im a relatively new subscriber and i deeply appreciate your organized, coherent and thoughtful reviews. im dipping my toe in more, lesser known literature because mainstream reads are simply what the masses follow. ive got a huge list now to work through, but im really excited to broaden my mind with these stories, especially the now critically acclaimed solenoid.

Thanks for the kind words! I find that it's nice to strike a fine balance between reading the popular "mainstream" books as well as the more obscure (often translated) ones. I'm happy to have helped put some books on your radar though -- Solenoid is absolutely worth your time!

Fabulous list, Sean! Keen to try pretty much every book on it! I own quite a few of them and I'm hoping to get to some of them this year - Septology, in particular. Very pleased to see you that enjoyed Anna Kavan's 'Ice', which is favourite of mine. Great to see 'Amydalatropolis' mentioned, too - a brilliant book that might need its own 'dishonourable mentions' category. ;)

Thanks, Sam! Ice is such a great little novel - I can see myself returning to it again and again. Amygdalatropolis definitely deserves its own "dishonorable" category and I might toss The Doloriad in there with it, haha.

Thanks, Lee! Solenoid is really wonderful. I'm hoping that you can get your hands on Warlock and Island of the Doomed soon. Excellent list and excellent video, Sean! This video was in my recommended and I ended up watching the whole thing start to finish. 😊 I'm also a big fan of long books. I really liked what you said about how the "faults in longer books are more permissable" because the good parts completely overshadow them. That's exactly it! A lot of the books you mentioned in this list are already on my to-read list (Warlock and Solenoid especially) but this list also gave me lots of new books to check out. My #1 book of 2022 was Underworld by Don DeLillo. Here's to a good year of reading! :^)

I'm eager to check out your video and hear your thoughts on it and other books. Cheers!

Thanks to your recommendations I also have "The Catholic School" in my best of 2022 along with "Book of Memories " by Peter Nadas but my favourite had to be "Europe Central" by William T Vollman. I have "Terra Nostra" and "Solenoid" on order right now so I am expecting a challenge in 2023 :-) Fosse is definitely on the list for 23 as well. All the best Ian

So happy Gormenghast and Tomb of Sand and Ferrante made the cut! Ohh Island of the Doomed sounds interesting. Unless it’s actually freaky I don’t like reading actually scary books, typically. I am about halfway through Septology and really enjoying it so far. I’m glad I waited for the bindup because it really does just pickup immediately after the first one.
@travelthroughstories
@travelthroughstories Год назад
All 3 are so good! I really want to read some of Ferrante's other novels this year. Island of the Doomed isn't necessarily scary, but it delves into that kind of existential, almost cosmic, horror. It's more dread and disquiet, I think. Think Lord of the Flies, but with less political allegory and more existential dread. I hope I can get that review out in the next week or two. Really glad you're reading Septology!! Completely agree that it's better to just treat it like a single long book. I'm really excited to hear your thoughts on it!

@travelthroughstories
@travelthroughstories Год назад
Thanks for the kind words, Charles! Wow, that's quite a lot of reading! Glad to know that Septology ranks quite highly with other readers as well. For Laxness, I think the best place to start is probably The Fish Can Sing (Brekkukotsannáll in Icelandic -- the English title is strange). It's short and a lot of fun. I also think that you could start with Salka Valka though, especially if you want to dig into one of his longer books. It's one of his earliest works, so it makes sense to start there as well.
@charlesring9579
@charlesring9579 Год назад
@@travelthroughstories I just ordered Salka Valka! Thank you for the answer! You are obviously interested in nordic literature, I'm curious if you have read Pär Lagerkvist and Harry Martinsson? Impressive that ur learning Norwegian, Knausgård and Fosse should be read in the original! When you are comfortable reading in Norwegian there is going to be no problem reading in Swedish as well! I have mainly focused on German philosophy and Russian and French literature the last ten years, but after reading The Morning Star and then the rest of Knausgårds work, and then finding ur channel, I've found a new path on my literary journey with nordic literature and its really exciting, I'm Swedish after all! I want to recommend a book by one of the most interesting contemporary swedish authors Marie Hermansson, unfortunately there is only on book translated to English, but its a good one: "The Devil's Sanctuary"! Have a good weekend!

I love the enthusiasm! Thank you for getting me into the world of Gormenghast. I've rarely had such a good time with prose, and I don't think I've read anything quite as amusing since Flann O'Brien. The Kindly Ones wasn't for me when I read it, and that's the only other book you mention that I've read. I didn't read a lot of books last years, but there were some definite highs. In particular, I enjoyed Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. It caught me off guard as I was just trying to find an easy listen (audio book), and it turned out to have such a simple beauty. I found it relatable, compassionate, and quite original. Other books I enjoyed in no particular order: Sara Stridsberg - Hunter i Huskvarna Michel Houellebecq - Anéantir Yuko Tsushima - Woman Running in the Mountains Mieko Kawakami - Breasts and Eggs Kazuo Ishiguro - Never Let Me Go, Klara and the Sun I also got a paperback copy of Diary of a Madman for my birthday. It's an auto-biography/memoir where the rapper Brad Jordan (Scarface) talks about his life and career to Benjamin Meadows-Ingram. For anyone remotely interested in rap music, it's warmly recommended.

I'm glad you really enjoyed Gormenghast! I read Flowers for Algernon in High School, but I should really return to it. I remember it being incredibly moving. I have a copy of Stridsberg's Drömfakulteten (in English though) and I've been meaning to get to it. She's a writer I've heard so many great things about. I've enjoyed some of what I've read of Houellebecq (and hated others), but I'll definitely pick up his latest once it's translated. Great list though -- thanks for sharing! I've heard good things about that Tsushima and I've been meaning to read Kawakami's other books since reading Heaven in 2021.

Such a interesting list Sean with so many huge books. I always seem to rate big books highly as I’m think if they aren’t worth the time I won’t continue with them. Tomb of Sand would be on my own list and possibly Septology as well although I found the last section lesser than the other two. A Suitable Boy was the biggest book I read last year and probably my favorite. Osebol is definitely one I’d like to get to and I plan on reading Die my Love with a friend in March. High endorsement for Salka Valka, I read my third Laxness, Iceland’s Bell last year and it wasn’t my favorite although I think it suffered for being stretched out over multiple months. I see crowdfunding has started on Unbound for Patrick McCabe’s new novel Goldengrove and I think I’ll take your advice and listen to Pogue Mahone.

@travelthroughstories Год назад
Thanks, Jo! I can definitely see why someone might not love Iceland's Bell -- I really enjoyed it, but I have a particular interest in Árni Magnússon. I think his other books like Salka Valka or The Fish Can Sing are better. Interesting about McCabe's new book! I'll have to look in that. I haven't read any of his more standard novels, so I'm interested in how his voice works in prose. Thanks for the head's up!

Hi, new subscriber here! Some of my fav reads of 2022 were, in no specific order (also the first year in forever where I've actually sat and read for fun outside of uni!): - A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. I now consider it my favorite book of all time; I have never been a very vocal reader, but this book had me audibly laughing on every single passage. - Concrete, by Thomas Berhard. Loved his style, loved the topics at hand, love the author's backstory. - Sent to the Silkworm House, by Gwen Hilton. Oh my God, she has a very refreshing and shocking voice! This is her debut novel, published by Expat Press, and I just really really really loved this incredibly funny and powerful autofiction book. A highly recommended read. - Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead, by Olga Tokarczuk. I just loved the translation (can't say the same for The Books of Jacob :c), it was a very fun read, and I felt very drawn to the location(s) depicted in the book. - Crucifeminació, by Manuel de Pedrolo. A very interesting and experimental book by one of the most important catalan writers of the last century, I doubt there will ever be a translation of it due to its format, but it was a very nice read about how things come to happen, myths, religion and all that. Also, I have always been an avid manga reader (the exception to what I said on the first line), but sadly no manga has enthralled me this year, but I will say that Taiyo Matsumoto's art in both Sunny and specially Takemitsu Zamurai are incredible.

Thanks for sharing your list! I've been meaning to read more Bernhard for years -- perhaps I'll try to find a used copy of Concrete. I haven't heard of Gwen Hilton, but I just read the description and it sounds wonderful! I read Drive Your Plow in 2021, I believe, and while I enjoyed parts of it, I really didn't love it. I also DNFed her The Books of Jacob earlier in 2022, unfortunately. I still want to give Flights a try though. I've only read a handful of manga, but it's a medium/genre that I'm eager to read more from. Thanks for all the recs!

Nice to see Die, my Love made it to the honorable mentions. This was your first encounter with Gormenghast? It’s a great sequence. It would have been great for Peale to be able to continue with Titus Awake. I wonder if the highly detailed realism in Italian fiction was influenced by the Italian neorealist film style in some way? The first book in Septology finally came through at our library, so I’m looking forward to that. Nearly finished with Solenoid. Hope you have another great year of reading, Sean! Cheers, Jack

And yes, I read Peake for the first time this year. Agreed that it's a shame that he never quite finished it, but the first two books especially are absolute gems. Interesting point about Italian neorealism... I have no idea as I'm really not too familiar with Italian lit other than the 3 big ones that I read this year (the two mentioned here and M: Son of the Century by Scurati).
