I’m shopping for a ARB function generator (relatively low cost compared to Tektronix, Wavetek, and Keysight) so I thought I’d share what I found at around 25 MHz for around $300 usd. I compare a Siglent SDG1000 series to a Rigol DG1000 series to a GW Instek 2000 series.

A New Kiss Analog video!! I'm watching it now! Oh yeah those Arb's are sick! True story and this just happened 2 days ago > So, I won a Rigol 1022G in an ebay auction. The item was listed as " Terribly broken for parts repair " so hardly anyone bid on it other than me. I won it for 72 bucks i believe it was , so anyway the seller was the Goodwill store G in Seattle Washington so i thought to myself how the heck did the goodwill get their hands on a arb function generator so i call them bc i figured there has to be a good story behind it. Girl answers the phone and tells me she is in the process of boxing it up and she hopes i have better luck with it than they did. i asked her what the problem was and she said " All of the buttons are broken, none of them work and it acts like it doesn't want to turn on" I was like what? They are soft touch buttons, how on earth did they all break? The unit looks new in the pic, i have never even heard of all the buttons breaking like wtf? She said , yeah and the plug acts like it doesn't want to work either. So get this, the unit shows up 2 days ago and in the box is the power plug they were trying to use, its a 2 prong you cant even begin to fit in the socket.... LMAO... so im thinking you have got to be kidding me, i know they weren't trying to use this random plug that came from god knows where so i grab a 3 prong, plug it in and it powered right up and works flawlessly!!! There was literally nothing wrong with it and it's in mint cosmetic condition. So i call back the girl to tell her that there was nothing wrong with it and that they basically just sold me a perfectly working device they could have got 3x the money for. she says " Oh my gosh, you got it to work?" But like how? all the buttons were broken. I laughed for a really long time.....I told her that the buttons weren't broken....all you had to do was plug it in. And she replies, yeah but the plug was acting like it didn't want to fit. I'm telling you Eddie, its people like this that make this life worth living, they make the world a better place haha.

Thanks for the video. My Siglent 1032x (30 mhz) generator was delivered yesterday...the day before you recorded this video. Like you, I would have LOVED to have had the 1060 60 mhz. but $$$ was also an issue and I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. And this is for my HOBBY, not for income. The 1032x is a NICE box. Beautiful sine wave throughout the range and steady as a rock. It also seems to be shielded quite well as when I take the BNC lead off I cannot hear anything in my receivers in the ham shack indicating they box is RF tight...which is a good thing. The 1032 does indeed have all the buttons the Instek does, they are just soft buttons rather than regular buttons. Frankly I didn't even consider any other box due to to all the great reviews and videos for the Siglent.

Kelly Klaas K7SU Thank you! That is great feedback! The rf interference could be a potential issue, so your sharing this information can be very beneficial to others working around radios.

If you haven bought one yet:-) You may be better of buying the Siglent, it looks like that your scope and the generator can talk to each other. I.e. record a signal on your scope an make the generator copy that behavior. You may have to look more at that to confirm what and how. :-)

Keep posted, I hope to post a video on a new scope today;)

Hi Eddie. Good video. I am using the Siglent SDG1032X (300 EUR => 340 USD) and the more sophisticated Siglent SDG2042X (565 EUR => 630 USD). The latter has 40 MHz, comes with 8 Mpts memory, 1.2 GSa/s with 16-Bit vertical resolution and a touch display. I am not using the touch because the screen items and icons are still too small for my fingers. I prefer accessing all the functionality via the soft buttons that do the job pretty well. Both function generators are great value for the money. The display is crisp, both come with a plenty of preset waveforms, the software to literally "draw" arbitrary waveforms or use a math equation works okay and once done, the device can read and store and reuse the data easily. Overall using both models already over a year or so I am still very happy. I am not a fan of Rigol at all because of their sometimes weird button and font layout mixtures on their different instruments. Siglent has a much clearer interface design and reached a very good precision and build quality these days ... but that is my subjective preference ;) And with Siglent function gens you can do the Bode plots when using also Siglent Oscilloscopes.

Hi Markus - thanks for this great info - I'm sure it will help others as well as myself! Touch screens need to be large for my fat digits;) Siglent is really doing a great job all the way around. I think Rigol has nice equipment but their prices are a bit higher I think - probably because they haven't adjusted to the new landscape and are still used to competing with the big boys. Also, I agree - their interfaces are different. Maybe I'd like them if I got used to them, but I don't own anything Rigol yet...

Hi, thanks for the insight. Does the SDG2042X come with floating outputs? Or is it connected to earth?

This YT truly is a good thing for we humans separated by land and sea to be able to meet and share. Hello friend, are you aware of the PC software of the arbitrary wave generator AFG-3051?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 5 лет назад
Hi Gustavo - it’s great to hear from you. No, I don’t know about the AFG-3051 software, does it work on its own without having the actual AFG-3051?

@gustavosarabia3885 5 лет назад
@@KissAnalog yes, you can disarm directly from the gw instek page and work with it. It has the peculiarity that the signal modeled in the software can be seen in the arbitrary wave generator or also in an oscilloscope

Have you wondered about taking a look at the very cheap ones, that seems to be quite popular amongst the hobby segment and on EEVblog. 14 bit 250Msa/s 60mhz. 2 ch. en.feeltech.net/index.php?case=archive&act=show&aid=65 74USD delivered. Bang for buck, you seem to get quite a lot of functions, though housing and look-a-like bumbers etc, will be rock bottom, but then again it ain't really a display piece, at those values..

Yes thanks for the question Jacob. I did spend a lot of time actually researching these and I think I found one or two I was interested in. But honestly I forgot to follow through. I’m so far behind on my videos - I keep thinking of ten more that I want to do;). I’ll jump on it;)
