@@sclarin2 of course, but I'd argue they weren't cave diving. They were diving in a cave. It's semantics (and semantics I made up at that) but it's important. A proper cave diver would have been using a line, breathing trimix, carrying three (or more lights), followed the rule of thirds (or sixths in some situations) and a bunch of other stuff. I'm not claiming what these two did is safe. I'm claiming that cave diving when done right is safe. With that said by cave diving standards Eagle's Nest is still super advanced and probably not a good idea for a newly certified cave diver.

Taking his son to a difficult dive for his first time diving is like letting someone drive for the first time on a busy highway. Unfortunately if the local rescue, fire don't have a coordinated plan of command at a scene, you get mayhem. Its also obvious from Alfredo's case the "rescue" unit had no training. And to double down, its also obvious that egos plugged the ears of the fire commanders. Not like I haven't seen that in the USA where firemen have tried to overrule very experienced Paramedic's decisions to the point of starting a fight and trying to block an ambulance. That's not an internet story I was in the middle as a police sgt trying to keep the firemen from keeping the crash victim from receiving competent aid.

Fathers are known for forcing their kids into bullshit they don't want to do
@lau_baril
@lau_baril 3 года назад
I worked six years in a scuba diving shop. In those six years, there was maybe four instances where fathers came in and wanted to rent gear for their sons to go diving together. After a few questions, I realised their sons were not certified, sometimes even younger than the certification age, and those fathers were not instructors. I immediately refused to rent the gear and they would get so upset. They obviously did not understand how reckless that was. Scuba diving can go wrong so fast especially for a diver who is not an instructor and who is in charge of a diver who is not certified.

I just researched the first story. It was quite a trip to reach the entrance to the Nam Talu cave. John and Helena had to travel 2 hours by boat to reach a small village and then they had to trek through the jungle for another 2 hours. After Helena's ordeal she had to make the 2 hour hike through the jungle again after being trapped in the cave for 16 hours. She contracted the life-threatening Weil’s disease from her time in the cave and spent a week in the hospital. This was the first leg in what was supposed to be a year-long trip, during which they would spend several months in Thailand before moving on to Australia, then Japan. John had inherited the family business and at just 24, he wanted to see more of the world before he settled down. Helena was only 21 at the time this tragedy occurred. She had to go to counseling to overcome her survivor's guilt , but is now happily married with several children.

*COPIED FROM MY OWN COMMENT BUT I FELT IT WAS RELEVANT AS A REPLY TO THIS COMMENT* I seriously don't understand why people in various threads here keep defending Dylan's dad. If you want to know how a father should go about partaking in a potentially dangerous activity with their son here's my story on the topic. It's not scuba diving but it is a potentially very dangerous activity without proper training nonetheless. My dad is a hunter. He wanted to take me out hunting and honestly I didn't want to go but I wanted the experience with my dad. I was 10 or 12 or something at the time. Did he just shove a loaded 12 gauge shotgun in my hand and tell me to follow him into some remote woods? No, he enrolled me in a hunters safety course that walked me through all of the basics of hunting and guns from the safety elements such as always treat a gun as loaded. Make sure you're wearing enough orange to be recognized by other hunters. Always unload a gun before storing it. If handing the gun to someone then the chamber should be open and the gun fully unloaded. Only after we learned these things and more were we finally taken to a firing range out back and given a choice of various gauge shotguns to fire at a target. We were told about the kickback and told to only fire one we were comfortable with as it was the first time many of us ever shot a gun. The instructors worked with us one on one. We were also briefed on how to field dress a kill(might not be the proper term, it was a long time ago and the hunting hobby didn't stick long). After that my dad took me to shooting ranges to get practice firing guns and fully comfortable holding and using them. Only after all of this and getting the proper license in my state did my dad take me out hunting. Even then, he kept an eye on me and was sure to check for any silly mistakes I might make. I remember him periodically asking if my gun was on safety and one time I got the color for safety on the switch mixed up and said, "yeah, it's orange," and he told me to think about what I said and put my gun on safety(note 1;see bottom). He was extremely strict about me knowing where my muzzle was pointed at all times and after going out there was a strict cleaning regimen to keep the guns clean and in good working order. The point of my story is that parents need to be aware of both their child's limits and, more importantly, their own. My father isn't a great teacher so he looked for a hunt club with good teachers that he trusted to teach me. He slowly got me comfortable with holding and firing guns under his supervision. Finally, he took me hunting which is what he really wanted to do from the get go. If my dad was impulsive and arrogant like Dylan's dad I might have ended up hurting him or myself by accident because he couldn't wait to have this experience with his son and just thrust a gun into my hand. It's only really now when I write this that I realize exactly how good my father is at shelving his pride when it really matters. Sure he gets hung up on a thing here or there where he absolutely can fix that car without help but when push comes to shove and the chips are on the table he has always picks the options that he thought were best for me and my brother and tried his best to leave pride completely out of the equation. (Note 1) To those that don't know there's a little button like thing near the trigger on some shotguns that when pressed one way, it has an orange outline and allows the trigger to be pulled and when pushed the other way has a black outline and prevents the trigger from being pulled. Different guns have different safety mechanisms but the 20 gauge shotgun I used had this style. As to how I messed up the colors; I think I just associated orange with safety because hunters wear orange for safety because almost nothing in nature is the same bright color of orange that hunters wear making them easy to recognize to other hunters and avoid accidental deaths caused by perceptual mistakes.

Spelunker Tullio Bernabei said nothing against drilling a second tunnel to reach Alfredino. A geologist, Laura Bortolani, said that drilling would be difficult and would take a long time because of the layers of rock surrounding the well. But no one was opposed to the drilling. It was only after the tunnel was completed and they were not as close to the child as they expected, that they realized the vibrations had likely caused Alfredino to slip farther down. Professional spelunkers WERE in fact involved in the whole ordeal and attempted several times to reach Alfredino. Many, many volunteers attempted too, and two of them did manage to reach Alfredino (in separate attempts, of course), but the child was covered in mud and the harness kept slipping off of him. There was no animosity between the spelunkers and firefighters: they all tried their best together, along with the many volunteers. The whole story is heartbreaking and dramatic enough as it is, there was no need to make it more sensationalistic on Mr Ballen's part. In Italy we still talk about it to this day. It really shocked the whole nation.

They were STUPID and caused his death! Yes the neighbor dug the hole, but the boy fell into it. The situation had already happened. The people solely responsible for his rescue made multiple bad decisions and caused his death. They were not only inexperienced, they were not dedicated. They failed completely, and do have the blame. But they cannot be charged for being unable to properly rescue someone. The entity responsible for the fire brigade's irresponsibility is the government! & as all corrupt governments do, they blamed the neighbor instead of admitting that they need to increase training response, effectiveness, leadership, engineering education, & funding!

All the other crew members were just following orders to do what they probably assumed was necessary. I guess the person who tried the plank idea could be considered negligent, but that would require questioning in my opinion to determine whether or not they were aware that it was not a good idea. As I originally started, questioning may have determined some were negligent, and others may have felt guilty, but it would set a bad precedent to punish everyone involved in a rescue effort anytime something goes wrong, it has to be determined on a case by case basis for each individual involved what degree of punishment there should be. A real world example would be individuals from a volunteer fire department taking orders or advice from one person who has prior experience of handling a given situation. Rescue operations go wrong quite a lot. People are found dead, or can not be helped in time, and die... This happens, and mostly without anyone doing anything wrong. Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. Salam (Peace) ------

I completely agree! Darren blatantly ignored & disregarded multiple signs warning anyone who was not an experienced diver to NOT go into Eagles Nest underwater cave system. Those warnings made it clear that anyone who wasn’t experienced (even experienced) divers would most likely not survive. It’s obvious that Darren simply didn’t care what those warning signs said, he was going to force his young son to risk his life for his own selfish gratification. So, the Christmas present he actually gave his young son was certain death

My parents got me certified to dive at 13 years old. Hearing that this parent just bought his son tanks and just took him is appalling and beyond irresponsible. To get certified, my brother and I took a four month long course that involved a mix of classroom lessons, textbooks and quizzes, and multiple dive practices in pools over specific skills. We had to pass a written a test, followed by a couple final dives in the ocean (all led by our teacher). My parents had taken this course and been certified themselves a few years prior as well. Even once we had a certification (and my parents have been all over the world on dives, including caves), they still ALWAYS took us out when they had a paid dive master with us. Even now that we’re grown ups. This was important because as my parents are worrying about things like their own equipment underwater, the professional diver, would tug my fin down when I drifted too high on the decompression stops (buoyancy and sinking can be hard to achieve). And when we had gone a few years without doing any dives, my parents signed me up for refresher course at the local pool before our vacation. I literally would have died if I was diving in the ocean. I was clearing my mask (only 10 feet underwater) and being out of practice, breathed in my nose. Not be able to see because my mask was off and having chugged water, I shot to the top and made noises I have never ever made in public, burping and gasping because I REALLY breathed in air and really couldn’t breathe. If I was underwater, even with a regulator, I could not have caught my breath, and if I shot up so quickly at a deep depth, I could have died. This was a really good lesson since I was so out of practice and was very careful not to make that mistake on my future dive. There’s a lot more to scuba diving than just popping in a tank and a regulator. People being irresponsible is the reason there are so many accidents when there really doesn’t have to be.

As a person who used to do open water swimming using a monofin, I always enpathize with diving incidents because THERE ARE SO MANY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS EVEN SEA WORTHY MERMAIDS can't see coming. Eddies. Two currents melding awkwardly. You gotta be ready for it to go sideways at any time and I had swim gear, not dive gear. My best choice in bad situations was an emergency inflatable boat and an emergency radio. That's what it's like ON OPEN WATER where you can see around you for miles. Also.
