I have to disagree on The Thing the 50s version is one of my all time favorite horror/sci fi movies. The banter between the characters,the misguided scientist,the comic relief newspaper reporter and the use of the Geiger counter as a warning device just puts the movie over the top for me. I've seen the remake I like it but blood ans gore do not a classic make.

The characters are a huge reason why the original Thing is superior. Very likeable and well written dialogue. Even the romance is well done and you like them as a couple
@MosesWine
@MosesWine 2 месяца назад
The characters in the original are likeable, but the characters in Carpenter's feel like real people. Couple that with superior suspense, stellar cinematography by Dean Cundey, one of the most well known scores in cinema history by Ennio Morricone, and quite possibly the pinnacle of practical effects by Rob Bottin, it's undeniable that the remake IS a classic. The "blood and guts" argument is ridiculous. It's quite tame for one thing, and again, it pushed the bar for effects to new heights. The original monster is essentially a rehash of Frankenstein from 20 years earlier and I don't think the makeup is even as good. Less than inspired. I love the original too, but saying it's superior is viewing it through nostalgia glasses and not recognizing its flaws while also not recognizing the strengths of the remake.

I absolutely love both, but with 3 decades between them, I don't really feel that they can be compared. It's apples and oranges as to what you would reasonably expect to see from their perspective time periods, and yet I don't think anyone expected to see JCs masterful visage!

Alred Hitchcock said it best. "It's not what you see that scares you, it's what you don't see". "Alien" was a perfect example of this. I like the old black and white films. I remember as a kid growing up in Kentucky we had 2 channels that showed horror movies on Saturday night around 11:30 pm and they were Thriller 18 and Terror in the Night. Thriller18 was called that because it was shown on channel 18. If I didn't like one of the movies on one channel, or had already seen it and wanted something different, I would watch the other channel. This was in the late 60s / early to mid 70s. I got to watch a lot of these movies you have on your list from the 50s, but also movies from the 40s and 60s. I'm a big fan of classic B films, not only from the horror genre, but also sci-fi. I loved House on Haunted Hill but have always been surprised they used the house they did. It’s certainly not a typical haunted house. Not that it really matters. I think they are going to remake Night of the Hunter. Such a good movie. The original Invasion still gives me the creeps, well and the remake with Nicole Kidman. Great list!

I saw House on Haunted Hill for the first time during the pandemic (I’m a senior so I don’t know how I missed it growing up). I agree about the exterior of the house being atypical, but the interior definitely had some classic horror sets. Cheers. 👍👍👍

Excellent choices from top to bottom. I love seeing so many of these classics getting some love, especially 'Night of the Hunter' & 'The Fly.' 👍👍👍

The first twenty minutes of "Them," before you actually see the giant ants, is some pretty scary filmmaking. Once the ants are shown... Not so much.

Tremendous list! Night of the Hunter is one of my all time favorites. I don't know how old I was when I saw it for the first time but I was young enough that I wanted to watch it because my name is in the title. I watched it with my grandparents and we had to watch The Dick Van Dyke show afterwards to erase the fear from my mind. One 50s horror movie I would highly recommend is The Ghost of Yotsuya. It's a Japanese movie and I think you would enjoy it. It's only 76 minutes long and it's streaming on the criterion channel.

A lot of these were also terrific to see at the Drive In back then. Especially double features. You were scared but your date was even more terrified. So you had to come to her rescue😊

I prefer the earlier versions for Dracula, Frankenstein & The Mummy. So my 5 favorites from your list would be , House on Haunted Hill The Creature from the Black Lagoon Them The Crawling Eye ( a very underrated movie ) The Fly The thing I loved most about 50’s horror films was the campy sci fi movies. One of my very favorites of all horror films didn’t make your list & I am very surprised it’s not there as it was later remade, it’s Invaders From Mars !

Some excellent picks on this list. I'd also recommend HORROR IN THE BLACK MUSEUM,THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE, DEMENTIA 13, THE BLACK SLEEP, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, and PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE.

Great list of 50s classics. Mostly predictable but good to see I bury the living, the Tingler, and the Crawling Eye make the list. Could have easily chosen the War of the Worlds, the Incredible Shrinking Man, or IT Came from Outer Space. My list would be longer and would probably include Fiend Without a Face, Corridors of Blood, Angry Red Planet, Frankenstein's Daughter, the She Creature, Alligator People, and the Haunted Strangler. I mean, what's a pizza without Cheese!!! 😂

It's a solid film, but he already had a crowd of Hammer movies at the top. He probably had to break it up for the sake of presentation if nothing else. I'm wondering where CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF will fall when he does the 1960s. That's an underrated picture - a contender for my favorite Hammer.

I have to disagree with you on Curse of the Demon. I think it would have been such a more powerful film if they had kept the ambiguity about whether it was really magic or just self-fulfilling prophecy, and omitted the goofy demon prop.

This decade list is similar to the Amicus anthology rankings. Such a great period that so many will disagree on anyone's personal favorite. To many great films that came from the 50s to rank . Even your #19 of the Mummy I would have so much higher. Easily in my top 5 even over Curse of Frankenstein. Lee puts in an incredible performance under bandage acting mostly with eyes. The definitive Mummy film and one of Hammers best IMO. I would put Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Thing, Dracula and either Them, Frankenstein or Godzilla to round it out. Impossible to even think of my top 5. Great video and great list. An amazing era for Horror films. I can't agree more on the Creature design. Hollywood has yet to top it imo
