These are the days of our lives: It's sad because it's Freddie Mercury's last video, but it's nice because his final words to us are: I still love you. 🎉
Absolutely, that and "No one but you (only the good die young". Both songs really yank on the heart strings and Brian, Roger and John's sorrow is in every note, as well as in their faces though they gave their best efforts to keep it together.
No it’s “The show must go on” But “These are the days” is incredibly moving when Freddie looks at the camera and says “I still love you”…. they were both equally powerful and shot very close to eachother
the fact that Johnny Cash's house is run down and derelict is about the saddest thing of them all. I am surprised Everybody Hurts by R.E.M. didn't make the list. that song always had me in tears.
Such a masterpiece that the original by NIN was amazing and then Johnny Cash said “hold my beer, here come the tears”. RIP Johnny Cash and thank you Trent for writing such a great melody that transcends generations.
Everytime song by Britney Spears should be on this list. The video for "Everytime" still holds a lot of weight. The visuals are super emotional, with that dreamy vibe and the themes of love and loss. It really emphasizes the struggle between wanting to hold on and needing to let go. Given everything Britney has been through, it almost feels like a reflection of her journey. It’s interesting to see how the concepts resonate differently now compared to when it first came out. ❤
Actually, it’s called “How Could This Happen To Me”, Untitled is the name of the album. Btw, the son featured in the video--that actually happened to him and his family in real life when his real life big sister was killed by a drunk driver. If memory serves, he’s the one who wrote the song
Interesting fact about ghost of you and the black parade. Ghost of you was the last music video from three cheers for sweet revenge and in the video Mickey succumbs to his wound but in the next video in the black parade when he is performing on the float he is the only one wearing a medal a purple heart
“So Far Away” by Avenged Sevenfold probably should’ve been on here considering it’s about a member of the band who died in the early stages of that album’s development
I’ve only recently came across a still from the video in colour and he looks so much iller it’s no wonder it was in black and white I’m amazed he managed to get through filming
22:25 I was definitely expecting Evanescence to get some sort of recognition on this list 🤯 I was pleasantly surprised seeing My Immortal at the end 😊🔥
Yes how did a video where the angel of death goes into a maternity ward and snatches a baby in front of its parents not only not make this list, but wasn’t 1st? Also, the Uncle Carl scene. As a kid I thought it was a drive by but I think it was a heart attack and the angel of death uses the imagery of a point blank shot to nail the scene.
I think Who Wants to Live Forever hit differently (or harder) after Freddie's death because he was diagnosed with AIDS the following year and, well, didn't live forever, although at least his music will. I agree with other commenters, though, that These Are The Days of Our Lives and Only The Good Die Young are more heartbreaking, as well as Mother Love which was the last song he ever recorded.
Several of the Five Finger Death Punch music videos bring me to tears. The song 1916 by Motorhead (and the Sabaton version, the Motorhead one though hurts more) also makes me sad.
I can't believe "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor is not on the list. And "She's Out of My Life" by Michael Jackson. Both are very simple, with just the singer singing. Both are heartbreaking.
I don't find pleasure in feeling sad but sometimes I feel better after crying, a sort of relief. Holding in sadness can be detrimental for me. Thank you for the thought-provoking, interesting list!
What about Numb by Linkin Park ? When you're in depression...this is like holding a mirror seeing yourself naked and feeling hopeless to try to change...knowing you desire to be different but just dont know how.
“To the Flowers” by While She Sleeps has got to one of the saddest videos ever. It’s also really well produced. It’s damn near impossible to finish the video without crying.
If there was an honorable mention list; I got three good ones: "Cancer" from My Chemical Romance in which the lyrics say it best, and two from Avenged Sevenfold: "Seize The Day" in which the music video explains to seize the opportunity, but if you seize it late, it can spell disaster that could be irreversible, and "So Far Away" in which they wrote the song to pay tribute to their drummer and co-founder, Jimmy "Rev" Sullivan.
She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5 is a visually beautiful but sad music video depicting a middle aged woman suffering from domestic abuse in her marriage and a young woman getting her heart broken by her boyfriend cheating on her with her mother.
1) BTW Bowie's visual in Lazarus looks like it's from Jean Cocteau's trio of movies about the Orpheus myth. 2) The video for One by Metallica is pretty miserable thanks to the interspersed footage from Johnny Got His Gun. 3) The video for Megadeth's 99 Ways to Die is sad just for the US gun violence stats.
David Bowie and Johnny Cash releasing those songs just before their shift off this mortal coil, are amazing events that adds to their legendary status. Freddie Mercury recorded his last vocals 7 months before his death in November of 1991, but they didn't finish and release the song until 4 years later in November of 1995. The No 1 video in this list, doesn't have an effect on me emotionally. I'm a gamer who separates video games from reality. I can hunt for hours in a game, but I can't harm an animal in real life. I'll have fun mowing down 100s of people in a game, even GTA, but it would have to be a matter of self defense or defense of others for me to even think of harming a person in real life. I don't even like it when people talk about killing criminals, no matter what they have done, it's not right to decide who lives or dies like that; it just makes us hypocrites who are as bad as the people we kill. So the final video is awesome and I enjoy the gaming visual and comedy of it, but it doesn't really invoke any sadness in me and my epilepsy medication enhances my ability to get sad over things; but the tears didn't come for this one. Great design and nostalgia though, so it deserves recognition for it's artistic direction...
Honorable mentions: Coming Down by Five Finger Death Punch and Rise Above by Seether, due to the music videos and songs touching upon a sensitive subject of mental health and suicide among youth and the lead singer of Seether broke down crying in between takes of the music video for Rise Above due to the loss of his brother. And Beautiful by P.O.D. shows a little boy being bullied by his peers and befriending an imaginary friend.
unpopular opinion: my fave Queen album is "It's a Kind of Magic"- recorded as a Highlander soundtrack but they went off and made it something else. Who Wants to Live Forever is on it. Really tired of Bohemian Rhapsody- heard it enough, but happy to relisten to this album any ole time. - as to sad songs- there is a catharsis to indulging in the sadness, a little, on occasion ...
Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves is one of the saddest songs ever! And a little gem called My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion always makes me cry. There are so many great songs that you could have put on this list. But Hurt and Runaway Train always gets me incredibly sad. 😞
So far away by avenged sevenfold really is sad and just pulls hard on the heartstrings music video gets me every time as they said goodbye to their brother Jimmy the rev Sullivan
I don't think anyone should want to cry but I think we all have tears inside us that need to be let out. Sometimes, it's the strangest of songs that touches my inner tears and lets them out.
I know it’s popular to hate Nickelback but how did “Someday” not make this list? The whole video looks like a couple fighting and the guy trying to get his girl back only to find out at the end the girl was distraught over the the death of the guy and all along he was a ghost trying to save her until they’re reunited when she dies in a horrific car accident.
I used to wallow in my own misery, listening to music like the great Offspring and their sad video for Gone Away. I also used to keep the pity party going with movies like The Jacket. To quote John Astin and his character from Night Court, "But I'm feeling much better now."
One that makes me sad is Miss You by Aaliyah. The video was an all-star tribute to Aaliyah, who we lost way too soon. The late DMX's speech at the beginning of the video was touching.
I used to think Just A Dream was song about being at the wedding of the person you love as just another spectator rather than being the bride, I guess ya learn something new every day
How Can I Help You Say Goodbye by Patty Loveless and You Can Let Go by Crystal Shawanda. Both bring me to tears immediately. Played at my mom's and dad's funerals.
“Seize the Day” by Avenged Sevenfold. That shit DESTROYED ME! Especially because my best friend and I discovered Avenged Sevenfold one morning while he was getting ready for school. He would turn on MTV and listen to the music videos while he got ready. I was hanging out on the couch when “Bat Country” came on. I screamed for my friend to come check it out. As soon as it finished we ran to his room and immediately downloaded all of their music and put it on our MP3 players. NO, NOT iPods….. Old school, crappy little MP3 players. We rocked out to Avenged Sevenfold everyday. All the way to November 23rd, 2007…… the day my best friend died in a car wreck on his way home from work. 😖 I was just sitting at home trying to get my mind off of it while also remembering my best friend. “Seize the Day” came on and I fell to my knees and bawled my eyes out. I recommended it to his mom to play at his funeral because I knew he would love it. She didn’t end up doing it because it was too hard for her. Every time I hear it, I get really sad and really happy. I just remember all the good times we had in the short time we were given. He had just turned 17. I named my first born son after him. RIP Anthony! 🥺 I miss and love you brother!
I doubt anyone here knows the song or artist but the video for "Constance" by a band called Spiritbox made me ugly cry and I am someone that has a hard time crying. It's unbelievably haunting. I'd love to hear other examples of sad music videos if y'all have them.
“The Ghost of You” by MCR 😂 whenever I’m taking a shower or in the car and that song comes out.. I feel like I’m on stage and the world is watching me and I sing my heart out 😂 love singing along to that song 🎤 🔥
Probably because the subject of child abuse is so difficult to talk about because most of us would never even dream of harming our children even on our worst days, whereas getting cheated on and dumped is much more relatable and palatable
Also when you're gone by Avril Lavigne, thinking of you & the one that got away by Katy Perry, earth song/man in the mirror/heal the world by Michael Jackson, Cool by Gwen Stefani, my inmortal by Evanescence, Lucky by Britney, mirrors by Justin Timberlake
The video (+lyrics) that really got me tear up was Pain Remains I Dancing Like Flames by Lorna Shore. No matter how much relisten this song it still gets me😢
Mad World by Gary Jules, Zombie by The Cranberries, Lucid Dreams by Juice World, Cleaning Out My Closet by Eminem, Like Toy Soldiers by Eminem, and Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve.
The one that always brings me to tears is the baby Bye by blake sheldon The similarities between the dynamic of my family And myself be the youngest and then my mother's death Well was active duty army Resonate with me. The second. Is ones who didn't make it back home Once again. As an army veteran I understand this very well
Maybe not the saddest, but two sad music videos that I really like are Outside by Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding and Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough by Patti Smith and Don Henley
I‘d add the lyrics video of Avicii‘s Waiting for Love to the list. It does have a happy ending to it but the story of the dog waiting and then going to search for his owner who went to war and got wounded always makes me cry harder than any other music video. There‘s something so sad about pets having to go through something sad as there‘s no way to explain it to them
