There are plenty of realistic contemporary painters who are both extraordinary artists and financially successful, but realism has not been at the epicenter of the art market for several decades. Styles, preferences and artistic mandates have always been dynamic. There's no disrespect for realism, rather a desire to search and create other tangents of visual art.
Few people who create what is considered art are able and skilled enough to draw and paint realistically anymore so it’s called “traditional “ and dismissed as passé, which is ridiculous
At this point, there’s only 2 groups of people in the entire universe: “Not-White,” and “Not Not-White.” Contrary to popular belief, for those in the “Not-White” category, their own identity is actually irrelevant. What *IS* of critical importance, however, is that you know they’re “Not-White.” As in _“I’m anything but White. Please God, please don’t make me be White…” (akin to Canadians defining themselves as “not American”). So there’s the “Not White” group, and everyone else. Forever condemned to live out the rest of their miserable, bigoted lives with all the other “Not Not-Whites.”
Hate it. Boring. Making people fool. They're destroyingthe the arts of the painting , but some people who destroyed the art of painting for making huge money promoting the terrible false values . Unfortunately they kept the market, and no one can turn back this tragic process. You can see how people ignore it because it I'd falce, and miserable. I know that I can't change it, but I say what is in my mind.
Excuse me, but Kazimir Malevich is not a russian artist, he was Ukrainian 6:28 He was born in Kyiv, wrote letters to his family in Ukrainian, and identified as Ukrainian. He was arrested and interrogated by the Russians, because of his ucranian motifs in artworks, then they forbade him from creating art. And yet, later, as he became well-known, they started calling him a “russian artist,” which is another example of russia stealing Ukrainian culture. I understand it’s easy to get mistaken when russia spreads so much misinformation, even editing Wikipedia. But I wanted to highlight this since it’s important to me as a Ukrainian artist. Thanks for understanding.
The region was an administrative-territorial unit of Russian Empire from 1796 to 1919 and then Soviet Socialist Republic. He also studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1903.
You forgot to mention how ucranian propaganda rewrote history after Revolution of 1917. Famine after civil war and collapsed bourgeoisie economy that were not only in Ucrain, but on russian territory as well you call Golodomor. What about this?
ONE WOMEN??? How about Kara Walker, Mikalene Thomas, Vija Celmins, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Sarah Sze, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, etc etc etc. There are numerous accomplished significant arts that happen to be female. Why are they ignored?
To me, this looks more like a list of the _worst,_ most overhyped artists in America. Scharf?! Condo?! Garbage. Wool?! Sub-garbage! Richard Prince? An absolute hack who never can/will move beyond his same tired old rephotos that he's been trotting out for 40 years already. Jasper Johns stopped painting years ago (he's what -- almost 100 now?!) A case can be made for Ed Ruscha being on a list of the "top American painters"; I'll give you that. Katz's work is shallow, but at least visually appealing and distinctive. Scully might make the cut, although his output is mind-numbingly repetitious.
Art is subjective and one can like or dislike. My take on these famous artists is that none of their artwork - at least the ones shown in this video - convey an emotion or beauty. It's all about repetition of a message or of the same patterns. No emotions, nada, flat. However, if' you've been friend with Basquiat, you score many points!
Where’s all of the current rock-star female artists?!? Where’s Cecily Brown? Christine Ay Tjoe? Flora Yukhnovich? Catherine Goodman? Christina Quarles? Rita Ackermann? Francesca Mollett? Jenny Saville? Jadé Fadojutimi? France-Lise McGurn? Lucy Bull? I REALLY think you need to reassess this very suspect list, Artpatico!!! 🤔
There are some decent inclusions here… but some real head-scratchers as well… seems like maybe this is just AI generated content? Can’t imagine someone actively curating this list and thinking they nailed it (only 1 woman; Schnabel and Scharf as top painters?) Good surface information on a handful of artists; but seriously lacking any reasoning to back up many of these people as being ‘top’ painters.
There are so many artist in American that have order of magnitude more talent and skills then the 15 listed here. Wiley may deserve to be on the list. Glancing over the video and seeing the art work I have zero interest in learning more about any of theses artist. Boring, woke, Pc, soulless, appeal to the lowest common denominator. At best this is ok corporate art, AT BEST!
Once the art industry concentrates on the work and not the color of the artist, it would be appreciated more. Your title is American Painters! Yet you say African American for black artist and American for white artist. They all are American artist, we can see what color they are. I know it maybe a small issue, but its also a large issue within the big picture. The gate keepers already control whom they want to elevate such as Kehinde. A small crack can bring down a whole wall!
Kinda very predicatable list, very androcentric. Where's Dana Schutz? A much better painter than most of these, though KJM is one of the best, and SS is probably the best colourist here. A few are laughably inadequte.
Maybe call the vid "My favourite contemporary American painters", it would be less contentious. But then I guess online etiquette is always about getting a reaction. My video is in another, parallel universe, where capitalism never happened.
The Alex Katz portrait of a lady in the rain with an umbrella shown briefly at the 17:13 mark was displayed in a hallway by the former Margaret Lipworth Gallery in Gallery Center of Boca Raton back in the 90s for a few years. I worked in another contemporary gallery in the same center and passed this large work at least 50 times a day, to the point where It would frequently appear in my dreams. For a while, we had designated wall space directly beside the work. This presented a challenge since the Katz work was massive, easily dwarfing even paintings over 12 feet long.
Just Julie Mehretu in this sampling. It seems the art world can't handle race and gender inequalities at the same time. That said, women artists have been gaining far more attention in the contemporary art world over the past 20 to 30 years than they have in any other period. Small steps.
So far they have been abstract rubbish. Art should be things of beauty and these are not atall, they are like wallpaper or interior design, they have lost the plot, these painting or more than funishings
Honestly, in 2024 there's really no reason to create a video like this and not include more diversity. These artists lists always go the same way (celebrating the same roster of famous artists). It's time other people (women, POC) got more attention.
All of these “best of” lists are amusing. This one is particularly horrifying. They’re all subjective, but there are criteria that should be applied when considering great art. This guy settled a one-sided affirmative action approach. Go big or go home, bro. You omitted women-women of color, specifically. No trans artists? Shame on you. 😂
First, perhaps you're not a native English speaker or just uneducated; "There is no woman in list" is a Horrible (attempt at a) sentence. "There are no women on the list" is what you want to say/write. Secondly, the second artist featured is a Woman.
