Slap bass... we ALL love it, right?
If you're aiming at being a pro bass player, being able to play a great slap bass line is essential and something that you'll be expected to do for certain songs and styles.
With that in mind, I thought I'd share what I believe to be the 2 BIG slap bass mistakes I see countless bass players making.
As always, I want hear back from you guys... make sure you let me know whether you've either made or are currently making these mistakes in the comments under the video.
Ooo... and I also announce the winner of the Darkglass Alpha Omega pedal compeition too...
See you in the shed,
Scott :)

As a bass player for the last 20 years, primarily in the US, now live in the UK, this guy is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT correct in SO SO SO many of his comments. Its actually HARDER to play SLOW with feel than fast. I stumbled onto this video inadvertently but Scott, you are absolutely correct. Watch this cat, he GETS it! I am also someone who used to only slap in E (actually its usually harmonic Em, but I am nitpicking :). Slow and steady win the groove! WELL DONE Scott, whoever the hell you are. But you UNDERSTAND the fundamentals of good percussive bass! Bravo!

also, I think most people who slap just think that the root-octave are the only slap notes available.

@jay8819
@jay8819 7 лет назад
michael tomazou its more about what you don't play, the muting, and space between notes. anyone can onslaught a load of notes. phrasing fewer notes well is harder but far more interesting.

Those machine gun slapping sounds cool and all but its pretty hard to digest. Its those slow funky grooves are where its at!
@R0b1zzle137
@R0b1zzle137 7 лет назад
agreed. its incredible how tasteful minimal slapping and popping can be, and there are so few instances in which one needs to go "Victor Wooten mode". Kind of like guitar players who only know how to shred but cant play rhythm, but I digress

Hitting too hard is one of my pet peeves. I can't have an amp in my flat so I used to practice unplugged. And in order to hear myself I really hit the bass hard. That's something I really need to work on...

Tuna Tourette same. I lived somewhere I couldn't own an amp, I played unamplified for at least over a year. next time I plugged in I realised how damned hard I picked

There are wireless amp pugins that you can listen to through headphones for about 40 bucks. I've also thought about how I'd adjust to apartment life as a guitar player and this is something I'd really reccomend.

Good points. Getting out of the key of E, and control challenge of slowing down. Another slap challenge is not playing in 4/4 all of the time, like 6/8 for example.

It took me more then a half year to see some improvement on my slap bass. First thing I tried to learn was rhcp's get up and jump. goddamn it was too hard. Then I changed my hand position, realised that flea has a very different style and there are plenty of better players :D and after 1 year I learned marcus miller's power :D So, don't give up man, keep practicing at least 30 min p/day and the day will come :3

Seen თეზი The teacher I had as a teen was very good and he helped me a lot with technique, but I wasn't feeling it. I stopped playing altogether for a long time (I'm 32 now) because I was frustrated with myself, and took it back up like a year ago. I don't get frustrated anymore except when I play slap. Maybe I'll try again sometime, but right now everything it does is making me want to toss the bloody bass away and I don't have a lot of time to practise, so I'm focusing on other things. Thanks for the advice though! :)

The thoughts of this clip are noted but the real (hidden) value of this clip is the sample you used Scott. The artist Ndegeocello has a number of very fine songs out there (and she is the bass player as well as lead vocal). The more I sample her music, the richer it becomes. Try her song called 'Make Me Wanna Holler', written for her, by Marvin Gaye. He performed a song by the same sub-name years ago - 'Inner City Blues'. The lyrics he wrote first time portray the same struggle as her version but with very different situation the 2nd time. -- as always, enjoying your way of explaining da bass.

Yep, never gave it too much thought, but whenever I slap, I usually hover around or just stay in E to use that low string as a crutch when I run out of ideas of where to go and need to reset my left hand. Good to know.

Nice groove, and a great help to learn how to slap, I noticed that in this video Scott talks about the consistent slap motion in the right hand but in other videos he talks about doing a thumb-slap-thumb pluck, which isn't consistent with that, I can feel that I'm missing something in there but I can't tell what. Also, I come from a relatively advanced theory background, and it sounds to me like the Db minor pentatonic fits really well in this key without any void notes. With that in mind, the Db minor pentatonic is actually the exact same thing as the E major pentatonic it just starts on the sixth Db-minor pent Db-Fb-Gb-Ab-Cb-Db E-maj pent E-F#-G#-B-C#-E (Due to enharmonics, Db=C# just as Ab=G# so the notes are all the same) So this song actually is (well, sort of) in the key of E. Though there are complications if using the actual ionian mode in E (the traditional major scale)
@samatza
@samatza 7 лет назад
Very valid points Scott. I remember reading in an interview, it may have been Stanley Clarke that said it had to move away from E. I really liked John patitucci's tune Growing which was in C# and I worked on that. Being left handed and playing right handed I don't have a lot of speed so I can't play Lessons in Love as fast as Mark King but it's fun to try. In the slow tempo department I think Marcus Miller does it great and he uses popping sparingly just before the down beat. It's cool to try and emulate different players styles and make it part of your repertoire and today we have so much easy access to audio and video that makes it easier to learn than when I started around the Jurassic period.BTW, I do like fish and chips.

1. Many of the classic funk joints, particularly those from the 70s, are in E. (due to the fact that most bassists were 4-stringers, back then!). That may be the reasons why a lot of folk subsequently slapped in that key! Now, a good practice that goes off of that "E groove" would be two Louis Johnson joints in G minor: "Stomp" and "Get On The Floor!" 2. "Machine Gun slapping," IMO, came from the Victor Wooten/Bill Dickens/Jaco-speed generation! (Jaco didn't slap, but bassists did adopt his 'speed'!). Everyone wanted to be those cats mentioned....! Some nice "slow slap" tunes would be Sly's "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa", Parliament's "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and Maxwell's "Somethin' Somethin'"....!

Simpson Coc use your left hand to mute the other strings
@vincentkoster6291
@vincentkoster6291 7 лет назад
Simpson Coc keep practicing and don't give up! also to keep your thumb parallel to the strings, keep in mind that your lower arm has to 'almost' touche the bridge. that way it's easier to slap with a parallel thumb instead of slapping pointing down (like flea). it takes some getting used to but don't give up practicing!
@chains7844
@chains7844 7 лет назад
i have the exact same problem but its now under control (just a little bit) just keep on practicing :)
@MidlifeRenaissanceMan
@MidlifeRenaissanceMan 7 лет назад
Mostly left hand muting, but I also use my right hand to mute the E string when I'm slapping the A string. I've been playing for so long, I had to stop and think about it. Just keep practicing clean and build up your speed that way. You can also go fast and messy, then bring the tempo down to find where you clean up your playing. I'm doing that to get my dexterity up in a guitar at the moment. I'm much more coordinated playing fast runs on a bass than on a guitar. Bring the speed up until you fall apart, then start where you can't play clean and slow the pace down. Minimum 10 minutes twice a day
@tomschang2225
@tomschang2225 7 лет назад
Simpson Coc My ways of minimizing hitting those other strings is to: a) slap on the neck (literally my thumb hits the string above the edge of the neck of the guitar) b) rest stroke as much as you can. This means slapping through the string you intend to hit and resting your thumb on the next string down If you do that right you should rarely get any other strings resonating than the one you want. That odd time out you can fret hand mute to deal with it.
