I've read that fragrances have a shelf life from 1-10 years, with most being 3-5 years. If this is true why do people pay extra for older fragrances that wont smell the same as when they were bottled? Maybe a video on fragrance shelf life would be interesting for the community.
@@MPerry-ox9qb Shelf life is a marketing gimmick, nothing more. Stored away from strong light and humidity, fragrances last decades. My father had bottles from the 70's that smelled great and super strong well into the 2000's.
@@andreidanielpetre do me a favor and see if he has any Ralph Lauren Polo or Drakkar Noir bottled in the 80's. I'm sure he wouldn't notice anything missing. 😂
@@MPerry-ox9qb I have fragrances I bought in the 1980's that still smell great, although it's very possible the top notes are gone and maybe some of the performance. Citrus notes especially are the first to go. I question how anyone can be really sure that what they're buying off of Ebay hasn't been altered in some way. Personally, I would never buy a vintage fragrance unless I found it at an estate sale or knew a friend who was selling it.
I've read that the reason older (60's-80's) men's fragrances were so strong and tended to pick a couple harsh notes like leather or oakmoss and just beat you over the head with them., was because they had to be to compete with the cigarette smoke filled social gatherings of the day. That's also the reason the classics have been reformulated and toned down a lot these days. When you do find a bottle of the original, a few sprays are usually strong enough to clear out an entire room.
I know from experience as I have gotten older that my sense of smell has changed and gotten weaker. Therefore now I prefer stronger more complex scents
Absolutely, one of my favorites. I am a Lagerfeld enthusiast and remarked that I think the current version is even better than the original. I own both. One of the few that is just as good or better.
@@TheRealBrook1968 Hey quick question I have never been complemented like when I wore Langerfeld But I thought it got way weaker over the years Where are you getting yours from ?
Ok, one thing that may be confusing about Polo, is that it was reformulated about 15 or 20 years ago but recently reformulated back again ( around 2019) to smell closer to the way it did in the '70s and '80s. For instance if you have a 2012 13 or 14 bottle let's say, it's not going to smell as great or string as either a bottle from the 70s 80s or 90s, or one from 2020. For almost 20 years in a row Polo took away the strong sour pine note and added a Christmas tree air freshener note. In 2019 they added the sour pine again and took out that Christmas tree air freshener crap. So it's complex when someone says new versus old Polo. My 2020 bottle smells amazing. But the 2015 bottle dose not. Just keep this in mind when searching for polo make sure you get at least 2019 and up. I thought it was me imagining things until I found other people saying that and even saw a video here on RU-vid about how they reformulated it to a Glory Day. So happy it's somewhat back to og status
Bless you for this. This list is made for me. I'm 38 but grew up getting hand-me-downs from my uncles and Dad. I still prefer these scents to most modern creations. I'm going to get a cup of coffee and sit down with this one
Flagship Aramis is still a fabulous fragrance and will be forevermore. It is like one of your female colleagues said in an earlier video: yes, it's a "Dad scent," IF your Dad has been a badass his entire life, from having a van and being in a rock band in high school to being a heavyweight in a board room today. An Aramis TV ad said it years ago: "a statement of classical elegance for the established man." Aramis Havana is great too - all the Aramis fragrances in my collection - flagship, Devin, 900, and Havana - are among my favorites.
- There is no Hermes at all. They have an amazing classic line, that smells fantastic even nowadays. - I have Antaeus bottle from early nineties, and I completely disagree with you. Latest version smells almost the same, has not so great performance though. - Latest reformulation of the Fahrenheit(starting from December of 2019) has excellent performance and it is more leathery. Almost like it used to be till 2000. I’ve stock up already :)
Pour Monsieur (edt) is one of my favorite classics. Harder to find the edt in the US, but it's worth trying to locate. Amazing citrus and gentlemanly scent with strong performance for an edt with citrus.
I have a number of these including Dior Fahrenheit, Eau Sauvage, and Dune. They're all lovely. I would add Quarum by Antonio Puig, a solid "old school" scent. Not quite as sophisticated as the Dior offerings but it is a good reminder of what the 80's powerhouse fragrances used to be. As for your theory on reformulations, it's hard to know why the old scents no longer are the same. Health regulations and the elimination of some components may be part of it. A scarcity of resources that create the need to find alternative ingredients? Reformulating to update the scent it to a modern audience? Whatever the case, reformulations seem to eliminate so many classic scents as a choice for modern collectors unless they want to pay outrageous amounts for "vintage" bottles. Such a shame.
I enjoyed this video! Thank you! My dad wore Aramis Aramis and it smelled so wonderful. It was everywhere -wildly popular-as was Drakkar Noir and Ralph Lauren green. My grandparents gave me a bottle of the women’s Polo edp which was wildly popular for a while in the late 70’s/early 80’s. It had that cool red bottle that looked like the end of a cane. My father in law still wears the blue flanker. My former husband wore Grey Flannel and Z-14 in the early 80’s. I remember Grey Flannel being very strong if not overpowering with huge sillage. It was very distinctive. I loved Z-14. I chuckled at the Alfred Sung bottle. I have worn Sung for women for decades.I’ve looked for a new more updated scent for at least 10 years and I’ve not found anything yet that I’m wild about it lasts as long but the bottle is identical to women’s perfume. Sung for women hasn’t changed through the years that I’ve noticed. I still love it. (I recently purchased Miss Dior Cherie which is discontinued unfortunately). Sauvage is the bomb. My son wears it or else I’d buy it for my husband. I love it so much I’d consider wearing it myself! Love your videos-especially the ones for women but I like my man to smell sexy too! 💖
If there was Oscars for fragrance videos, this one probably win for “Best TOP video for men” of the year! ⚡️🔥👏🏽 And yes, maybe we forgot two babies for this - Caron Yatagan & Salvador Dali Pour Homme ☺️
Great list and nice insight! I'm very curious what do you think about Boucheron Jaipur Homme (EDP) and YSL Opium Pour Homme (EDT). I think that even today, both are very good. Opium PH is stellar as a matter of fact. P.S. I'm sold and I will get the Guerlain Heritage EDT (I know you said it's better than the EDP).
Jaipur Homme is pretty good. I have the edt version and it smells very classy gentleman like. It doesn't smell very dated to me. The drydown is probably the best part which people say is emphasized more in the edp.
Great list but I was hoping to see the Classic Lagerfeld. It was purely a beautiful fragrance in the late 70's and throughout the 80s. But with the Ifra restrictions and the many reformulations, now it's just a visual relic from the past.
Lots of wonderful fragrances! The original Allure Homme is somewhat underrated, good to see it high on the list. I would also recommend Monsieur de Givenchy from an earlier era.
Being a teen in the 80s…my thoughts and some clash with the womens….drakar my FAV on men!! It’s sexual attraction hits you and Polo for fresh first date drakar for the third date!! ;) womens poison is my fav still wear it but not the same! Obsession for men again that soft sexual undertone like drakar it brings me in for more ( same as old spice! Ha) …is it musk? Idk 🤷♀️ the weird thing ? Obsession for women had a note so strong it gave me a headache ick and ewww for eternity also a head ache and ck one another headache ….but mens obsession mmmm. Fahrenheit is my LEAST fav!! And Joop for men not too bad…but honestly drakar or Old spice and I’m happy
Love this Throwback !! I’ve worn 95% of this collection; however, I’m surprised one of my all time favs didn’t make it on your list.... Van Cleef and Arpel’s Pour Homme - Simply a Classic Men’s Fragrance that lasts all day! Thanks !
If I were to add to his list it would be Ralph Lauren-SAFARI. Glad to see some of my top ones listed though. Polo, Grey Flannel, Drakkar, Caron Pour Homme.
Two that I think could be added to the list are: Giorgio For Men-Giorgio Beverly Hills Joop! Homme-Joop! A great list, a few on it that I still need to visit

You dont hear about pines , ferns , furs good thing where have you gone ? I dont see how sents can be dated their timeless . Tobacco leaves smell sweet
I always wonder. If someone compliments a clothing your wear or a smell or a haircut. Isn't it more a compliment for the person that created the product? Whenever I get complimented about my style whatsoever I of course say thanks but in my mind I'm thinking the compliment really goes to the person who crafted the shirt etc. Or is my concept of that confusing?
2015-present Fahrenheit brought it back and it is much richer again. The drydown compared to my vintage is practically identical. The differences are in the opening which is more herbal fresh and natural in my vintage, then drying to the petrol accord. 2015-present's petrol accord smells fumey from the beginning, and smells more of a "precise unifying accord" throughout to me.
Interesting! I started late with this perfume hobby and after having about 20+ plus bottled, mostly due to hype, I find that I much prefer these vintage power houses which I wore back in the days. And so Im repuechasing the classics and wearing em back as my signature.
Drakkar does not smell the same, it's now a very watered down barbershop fragrance. Nothing like the original and it's a shame as it was such a unique smell.
Geoffrey beene grey flannel is my favourite among all the fragrance I ever used. I'm 27 this year. Damnnn. It actually gives me confidence. I hope people in their 20s actually try this once.
Thanks Perfume Guy - I just ordered Gentleman 1974 again. I gave my last bottle away. I then bought two modern Gentleman Flankers, ie Privee and Boisee. I miss the 1974, the Patchoili just so to my nose perfection. So back to 1974 it is. I do not recommend the Flankers.
As you mentioned Zino Davidoff which in the days like well 30-35 years ago was my to go scent for colder month and in the warmer months I used Davidoff classic, which I think deserves a place in this list. Never smelled anything similar again and unfortunately it is discontinued. If you know of a scent in this direction, maybe a bit refreshed i would be very grateful.
I think the fixative they use have changed the reason it was all stronger was ingredient availability. I am also confused why the 80 and 90s version were just better and stronger. I wish I could get am OG of aqua de go
you are missing some real heavy hitters from the past The baron cologne, 1881 Cerruti, Boss Spirit, Santos by Cartier, Trussardi Uomo, Tuscany by Aramis, Derby by Guerlain, Givenchy Xeryus, Iquitos by Alain Delon, Lagerfeld Classic, Chanel Egoiste, Boucheron Pour Homme, Herrera for Men, Versace Versus, Minotaure by Paloma Picasso.
Ralph Lauren - Safari (before reformulation) Karl Lagerfeld - Lagerfeld EDT (Now Classic (Before reformulation) Oscar de la Renta - Pour Lui (Before reformulation) Cartier Santos de Cartier (before reformulation) Those could also get on to that list when they had it's original formulation! Now I'm not so sure!
I love Polo (green), I know it is not was it once was, but I still love it so bad! I have so many memories with that fragrance I can't even tell! LOVE IT.
Love the Sung Homme shoutout! A legitimate classic. Two other more recent fragrances by Sung were "Hei" and "Paradise" and were readily available in Canada as most Canadian fragrance lovers can attest....
Excellent vlog! Great memories, what a trip... I would mention Aramis Tuscany, 900, Devin and New West, but that just because I loved them all! 😉 Hermes' Bel Ami would make the list for me as well. Perhaps unknown to you Henry M. (from Ellen Betrix), City as well as Country - these were my first fragrances, as a school boy.
Pozdrawiam z Polski .
I have a vintage version of Grey Flannel.....its AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In a suit at work it come across as uniquely sophisticated and gets compliments. Its a fragrance akin to A*Men in that it has to be given time on the skin to understand just how special it is. Straight out of the bottle to an unaccustomed nose it can be a bit shocking. Lol
I felt weird entering a vape shop last week wearing vintage kouros. I could tell i was blasting the whole place with that Urinous honey jasmine combo. I'm 23 lol
I have an original bottles of Antaeus and a newer bottle and yes not the same. Was never a fan of the original Polo green. Every guy in the clubs back in the 80s worethat scent and I mean every guy. Talk about over spray.
I think it’s pretty good as well. I wonder if it’s skin chemistry or weather dependent. I really don’t expect any fresh citrus scent to last any longer than it does.
yep! grey flannel, hugo boss 1995 , safari and drakkar ...This colognes are my favorites during my younger years teens 1987..Still using up to this days specially SAFARI i have 3 of them lol...
Wore Grey Flannel from 77 to 96. Divorce made me want a new scent. For the next 5 years I wore Chemistry/Eternity. Last Ten years brought me back around but so damn soapy now.
my beloved aramis was so back in the lisτ :( well i have most of the newer popular fragrances, and i have to say when i first sniffed aramis i started to laught..this thing is amazing..greetings from greece...
My old school were Sir Canada Cedar - got from my German grandfather (discontinued), Givenchy Pi and Boss #1, Hugo by Hugo Boss (original formulation) and then the original Acqua di Gio a girlfriend bought me. Ooo I forgot I have that vintage Paco Rabanne Poir Homme too and the Grey Flannel.
Interesting video, good selection I would have certainly added a classic Hermés non other than Bel Ami, came out in 1986. Also, for late nineties Jaipur Homme Boucheron 1998.
@@ThePerfumeGuy I literally picked up a bottle this evening for 10 bucks. I forgot how great it smelled. There's so much more going on with that scent than I remembered. I keep sniffing it as the night goes on. Thanks for your great content.
I was hoping to see Armani Eau Pour Homme on the list. A classic that my dad and many uncles had on the counter. Would sneak in to the cabinets to put that one on.
What a pleasure to watch this video. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I only wish some of these great fragrances smelled like they did back in the day. Polo and Drakkar are still my two favorites, but like most reformulations the current iterations smell like cheap clones.
I never liked Davidoff Coolwater but I loved Davidoff in the dark brown bottle and wore it often. I have always loved Eau Sauvage from Dior and wore it throughout my nursing career. Very enjoyable video - a trip down memory lane.
👋😃 Inspired by this one - How about a video featuring oakmoss in that green woody aromatic style Eau Sauvage? As a patch lover Givenchys Gentleman was a great discovery. Animale unfortunate not so mich - It reminds me more to Angel then A-Men.
There are a ton from the 1990's missed on this like, including CK1 and Tommy Hill, Hugo Boss 'Hugo', Armani 'Lei/He' (before the reformulation abomination), ext.
I’m still heartbroken. I finally got my hands on a bottle of Eau Sauvage, and I had, at least what I think was, an allergic reaction to it. (SMH) My skin turned red and swollen, slightly itchy. I was sooo bummed out. And now I’m all paranoid about putting anything on my skin. I’ve worn fragrances for about twenty years, and that was my first bad reaction. Horrible timing. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
This type of scents are the real niche, love them all and I'm just 30. Anyway, you said Zino has gone off, but it's not, that's an animalic note that is not listed on fragrantica. I think it's civet. P.S. Where is Quorum? :(
