Henry. I was in my first flat when we watched it. We sat up that night drinking afterwards talking about how their friendship worked, or they were never friends, listening to Nailbomb song "while you sleep" which samples the movie. Took our flatmate days to get past his shock at Henry how the "friendship" ended.
@@alexlazzerly3677 Yeah, I think it weirdly plays into the fascination some women have for Ted Bundy because he was so "handsome" for a serial killer 😒😒
Henry: Portrait of a serial killer is such a horrifying watch. It's been years since I saw it, but I can never forget the knot I had in my stomach for most of the movie. My friend and I, after watching it, just turned the tv off and went to do separate things for a while in silence in order to process the movie.
Zac Efron as Ted Bundy and Ross Lynch as Jeffrey Dahmer both nailed their respective roles. This proves that these actors aren’t defined by their Disney characters.
I think Zac Effron was a perfect choice because Ted was adored by many until he was found guilty for many gruesome murders and Zac certainly was adored because of his well know work in Disney channel
Definitely a choice by the studio and director that was questioned by insiders and the general movie loving public at the time (probably similar to John Cusack in The Frozen Grounds) that in the end were genius decisions for the film.
I think Efron’s backround just made him even more perfect for the role. Like that was one of the most mentioned factor of Bundy’s character, he was incredibly personable and was described as a heartthrob. So why not cast an actual teen heartthrob.
He was neither personable nor a heartthrob. He used manipulation and posed as someone injured and in need of assistance to get women to let their guard down.
@@lanagievski1540 literally its so upsetting to think thats what everyone thinks its even worst that some girls use that as an excuse to simp for him and make fan cams
Yes and I really enjoyed it but I was even more so blown away by my best friend Dahmer... Hopefully that one is high up on this list and was also a Disney/teen heartthrob casted Ross Lynch who's performance was just perfect imo.

No way, just watched it recently, huge Metallica fan, and didn't notice him, gotta go back now lol. Do you know the reason why he cameoed? Fan of Bundy case? Friends of filmmakers?
Well they should have for good YT clips…. When i hear a voice i dont like i stop watching…. Think watchmojo get it so they have al lot o fans☺️but some voices are nicer/hotter then others. 👍🏳️🌈
@@army4life235 exactly. I feel like Renner didnt capture Dahmer well in the role and the movie added way too many fictional things defeating the purpose of it being an educational serial killer movie
I may get grief for this but Zac Efron and Charlize Theron gave the two most accurate portrayals of real life serial killers. I dare say equal level. Zac Effron literally channeled Bundy. He deserves high praise.
@@paulwoodford6229 Definitely. If you watch the movie "Bombshell" you would be absolutely bewildered at how much Charlize Theron looks like former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly. Similarly; Nicole Kidman bore a striking resemblance to Gretchen Carlson.
You won't get grief from me. Both Zac and Charlize channeled their respective serial killers so much so that they remind me of the fictional Hannibal Lector.
There was another little known film about John Wayne Gacy called "Dear Mr. Gacy" and it's surprisingly good. It's about his "final victim" from prison.
I liked this film a lot. That kid got hella more than he anticipated on. I love William Forsythe who did great, but of course- Brian Dennehy will always be John Wayne Gacy in my eyes.
"Jeffrey Dahmer is arguably the sickest serial killer of all time" Albert Fish isn't mainstream like Dahmer, but I'd argue he's the sickest serial killer or the Russian boy scout killer who filmed himself hanging little boys. Not something you ever wanna google. That's what ended my fascination with serial killers. I really wish I can wash that memory from my brain.
Same bro. In my college English class last year, I had to do a report on a serial killer because our class was based around true crime. I was told by my teacher to research Dahmer, and reading what he did to his victims and their bodies make me sick to my stomach. Guy got what was coming to him as far as I’m concerned
What did you expect? Serial killers just to stab someone and call it a day? Of course there's horrible ones. But you know what's scarier? Literally EVERY politican.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is easily one of the best films I have ever seen, and one of my favorites. It does such an amazing job that I can only watch it once.
Zodiac is the greatest SK movie, I’ve seen that movie millions of times, sorry guys but memories of a murder can’t be 16 , that’s insulting but besides that good job
I saw that in theaters when I was in high school. After my friends told me how boring it was, I made other friends. Yes, you're right. Zodiac is the best.
The golden glove (der goldene Handschuh) is partly really hard to watch, due to it's creepy main character. I really liked it. It is not your typical clean-cut American films heavily focusing on the story and what it creates. The atmosphere is very unpleasant and you get confronted with very disturbed man. Not a popcorn movie like the rest of the list.
I swear, Zac Efron’s depiction of Bundy tore my heart with how such a seemingly wonderful man could actually have been that evil, if he wasn’t a serial killer he could have honestly been one of the most famous and best lawyers ever
2 is enough to be a serial killer. A serial killer is someone who has more than 1 kill at 2 different times and he most likely killed his brother anyway so ed was definitely a serial killer
Yep, and pretty much every "based on a true story" thriller movie uses him as inspiration, and heavily embellish details. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a good example.
Monster is my favorite, Charlize Theron gave one of the greatest performances in film history. Eioleen's upbringing was nothing short of horrific and unsettling. If she was shown love, happiness and understanding she would have became a good person, instead she became a tortured soul.
The same can be said for most serial killers. Troubled childhoods are one of the biggest commonalities in psychopathy. Also she wasn't a "troubled soul" she was a monster and a murderer.
She had a chance of happiness but messed up a marriage before she became a prostitute. Monster is so phenomenal film with a phenomenal performance. Even christina ricci's performance was well done
Yes, Reid said in the episode where the unsub was actually a female personality that took over an abused young man. The statement is found in the preface of the author's edition of The Shining.
Totally agree with #1: I watched Zodiac….and then rewatched it, and then went to search for more info about the killings. It’s (imo) definitely one of the best movie of the genre. 👍👍
Charlize Theron she Did Good Job she gets a Oscar nominated for movie monster that's good job 💖 few minutes ago 10 Anniversary Of monster Movie Starring Charlize Theron Christina Ricci Katie Reylonds She Lookalike of Ryan Reynolds
I’m so happy you included Snowtown, being an Aussie, it’s such a well known case and that movie is insanely realistic, perhaps too realistic, and the acting is Oscar worthy, highly recommend
I've read many criticisms of Zac Efron's portrayal of Ted Bundy, how he'd keep facing the camera and smiling, but if you watch any actual footage of Bundy, that is exactly how he was. Bundy was an absolute jerk, but his looks and smarm fooled many people, including the all the women he tortured and murdered. Efron nailed it, much like Mark Harmon did back in the 80's.
That is precisely how I feel; Zac Efron seems suitable when acting as Ted Bundy. Besides the criticism, I have also seen some people praise Efron’s performance in the film because he is able to capture Bundy’s charm and manipulative nature, as well as the disturbing aspects of his personality. Other than people criticizing his acting skills, I think they are also protesting how the film glorifies Bundy and his crimes rather than showing people that he is a violent and dangerous serial killer. People should note that the film was not intended to be a documentary, so it takes a different perspective. I have seen the comparison picture between Efron and Bundy. In my opinion, Efron shares a physical resemblance to Bundy with a similar bone structure and hairstyle, which made his portrayal more convincing. As for his acting skills, I believe that he has experience playing charismatic characters, such as his previous role in “High School Musical,” making him a good fit for portraying Bundy, who was known for his ability to charm and manipulate his victims .Either way, whether or not people believe that Efron’s portrayal of Bundy was accurate will depend on their interpretation and analysis of the film.
The one with Zac Efron actually did give me crazy dreams like where I was scared but wanted to know what happens lol. He did an amazing job in that movie even though the title is so hard to remember. The end though... whoa, give me chills I swear
By like 100 miles. Watchmojo has never upset me like this before!! Again ill say they went with the allstar cast instead of the PERFECT acting Charlie has provided us.
@@bekleedee Thanks! Love Evan Peters! OHHHH I just released you meant it was going to be a show BY Ryan Murphy, right? I thought you were saying it was just gonna be a segment on something called The Ryan Murphy Show lol. I'm really excited for it too, now. Ryan Murphy giving Sarah Paulson her own show was really good so hopefully this will be, too! Any idea when it premiers?
@@markalexander3659 sorry. That part could have been clearer on my part. I love Evan too. He's great. So far it's just showing as to be announced. I'm keen to see how it goes though. Sarah did amazing so I have no doubt Evan will be the same. Ryan has a knack for bringing out the best in his actors.
The most recent Dahmer biopic is getting a lot of flack but Evan Peters is 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘰 good in it! He’ll creep you out but also break your heart at the same time💔
Re: Memories of Murder, lead actor Song Kang-ho deserves a mention for his performance as the small-town detective. He's starred in a number of Bong's films. and is one of Korea's best actors.
Citizen X was great, but the USSR government was suppressing the crimes. Zodiac was also great. Curious why there isn't a popular movie about The Nightstalker (Richard Ramirez).
Citizen X was so beautifully edited and acted that my eyes were glued to the screen. I had trouble breathing. Cannot believe that more people haven’t seen it.
Absolutely intrigued, and obsessed by the whole genre, plus, you never know if you will have to use some of their tactics if and when you ever face a killer yourself, I mean some of that evil clobbering stuff could come in handy🦶💪🥊.
@@shoshanaloomer I also wanted to pursue that path, circumstances did not allow so I worked nursing the criminally insane within forensic psychiatric units. Fair to say tricky/hard work but rewarding and interesting.
too bad The Golden Glove is so low on the list, it was an amazing movie, harsh and thrilling, macabre to almost black comedy degree in places, but amazing
Fun fact: Jeremy Renner was initially offered the roll of Dexter for the show of the same name but he turned it down saying that he couldn't play another serial killer again.
Technically Ed Gein and Charles Manson aren't serial killers. Manson apparently didn't kill anyone at all but there is speculation he shot and killed a drug dealer in '69. And Citizen X was a great movie.
Citizen X is brilliant. This was back when HBO was turning out a ton of great movies (Barbarians at the Gate, And the Band Played On, American Splendor, Countdown to Looking Glass, Live From Baghdad, and Doomsday Gun, for example).
Changeling with Angelina Jolie was incredibly disturbing and hard to watch and As far as the Serial Killer theme is concerned that is a good thing.. I'd recommend it to anyone here who hasn't watched it yet.
@Megan It was revealed recently that Jigsaw was modeled on that guy. But yeah, I, too, would like to see a period-piece actually based on him. (9/1/2021)
I don't know if it would qualify since it was a three-part mini series rather than a movie, but Des, about the Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen, was incredible. David Tennant starred in the title role, and he portrayed the soullessness of the man so well. The series itself is more about the investigation after his arrest, trying to identify the victims and such, but... just wow. Amazing.
100% agree, Des was better than many of the films/tv movies on this list. David Tennant absolutely nailed the performance and bore an uncanny resemblance to the real Dennis Nilsen. Great shout!
Well, what do people expect watching movies about serial killers? They have to be grim. But, oh yes of course, i forgot. Americans need everything with a shitload of sugar coating. Maybe even a happy ending? Laughable!
Some absolute nonsense.......another thrown together by an algorithm list. Memories of Murder only at 16 followed by the awful The Frozen Ground 15 ahead of it 😂😂😂😂😂😂
In my opinion, Dahmer, My Friend Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, And Vile should have been higher on the list and Monster should have been #1
Man, theres a big difference between hard to watch for gore and or brutality - and hard to watch because of the deep emotional/psychological turmoil these killers endure themselves, brought to light by incredible writing/directing/performing. Monster was hard to watch for both many reasons, as many other on this list. Not condoning their actions or glorifying it whatsoever - but it's just fucking sad that some people are wired so broken that it breaks things around them too. God bless.
This may not qualify but I had nightmares after watching In Cold Blood in 1967. Also, The Assassination of Gianni Versace was chilling. Helter Skelter and The Deliberate Stranger was made so well. They were both made for television. Michael Burke gave a great performance in Ted Bundy.
Even though it was a season of a TV show; I was amazed by the season of "American Crime Story" that focused on the assassination of Gianni Versace. Darren Criss bore a striking resemblance to Andrew Cunanan, Edgar Ramirez and Penélope Cruz were equally impressive as Gianni and Donatella Versace, and Ricky Martin gave a great performance as Antonio D'Amico. It really didn't take much for Penélope Cruz to get into character as Donatella Versace; all she needed was a blonde wig, a tight fitting red dress, and a fake cigarette.

Monster should be #1 on this list. Not to take away from Zodiac, but Charlize Theron's performance is incredible from start to finish. Not merely the physical transformation, it is how she brings out every element of Aileen Wournos - from the vulnerable to the abominable, she portrays Aileen in her most human qualities as she eventually breaks down entirely to become the titular monster. You can feel a sort of sympathy for her, all the while fully aware of the horrific murders she's comitting.
Aileen Wurounos is said to be America’s first woman serial killer: her life and cases, trial, and death row journey are a deeply fascinatinating study of the intersections between childhood trauma and abuse, promiscuity, androgyny, lesbian lives, poverty, sex work, The State, Florida, etc.
