Thanks to everyone who pointed out that we used a flawed example in the criteria when citing the Puffer Fish, as it is not only deadly when eaten. Fun fact: The killer whale is actually a part of the dolphin family, not the whale family. Ancient sailors named the orca “asesina ballenas” which actually means “whale killer”, however it is now referred to as the killer whale. There’s no definite reason for this but some people say it was mistranslated and others say it was because it’s easier to say. They got their name from their tendency to hunt whales as prey and the threat they pose to whales. Hope this interests some of you 😊

Dolphins are whales, so it doesn't matter much. All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins. Orcas are dolphins, therefore they are whales.

I worked on islands in the Great Barrier Reef for about six years. When we went out diving, the instructors off Herron Island took me to visit a giant Moray Eel off the coral quay, that they called Olive. She had a head the size of a shoe box, and was so friendly to dive instructors that she knew well. They could come up to her and massage her under her neck. She was magnificent to watch. I only saw her once. An experience i will remember forever. It all went bad when a guest, an american diver, got too close and bumped her on the head with his camera. She took a big chunk out of his right hand in retaliation and he had to be medivaced of the island in a helicopter. She was never see again. Very sad for us on the island as everyone who dived (most of the staff) loved her dearly.

Not an American thing, an inexperienced diver thing! I can't tell you the number of times I've had to deal with inexperienced divers from all over the world doing similar things and ruining the incredible experiences for everyone else.

But diving seems like the kind of thing that attracts people that think "wAnNa KnoW wHaT WoUlD Be CoOL"" without giving it a second thought, and proceed to do that action with a simpleton mindset. okay, i never knew the flower urchin could be really dangerous. i sometimes find them and grab them like it's nothing to throw them into deeper waters. maybe it's because the ones i find were too young to hurt me also, from where I live, we have sea snakes hiding in the crevasses of our seawalls from time to time and they sometimes *actually try to swim to you* once they're out and about

Deep Blue is believed to be the biggest Great White Shark on the planet - she's at least twenty feet long and weighs at least two and a half tons. Another large Great White is Nukumi who is a few feet shorter than Deep Blue at 17 feet 2 inches but she weighs almost 3,500 pounds! I love Great White Sharks - I think they're lovely and maybe one day I will get to see one in the wild.

Right you are. Another fun fact: in Australia, Portuguese man-o'-wars are referred to as bluebottle jellyfish and great white sharks are referred to as white pointer sharks. An honourable mention is the irukandji jellyfish.

Blue ring octopus is definitely top 3. If being stung, no one will be able to save you except for god. All it takes to ruin a fun dive is the discovery of blue ring octopus. The deadliest stuff in ocean is always the small things.

I do believe that Orcas AND sea lions are dangerous creatures, but they are adorable and beautiful creatures. Sharks are amazing fish, they can smell blood from miles away. Electric eels has more volts than a tasers; 500 volts can kill a human?! Wow 😯

Voltage is not the factor when it comes to the lethality of electricity, it's actually the current and the threshold is 6 milliamps.

Hang on, I know we are on about Orcas in captivity most likely, but there has been a human fatality from Orcas, at Seaworld, one of the workers was dragged underwater and drowned by the Orca she looked after.

I mean, they are extremely intelligent animals and placing them in such a small depressing pool is no way for them to live. They get stripped from their families and can never leave their environment. I'd be pretty mad after years too. But you know, we humans think we can control everything.

You forgot the most terrifying of the moray eel's traits. It has actual Xenomorph jaws. They use their outer jaws to grab their prey and their inner jaws to bite chunks of it off.

I’m not surprised the stonefish made the list. They’re the most venomous fish on the planet, and stepping on one is supposedly the worst pain you can ever feel.
