+Connor Harte Him, Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) for truly SUPERB portrayals of individuals suffering from mental problems/disorders. I have yet to come across a person portraying a disorder who does it so skillfully as these three.

@@JasonMovieGuy Hi sir. I realize this is 8 years later but I just discovered this absolute gem of a video and I can thank you enough for creating it and putting it out there in the universe, as it’s a better place with the video in it. I suffer from depression and anxiety and whenever that flares up, I put on this video and it assuages my symptoms quickly and dramatically. On a separate note, I just looked up “Creep” from the “Social Network” soundtrack and according to iTunes, it doesn’t actually exist. May I ask if that was an error? Could it be from another source? Thank you.

Brando in Godfather 'mannered, silly' OK big guy. Any other actor would have hammed it up and turned the 'gangster' into a cartoonish villain. He completely played against that and created a the most softly spoken, family-orientated boss who never raised his voice and consequently was even more terrifying and realistic. He was genius.
@contractmed1
@contractmed1 6 месяцев назад
I'll have to disagree with you there. There is a difference between being subtle yet intimidating and being downright underwhelming. Brando in "The Godfather" and frankly any other role of his was definitely more of the latter.
@bailinnumberguy
@bailinnumberguy 9 лет назад
Very good list. Hard to argue w/ any on it. My list would have Brando-On the Waterfront and De Niro-Raging Bull (1)(1a) among Oscar winners. My best performance of all time would be for a part that didn't win an Oscar: Dustin Hoffman - Midnight Cowboy. Incredible performance in that film.
@contractmed1

My favorite performance of all time is that of Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946). He lost to Fredric March in "The Best Years of Our Lives" but I still love Fredric March and his performance in that film, but "It's a Wonderful Life" is my favorite movie of all time and Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor of all time. If I had to pick my favorite winner, I would probably settle for Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), my favorite New Hollywood film and one of my top ten, maybe even top five favorite movies of all time, and Jack Nicholson is my favorite actor who is currently still alive.

This is a very well-studied list, and I agree with most of the picks with a few differences. I would have Peck, as Atticus Finch at the very top, and would have fit Ronald Colman, in "A Double Life" in there somewhere. So many of these same actors gave great performances that did not win, Spencer Tracy MANY times over, and Denzil in "Malcolm X" and "Philadelphia." Bogie in "Casablanca" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," etc. Thanks for putting this together. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Awesome list! I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe Daniel Day Lewis could have been represented by My Left Foot, or Tom Hanks by Saving Private Ryan, but either way, this is a very good list. Seeing my favorite actor of all time at number one was awesome.

I was waiting till the very end and I was gonna tell you "How the hell could you leave out Robert De Niro?" then he was number one. Good list with the exception of Denzel Washington, F Murray Abraham could have taken that spot.Your list though.

Kudos to Jason - great job putting this list together! I feel the following have to be added somewhere: - Russell Crowe in Gladiator - Jack Nicholson in As Good As it Gets - Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies - Paul Newman - The Color of Money - Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou To make room I would delete the following: - Peter Finch (I feel he only won because he died that year!) - Richard Dreyfuss - Jeremy Irons - Colin Firth - Denzel Washington Thanks for making this wonderful list!

He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.

to be fair, Anthony Hopkins performance was more supporting than leading!!
@zachweeks3981

Anthony Ogans No. The role of Hannibal Lector was a lead role. He was the male lead of that film. Buffalo Bill was the supporting character. Just because he isn't on screen for the whole damn movie, doesn't mean he isn't a lead. It's not that hard to understand.

Interesting selections! Personally, I would not put Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump nearly as high on the list, but I was very glad to see Anthony Hopkins for Hannibal Lecter very high on this list. If you're considering Best Supporting Actors as possibilities on this list (such as Denzel Washington), then I would recommend thinking of Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men." Also, I love the music!

The nominees that year were fantastic. Gregory Peck won that year, but Burt Lancaster in "Birdman of Alcatraz" and Peter O'Toole in "Lawrence of Arabia" were fantastic as well, and I think Jimmy Stewart should have been nominated for "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance".

Some day... you'll have to include Gary Oldman... that is, if Oscars ever go back to being based solely about talent and they get around to giving him one. :/ Oldman is one of the most underrated actors evah.

He's beyond great in raging bull and the thing is his paranoia of his wife cheating on him and how he cant be close to anyone, not even his own brother .. he reallly showed great acting when he''s crying about how he threw the fight in the lockerroom.

Some really good choices :) but i would put Daniel Day Lewis for There Will Be Blood definitely higher (one of my favorite performances) and I think that Denzel Washington was very good in Training Day but in my opinion he was one of the weaker winners (he should have won in Malcolm X instead), but that's just my opinion :)
