I own a Europe EP2 sport which has Type R body kit and 5 lug hubs D16v1 which is dog 🐶 I’m getting a d16 y8/z6 swap to avoid telling my insurance 🤫🤐 of the mods hehe
I feel like there are always going to be people suggesting what you should do with your money, not just with car stuff. Just keep doing your thing, it's your process and you are accomplishing your goals. I recently went k series and I am enjoying the car for what it is but there are still people telling me why not boost or why not go with another motor, it just never ends from what I experience.
Very insightful and I agree. There will always be someone wanting the next step! But I am enjoying my process and I am glad you can see you just need to enjoy yours as well.
Love the D for what it is. I have 2 Y8 cars now and they both run great. When I did a swap I opted to find a full dedicated Y8 rather than mini-me one together and was worth the bit extra, it has had zero issues.
D series is a fantastic example of an engine that is simple, easy to work on, reliable, durable, easy to find parts for (thats going downhill nowadays) and torque-ier at lower RPMS vs B's which helps the use case. I have built many over the last 20 yrs, i blown about 6 of them from different stupid reasons, power levels, errors etc, but always came back to them, and STILL love them. Few times, it was cheaper to get a set of Eagle rods and CP pistons and rebuilt the engine and get back on road, rather than sell the parts. These things are stout and i would totally work on them again anyday. I miss it.
We still have D16's cause we are cool! Then we can give a few bigger engines a headache! More if you focus your biuld on lightness and handling primarily. 😉 I'm rebuilding my D16Y8 for the upcoming season. I'll try to meet up with you guys for the 2023 season!
Simple the most questions that I’ve received has gotta be relating to why I’ve got a D series instead of just swapping it. Like who’s gonna pay for the swap like I mean maybe I’ll swap it but I’m keeping the D series for now and I love it
Had my first taste of a Y8/Y7 mini-me last year with the Jackson Charger on it and boy was it fun! It was only on 3 lbs but was a blast to drive! I sold the car but kept the engine and charger. 😎
@@RefineMovement may have been a bad jumper. Unfortunately, it happens. Actually ran into a bad one about a month ago. Got another one and it worked perfect
im with d16y8 auto , my dad got it in 2000 low mileage , engine running nice and car only runs only 7.4k , the vtec intake were loud and clean ive blown the carnk bearings so motor was rebuilt in stock form . ive told to get power easiest way is to do manual swap , to b16a (kswap cost like over 12k in our country , or turbo charge it under 11psi but none of that were legal
My D series will be twincharged hopefully I can finish soon. I went from a b7 to a z6. When it was N/A and big cams boy did that VTEC pop. People also asked was it a V6 😂. But I love the simplicity of it along with the mpg and power I can get for my needs . 👍🏽
That u saying is turbosupercharger bro. Twin turbo is when 2 turbos are the same size and biturbo is a big turbo with a small turbo. I think u even't know what u talking about
Got my y7 block z6 vtec head turboed im pulling 477whp fully build head Supertech titanium spring, retainers valves ,stg3 bc cam admi and exhaust port ,integra type r style bowl .on the block, speedfactory rods And cranshaft vitara piston arp all bolts.
@@MarieDiaz-s6b do you understand what I mean by twincharged if not look up lancia delta group b rally car. It uses both a supercharger and a turbo together
Thank you man @9:00 !! Some people get so carried away with more power instead of enjoying the car for what it is… I love Honda I’m never changing up even if it’s lower Hp it’s a blast to track one ! 🙏🔥
I have my 1993 Honda Civic EX it has a D16Z6 VTEC engine. I love it, is very easy to work and very economical 💰💰💰💰💴💴💴. I recently changed the Timing Belt, Water Pump because it started leaking down the Engine by the Crack Shaft Pulley. I also replaced, AC, Power Steering, and Alternator belts. Now it runs very smooth and I Love it better than my Previos 2006 HINDA civic Si which gave me a lot of problems and very expensive all parts and difficult to work on news car because it doesn’t have much space to work it in it . D Series are very good engine and I love 90’s Hondas 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💎💎
Nice to see you back Robbie!! My journey with learning to drive at the track and work on cars with the d series is very similar to yours, I def appreciate all that has taught me.
Have the JDM D15B VTEC in my EF. I get asked how strong the VTEC crossover is…negligible. 😂 it’s a strong motor for sure, much stronger than what came in it. Once the D15 is retired, I will swap a B16 😉
I took the guts out of a d16z6 dizzy and put it in a y8 dizzy housing it works but still have the dizzy cranked all the way advanced soo d15b7 is a good idea
On my D16Y2 i needed a 1.6 distribuitor, no 1.5 one had same number of terminal connections (7) they had 6, didnt know those oval like holes set the timing, i just installed it as it was originally
Love D series as much as I love B & H/F. Still using a d16y8 I rebuilt 12 years ago in my daily. However I have only put about 25K miles on it. Put on the HKS high power just like you have recently and DANG I had to put a cat on eventually for the sake of my ears. I got big plans for this engine though. Baby Boost. Rods/pistons, headstuds, clutch. In the mean time I thankfully have other D16 long blocks to put in the car. Pretty cool watching you go through all this over the years, excited to see your plans!
I'm surprised to hear the HKS was getting to you sound wise. I do love that system and as far as Honda exhaust goes, it seems more quieted anyway. Compared to Buddy Club straight pipe for sure lol. Thanks for hanging out through the channel. Got some pretty sick stuff coming through soon.
@@RefineMovement I have tinnitus pretty bad amoung other factors. It’s still on my 99’ LX sedan which is what the d16y8 is currently in. I’ll be donating the HKS to my 97’ DX Coupe w/stock b18b1. Love the exhaust! I’m just picky about my daily.
Yo appreciate the video but what interests me the most is: How much potential do d-series engines actually have? Like noone talks about it since everyone is only tuning bs and ks
I literally have a track kanjo racer with a stock d series also running circles around people with b and h motors not the k guys tho they have to much power lol
Im going d15b2 + d16z6 head minime because in my country (CZ) Y7/8 heads are rare, and all d16z6 bottom are fu*ked on crankshaft. In that setup it should have about 120 hp + S20 transmition it will be super handy car
@@herbione639 yess the 90hp ^^ juste my mapping and catalyst if it is emptied alone and muffler ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nWR9W2VALsg.html
I'm curious, why do you run a D16Y8 instead of a D16Z6? Yearsback i built and raced a Del sol in a class that required being street legal. We uograded the engine to handle a small turbo, making about 350whp and it was a daily driver.
Most common question for me (EK Hatch) "What you got? Is it swapped?" Bone stock D16Y7 278k miles "That thing still running?" lmao yeah. Head gasket is leaking tho :o
If its not overheating or starting to, eric the car guy said that you can just change the head gasket and it will be fine as a daily! And see how much longer you can keep the “D” running. I have a d-series running around 280k KM havent done a head gasket yet but could feel it creeping up, as its misfiring and coolant bubbling!
@@30kendel update on my car: 285k miles, transmission took a poop and only 1st, 2nd and 4th gears work now but I have another transmission ready to swap in, headgasket still leaking but car still running. I plan on getting it fixed soon
@@whatheck6709 automatic?? I drive an automatic, and change the trans fluid, still red in color!, just drain and fill 3 quarts three times in one year is when I do it!, trans still runs perfect!!!😃
@@30kendel oh mines manual, I think the input shaft bearing finally gave out, causing enough play for things to not line up properly, which makes it not engage into 3rd gear and makes it pop out of 2nd and 5th gears if I lift the throttle 🤣🤣
My dads got a 03 civic with a d17 vtec that needs rebuild 320k miles want to throw a turbo or something to give it some pep without too much work like a 50 to 100hp gain
He forgot to mention that you can lock in vtec on a y7 with just the cam and lifters no need to swap heads and it sounds great and if you already have the chipped p28 then you can tune it easily and then not have to mess with your head at all
Been racing my d series for over a yeah in honda challenge here in so cal and In our class the fastest driver drives a crx with a d series. You need an aggressive final and a lsd. Driving it at the limit is the only way to get the most out of it.
Yeah, when I was 19 I’m 39 now but when I have my 98 civic ex coupe, it did eat a lot of oil. I’ve always checked the oil level every two days. Loved my civic but totaled by a drunk driver. D16y8 was not fast but it was really fun.
Get the real tire lettering stencil. Theirs a seller from Japan that sells the authentic tire lettering stencil. It took a month since it was from Japan but it was worth it
Im running a Frankenstein d16y7 im not sure what to call it at this point but i think total im in 600 buvks in with machine shop Y7 block stock crank Ported oil pump King bearings Cx racing forged steel rods Nippon racing high comp pistons.( slight dom) Y8 head with y8 valves but nonvtec y7 cam and rockers Y8 intake to gsr air box Dc works heads catless 2.5 exhaust stock res flow master fx muffler Very responsive motor and sounds crazy for what it is. My biggest question is why isnt it vtec. My simple answer is because i love the way a non vtec motor pulls and i ran out of money. But i do plan on throwing the biggest cam i can find in it when i come up on some cash. The car is also my daily.
Sounds really cool! Yeah, I can imagine you getting asked why it isn't VTEC. Adding a high lift cam and getting a tune would give it an even cooler sound. Or go for the whole, VTEC killer setup. Those sound really cool.
i had trouble with my y8 overheating recently. didnt blew a gasket, but block and head need to resurface. now, theres is a dozen of people said that overheating will always be an issue. can anyone confirm?
Not true. Just get the work done if you can. If it’s cheaper you can swap, but that engine should be fine with a new head gasket. Use something good though. Fel-Pro and oem Honda are my suggestions. I just did this on a b18b1 that overheated constantly. I didn’t do any resurfacing though. Just took the weekend to do a new head gasket and it’s been fine since. Even went to a track day the weekend after and it’s still fine. Most people don’t work on their own cars and just go off hearsay. And lots of it is untrue.
I have a question if you see this I just found your vid. I'm running a d16 Y5 block with a d16 Y8 cylinder head. I was told to run a Y8 crankshaft now do I need a different ECU for this or is my y5 okay? I'm going to rebuild mine and put a turbo I'm trying to learn I don't know much about the ECU just that it will need tuned for the turbo
I had never swapped out crankshafts on any d-series engine so, sorry, but I can't give you any advice there. From my experience, there was never a need to swap out any crankshaft. For example I had a d15b8 with a b7 head on it. Stock bottom end.
Absolutely. If you can afford a whole VTEC engine, then do that instead. Did it like that myself about three years ago and even managed to get the Z6 to run with the original D14 ECU. Just had to build my own VTEC-controller, but it worked like a charm. Got a P28 ECU after a year or so and it improved both power and gas mileage a bit, so I'd recommend doing that from the get-go. And building that controller was a goddamn engineering project in and of itself. Not recommended.
Hey mate. Cool civic, I had a eg sedan as my first car 20 years ago and still love Hondas. I’m about to modify a Honda TN360 Kei truck and here in Australia and the biggest engine I can put is a 1.6L. I don’t know if I should put a D series or a B series. What would you recommend being only 580kg and will be RWD..and do I keep it N/A or turbo? Will be a street car…current has 350cc bike engine in the rear..cheers Dino
My Y8 was burning a lot because the cylinder head was refreshed and it exaggerated the piston ring issues so it burned a ton. My D16a that I've had in the car for a while now doesn't burn anything significant though. Solid engine.
slow is a funny word, sure, there are folks that just want a quicker car off the line but holding speed through a corner is a bunch of fun and high horsepower doesn't guarantee a good suspension, brake, or tire setup. i love the simplicity of the d series. also, once you have higher horsepower if you haven't spent the time behind the wheel you just run off track faster or hit things harder. ill take a lighter simpler build over almost anything else.
Hmm this feels like a wrap-up on the D series... Considering the B is just as old, K makes more sense even though I understand wanting to gradually step up in power. Incidentally on my D16Y8 changing my PCV valve solved my oil consumption. I have a K24A8 in my Element, so I'm hoping its K time!
