Another good video Mr Chump. I have a notebook in my 8 x 6 ft greenhouse, of tips and advice about my first season growing chillies, here in Whitby UK and I bet most of the advice is from your channel. I have about 30 x 12" chilli plants, of 12 varieties that are rapidly growing in up to 20cm pots. Its very rewarding, seeing as though I germinated them myself, thinned out, potted on and hopefully I will get some fruit soon. I have ventilated my greenhouse now and monitor via a remote app the temp and humidity, I was already aiming for 65% which is good. Of the 3 tips mentioned in this video, I think its the watering I need to heed the most. I have a moisture meter but usually just feel the soil/plant weight by picking it up. So your additional method I will try too. With misting, do I need to soak every leaf or is it just a quick blast as I do notice plants suffering during the odd very hot day we have here? Keep up the good work.............................;)

Wow, I didn’t know the thing with flowers dropping due to low humidity. But now that you mention it, this summer was the driest summer in my region ever. And boy did my plants drop a lot of flowers. But the past week it has been raining quite a bit, and now they’re not dropping anymore.

Some great tips, I have a habit of overwatering so now only grow chillis in fabric points and a autopot system, got a Corbaci in a 8.5 litre pot in the auto pot and its not far off taking over my greenhouse, 4 foot tall with around 3 foot 360 span, 7 pot douglah and scotch bonnets coming on a treat too 🔥

Your plants are some of the healthiest I've ever seen. I think it's important, however, to frame these tips in context. I grow in a rather hostile outdoor environment, east coast central Florida that is impossible to control. You have to work with what is given. I think I've finally found a feeding regiment that has enabled my plants to survive all sorts of pests and airborne disease. Anyway, I've really enjoyed your channel over the years and thank you for another great video.

I've been growing mine in a raised bed (sort of), it was originally built as a flower bed for a 1950s house, but we've been using it for Jalapenos for years now. I spent years adding lots of organic mulch and fertilizer as well as cultivating worms. Never had to do much more than water and forget. I guess I achieved by accident what you've achieved through hard work and research.

Growing some of the more exotic types, in particular superhots which require a longer season, can be a challenge. The tips I show are about optimising growth. You are correct though, a good quality live soil will do the job to get you a decent harvest most of the time.

Hi Shaun. Grew peppers and chillies (shop bought plants) for the first time. Fed them a tomato feed and watered every day. When it got too hot here in the UK, I sat them all in trays of water and they grew very well. Beginners luck. Great channel 👍🌱

I liked this tip as well. I have heard people say that peppers can stop setting fruit during hot spells. Never heard the humidity need. Perhaps fruit will still set during hot weather if there is enough humidity? (I wonder if blossoms drop during hot weather because that is when humidity is at its lowest?).

This is some great stuff and all your plants in the background look very happy and healty! My cayenne plants recently started flowering but sadly lost a flower or two each due to some heavy rain/stormy weather recently; gonna try the misting method you showed maybe they will get a little stronger to withstand better the weather.

To my fellow uk chilli growers who use greenhouses or a polytunnels. I hope you all manage to keep your plants alive throughout this record breaking heatwave that's about to hit uk! (especially down south were I am). I have covered my poly with double layer of shade netting along with all these great tips. If that doesn't keep the temp under control I'll have no choice but to rescue all my plants outside and put under a tree. What's everyone else planning/doing to prepare?

Best thing to do...open EVERYTHING up that you can....all vents, windows, doorts. Luckily we have a light breeze, so the air is getting replaced in the greenhouses. Good luck to everyone....its a scorcher!

I lucked out where my property is. It's at the top of a west facing hill. I get lots of wind. My 24 foot x 36 foot garden, all of my smaller raised beds, my flower beds along the house, and all the potten plants on my front and back deck have automatic drip irrigation. I use 10:10:10 until I see peppers just starting, then switch to something low in nitrogen, with a bump to Phosphorus and Potassium. I also use epsom salts. Still love the channel.

Another tip I would suggest is looking into how to understand soil life and the microbes that live in your soil. A healthy soil might be the most important factor in growing plants.

@@ChilliChump you could still add microbes with JMS or Jadam microbial solutions. super easy all you need is a potato and some compost.

It's best to develop a healthy soil at the start of the season. Live compost, vermicompost, and mycorrhizal fungi all play a part in that.

I am with three chocolate douglah, planted them too late and prune them, they grow slowly, even slower when pruned, this made them overwinter before setting up flowers, now is early-winter here south hemisphere, but the lowest temp is 50F/10C, I pot them up to 18 liters pots, with a mix of 70% black rich soil, 20% peat moss and 10% perlite. The fertilizer I am using is only Bokashi and a kelp concentrate that has 15% kelp NPK 2 - 8 - 6, 1%Ca, 1%Mg, 0.2% Cu. they seem to like it, they are 1 foot tall with large leaves. 6 more months to summer.

Thank you for the tips! I should probably improve air circulation - currenty I've got no fan in the greenhouse. As for watering, it gets more complicated when some of the peppers are drooping while others still have soil pretty moist and I've got one irrigation system for all of them.

Good ventilation can help with airflow. If you have openings at the base and the roof of your growing area, then the air should be flowing quite nicely!

My open space fabric pot peppers are finally started growing full force and producing. I've neglected them on seedling stage, mostly under-lighted them due to wartime blackouts but now everything growing nicely. Although it seems my Anuums are a bit stunned this year compared to other varieties for some reason. In terms of fertilizer, this year I'm trying fertigation solution (for Peppers grown in soil) made from basic fertilizer salts based on recommendation from document "Nutrient Solutions for Greenhouse Crops 2020". It's basically 13-4-19 +4.6 MgO + 11 CaO + micro EC 1.2 water solution. I don't think that I'll have any problems with over-fertilization or soil salinity with this due to occasional rain, but we'll see. Basic salts are relatively cheap so there's no reason not to try. The other experiment - planting 2 plants into same pot haven't brought obvious pros so far, aside from saving some backyard space and money for soil mix. Some plants starting supporting each other and self shading, so I guess that's a plus too but of course time will tell.

Top tips. Here in Menorca my plants have been outside since March and I’m just starting to pick my super hots. I have to water twice a day and humidity is 80+ at any time of the day, temperatures range from 20+ at night to 36+ during the day. I have a problem with rats at the moment pinching my Jalapeños and Pinocchio nose, they seem to leave the rest alone.

If you have any superhots, blend a few up in water and spray your plants with it....the rats won't touch your plants after that!

Great tip about spraying,I do that every day now.I grow mine on windowsills,some are hidden behind curtins and they are covered in chillis where the oithers which are open are not.Warmer perhaps,more humid maybe,I dont know! I move them about now cause I have 28 plants :}

@@ChilliChump Spray at least every morning. Feeding them Chili Focus about once a week. Both my Ajis are producing pods, but the rest of the bunch just seem disgruntled. I'm sure it will work out in the end! :-)

The bees love the clover. So I try hold off mowing as long as I can. I also have a part of my lawn that I am rewilding. Great for the insects. The lawn is very healthy, even without much rain. And I get great quality compost from it when I mow. So I am pretty happy with the results!

This was helpful, but less so for people who do not grow in a green house. What about people who grow peppers in a standard ground garden?

The same things apply. If you are in a climate that is dry and you get flower drop....even outdoors, misting with water in the morning and evening will help set fruit. The nutrient requirements are the same too. If you are feeding your plants, then shift the ratios like I mention.

Very cool, I guess if your planting loads of seeds from a cross pollinated chilli, you can select the more desirable plants at a better rate to create a stable strain! I get so stressed that I’ve missed the perfect seed 😂😂 I’ve really been wanting to do a cross of a sweet bell pepper, and a very very spicy chilli like a reaper or even hotter, I’ve heard the seeds are less viable due to them not both being annums, would that mean I’d have to plant a lot of seeds from that fruit and then be selective in finding characteristics of both in the seedlings? Or would they all just revert back to the original mother strain? Thanks lol sorry for such a long question ahaha great video!!

Hi Shaun, some great tips there that I think I have gone slightly wrong with on some points. I seem to have a problem with some of my plants. I have grown 2 types of chilli, one is fine, but pretty much all of the other type seem to be literally dying. They appear to have drooped and shrivalled leaves. When I water, they just don;t seem to come back very well but I have noticed that the soil also seems to be very compact and water ingress is really difficult. I have tonight, soaked them as they have suffered even more with the heat recently. Can you suggest anything and what have I done wrong with the soil mix? Is it worth using perlite in the potting mx? I'm sure I did though. Also, I can set a fan up in my greenhouse, but it will blow directly onto the plants. I heard that chilies don;t like wind / a breeze. Would the fan blowing onto them be a problem? Thanks Phil

Thanks for a great video. I'm in my third year trying to grow chili plants of various sorts but they all die before producing any flowers. They die just about when I try to acclimate them to outdoor living and the problem seems to be that it is already too hot for them at that point. I live in Japan where the summer is super hot and humid and that makes watering really difficult to do properly. Not enough water and they dry out and too much water and they drown. This year my wife bought me some small plants that seem to be doing better than my own seedlings but I still have to bring them inside in the afternoon and give them water pretty much every day. Not at all what is usually recommended. I refuse to give up so if you have any good ideas that I could try, I'd be forever thankful.

If it is already too hot/sunny, use some shade cloth to reduce the amount of light for a few weeks. The way I do it is time my whole season so I don't need to harden off my plants. When I take mine outdoors, it is still very early spring with not much sun and heat.

Hi there. What sort of fertiliser are you using? If you have been feeding your plants, try stopping that for a couple weeks. It's possible you may be overfeeding

I will lay off the feed for a while as you suggest and see but probably a bit late in the season up here in the Pennines! Maybe they are just infertile if there's such a thing?

Does tomato feed need to be as diluted as it is early season, or can I just follow bottle instructions at this stage?

I would still keep it a little more diluted than recommended on the bottle.

Struggling at finding a fertilizer with a 1:1.5:5 ratio. Any recommendations? Closest I've found is a Farm Fox Grow Big which is on a 3:2:6. Would this do?

I imagine you are more on the industrial quantity side of things, but do you have any recommendation for where to find a suitable fertiliser around 1 : 1.5 : 5? the NPK is often hidden away in most product listings, hard to find!

Not really industrial....but I do make up my own nutrients to save money. What you can do is get some chilli focus or tomato feed. Then mix in some potash. That is high K. Should be able to work out the ratio quite easily. Chilli focus has an NPK of 3 : 1 : 4..4

Hi i make chili paste but it always boiled out once i packaged it, can you may be help me out as to why. I blend the small chilli and then i cooking in the pot with water, vinegar, lemon and oil. But if I refrigerate it boil out 💔

How long do you run your fans for per day?

At the moment, all day. Turn them off once the sun goes down.

Lol....at this time of the year, especially with the number of plants I have, there is a lot of moisture hanging about. So need to get the air moving to keep them happy!
