@@jasminejohnston6393 I wouldn't call it a "bad" subject. Dark yes, but its normal for people to contemplate growing old and passing away even at a young age. I think their grandmother passed away around the same time they wrote this song so that might be what inspired them to think about their own mortality. Also, they were definitely mature for their age. Their first three albums have a lot of deep songs on them that sound really pop and happy but are about deep subject matter, all songs they wrote when they were still minors.

Only years later, when I was about 20, did I learn that there were actual lyrics to the song that were not very pleasant and the song’s title is actually called Suicide is Painless. Crazy to think that a lot of these are songs I listen to while depressed but never really knew why they spoke to my depression. People always say listen to happy songs but happy songs make you feel alone where as depressed ones always made me feel understood as an outcast

You forgot " In Too Deep" by Sum 41. It's literally one of the catchiest and happiest sounding songs of all time, with a feel- good music video to boot. But the lyrics are about a failing relationship.

If I’m gonna be honest, I wasn’t surprised by any of these. I am one of those people who actively tries to hear the lyrics in every song I listen to. Hay-ya and Mr. Brightside are two major examples where I hear the song and see everyone all happily dancing to and I just sit there and like “ya, y’all enjoy dancing to the really depressing song, I won’t ruin it for you”
@yomama12546

Not “hay-ya”. 💀 true tho, I can’t believe people be dancing to Mr. Brightside, it’s like one of the most depressing songs ever

@@yomama12546 right, the first time I heard that song I was like “this is so freaking sad!” And then I heard it at a dance of some kind and was shocked at the amount of people just dancing and laughing!

Andre even says “Y’all don’t wanna hear me, you just wanna dance” at the start of the second chorus. EDIT: Didn’t know that was pointed out by the video when I initially sent that comment.

Number 0: Teenage Dirt-Bag - Wheatus (2000) Lyrics meaning/inspiration: feeling like a useless outcast in a high school who struggles to fit in for he is different. But despite his criticism and hatred still gets his girl.

She nailed it during 'Bad Moon Rising': "catchy vocals." Sometimes I think it's more about the musicality of the lyrics and not the lyrics themselves/their meaning. You enjoy singing along with the melody and either don't actually pay attention to the content of what you're singing or simply set it aside.

Years back I think there was an old video of the band just hanging out recording themselves, talking about the song and I swear they said the meaning of the lyrics "could be" either one. It's a thought provoking song. It was long ago, but most great artists allow the fans to tell them how we interpret their music anyhow.

The song "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers has to be one of the saddest songs with a happy beat. He is literally singing about being in a car wreck with his girlfriend and kissing her one last time before she dies. Pearl Jam redid it and made it a much more morose song.
