helps!
@kurtburkhardt5862
@kurtburkhardt5862 7 месяцев назад
Thanks, I would never want to take a trailer on Fins N Things. Maybe a fairly flat easier trail...that is why we have the trailer so we can leave the heavy camping gear at the campsite when we try the harder trails. Thanks for the response!

Montra Colorado? What is it? (Rim Rocker). Be good if you had mentioned the miles and exact start point of each trail. Like Dome Plateau; where is it? Where does it start? How long is it? I'm sure I can find out, but it'd be nice if you'd mentioned it. Thanks.

The best resources for the start of each trail are our other videos. We feature them in more length and show the difficult sections. If you want a book to take with you with a lot of detail about the trails, we like the fun treks book. We would have put more detail in the video, but it would have made the video super long.

@legendarytrails

We like visiting in the fall before it snows (normally October) and also in the spring. Spring is harder to predict the weather, but if you time it right, it can be the perfect trip. Since we live close, we're able to watch the weather and head down when it looks like a nice day.
