"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is SUCH a famous song, covered by nearly everyone, regarded widely as one of the greatest songs about wartime ... veterans all over the world hold it in their hearts ...
As a Brazilian growing up in the 80's your list didn't ringed a bell so much. Specially on the top 10. I touch my self and the Australian crawl one were bigger here then any top 10 except for the men at work
No Johnny O’Keefe? Seriously, any list of best Australian popular music that doesn’t include the wild one has no credibility. No Bee Gees? No Olivia? Regardless of what you think of the music (and I rate them both in their genres), they were both global giants. Same for Helen Reddy. I am Woman was a monster. You can argue that Master’s Apprentices should be there in place of Vance Joy etc, but the omission of the above four is unforgivable.
Missing: Georgie Girl (The Seekers - head & shoulders above many of these), Turn Up Your Radio (Masters Apprentices), Ever Loving Man (The Loved Ones). But mostly I love your choices.
Really a great top (I'm a very big fan of 80's aussie bands) Honorable mentions, for me Hoodoo Gurus - Come Anytime (I prefer this) Innocent Bystanders - Dangerous GOD - My Pal The Fauves- Dogs Are The Best People The Faith - Seven Seas Electric Pandas - Big Girls The Dubrovniks - Fireball Of Love Devils in Heaven - Say a Prayer
True Blue to me is my all-time fav Australian song but I would also add I Am Australian by The Seekers, though I fully understand that this is not all about just Australian culture in music still I feel a lot is in there and it's also cool to see them in the honorable mentions.
Sport, The Seekers pushed The Beatles off number 1 at the height of their powers, had worldwide number1 and hits. They were more successful than any band on this list except Acca Dacca!
Good list. As a child of the 80s we get caught up in the nostalgia of it all, after all was a great time for Oz Rock. But we are a little blind to recognise some more contemporary stuff that is superb. I’d argue that many of the songs are not the best from the respective bands but thats kind of immaterial. Would love to see Eagle Rock and Because I Love You in there, as well as Alone with You Tonight from The Sunnyboys and my guilty pleasure the Bad Moon Rising cover from The Reels!
Thank you for the effort you've put into this great video! Along with some other commenters, I can think of some artists and songs that might have deserved a place on your list. Among them would be: "Stranded" by The Saints, "The Real Thing" by Russell Morris, any of the Seekers' massively influential songs, "Massachusetts" or "To Love Somebody" and anything from the movie Saturday Night Fever by the Bee Gees, and something by Kylie Minogue (the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time).
Top 30 Australian songs of all time....depends of your criteria? Sales, chart position, lyrics, politics. For example. A song like Great Southern Land by Flowers ( Icehouse ) sounds very Aussie, while Can't get you out my head by Kylie doesnt. Though I like both! Personally I would have had Sherbet rather than just Daryl, maybe Howzat🤷♂️ Other bands I would have liked to see are... The Reels, Quasimodos Dream The Sunnyboys, Alone with You Skyhooks, Living in the 70s Hoodoo Gurus, My Girl... Or maybe something newer by You Am I, Birds of Tokyo, Savage Garden, Sia.....soooo many to choose! As you pointed out at the end, there were lots you missed out! 🤷♂️🙏
I'm guessing that your age is maybe 25 to 30! The Real Thing, Most People I Know, Eagle Rock and Home on a Monday should have been near the top. Anyone that suggests that the top songs might change in the future is surely forgetting that these songs don't just disappear as they'll still be around and still be up there.
I totally agree with most of your picks, but would have had them in a different order. I cannot believe you left out the number 1 Australian anthem by the Seekers - I am Australian, and Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs - Poison Ivy, Mental as Anything - Live It Up, Masters Apprentices - Its because I Love You
Nice to see Hilltop Hoods getting props. Still, could have done with some Sewer Slvt, The Avalanches Frontier Psychiatrist and Intellectual Killer by the mighty Nasenblauten. Would have been nice to see some SPK or Severed Heads too.
Having only 1 song per artists instantly turns your list in to your top 30 Australian artists not just songs.... at which you lost me when you had Living End at 29
Actually, the most common description I have heard for Crowded House is "Australia-New Zealand band". Singer/songwriter/guitarist Neil Finn is from New Zealand, having come to fame playing for his brother Tim's band Split ENZ. However, after Split ENZ broke up, Neil went to Melbourne, where he formed Crowded House with Australians Paul Hester (RIP) and Nick Seymour.
I completely agreed with the list as presented. Until I read the comments and of course, the Seekers, Russell Morris, Billy Thorpe etc. but they are all brilliant pieces of music.
I agree with a lot of these but I’m miffed there weren’t more women on the list! Not even one in the honorable mentions! ONJ, Tina Arena, Renee Geyer, Delta. Also where are the BeeGees, Seekers? Agree with other’s suggestions too!
Some good songs, but a lot of boring stuff and missing some very famous groups. Not my cup of tea but how could you ignore the seekers, Olivia newton john, bee gees, Helen reddy, the saints, the go betweens (they even have a major bridge in Brisbane named after them!), Tim Minchin and the XL Capris !
Well done for putting out your list, it certainly has created discussion. If every Aussie put out their Top 30 , no list would be the same As l say, Opinions are like arseholes....everyone has one.
Australian bombers supported the Americans throughout the entire seige flying close air support missions. So we did participate in the battle, but we had no ground infantry in the battle. The song is also not meant to be about the battle, it's written by a veteran of the war and his experiences after returning home. Also, Working Class Man isn't a cover. The guy who wrote it, Johnathan Cain, never played it. Jimmy Barnes played it first. Though, I couldn't find any info saying it was written years before Jimmy met Johnathan either, it appears it was written for Jimmy Barnes to sing.
For reference, I am 16 years old living in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. In my opinion, this list isn’t particularly great. However, I think we can all agree that we can disagree over listings of Australian songs because our small country has produced so many great songs of varying musical genres. But I fear for the future of Australian music. Outside of Tame Impala, who is there of true quality? Haven’t heard from Vance Joy in a while, Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy’s times at the top have probably come to their end as well as the Hilltop Hoods. Bands like Ocean Alley are very good, but unfortunately go under the radar and do not receive the recognition they should. I see this as also being a byproduct of the decline of the Australian/ANZAC spirit and pride in this country. We are now paying the price for the incompetence of our politicians in wider society.
Australian music you described here is still so minor and even amateuristic to what the whole world brought in music. To me some good songs but the country needs to level up for sure to make an impact.
Only one Chisel, is not enough. Although you did choose the right one. Only one acca-dakka is not enough. Long way is a classic, so is Thunderstruck, and several others. Only one Midnight Oil. Beds are burning. US Forces. Short Memory. Come on! Eagle Rock, good. Solid Rock. Good. What about The Seekers? Maybe it doesn't work on modern equipment, but back in the '60s, on the equipment then, Judith Durham's voice would grab you by the ears and hold you. Early Robert Plant / Led Zep ~ had a similar electric quality. Something about that voice just touched your soul, grabbed your attention. Same with Jimmi Barnes. You'd think there'd be one Skyhooks song. Not sure which one, but ~ Horror movie? I wasn't a wild fan of the Gibb brothers, but they did sell a hell of a lot of records. Same with Dr Hook. What about INXS? You're going to mention Kyle, you better mention Mr Hutchence. How about the very first Australian rock star? How about the son of the Mayor of Bondi Beach? How about Johnny O'Keefe? "You make me want to SHOUT!" That bloke could pump out some serious energy, let me tell you! The song, the musical style, was so different to anything else going on at that time, at least in Australia. I think it was inspired by Chuck Berry and Johnnie be good.
Overall pretty damn good list. I might disagree with some of the relative rankings and some of the artists/songs, but I think if you surveyed the entire Australian population, the end result wouldn't be much different to this. I particularly liked and agreed with your song choices for multiple hit artists like These Days vs My Happiness, I Touch Myself vs Pleasure and Pain, To Her Door vs 12 other Paul Kelly songs etc. 👍👍 Edit: have to also submit my formal disapproval for not having Eagle Rock in the final list 😉 2nd edit: I reckon Live it Up by Mental as Anything deserved at least a shortlist - still holds up with my 20 something mates through to my parents. Again, great list though 👍
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, Eagle Rock was difficult to leave out. Another commenter mentioned that song too and as i responded to him, it was probably 31 on the list. Live it up is another great song i hadnt mentioned in this list and i like the suggestion.
@@solitudeausmusichow did you come to the choices you made? You’ve clearly missed so many better songs in this list… Evie by Stevie Wright was the biggest export yet didn’t make your top 30? Triple J and Triple M have it inside their top 20 countdowns of Aussie greats religiously 🤷♂️
I feel like maybe it's not as well known now as it was years ago... maybe it's all depending on environment but I think I only heard about the song through a forum
Great list!!!! But stop playing live clips as they never sound like they should. A lot of people from different countries would think the songs are shit! Because hearing the songs they are not the best quality.......
Hello to you my fellow Holden enthusiast. My 2005 VZ Commodore Lumina is still going strong in 2024 with 192,000kms. Have kept it in as good a condition as possible while being used over time. Gave it to my father in law in roughly 2010. Got it back at the start of the year for my 16-year-old to be the car he learns to drive in. Forgot that it handled so well (came with FE2 suspension, had it lowered more after purchase). Powertrain will never be its strong suit. But it’s a shame Commodore and Falcon are still not produced today (unfortunate truth is that producing cars wasn’t profitable in our small market). Best all-around value cars that have ever been made. As good as the average car is engineered today, driving something like a Toyota RAV4 is just not as enjoyable nor as good in most aspects. Reason why I have 2 BMW’s to drive daily now. The only cars left that can do what Commodore and Falcon did (better of course due to their refinement and higher quality).
As someone who listens to all sort of Australian music this was a let down. So much bland boring stuff here, the AC/DC tune hardly anyone would have heard of outside Oz. That being said, I am not Australian. You like what you like. We love you as a country anyway (from the UK). Keep doing what you do!
@@solitudeausmusic Yet they considered Australia as their home. I think they should have the recognition they deserve in Australia, because no other Australian artist other than maybe AC/DC is bigger than them.. After all Barry Gibb is the second most successful composer of all time, only behind.. Well the music god himself, Sir. Paul McCartney.
The tradition that marks the current contemporary music scene began in the 1950's. So arguably, given the title, your list is incomplete. By the way, Khe Sanh was an American base. No prizes for why Cold Chisel chose that title to sing about. Nui Dat was where the Australians were based. Still, Cold Chisel could sing about anything they wanted, just saying.
Not sure if you can call the 60's and 70's contemporary anymore, but either way I would have thought a Sia number would have justified entry into the top 30.
God, there are some doosies here and a very poor representation of the era in the 60's and 70's. Some of Australia's greatest artists / songs that paved the path for those here seemingly do not rate a mention. The great Frank Ifield who was first to chart at #1 IN ENGLAND. Ditto The Seekers. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. Kevin Johnson whose anthem "Rock and Roll......" is one of the most covered songs internationally. "I'll be gone" like Mike Rudd and Spectrum...
