5500 trades blows with the 3600 that have been around $50-60 for well over a year. Not to poo poo on your deal but it’s not a crazy good price considering the performance it can give. It has half the L3 cache (16mb)as the standard 5600 (32mb) and up cpus and it only supports gen3. If you are on B550 or X570 already I would recommend keeping an eye out for a used 5700x or better deals that will net you double the cache and gen4 which will help if running direct storage games and or a 8x modern gpu like a 6600/4060. I just bought a $115 5700x not because I needed it over the 5600x but because I could push out a standard 5600 for $100 easily. If you just wait for a crazy used deal on a 5600x/5700x/5800x you can then sell your 5500 for max pricing around $80 and have very little out of pocket. It’s all about price, find a crazy good deal right around $100 for a proper 32mb version and then sell your 5500 for much of the cost of the upgrade. I just went from AM4 to AM5 for like $30-40 out of pocket.

Not gonna lie, I upgraded to a 7800x3d and it is kinda generally more unstable than the 13th gen intel I was on before. The intel CPUs tend to be more plug and play you don't really need to worry about downloading the chipset drivers and stuff, but its really really important for AMD CPUs. that and the 7800x3d seems to just be stuttier than the equivalent intel CPU even though the performance is higher, its weird. I heard people calling it the AMDIP. but its been noticable for me even after making sure everything is set up right, and sticking with 6000cl30 ram which is measured to be the best for the 1% lows. and turning off all the potiential issue causers like core memory isolation, and rebar and HAGs and stuff to test

@@Jelfish416thats cause youre right, it doesnt make any sense.. unless you were an impatient kid unable to save money or just somebody that was ignorant to how much performance you actually wanted. I completely regretted cheaping out with a 2600X when zen 2 was already out even and then eventually went to a 3700X then a 12700K. Since going 12700K around release, this is the longest ive gona without upgrading cause i really dont feel like i need a 14700K and wont need a zen 5 or 15th gen intel CPU. Its just not worth it and the 4070 Ti is more than enough at 1440p except some shit games that run like shit like Starfield or something. Im at a point now where i think you should just buy a decently buff rig and not pay attention to tech after and go touch grass. When you constantly buy cheaper parts that need to be replaced soon you put yourself in a spot where you pay wayyy too much attention to tech channels and stuff that make you wanna upgrade for meager ass performance increases or suck you into a weird ass corporate tribalism where you start basing your identity on a corporation that literally gives no fucks about you. Kinda avoid that by just every 3-5 years going “already whats actually good now and let me get something quality that works for me from the start and has decent legs”

The 5700X is truly an awesome budget part, but it's worth bearing in mind - it doesn't come with a box cooler, you'll need to get an extra cooler from somewhere. I use an AMD Wraith Prism, it's more than adequate but expensive - a Peerless Assassin is probably a good option :)

mine has a single tower Noctua cooler on it and it works an absolute treat, I don't think you'd need a big cooler like that. mind you I do live in quite a cool ambient temp (sometimes as low as 16C) so we'll see how bad it gets in the summer when the temp in my room goes up 10 degrees 😬

@TechTusiast
@TechTusiast 5 месяцев назад
If you have a good cooler like one from Noctua, you can keep using that from CPU gen to CPU gen. You can get required parts to fit old cooler to new socket quite cheap. While AMDs coolers are not terrible, I would still mostly not use them, but pretty much any tower cooler instead.

I run a Ryzen 5700X. Not least because of the 8/16 core being better than the 5600X 6/12 core, but mostly because it remains a 65W part. 5800X consumes 105W, an extra 40W for a few percent of extra speed. Power consumption is the most important factor for me, since I'm running on solar/battery.
@axescar
@axescar 6 месяцев назад
With modern CPU's and mobos TDP is not a problem - you can even choose 14900k and run it with 65w limitations. It's always price/performance matters, but according to your power budget. I have SFF with 5800x3d with 70w CPU limitation, that never limit any game I played, but allow my ears to be in safe :)
@Vantrakter
@Vantrakter 6 месяцев назад
TDP isn't power draw though, a 5600x isn't going to draw 65W vs 105W of an 5800X. What matters is actual power draw from the wall socket, not tdp

I made a single CPU purchase in 2023: a 5600 to replace a 1700 on an existing X370 board. It required a specific succession of chipset and BIOS updates, but it worked. Very nice performance boost. Why not a 5700X? For the role of the PC in question, six cores are plenty, I got an adequate cooler in the box, and the savings paid for a RAM upgrade as well. I got a 7900X for $350 _with_ 32 GB of ddr5 6000 ram included free. Actually I bought an extra 32GB as well (and yeah, "never buy unmatched ram"... but it was the same brand, lot, serial number, and they're all single-rank, so I was able to get them to play nice at their rated speed, your mileage may vary). Considering the 7950X was about $200 more, and the 7800X3D wasn't out yet (and initially was also $200 more), I'm quite happy with my pick. Also, the pc is "mixed use" and it's "4k"... so, budget multicore performance (for mixed use) and I have minimal cpu bottleneck concerns (cuz 4k puts the bottle on the gpu). All the experts were recommending a 5800X3D at the time (and it''s a great cpu), but one of the reasons I was building a new pc was because my previous build was stranded on the wrong side of a motherboard & ram platform change, so I wanted AM5 to forestall that eventuality on the new build. I'll probably swap it out eventually with a 8800 X3D or 9800X3D eventually (whenever AM5 is hitting it's end of life stage). AM5 engenders a LOT of new standards (pcie 4, many lanes, ddr5, and the cpu socket itself). Took a very different approach to gpu though. Wanted rock solid 4k performance with no if's/but's. So I went with a 4090. Considering it runs 4k "great" _without_ DLSS, _and_ I have DLSS to fall back on in the future... It seemed like a very long-term (albeit high cost) investment. I've undervolted it slightly, and made sure the plug is tighter than humanly possible, and the card's floating corner is well supported.

Always love these lists and find it very interesting how different the US market is compared to the austrian/german one where I buy from. You can get a Ryzen 3600 boxed for less than 80€ and a Ryzen 5600 for as little as 110€ over here, there is almost no reason to go with Intel, as the 5600 easily beats the 12100 and the 3600 easily beats the 10100. Back in 2020/2021 when I built my latest PC the 10400f was significantly cheaper than the Ryzen 3600 counterpart and that was a great choice for me, but things change and I dont think there is a single good Intel option right now that beats any AMD counterpart in price to performance, let alone power consumption and upgradability.

be careful about power consumption charts. Because while Intel has a higher Pmax, the idle is way more decent than Ryzen parts. So the final Wh really depends on the use case scenario.

I went from an i5 11400 to the 5800X3D earlier this year, and the jump in performance was insane. Yes I went from LGA1200 to AM4, but my case is a little different; mine's a mini ITX build, and parts are somewhat expensive. I would've had to spend hundreds of dollars more just to shift to AM5 with a R5 7600. I am killing future upgrade-ability by sticking to AM4 but my scope is also not that big, in the sense that my case is so small it can't physically accommodate a relatively large GPU. Currently I have a Reference RX 6800 in there which I bought second hand for around $350, and I'm going to have to wait a bit to replace it with something that is significantly faster for the same size and cost. By then AM5 will be cheaper with faster CPUs too. The fastest GPU that fits my case right now is the Founders 4070Ti, *if* I can find one, that is. But that's way too much money (almost 2.5x) for something that's less than 40% faster - not really a generational leap, imo. I'd need something that's atleast 2x as fast, which I don't think is happening until 2026 at the earliest.

@@JohnThunder ...Tell me one thing (honestly), in your favorite games and having the RTX 3060-12GB for now, how much did you gain in minimum/average/maximum fps when changing your 3600X for the 5800X3D...at 4K/60Hz. I can understand that you will buy the 5800X due to a great offer or temptation, but when it comes to a 4K display, perhaps it would have been enough for you to buy a more powerful GPU than the RTX 3060-12GB. That is, your change would make more sense if we were talking about 144/165Hz screens and beyond....And that's thinking that you were a player who needs "thousands-fps".

The platform is already rock solid. I push my 7950X3D to red-line every single day by compiling code in the background while I game. Typically see around constant 2.5GB/s on my 2x NVMe RAID0 when compiling and gaming at the same time. CPU util at 99.9% at all time for hours and hours on end.
@JohnThunder

@@juanmassiosare9850 Well 4k is not much of a difference in frames, but I can sometimes play games at 1080p and 1440p and that really makes a difference from the older CPU. The 5800x3D performs better overall in all tasks compared to the 3600x. I wanted to buy a new GPU but they are very expensive. I am saving money at the moment to get maybe a RTX 4070 Super next year. Also planning to buy a 1080p or 1440p display to have a dual display, better for live streaming and editing.

Really would have upgraded from 5800x to 5800x3d this year if the black friday sale was slightly better than just 30$ cheaper than the regular 320$ price... my reasoning is would have sold my 5800x for 170$, and would of had a solid 15% boost on avg in most games i play and 33% boost in my most active game rust based off facepunches own benchmarks.

Yeah I feel like the price of the 5800X3D is just a little too high for people on Zen 2 and up at this point. You can sell the AM4 setup as an upgrade kit and be on AM5 for the price of a 5800X3D.

I dont think 7700x is to consider buying, before you check your market. Here in EU 7800x3D is going roughly at 10% more, when its delivers 20-30% more gaming power. If you got enough money to buy 7700X, 10% more at cpu when getting 30% more performance is a good trade imo.

Thats only 30eur (10%) price diff. If we use 7700 compared to 7800x3d its 8390czk (342eur) vs 9390czk (384eur). Thats still only 40 eur diff for so much bigger gains. Had a horrible experience with an MSI X670e Tomahawk. the motherboard wouldn't let the PC come out of sleep, restart, or enable expo, and it randomly crashed in games with 3 different sets of RAM (all of which were running stock, and work great in my other PC with expo on) and a couple deferent PSU's. I bought a Gigabyte board to replace it, and there have been 4-5 bios updates for Gigabyte in the amount of time it took for MSI to release 1 beta branch of their bios. Bought the MSI board thinking that I'd save money, but I'm out the $260 in the end.

Smart choice. The cheapest way to get on AM5. You might barely have been able to coble together a here-and-now-better solution with AM4 parts, but then you'd have to pay through the nose later to upgrade. Zen 5 is on the roadmap for "Q2 2024" so June 30th at the latest, but knowing AMD's track record with staying on schedule (take a hint Intel!) that probably means announcement in April and rollout in May... so in 5-6 months "something" is going to start pushing down the prices of 7800X3D, and in a year you'll be able to pick it up for cheap.
