The theory of them actually being dead and in purgatory, not on Earth but also not in Hell, and Courage was Muriel's dog in life and now all these monsters come around from Earth, that are actual people, and he protects Muriel and Eustice from them.

Sounds almost reasonable if it wasn't that Finn ages in real time and the "fantasy" land has a post apocalyptic backstory. Add to it that Finn's human family was revealed to be somewhat (originally) normal on a secluded island chain near it's final season.
