A few weeks ago I stood in front of a 400 years old oak, half of it was blown out from a lightning strike, but it still lives and it grows. It may sound funny, but I felt like standing before a majesty, like I had to bow, give a gift or something. I had goosebumps all over. These old, big trees have seen so much, survived so much...I feel humbled in front of them

Not funny at all. Same feeling when we see a clear star filled sky, look down into the Grand Canyon, or contemplate the true depths of the ocean. Civilization buffers us from this experience and distracts us from the gut feeling and logical conclusion.

Trees are just as much alive as you and I are. You don't notice the tree doing much because its movements are really slow. if you were to watch a tree in a time lapse of 100 years or so you would see that it has very intentional movements

Glad you have those wonderful memories . I am so worried for the gorgeous ancient trees in California because of all the wildfires they get . I wonder if when they're not getting much rain and are in drought if they have airplanes that drop water over the trees over and over again to keep them moist but I would imagine they don't have a preventive program like that .

We live just outside the entrance to Sequoia National Park. Sadly it’s burning because of an electrical storm and Forest mismanagement. The Yokut Indians used to burn this area regularly, but the Park and Forest Service stopped that 80-100 years ago. We’ve been under a Mandatory Evacuation order for over three weeks. I kept Sequoia and Kings Canyon trash free for 23 years.

I've been to a Redwoods park in California. I'll never forget how ghostly quite it was in there. No noise of birds chirping, or bugs buzzing around, no wind, almost no sound whatever. The grove is so well shaded few plants can grow which would offer food & shelter for animals.

When I went to Sequoia National Forest I absolutely tripped out. The entire forest has these trees growing in it. It's like a prehistoric fairy tale forest. I got out and hiked to different big trees and you can even walk inside them. Don't lean against these trees to take pictures or whatever reason. I learned the hard way they are covered in these tiny spines that will make you itch severely. I did read later that they were covered in these little needles. Everywhere my body touched was itching for days.

Not sure what makes us feel so awestruck when seeing these trees. But I feel the same way as others. That you almost feel you need to bow to their greatness. To all they have been witnesses to in the world. And that they are a super being of this world. For me personally, I feel more connected to mother nature. To the planet. Size of the tree is determined by its general diameter and height of the trunk. tallest is determined by height and leaf altitude. eldest is determined by how settled the tree is and how large the roots are as trees grow continously with large roots.

You actually think we make paper out of old growth trees? Lol!! I guess you don't know anything about pulpwood trees (trees used for paper production). Or the fact that they are a planted crop. If you use less paper, the farmers plant fewer pulpwood trees. Using less paper in order to "save trees" is the same as eating less corn to "save corn plants". It is stupid, and accomplishes nothing whatsoever.
