I only liked about 4 of these. But then again I am an older person. The songs just weren't my style. I prefer that one song by Dolly..I understand she wrote it for Porter. He gave her her start. She received an opportunity but didn't want to take it. Porter told her to go ahead. I guess he knew you take the opportunity when it comes your way
she said herself that her least favourite song to sing live is Hurt, purely cuz how difficult it is to perform. She said the sudden shifts from the louder belts to the softer falsetto is not easy to get right all the time. Other than that she said it's a vocally demanding song and the emotional lyrics require a powerful set of pipes to properly convey the emotions.
Mariah Carey's songs are all tough to sing. She employs all registers, from low to high, as well as various riffs and runs, whispers, and falsettos. Queen thingz. FACTS! 👑
Who is Mariah??? I Don't know Her... I really haven’t paid attention to Mariah. since I was in like seventh or eighth grade when she used to be popular, so I didn’t…” know about Her.. Who is she .. ? indeed what She did ?
Getting older. Mariah lost her good voice at a 1990s performance. Now She can't hit the high notes anymore. it's not interesting to me anymore now I'm starting to forget about it. and left her songs and music forever
@@objectiveperson2372. We're talking about her challenging songs, which a normal human being like you can't even sing, so shut up if you don't understand.
@@NickCC23 First, we’re talk about artists here, not about glorified dancers. Brittany’s music is for teenagers, no guiltily whatsoever. She’s a selling product of a record label, Christina is a singer, artist, performer, writer - full package. You can not even compare them. Second, next time you wanna comment and make a fool of yourself like you just did, think twice. Third, grow tf up.
@@PayneMaxx first off, it's Britney, not Brittany. She's also an artist, a different one at that. I prefer Christina, but would never ever disrespect Britney, like what you're doing.

maybe Mariah used to sing songs that were difficult, when she was young,,, now she is entering old age, she is old both physically and voice, her vocal abilities have decreased drastically, and she cannot maintain her vocal quality, like other divas who have old,, or a diva who is one age with him.....
@@The_Colorado everybody’s voice changes it is just a fact of life no matter how well you take care of yourself! Mariah still has a great voice is it like the 90s absolutely NOT! You can hear how she rearranges her songs to sing them now! Her voice has really changed since 2010, she needs more vocal rest for sure to sound great
don't talk about Mariah, her voice has changed. Old age factor, and now her voice doesn't sound good anymore. I think Beyonce, mastered almost 2 decades to perfection. the songs are better and more in demand
I think Christina Aguilera should have received more recognition. Her "Bound To You" was awesome, as well as many of her other songs. Her voice is beautiful.
Toni Braxton took the cake cause everyone can go up but to go down deep and sound like that - her sound is still the most deepest and lowest yet passionate sensual and given ❤
I have to say Ann Wilson from Heart. Her rendition of Stairway to Heaven during the Kennedy Center Honors was magnificent. Robert Plant himself even praised her saying he was "overwhelmed."
I agree that Ann Wilson is the queen of music, especially in her early years, the first four albums of Heart are masterpieces. Her voice is the best for me - still!
@@Tcentenom yes. That's why Toni Braxton is a powerful singer because she can make her songs hard to sing even she can't whistle. Almost all of her songs are hard to sing like "Another Sad Love Song". Whistling voice is too overrated for me.
Toni Braxton has an amazing and beautiful voice. I fully agree, glad it's on the list here too. "Unbreak My Heart" is a gorgeous, haunting song, and is highly underrated in my opinion.
@@VJAllison1974 haunting is an understatement. This was the last song I was listening to hours before my fave singer and friend died. Actually this song was covered by him in the group he was in. He sang all the low parts . It's so hard and we all miss him.
20. Mariah Carey - My All 19. Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On 18. Lisa Fischer - How Can I Ease The Pain 17. Toni Braxton - Un-break My Heart 16. Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart 15. Ariana Grande - Imagine 14. Adele - Rolling In The Deep 13. Jennifer Holliday - And I Am Telling You 12. Minnie Riperton - Lovin’ You 11. Barbra Streisand - Don’t Rain On My Parade 10. Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights 9. Whitney Houston - I Have Nothing 8. Mariah Carey - Vision Of Love 7. Beyonce - Listen 6. Sia - Chandelier 5. Christina Aguilera - Hurt 4. Celine Dion - All By Myself 3. Beyonce - Love On Top 2. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You 1. Mariah Carey - Emotions I would like to add one of Mariah's hardest song "Lead The Way" That song is really hard to sing, like damn!!
I hope that the songs are not vocal suicide. That are great Songs. All Stars are the reasons, why the music industrie still lives by singing Originals and Cover-Versions. In German we call that:" Erlaubt ist, was gefällt." (If you love it, it's allowed)
@@janpcsMariah can’t sing her songs live. They do tricks in the studio. Whitney often outdid her studio songs live. Beyonce had no business on there. Adele either.
Olivia Newton-John "Hopelessly Devoted to You" Huge range from a non-belter, and considered one of the hardest songs to cover, and she nailed it live into her 60s
Ahhh, Livvy had a very ordinary voice, limited range and quite weak. Sorry sport, I watched her from the earliest days of the Go show, saw her live with her bestie pat Caroll, (supporting The Strangers), before she left for England. Very average.
What amazing female vocalists we've been blessed with. "Vision of Love" made me jump in my seat when Mariah hit the high notes. Jennifer Holliday and Xtina made me cry. Whitney's voice was otherworldly. Every one of these performances is extraordinary.
I am glad you included Minnie, as I started listening to the picks, I got to think of her and "Loving you", waiting to see if she will be mentioned. When I heard Arianas bird-like tones, it also reminded me of Minnie.
I also love Bound to You by Christina from the Burlesque soundtrack. The vocals are amazing. Ariana's whistle notes on My Hair are also amazing and so unexpected. Literally whistling her chorus and it's insane.
I will always love you - Whitney Houston I'm bound to you - Christina Aguilera Emotions - Mariah Carey These three make my wanna cry, they are so hard to sing but I refuse to quit practicing...
Amazing list…and many of my predictions were on the list, but one I thought would be on there was “Blue” by LeAnn Rimes. She has a powerful voice and it’s a challenging song.
I think Celine’s Ashes is harder to sing than My Heart Will Go On but let’s be honest, Celine can also easily fill the 20 slots because she has remained a powerhouse vocalist.
I feel like she's also impressive because she sings in two languages with English being her second language. Growing up French Canadian we listened to a lot of her French repertoire. This list was fun though :) Love Whitney and Mariah too of course - how lucky are we to have lived at this time with so many amazing voices!
Too bad she destroyed her voice and threw her life away to become an addict. That woman had talent other singers would kill for. And we're talking about it instead of listening to it because she cared more about getting high. Damn Whitney! Such a waste!
Notably missing from this list is Roberta Flack: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which is sung so softly, melancholic-ally, nostalgically, yet so emotionally.
@@ElsieDee001yup, it’s always the fixation with higher notes. But it makes sense as higher notes means bigger force of breath needed to be contained & controlled so it’s arguably harder than normal. But people dismisses low notes performances too much that it’s not fair
I got the pleasure of seeing Lisa Fischer at a Luther Vandross concert. She literally sounds the exact same in real life as she does in her video/album. Her voice is pitch perfect. It was awesome! I wish her career would have taken off as a solo artist, but I think she wanted to stay a background singer.
To me...she has the perfect voice and remains my all time favorite singer. Hers is a mix between Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey! She has the depth and power of Whitney while also possessing the vocal range and high whistle tones that define a Mariah Carey track. She is definitely underrated, but it is widely known that she resisted a solo career and was actually persuaded to record the one album we got by Luther Vandross amongst others that did not want her talent to go unrecognized!
Karen had an Angel voice, she was marvellous and no need to make such "beltings" performances.. a simple note and all we were under her charm and in paradise. These New singers seem as sport women, the one shouting stronger is the winner . Please learn from karen, we are all in love when she sings.❤
I can’t believe Edina Menzel’s “defying gravity” from wicked wasn’t on this list! That song is INSANELY difficult to sing! It has a combination of low and high register notes, vocal jumps, quiet singing, belting, breath control, and tremendous vocal stamina! It’s so difficult to sing that females auditioning for talent shows, and roles in musicals are actually discouraged from even attempting it!
13. Jennifer Holliday - And I Am Telling You. One of my favorite covers of this song is Amber Riley. I know its just a cover in Glee. But the passion she put behind it definitely brought it justice. 6. Sia - Chandelier. Loic nottet Is a Belgian singer song writer and dancer. His voice is absolutely beautiful and he killed this.
Great list!!! I would have choosen “The Voice Within” by Christina Aguillera instead of “Hurt”. Honorable Mentions: - Since You Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson - Good Girl by Carrie Underwood - Stone Cold by Demi Lovato - Too Little Too Late by JoJo - I Wanna Love You Forever by Jessica Simpson - You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette - My Immortal by Amy Lee (Evanescence) - If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys - Run by Leona Lewis - No Air by Jordin Sparks
It is so True about Christine Aguilera Incredible voice!!! Her range & the fact that she can sing in so many different ways just shows ge Talented she is . I don’t think I ever hv heard of another singer that can hit so many , many different notes , to so many many different songs from one person !! She is Incredible !!
Anne Willson ... Heart Patty Smyth ... Scandal Aretha Franklin ... Etta James ... Tina Turner ... Janis Joplin, Taylor Dayne ... That is my short list ... It ain't all about those whistle tones ... Its about the passion too
I was sure there would be at least one deserved spot for Tina. It's a shame, considering that beyond her inimitable voice and remarkable, powerful performances, she paved the way for many.
Anne Wilson is incredible. Also for more contemporary rock, Lzzy Hale from Halestorm. I used to work at a club Halestorm performed at when they were teenagers & her voice gave me the chills. So much power.
I think nobody can top Ann Wilson singing Stairway to Heaven, live at the Kennedy Center awards before an audience that included Led Zeppelin. Anyone trying to sing Robert Plant faces a major challenge just like anyone trying to sing Freddie Mercury. But she sang magnificently and Robert Plant himself was moved to tears.
Agree!!! it also brings tears to my eyes very time I hear this version. Actually I like it better than the original Led Zeppelin, sorry Robert, it's a matter of taste.
@@VONOBER I actually will turn the LZ version off, as I dislike it that much. I will voluntarily listen to the Hart tribute version without issue. I also would add Dancing Queen in here as there is a 2 octave jump in 6 notes. ABBA songs are an exercise in vocal gymnastics from start to finish.
She’s not relevant now becuz she chooses to be out but underrated never. However, I think her choice of songs could hv been better. I don’t think most of her songs showed off jerassice talent the way they should hv. She chose “runs” instead of just plain powerful singing on a powerful song. Just becuz u can hit 20 notes a second doesn’t mean u should.
If they do Males - Bohemian Rhapsody - Bed of Roses - My Way - Dream on - Best of You - Cry me a River - Your Song - I Will do Anything For Love - You Raise Me Up - Immigrant Song - Don't Stop Believin' - Sweet Child O’ Mine - A Song For You - Somebody to Love - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing - A Change Is Gonna Come - A Bridge Over Troubled Waters - Always - Go the Distance - Faithfully - Take on Me - I Believe in a Thing Called Love - Can You Feel The Love Tonight - Kiss From a Rose - Rap God - Bat Out of Hell - Livin' on a Prayer - Stairway To Heaven - Tiptoe Through the Tulips - When A Man Loves A Woman
Sorry but I really hate that song, those high notes really irritate my ears. I’m not a fan of whistle notes. Maybe I’m a minority but not everybody likes this song but I am sorry she died so young just like Eva Cassidy.
Whitney Houston’s Didn’t We Almost Have It All, Saving All My Love For You, Miracle and All The Man That I Need should’ve been on the list. She really needs her own countdown.
Whitney cannot be in ANY of the Catholic with these singers (much as I respect Christina A's voice too) - Nobody (nobody!) has a voice like Whitneys - & in her early 20s, watching & listening to her, just going into a "Recording Booth" as it used to be, & singing a song that Jellybean had just handed her; with all the ad libs & runs that she added; the first take being just perfect, her Talent & voice was unmatched & will remain so, I think - Whitney believed her voice was a Gift From God; & am sure she was right; such a shame what eventually happened, but her voice is still beyond compare🙏💜🇬🇧💜
The main reason why I Will Always Love You is so difficult to sing, is Whitney Houston herself. I mean, who wants to follow that? What she did with that song is perfection. It may not be that difficult to sing but it is difficult to sing so well.
Just let me say how proud I am that you have included Lisa Fischer! I absolutely love her song How Can I Ease The Pain. That song still gives my brain tingles.🥰
Aretha, Whitney and Celine songs are staples in singing competitions. Their songs are not difficult if you have the talent. But not a lot attempts Mariah songs. So many imitations of Sia and Christina, look up Filipino singers. Beyonce and Ariana don’t have difficult songs, wannabe pop singers can sing their songs, why are they even in this list?! Where’s Kelly Clarkson, Patty LaBelle, etc
Ariana and Beyoncé don't have difficult songs ???? That's why Keke Wyatt, Stephanie and Karen Clark Seard failed at singing Love on Top and doing the 4 key changes ? That's why Jojo, Jessy J failed at singing Listen ? That's why every vocalists in the industry were doing the Plastic of the Sofa challenge and the Drunk in Love Dubai riff outro challenge on TikTok recently or the Countdown run ?????? GTFOH
I love that this turned out to basically be the track list of all the songs I grew up trying to teach myself to sing! Clearly even as a kid I knew these were the songs where skill and talent were being served up on a platter
I totally thought “Emotions” should have been near the top. I didn’t think it would beat out Vision of Love, but I think it’s way harder if nothing but for the tempo with those runs and whistle notes. Mariah is a vocal genius.
I would personally add also "Think" and "Respect" by Aretha Franklin :D Modulations, changes in phrasing also are incredibly difficult, which requires profficient singer :)
This list was amazing. But i can't believe you didn't put in Tori Amos. Her melodies can be very complicated, and her breath control is absolutely incredible. Her range may not go into whistle tones, but many of her songs are difficult to sing. Also, Bjork is a powerhouse vocalist with a very unique quality. Her songs are difficult to pull off well.
On The Voice, the early seasons, she hits some amazing notes just offhand, no prep, while coaching. She has an incredible natural talent and voice, imo, maybe the best voice of the generation.
I think she gets the credit, but i see there are a lot of ppl that hate her and thinks she's too loud or she extra when singing which i hate cause she's one of the best singers ever. I love to hear her sing and the passion and strength she puts into her songs.
Do you all know why Emotions by Mariah is that hard to sing? It goes from a low of C3 - which is really low for all females, let alone a soprano like her - to a high of E7 done by whistling. Also, it goes from very low to very high in just one bar, so you must have control in your dynamics and range. Then, there’s plenty of belting (E5, F#5 and G5, which are high for most female voices) when the chorus refrains and when the climax hits. These are the real reasons that song is way too hard to sing, even without the whistle notes. Try to sing that song without the whistle notes, and you’ll get what I mean.
Getting older. Mariah lost her good voice at a 1990s performance. Now She can't hit the high notes anymore. it's not interesting to me anymore now I'm starting to forget about it. and left her songs and music forever
But Mariah Carey is not a soprano, she is a mezzo with technique, she manages to get her high notes. All of her abilities are due to technique tricks. Her singing voice is not a gifted one. It's not even strong. Even her background singers sings effortlessly stronger than she does.
@@ioannist6244 we’re talking about how difficult the song is, not about the voice. Before you go any further, Mariah is a soprano, particularly light lyric coloratura soprano. This is a fact; you can ask an experienced and professional music teacher about this. Her voice is small in weight but it has nothing to do with the fact that she can sing very well with that voice no matter what song is sung. Again, this is about how difficult the song is, so we shall discuss song structures only, not voices.
@@hailonghuynh very well then. She certainly is a highly skilled singer no doubt about it, but she so overdo with each and every song that in the end it lacks of any feeling. There's no heart in her performances, plain voice aerobic exercises.
Thank you for noticing Hurt by Christina. That was the song I absolutely fell in love with and mad respect for her skills, outside of the obvious hits. Anyhoo thanks for sharing!❤
For part deux, consider: Ann Wilson, Crazy On You. Aretha Franklin, Natural Woman. Eva Cassidy, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight had some songs with impressive vocal gymnastics, as well. Maybe a shout out to another contralto like Alison Moyet or Anita Baker.
You young folk... SMDH. How do you have a list like this and don't include songs from the playlist of Miss Aretha Franklin? The one and only Patty LaBelle?? The incomparable Ella Fitzgerald??? But Beyonce gets two songs? Nah, y'all trippin.
Well who do you think the ones who are on here more than once got their inspiration from?😉 they really ARE in here…just, “in-spirit” (I really do agree, there are a lot of unaccounted for names not on this list and too many repeated names.I was trying to create a happy medium🤷♀️)
That’s great but they said songs that were hard to sing. While are all of those singers are wonderful and open the door for these singers. The range may not have been there.
Maybe everyone here in the comments is younger than I, but I remember just how amazing Linda Ronstadt was. She sang opera, rock, country, pop, 1940’s classics and in Spanish. 🎉
Thank you, Donna. I am 74 and agree with you about the talent of Linda Ronstadt. I am a big fan of Ann Wilson (love Dreamboat Annie), but I also love the incredible talent of Aretha Franklin. (I mean, girl, who else could stand in for Luciano Pavrotti? One of my biggest regrets is not seeing him live before he was taken from us.)
Yup. I get so light headed, dizzy, out of breath and my throat hurts trying to do everything Mariah does in one song even though I’m doing them all wrong. 😂
Yes! Burlesque is 1 of my fav movie! Christina is amazing! Triple threat! Act, dance & of course her spectacular voice! What a extremely talented beauty!❤
Who is Mariah??? I Don't know Her... I really haven’t paid attention to Mariah. since I was in like seventh or eighth grade when she used to be popular, so I didn’t…” know about Her.. Who is she .. ? indeed what She did ?
My all time favorite is still Christina Aguilera's "Hurt". I always have tears in my eyes and that with my mid-fifties. Followed by "All By Myself" sung by Charice Pempengco (with David Foster on piano as well as Celine's version). Charice version has a step more soul. Before I might have forgotten ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All". Agnetha's hardest emotional performance. Also worth mentioning would be Carola Campagna's version of "Ti Sento" from Italy. Her performance at "The Voice Of Italy" in the knock out phase was incredible and unforgettable. That had me so touched that I was still vibrating with emotions few hours later. One should also mention Lucy Thomas from Great Britain and her incredible cover of "Somewhere" from the musical "West Side Story".
Celine Dion's "I Surrender" should be on the list. It wasn't even a single, but ever since Kelly Clarkson performed it on American Idol, it became a favorite song for aspiring singers to try to nail on singing competition, until finally Celine incorporate it into her Las Vegas show, and it is more difficult than at least half this list
Hurt is my favorite Christina's songs, and ranks among the most beautiful songs of all-time. My mom had an insanely incredible voice (nearly 7 octave perfect pitch range, recorded 2 albums, but chose marriage and motherhood over Fame and fortune), and whenever I hear this song, I imagine her singing it in her heyday. 💜 She was able to put several of these singers to shame covering their songs via karaoke.
Thank you for including Lisa Fischer. I had forgotten about her for a moment. I used to be a big fan. I still am. I just don't hear anything from her anymore.
Lea Michele gave many great performances on Glee.. and of course on Broadway. Don’t Rain On my Parade is great but Barbra sang A PIECE of SKY with great power !
I'm SOOO glad tgat you remembered MINNIE RIPPERTON!!! What an amazing vocalist. I think K.D. LANG should have been included. If ANYONE can belt out a song perfectly & with great passion, it's HER.
Top 20 (Mariah Carey) 1. Outside 2. My Saving Grace 3. Emption 4. Fly Like A Bird 5. Butterfly 6. Can’t Take That Away 7. We Belong Together 8. Bringing On The Heartbreak 9. If It’s Over 10. I Stay In Love 11. My All 12. O Come Ye 13. Holy Night 14. Never Too Far 15. Vision of Love 16. Love Takes Time 17. Against All Odds 18. Whenever You Call 19. Forever 20. I Want To Know What Love Is None of them can beat the Legendary Mariah.
What’s funny is seeing how talents shows move with the time as until Sia came out with chandelier you often saw that people would normally try originally Whitney (I will always love you) or Celine (my heart will go on) as the big ballads to show of voice skill now they go for a lot of Sia’s amazing songs
I think the most difficult songs were performed by Janis Joplin. I would also include in this list Annie Lenox, Edith Piaf, Grace Slick (vocalist of "Jefferson Airplane"), Tarja Turunen (ex-vocalist of "Nightwish") and Björk.
Janis Joplin's songs aren't hard. People just don't sing them because they're harsh on the vocal chords if you do them in the same style. It's a literal death trap to your voice begging for damage because Janis had terrible technique and leaned into it. I love the other women you listed though. Grace Slick had such great projection. and Tarja Turunen has a one of a kind voice with a character to it that is impossible to really FULLY capture. and Annie Lennox has some of the best deeper vocals you can name. Great musician. Very fluent vocals. Love Bjork too, though I'm pickier with her songs. Joga is outstanding. Are you a fan of Florence + the Machine perhaps? I feel like if you haven't heard them you would be. She's hard to get a grasp on because she does so many genres so a lot of people think they don't like her based on one song or something but, she's broad in terms of sound and insanely vocally talented.
@@iTeacupPandaABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE Florence Welch, she is amazing, I find she reminds me a bit of Annie Lennox in that they are both deeper voices but can bring it when needed, I do love Annie Lennox too, don't like any of the rest, Bjork's music doesn't interest me so maybe I'm not giving credit where it's due and the other 3 don't do it for me either. What about Amy Lee from Evanescence?? She has an exquisite voice, IMO.
@@CourtneyTunbridge79 Oh absolutely, Florence really knows how to . . . either find inspiration or nod to other women in music while still not mimicking anyone and keeping her own thing going. Bjork is really hit and miss on music. I love songs like Joga and All is Full of Love, Hyperballad, Bachelorette. But my love for her doesn't go much past that. I'm much more of a Kate Bush fan. But Florence has definitely managed to really be very versatile while always keeping what makes her special. I think you probably would be able to appreciate Grace Slick if you like Florence, but it's song dependent. Songs like " White Rabbit " and " Somebody to Love " are VERY projective vocally and something Florence uses as a staple in her sound. Huge inspiration to her. and Amy Lee is definitely a great singer. She's a bit of one everyone lists and loves, but she is great. I do prefer Sharon Den Adel and Tarja , but I like Amy. I'm also a big fan of LP.
I feel like some of these songs are only difficult depending on how you want to sing it. obviously, not all people can hit certain notes, like whistle notes or lower register notes, and belting or staying in head voices can be difficult, but also depending on how quick the lyrics are, such as love on top, where the lyrics and note changes just happen quickly. also, we’ll never sound like the original artists, which may be what most people want and why we “can’t” sing certain songs properly, but singing in our own voices, we may still be able to sing the song well or almost “perfectly.”
Although not explicitly said, it was implied that it was meant as doing it as the artist had done. Otherwise, covers like 'I will always love you' would be credited to the original artist.
Most of the time even the artist can’t recreate the song live. People thing that songs are all sang in one continuous take, but artists can spend days recording a song, and then there’s editing and audio “corrections”
⭐⭐Donna Summer⭐⭐ has three of many songs that she sings that are hard to sing. 🎙MacArthur Park 🎙Last Dance 🎙She Works Hard For The Money If the singer cannot sound as good or better than Donna Summer they didn't do the song justice. Donna Summer is the vocal queen of versatility.
I think the issue is a lot of songs that really SHOW OFF the impossible stuff Ann can do and are insane vocally? Are typically covers only her fans know that might not have a studio version or be on an album. So they're more obscure.
