Have been to Dettifoss! it is amazing, a place that at first sight may be a "bit scary" , so majestic that provokes strong emotions! It feels like being on another planet!! Anyway the entire island is magical!

Are there any camera stores where digital camera gear (DSLR; Rangefinder or "Bridge") can be rented? Photo equipment adds extra weight to airline luggage restrictions.
It's really hard to say which would be better; from the East, it's a pretty rough road but you can get really close; from the West, it's easier and there is a viewing platform. It's up to you! 🥰
