For me - and we must remember that everything is subjective on here - those horses with an electrifying burst of finishing speed are the not only the most exciting and the most satisfying , but also the best. My favourite horse is Sir Ivor. I remember being in a state of bemusement whenever he was beaten. Lamtarra was sensational, but the greatest, of course, was the incomparable Sea Bird.

Lammtarra, possibly the most stunning 'wet sail' finish ever seen at this level.

Look how quickly Sea Bird passes the leaders, who are all under a full head of steam, at 8:14. He does it so easily it doesn’t seem real.

Sea Bird was the only horse to win the Derby on the bridle, a feat he repeated in the Arc. He was definitely the greatest racehorse I have ever seen.

I was a kid, just heard about Lester and started watching horse racing. I remember watching The Minstrel versus Hot Grove, and Lester's "triple whip" action during the final furlong: it still gives me goosebumps!

The next time ITV screens the Derby I hope they will find an introduction to replace "Frankel's done it, the horse of a lifetime!" Had he won the Derby & Arc, that statement would have something to support it.

Most of these are before my time (86 was the first I remember - & what an introduction with Dancing Brave flying from miles back, just failing to catch Sharastani!). Loved Lammtarra - so underrated...But my dear departed dad reckoned nothing would have beaten Sea Bird in '65. But all...ALL Derby winners deserve it on the day. Can only hope 2020 can be salvaged...

Thanks for this compilation. Brought back many memories especially of 1987 when I bet the last £50 of my student grant on Most Welcome and stood up in the Liverpool University students' bar yelling "go on my son, get him son, get him, get him" which was a bit perplexing for my comrades. Fortunately the bet was £25 each way so I was able to pay the rent.

This is a very fair representation, and I keep changing my mind as to which is best. It used to be Nijinsky, but after seeing Sea Bird II again I think it's maybe him. Mill Reef was a better horse than in the 2000 Guineas and his 6 length victories in the KIng George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and 6 length win in the Arc make him a contender. I'm sure of one thing, if all the Derby winners ran in one big race there'd be a turn up, and if they ran again after they were refreshed there'd be a different result. Without the American ringworm which severely weakened him, Nijinsky would have won the Arc and then retired unbeaten. He's the first triple crown winner since Bahram in 1935 and nobody can take that away from him. He also sired 3 Derby winners 1 more than Mill Reef.

Bit surprised Crepello (1957) not included, remember the runner up to Crepello was Ballymoss who went on to win the St Leger and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Unfortunately Crepello broke down and wasn’t able to run again.

Troy was phenomenal on the day.

Golden Horn was a fantastic racehorse as was Sea The Stars.Galileo was an impressive winner and has had a magnificent influence as a stallion

Without doubt one of the greatest jockeys to have ever graced a racecourse, R.I.P The Long Fellow.

Aside from the Greatest (Seabird), I'd put Lammtarra up against ANY derby or Arc winner. .

another great upload from the past... some very interesting races.. can remember from grundy..just cant beat the master piggot and his style of riding huh .. steve cauthen was another interesting import.. winning races by some lengths and triple crowns both sides of the atlantic

You always something new when watching these old races. How the heck was the sprinter Ajdal still in contention 2 furlongs out in 1987. He must have been running on fumes for the last half mile: a very brave effort.

can't see past Sea the stars as he won everything there was to win at the classic distance, but we will never know how great Shergar would have become, as he destroyed the field similar to the way Frankel did to all the great milers.

Shergar's winning time on what appears to be good to firm ground was 2.44.2, one of the slowest ever. Could it be that he was simply the best of a poor crop?

Golden Fleece would have carried a good few of these home, esp Reference Point!!

Prix l'Arc winner Urban Sea, is one of only two mares to bred two Epsom Derby winners: Galileo and Sea The Stars are sons of Urban Sea, the real blue hen.

Mill Reef is my favourite I was there when he won and had a nice bet on him.Nijinsky was as good.My Dad always said Seabird was the best winner he ever saw and he went back to Tulyar etc.Sea Bird beat a class field.Shergar was impressive but I don't think the field was that great.The best horse never to win it would be Dancing Brave imo.

Shergar could have been anything - abs tragedy what happened to him! Sinndar under-rated and he did beat the brilliant Sakhee - two arc winners , back to back.. Nijinksy might be the best horse ever tho ..in UK (Secretariat in the US)

Sea The Stars' nephew in human terms, Frankel (sire: Galileo). Carries very good bloodlines but Frankel ((Galileo (Sadlers Wells-Urban Sea). Dam: Kind sired by: Danehill). Frankel carries better bloodlines.

Who would back against frankel against any of these it's a pity he never ran in the derby but he's certainly a breeding success

Well the best Derby winner was Sea Bird. After that its becomes tricky. My second would be Mill Reef, with Shergar, and Sea The Stars maybe just ahead of Generous. After that I put Nijinsky in 6th with Reference Point ahead of Galileo. Only 9th would be Golden Fleece with Authorised maybe 10th.

Reference Point ? He was not even considered to be a great Derby Winner in 1987. What about Tulyar, Royal Palace, The Minstrel, GoldenFleece,... etc.

I disagree with your choices. How you can possibly put sindar ahead of Sea Bird, Nijinsky and Mill Reef is beyond comprehension to me. I would even put Lammtarra up there with the 3 I have mentioned. What do you base your criteria on?

The High Chaperal Derby was shocking, 4 horses were injured with two being put down, Coshockton collapsing and dying near the winning post. Moon Ballad was used as a Godolphin pacemaker, but went on to break the course record at Goodwood subsequently. Even in National Hunt racing, it is unusual to have such injuries in the final furlong.
