I mean when I get gifts for (Christmas, birthday, etc.) I’ve gotten receipts to return it or exchange the size if I didn’t like it but if they tell me “WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF THEFT OF THAT ITEM SPECIFICALLY, WITH A RECEIPT OR NOT I CANT DO A REFUND” then I’m gonna suck it up and just ask for money back instead of an exchange IF I have the receipt!

I mean I'd be pissed and record someone if they were calling me a thief. The lady wanted to make a return/exchange, you don't need a receipt if you gave your phone number. The employee said oh well we've had a lot of theft lately so no exchange without a receipt. The employee called her a thief. If it had been stolen the system would have shown it being unsold. 😂

Security can only detain shoplifters under shopkeepers privilege which requires reasonable belief of theft.

She's not allowed to do that, you know what that's called? It's called A ROBBERY ! . She lied to an employee by saying he started recording her and then she didn't do anything to him and he still recording her. She also told him to stay there. I don't know what conditions, or rights a security guard has on the public, in Canada and depending which province this was recorded in, so I won't speak on that. I agree that he's not allowed to record on Private property, and as far as why didn't he leave,...depending on trespassing laws wherever this happened,.. as I mentioned above, she told him to stay, so technically...he's allowed to stay. There are situations where they can delay someone...if store security suspects a person has been shoplifting and tells the Greeter/checker to detain someone they are simply doing their job.

Yeah tbh i agree that the situation is on the customer..a lot of times my store will allow a return anyways if you don't have proof of purchase but you get the money for the current price of the items...But some stores probably like big purchase stores ( home depot, auto zone, etc ) i can see requiring proof of purchase, period...And if you don't have it that is on you.

However telling her she cannot record is dumb and acting so hostile towards the customer..she also should have just called corporate and spoke to them.

I can understand people paying for an item with cash only. $1400 is quite a bit of money to lay out in cash all at once but I suppose it could be someone who doesn't trust credit cards or banks. They should be prepared to have to wait for their refund and receive it in the manner the business can return it. I'm curious about the denominations of bills that were given over at the time of purchase. At the hotel desk I automatically check any bills over $20. Passing counterfeit bills and then asking for a cash refund is a real thing that happens.

I’ll add that a retail place isn’t going to make that much cash that easily available for security reasons. When someone pays with a lot of cash, most of it is placed into some sort of safe that cannot just be opened at any time. For instance, I worked at a place where, even when you wanted to open the safe, you had to activate a timer and then wait about a half hour.

He also looked ‘not smart’ (He had one of those looks that makes you think they are kinda slow). He was also really paranoid. He thought that upper management was spying on him. I know this store as I shop at one as well. That Lady was completely in the wrong. I was also a security guard. By law she had to show her license which she didnt. Then the BS about him recording her first.. Some people get a badge and think they have the right to do whatever. Save on Foods needs to make sure the security they hire is properly trained.
