This was a WONDERFUL lesson!! ❤ I have been working on the pinch pattern now for months...but I know I'm doing it wrong. I have to change my technique...You're really the ONLY person on here that does such a fine job of showing! It could do with a little bit more zoom in though...and I really didn't understand what you meant re:.fingering the chord? Don't play the 3 fingered G, only 1 finger? And don't that with every chord? What about like the F 4-fingered Barre, or B or F#m barre?
I learned those picking patters when I was 14 and I can still play with them today, even after forty years of ignoring the guitar. However, now I practice two hrs every day and I’m so happy that those picking patterns made it into my long term muscle memory. Small victory in the war to become better player. Thanks!
AS a late starter (65!) and a retired elementary teacher, I appreciate a well laid out scope and sequence. Thanks for your brilliant breakdown. Just what I was looking for.
Travis picking was the first thing I learned when I started playing guitar. That said, I learned it using the thumb and three fingers, so I had to adjust my picking for some songs by leaving out the third finger. "4+20", for instance, is played with only the thumb and two fingers, while ""Guinevere" uses three fingers and thumb. This video is well done and explains it very well. Thanks.
Great lesson, Jared. I taught myself the basic pinch pattern back in 1965 from listening to PP&M records and developed the rest on my own over the years. I've been asked to teach my style but I never really broke things down, I just play, often using a mixture of all 4 patterns and more, with variations, within the same chord progression. Your lesson is a great starting place that I will pass on to friends who want to learn Travis Picking. A few years ago I tried to teach myself Skruggs style 5-string banjo. At first the rolls drove me nuts because they have a very different rhythmic feel and are kind of backwards from guitar (55+ years of muscle memory will do that to you). Although I never finished learning banjo, I incorporated aspects of banjo rolls into my Travis Picking to great effect.
Same story for me - just a couple years later than you started. I vividly remember sitting in the open door way of my cabin playing the pattern over and over until it became natural. I don't remember another thing about church camp that year. The PP&M song that hooked me on folk style acoustic guitar was the Ballad of Spring Hill on the LP A Song Will Rise. Bob Dylan's Free Wheelin' album was also a huge inspiration.
Hey, Jared. I've been struggling for days to come up with a fingerpicking riff for a song I'm writing and this lesson was an epiphany. Thanks for helping me come back to the basics. I gotta keep telling myself: Keep it simple, stupid. This lesson really was a huge help. My new favorite--the 3rd, pinch pattern. I always love your videos. Don't know why I haven't subscribed, but I just did. Bless you, man!
My ultimate goal has been to play Fingerstyle guitar and to understand what I was doing beyond just memorizing songs so that I might be able to play any song I like with an appropriate Fingerstyle motif. I like all four patterns you've demonstrated in this video, favor the 2nd & 3rd patterns (pattern 3 minus that 8th note ~ the bounce). Thank for this lesson & the printed materials 👍🏾👍🏼🎯🤝🏼.
Thanks David! Glad you found this helpful. I have a few more fingerpicking lessons coming up over the new couple months too. I hope they all help with your ultimate goal. Cheers, -Jared
I like the idea and the way you teach reading music I want to your channel you’re a good teacher we need more people like you on RU-vid that are teachers and not showoffs I’ve been playing for many years since 1974 I’ve had my ups and downs with a guitar until I learn how to read music I am a finger style guitarist because I can’t sing so I play all the harmony and all the melody I guess my family thinks I’m a natural at it sometimes I don’t think so I still have troubles like every other guitarist music never ends always something new to learn thanks for your video you’re a beautiful teacher😁👍🏼😎🎸🎼🎶👍🏼
Jared, thanks for making this video. Your a great teacher. I've been playing guitar for 3 years and am still learning. This lesson will help give me more more to learn.
My favorite pattern was the 4th one. The reason is simple; it's the only one I didn't know. I knew the other 3 and constantly play 2 of them. So I have to start using #2 and add #4. Thanks for this. 😄
Fun fact, your video is in Griffpatch's Quick and Fun Scratch Tutorials! Its completely unrelated and I think it was an accident but its still a fun fact!
Been looking for something like this for a long time. Thank you! And to all you late starters. I agree with you. Great muscle memory picking (through hours of practice) with a few basic patterns (styles) will allow us to create great clear pleasing sound on the guitar, while exploring the notes and left hand positions experimentally. That is my theory anyway. I think next after this is to start exploring the various notes that work well together. And then the use of majors and minors to embody emotional and story changes.
Great lesson and as always you are great to follow and understand. This is really worth spending some time on the techniques, thanks for sharing Jared.
Jared!!! TY4 this vid! I just discovered u today & this is my 1st watched vid of yours! Even though I knew every guitar pickin way that you finger picked, I didn’t know it was called the 4 Travis or about arpeggio etc & I never learned how to read music yet but I play by ear with many chords (I can read the chords lol) but all dim deer black dots jist git in me way! Haha! I been in a slump lately & haven’t even played for a while now cuz of heavy stuff going on right now in my life…some how it seems that even something I luv so much playing & singing 🎸🎵🎙for Jesus✝️kinda got knocked out of me lately & deep down it’s a bummer! Cuz I’m the type of guitarist that plays every day but “grief” can do a number on ya eh? So ur video of finger pickin’ just popped up on my feed & I’m glad cuz you “almost” make me wanna cross the room, take the lonely Martin outta her case & finger pick till my half gone callouses bleed! Haha! Lost my dear hubby in a local hospital bed to cancer 56 days after being diagnosed💔so it’s been kinda hard to even breathe normal let alone play geetar ya know? Been going through heavy duty stuff with my daughter & 3 year old grandson too so now the grief is double!🥺But I know the Holy Ghost is trying to woo me back into using the gift Jesus bestowed upon me & if I did our gracious Heavenly Father would be so glad too! So thanks for the inspiring video bro! Keep on pickin’ & grinin’ 4 Jesus k? God bless! jayne in CT☃️❄️🍁☘️📖🙏✝️🕊🎸🎵
only 4 top finger picking styles...damnation since I know 10, I am truly blessed!! holy cow. Travis How long have you been picking? I have 70 years under my belt on guitar...and LEFTY besides!!!
Hi Jared. I’m going for the inside/outside today. I’m 72 years old so it really is never too old to learn. I never thought of just playing the necessary strings rather than the whole chord. What a good day. Thank you so much.
Great video Jared. I'm committed to keeping all 4 patterns part of my future. Previously I have just worked on Landslide, but want to do more finger picking now. Your analytical approach to music and music theory suit me perfectly. I just subscribed and look forward to more of your videos on all aspects of playing guitar.
@@goodyeoman4534 Yes I have been playing that one - I think I have that one is seared in to the brain and muscle memory now. I find the 4th pattern harder to remember so havent used it much yet - how about you?
@@mason87104 Yes, it's the first fingerpicking song I learned and I've mastered it. Tried Don't Think Twice, It's Alright first but that was too much too soon. Another good one to get in the repertoire is I Will Follow You Into The Dark - although that is more palm muting than fingerpicking tbh.
@@goodyeoman4534 I had forgot Dont Think Twice was finger picked, love the song so will be fun to work on that ... and hadnt realized what a cool band DCFC is so checking them out! Thanks GY!
@@soundguitar You may not know the joy you bring. My dad is a master guitar player/singer. I have avoided learning from him all my life and now he is in his last days. I am finally sitting down for lessons with him and your lessons are a supplement to his that allow me to get up to speed between sessions. (you have the same Travis style...his fingers are like a spider on the strings). It makes things better for both of us. He also enjoys listening to you play. Thanks again
Hi Jared thank you so much for the Travis picking lesson. Excellent tab so I don't get it wrong!! Also the slow version then normal speed to help me aim for the correct sound. Great lesson.
This is the video where things are finally starting to click for me. Thank you so much!!! And, the Chords with Color chart is an amazing tool for changing a chord that sounds like it just needs something. My fav(s) are the inside/outside and the outside/inside. Have yet to play with the last two. Subscribed. Thanks again.
Dear Jared, Would you kindly explain what you’re doing with the frat hand? I understand for G you’re putting only your third finger on the low E. How about for the c and D chord? Thank you. Glad I found your videos! Kazi
That's great learning in ur lesson about streaming n picking lesson, I been trying so badly, thanks, great learning, need some more lessons through slow pattren. From Indian R C Christian.
Still trying to wrap my head around everything about playing guitar as I am primarily a pianist. Guitar to me is a different world. A beautiful, wonderful, intriguing foreign world lol. Alas. Perhaps, someday.
