My personal pick is The Village. Some may say it's a great film ruined by its twist, but I think the opposite personally. It's actually a pretty typical monster movie on the surface. Even though it's set in the 19th century, it's still kinda cliche. Cept it's not set in the 19th century. It was in modern day with police cars and mentions of aircraft, with the elders lying to the younger people to maintain power over them. Sound familiar? It turns The Village from a generic film to a simulation of what it's like to live in a cult all your life, not allowed to see how the world has changed, in for a surprise if you find your way to modern civilization.
@TitularHeroine

I really enjoyed The Village too. I didnt really think abput tbe "cult" aspect, but you're totally right. How is Orphan a bad film, it’s a great film even without the twist.
@whiwhimee
@whiwhimee Год назад
Because the orphan who looks like a child tries to seduce a grown man. Many might take that as an endorsement of such behavior. Orphan showed improper behavior hence it is a bad film.

I really, really loved Skeleton Key because of the slowly building tension, the general mood and the lovely set pieces like that old building. And, absolutely gorgeous - SPOILER!!! - ... the twist on that "it can't hurt you if you don't believe in it" with a subtly implied but never outright spoken: "it can hurt you plenty if you DO believe in it". There was a lovely hint at that in the "then get out while you still don't believe" that one character told the main, and it flips so many events. Yep, I guess the movie could have been faster paced, but IMO that slow burn worked great. "Fallen" kind of suffered from an omnipotent enemy, I thought. If a demon can jump into pretty much anybody, then he'll easily bring down the hero: just get close enough to somebody super powerful and start dealing out punches. The fact that there was no protection against that possession makes the battle too uneven. Great acting, though!

Ender's Game is one of my favorites. Its one thing to want to defend your people, its another to think you have the right to wipe out a species thinking its just. The fact that Ender himself was manipulated into thinking that he was just playing a simulation, only to discover that he played a role in a species own possible extinction, little wonder he had a mental breakdown at the end. It was even more tragic is that the Fornex were just defending themselves and just wanted to be left in peace. I have to wonder if there will be a sequel eventually.

The books have been out for decades. Only the first one really lends itself to being a movie if I recall. What follows is Ender’s psychological redemption as the speaker for the dead.
@morgantaylor84
@morgantaylor84 Год назад
If there is a sequel it'd be nothing like the books which focus on Ender's psychological redemption and rebuilding of his life as he learns to deal with everything everyone else sees in him. Considering Ender's Game the film was made to be an action packed thriller, it's highly doubtful that the sequel would follow the same tone of the books, but instead would probably just be a rehash of Ender's Game with a different protagonist against a slightly different and probably actually aggressive (even if justifiably aggressive) species. Edit: I guess what I'm saying is do not ask for a sequel for stories that don't need one because sometimes there's very few ways to improve with a sequel and very, very many to make it worse. A perfect example from this list, the SAW franchise.

The book(and the sequels) make it even more explicitly tragic. One of the key parts of Ender's tactical abilities is his empathy. Paraphrasing one of the lines from the book: In the moment he fully understands the enemy and is prepared to destroy them, he also cant help but love them. We see it with Bonzo in the shower fight scene, and a few other places, with the final fight being the ultimate example that breaks him when he learns the truth.

Terminator 3 isn’t bad, neither was Salvation, at least when compared to the next to films in the Terminator franchise. Judgement day being “inevitable” and how John survived it are great twists, and I wish we got more films about life after Skynet destroys most of the world.

Terminator 3 had its faults, but I liked it. Salvation was a fun dark sci-fi film, but not a good Terminator film, because it's inconsistent with what were told about the Future in the previous installments (the machines waging an all-out war against the remnants of humanity everywhere, at every moment; in Salvation it was more positional warfare with occasional forays into enemy territory by both sides, and there were no energy weapons to be seen anywhere).
@BigBrianBruce

Fo real I liked salvation and still do I even liked the last one with Linda Hamilton comin back even though I found the terminator being old and not deciding to be a robot was silly I feel like it only has one bad movie which was genesis which was garbage. After salvation I did wanted to see a sequel continuing the war against the machines with bale coming back it didn’t have to be a trilogy but I did wanted to see one more movie about the war

I'd like to point out that Enders Game (the movie) is actually damn good, and rather faithful to the book by Orson Scott Card. Ender's Game was much better as a book, there were various subplots that they couldn't add into the movie that really push it forward. Smokin' Aces, the old man wasn't an informant... he was actually an FBI agent who was set to go undercover decades before but was attacked. When he woke up, he forgot his true past and only remembered the cover story. The FBI was pulling out all the stops to help a guy who was constantly committing criminal actions in the hopes that he would one day remember who he actually was.

Agreed, Orphan wasn't a bad movie, it was a great psychological thriller that succesfully tricked us into believing it was a mediocre horror movie during the first watch. When you first watch it under the assumption that this is your typical "child posessed by evil spirit" horror story, then it comes across as pretty lame compared to other movies that did that kind of story before. Until the twist is revealed and you retroactively recognize all the foreshadowing that worked up to it. The best about it is that all of her strange behavior that feels off for a child (even the parts that weren't scares and therefore could have been mistaken to be just random bad writing) make perfect sense for an adult psychopath.

Other than Eli being shown as blind or going blind at the end of the movie, the idea that he couldn't have learned how to read Braille, especially under the circumstances, seemed like a situation possible in my mind. Well, as equally as likely as everything he was able to do as a supposedly blind man. Shooting ppl that you can't see at a distance, outside, is just one of those things.
@RpTheHotrod
@RpTheHotrod 5 месяцев назад
They at least gave a few hints about his blindness. He'd only attack people once they made noise - a lot of scenes, he'd just stay still until you'd see someone scrape the ground or an object and then he'd fire at them. He'd also walk straight into a door with his gun out first, so you'd just hear a large CLUNK as the gun hits the door, then he tries to open it. He'd also nearly walk right past a car, but once walking past it, suddenly stop then turn to look into it (which is a real thing - sound bounces off near objects, so even in darkness, you can tell a difference if something is near). There was also the gag about a sign or something, and he apologies and says he didn't see it. XD

Leena escapes from the orphanage and makes it to the US by pretending to be the missing daughter of a wealthy couple. The husband/father is thrilled but then later the wife/mother and son/brother reveal they know she is not the daughter because the son killed her and the mother helped him cover it up. I remember being genuinely surprised when that was revealed.

Why am I the only one who thinks the first Underworld fits perfectly into a list like this? It really is an over-stylized crappy vampires/werewolves/guns flick. The whole movie you're conditioned to root for Selene and her mentor Viktor while just the sight of Lucian makes your skin crawl. You cheer when Viktor finally rises to kick some Lycan butt. Then the twist happens. You learn that Viktor is actually a xenophobe that murdered his own daughter for falling in love with Lucian and was the one that turned Selene to begin with. In one short scene the viewer's entire allegiance flips to the other side. Lucian turns from a slimy antagonist to a sympathetic and noble character. This otherwise crappy move really made me appreciate what a brilliant actor Michael Sheen is.
