The Waki Gatame is considered a traditional arm breaking technique from Japanese Jujitsu / Aikijutsu. From there it is seen in Judo, Aikido, Karate and many other forms of martial arts. In TRITAC-Jitsu is a great concept that can be used in all methods of grappling combat: sport BJJ, MMA or life or death self defense situations.

The Waki Gatame is a concept of an arm lock or elbow break using your armpit. It's a very powerful technique, but takes a great deal of practice and repetition to become efficient at.
When we look at modern combat, we know that the setup / entry is the key to the technique. 'Old School Martial Arts' aren't wrong our outdated, they just require the solid / realistic training methods that develop usable skill-sets for beyond the dojo.

As someone who has trained with Steven Seagal’s direct students for some time, I must say you understand his irimi nage better than most aikidoka. Every point you made, from the thumb position, the role of the arm, the bottom arm bracing the lower back and , most importantly, moving your body through, were all spot on. It really is all about body position. I’m gunna try this specific entry next time I’m on the mat. Subbed

This is the proper range to use these techniques. In the clench. The reason Akido often fails is a lack of understanding range differences.

My judo instructor told me they banned waki gatame in judo from standing cause it broke too many arms. Powerful technique

Yup, it’s banned. Shodokan Aikido teaches Waki gateme, too, and it is also not allowed in Shodokan Aikido sparring competitions, because the high danger of injury. But, as you said, powerful. Too bad it’s not taught in Aiki-kai.

And for good reason. The point being that a wristlock is very difficult to pull on a forcefully opposing opponent, while the elbow/shoulder lock is not, but keep beleiving in McDojos.
@holdenmuganda97
@holdenmuganda97 3 года назад
@@henrikg1388 who are you responding to? We’re talking about an elbow lock. But wristlocks aren’t uncommon in bjj. In fact a lot of people consider them to be some what cheap submissions cause they’re always available.
@henrikg1388
@henrikg1388 3 года назад
@@holdenmuganda97 It was a response to @Mitchel Evans. It's the same thing in judo. In tight kumi kata quarters or on the ground, they occur all the time, and you need a good ref. to call them, cause they are actually illegal. I was mainly commenting on the utter stupidity in believing that you can disarm a grown man with a gun, using wristlocks. I say it is bordering on extremely irresponsible. This is no style vs. style discussion. They occur both in BJJ and Judo (kata), but have grown a bit out of fashion, and that is good. Then some bonehead "ju-jutsu" expert picks it up, totally out of context.

@MrKahunadog
@MrKahunadog 4 года назад
Yes. I still train in judo, jits. The 2on1 from under is my overall preferred grip(outside ijf judo) with the waki second as you can drive the person into a corner, window, bus. If he puts on the brakes you got an easy sacrifice throw or sasae. All the wrist locks flow off it. The Segal salute was cool and most people have no idea how that iriminage works, your explanation was good a tightening spiral on all accounts blocking the hip as the bicep screws the head to look away.
