I’ll offer a controversial pick….Benedict Arnold, yes, as a leader of US troops & action. Many military scholars consider Arnold one of the most most effective field generals the US ever had. Put himself in harm’s way often. He led the Assault on Quebec, took Ft. Ticonderoga (so it’s cannons could be brought to Boston, for Washington’s siege there), led pivotal actions at Battle of Saratoga, Battle of Lake Champlain (Valcour Island), to name some! He often had to pay to equip & feed his troops. Yes, he turned traitor, but before that he gave his all to to revolution.

What do you think Robert E Lee was doing before served the " South " Lincoln wanted Lee to command the Union Armies. He said no that he did love America, but would not and could not raise his sword against Virginia. Grant knew Lee was better , Lee's tactics are still taught and used today by not just America but other countries as well.

MacArthur always seemed to get caught with his pants down. Too many battlefield blunders, too. He was a theatrical showboat prima donna, and so he's easily recognized. You really should distinguish between actual battlefield generals, and the more strategic upper eschelon brass. This is just a list of well-known popular guys.

Lee was neither a United States general nor was he a great General. He had no strategic vision outside of the Virginia theater, made two disastrous, losing invasions of the North and agreed to fight for a slave empire against the Constitution, in contradiction of his sacred oath. So, no to Lee. Emphatically.

There should have been a lot more generals on this list other then they had. and the one that personally bugs me is. Gen. George S. Patton isn't on that list. COME ON !!!, he should have been on that list. 1 or 2 of those last 2 generals shouldn't have been on that list. and one of those last generals was an ass kissing politician, and I am talking about Gen. Ike.. and Gen. Robert E. Lee should have been on that list. he was a Confederate general, but he was still an American, and he was a Colonel before the Civil War. and he was offered the command of the Union Army as a general at the start of the Civil War. but refused it because of loyalty to the state of Virginia. and be honest. could you bear arms against your own state if we went to war again....🤔🤨

I hate to be overly critical, but whoever but this together really has only a cursory knowledge of American military history. I hope those drawn to the site understand the information it presents is highly questionable and very arguable. If you’re interested in the subject matter do actual research and not rely on RU-vid.

Why does the narrator say "five" when there are only four? Also, "Dug-out" MacArthur did not command in the Pacific Theater; his area was the SouthWest Pacific Theater. Admiral Chester Nimitz was commander of the Pacific Theater. There are several other US Army generals who were almost as good as the first three and better than the last: Nathanial Greene, Winfield Scott, William T. Sherman, George H. Thomas, John J. Pershing, George C. Marshall, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, Matthew B. Ridgway, Norman Schwarzkopf.

Grant -and Sherman, both havig served as quatermasters, understood the importance of logistics. Both were capabloe strategists, but not good battlefield leaders-Kennesaw Mountain, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, e.g. Grant's strategy was one of simultaneous offensives so the Confederacy could not shift troops around.

The whole overland campaign was a failure for Grant and he lost all the major battles of that campaign. Sharman fared better and the taking of Atlanta was the reason Lincoln won his second term.

Winfield Scott not only was the general who led the US to victory in the Mexican War, he also developed the Anaconda Plan for defeat of the south in the Civil War, which eventually produced victory but if followed more closely would have saved countless Union lives. Eisenhower was certainly more of a glorified bureaucrat than a general, showing neither tactical brilliance nor strategic ability. Patton and Bradley were far more able military leaders.

@@auerstadt06When they refer to how many American soldiers died in the Civil War. they refer to both sides. both sides were American citizens. there were over six hundred thousand Americans who died in that war. that's both sides. and people criticize Gen. Robert E. Lee. oh, because he didn't want to bear arms against his own state of Virginia. can you do that if there was a war today. could you bear arms against your own state. and there was no punishment for Confederate soldiers. after the Civil War, some rejoined the Union Army. and some became American politicians. the same as they did before the Civil War. the Confederate soldiers were not considered traders in that time period. they were considered fellow American citizens.
