Thank you for this video, there are quite a few games on here I haven't played and I appreciate the recommendations. The games I have played on the list I agree with considering them to be great and I especially liked seeing some love for Disciples II. That's long been one of my favorites and it doesn't seem to get the recognition and praise it deserves.
Civ V is the best imo, don't remember what issues I've had with IV. If I remember correctly, you could stack units on the same tile, and game was Square based (unlike Civ V which was Hex based). Disciples 2 is one of my favorite games, too bad there's nothing really like it, D3R was kinda meh, on top of being more of a HoMM clone. Disciples 1 is amazing too, a tad limited tho, not being able to pass a turn, can limit your strategic options. More people need to play this. I love Dawn of War 1, great campaigns. Only thing I'd complain about is lack of Tyranids throughout all expansions. I feel like Rise of Nations>Age Of Mythology>Age Of Empires 2. Age of Mythology has among the best camapigns of RTS genre. Additionally, Rise of Legends had great campaign too. I don't think that Total War regular series ever peaked over Medieval 2, Warhammer TW tho peaked over everything... One of my favorite games in the genre was Knights of Honor 1, it's a real time grand strategy akin to Paradox's games, but not as complex and obnoxious. Like... it's kinda lightweight. I'm saying "was" because Knight of Honor 2 came out and improved on every single bit of KoH1, like... when was the last time you've seen a sequel which didn't screw up something important for you? lol My favorite 4x game is Endless Legend, it's just beautiful, atmospheric, art style, especially map, draws you in, and some of the best OST to boot, it's just *mwah*. Different factions, play different, you can also make custom factions. Vanilla game didn't have water battles, they've fixed that in one of the expansions. RPG elements and skill trees on heroes were a nice touch too. Usually with 4x games, I play through them 1-3 times, and I'm done, never touch them again. Exceptions to that is Disciples 2 where I've finished all campaigns twice (didn't really bother with mods, skirmish and such), TWMedieval 2, where I've finished all expansions, and main campaign 3 times, KoH1 which I've finished 5 times, KoH2 which I've finished 4 times and counting wanting more, and Endless Legend, which I've had to force myself to uninstall, because I've kept on replaying it, and whenever I'd start a playthrough, I'd go into "One more turn" mode for hours... there were even times where I'd start and finish grand campaign in one go (20-ish hours...) And... shoutout to one of my early favorites KKnD2, whose campaign I've only managed to finish the last year for the first time.
I dont understand how you can rate songs of conquest higher than Age of wonders 4. I basically have not bought SOC because I feel its a just an indie version of AOW4 with less features.
For me Master of Orion II is the best tactical turn based strateagy game in space ever. There is a fanpatch out that lets you play it in dosbox with high resolution and super stable. Game is abadonware too, you don't need to pay for it on steam. Sure Alpha Centauri is great, too but MoO II is better, because its more fun, with its more detailed tactical space combat and you can bombard planets with bio weapons i mean this game released in 1996 with its iconic artwork, while AC is from 1999 and the graphics looked old back in 1999 allready. AC is just its factions, they were well done for 1999. Of course just my opinion who played these games since the 90ies and revisit them constantly. I think Brian Reynolds best game was Rise of Nations and not CIV2 or AC, its an RTS he made after AC, its really good and blows most of the other RTS out of the water. It has good game mechanics and many game modes it even has a multiple campagins in risk style and conquer the world randomized risk campaign, its really really great as it focus quite on single player with these various features how to play vs A.I. and yet had quite a good multiplayer. You added tons of RTS but left out a really unique one and perhaps the best game up to date in the entire Star Wars franchise, it is Empire at War, just check its community, mods activity and ratings on steam alone. Its done by former C&C devs now imagine a game like it on 3 different layers, the galaxy map layer to build and plan, the space combat layer with Tie Fighters and Star Destroyers and Death Stars(1+2) and the surface combat with infantry and vehicles. Rise of Nations and Empire at War should be on any of these lists if RTS is considered. They blow many of these games on this list completely out of the water and cannot be replaced in any way due to their uniqueness - show me a RTS that is slow paced as RoN with multiple Risk campaign maps and show me a star wars game wich is a good strategy game. There is no competiton for these games at all. For decades now. RoN, Empire at War and Master of Orion II where games that were about FUN. You feel the passion of the devs, if you play these games. Hence Petroglyph Games (former Westwood)patched Empire at War just in 2023 basicly 17 years after its release providing 64 bit support. Show me a quality dev studio of that reputation that does this? Btw, the same dev studio was also responsible for the excellent C&C remaster.
As in, what does 4x genre mean? It relates to Grand Strategy Games. eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate Games like Civilization, Total War, Endless Legend, alpha centauri, age of wonders... Technology, Economy, Development, Diplomacy, are large part of these games, and are usually alt win cons too.
