One song that could be added to this list is "I've Heard It Through the Grapevine". It was first sung by Gladys Knight and the Pips in 1967, then it was sung by Marvin Gaye a year later. Creedence Clearwater Revival performed it in 1970 and Roger Troutman released a version of the song in 1981
enjoyed this thoroughly. I think you missed Manfred Mann's "Blinded by the Light" - originally by Bruce Springsteen- they took it and ran! I would also mention "Just another Manic Monday" by the Bangles - another song crafted by Prince.
What is arguably Tina Turner's best known hit, "The Best", was actually a cover too. By none other than Bonnie Tyler, who released it as a single in 1988.
LOVING the learning! Thanks for the knowledge bomb! Elvis Presley did a cover of 'Hound Dog' too. I actually think Elvis did QUITE a bit of covers, thinking about it now.
Simply the Best and Proud Mary by Tina Turner Original: The Best by Bonnie Tyler and Proud Mary by Credence Clearwater Revival Also, Valerie by Amy Winehouse with the original by The Zutons
Love your video!! Great examples of great songs! if I may add to your list - "Don't Say You Don't Remember" by me! (1972) I didn't know at the time I recorded it, but it was previously recorded by an obscure group called The Goggles. Writers Helen Miller & Estelle Levitt kept it from me, which gave me a chance to make it my own..
Pet Shop Boys: Always On My Mind (original by Brenda Lee) Joe Cocker: With A Little Help From My Friends (original by The Beatles) Laura Brannigan: Self Control (original by Raf)
Here’s one for ya Walk Right In by the Rooftop Singers is actually a cover too, the original version was sung by Cannon’s Jug Stompers, a musical group from the late 1920s
I’d also nominate “You Can’t Hurry Love” by Phil Collins, original by Diana Ross & The Supremes. Also worth mentioning “A Lover’s Concerto” by Diana Ross & The Supremes, original by The Toys.
After tearing Jimi Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower, Bob Dylan preferred Jimi's version to his own, and plays the song like Jimi's version in concert. On the subject of covers, a lot of Celine Dion's biggest hits are covers: The Power of Love, All by Myself, It's all Coming Back to Me Now, are all covers
Here are some other songs that many folks may not know are covers: "Waiting For Tonight" - cover by Jennifer Lopez, original by 3rd Party "No One In The World" - cover by Anita Baker, original by Dionne Warwick "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love (For You)" - cover by Glenn Medeiros, original by George Benson "Say A Little Prayer" - cover by Aretha Franklin, original by Dionne Warwick "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" - cover by Boyz II Men, original by G.C. I have been looking for the CARICE Lp and 78's of James ray. Both Mono and stereo. Lp's including "I Got My Mind Set On You" for quite a while now! (Over Five Years) I have always Known that George Harrison's version was a cover, but I never had the time to look for the LP's/78's. And yes, there are 78 RPM Disks of James Ray's recordings! and yes, James Ray Does have at least one other Lp out other than his self titled LP "James Ray" but it is a later LP and does not hold the same sound the Self Titled CAPRICE Lp holds
I'm surprised "Sympathy for the Devil" isn't on here, as the original by the Rolling Stones has been covered by many bands over the nearly 60 years since it's original release, most notably Guns n' Roses (used in "Interview with a Vampire"), Motorhead, and Jane's Addiction (used in "Sons of Anarchy"). On a recent cover, last year Bowling for Soup released a cover of "Hey Mario" by Patent Pending. On a final note, while it doesn't really fit with this list I always loved the Rock and Roll medley from Meatloaf's Hits out of Hell Album and the Meatloaf Live album, which is more than 8 minutes of Meatloaf doing a cover medley of all of Elvis Presley's greatest hits.
With #12 Cat Stevens actually wrote the song the original version by P. P. Arnold was released in April 1967 8 months later in December 1967 Cat’s version was released on his album New Masters
Or are talking about people under 25? EVERYONE knows Hurt was NIN-Trent Reznor famously made a comment about Johnny Cash. As a boomer, i already knew most of these. Dolly Parton Parton even complemented Whitney Houston on her version. Practically every big Joan Jett song was a cover
This list is a disgrace. There is no one out there who doesn't know that any of these songs are covers. I am convinced of that. So, instead of finding the 50 billionth way to get I Will Always Love You in a list, why don't you guys try to come up with some "actual" examples of songs that people "don't know" are covers?
