The Legend of Lizzie Borden, a 1975 ABC film based on the case. Lizzie was played by Elizabeth Montgomery. Elizabeth Montgomery and Lizzie Borden were sixth cousins once removed, both descending from 17th-century Massachusetts resident John Luther. Rhonda McClure, the genealogist who documented the Montgomery-Borden connection, said, "I wonder how Elizabeth would have felt if she knew she was playing her own cousin." One of the gowns worn by Montgomery in the film is on display at the bed-and-breakfast that now occupies the Borden house.

I researched this in college, actually reading the newspapers on microfilm at the local library. What was fascinating was Emma Borden's demeanor. During the pre-trial hearing and the hearing itself, she stated that she had no remorse and still held unforgiveness in her heart towards her father. It was also determined that while she claimed to be out of town visiting friends, those friends did *not* corroborate her claim. Also, her rain slicker (and wellies, I think) were missing from the home, while LIzzie's remained in the house. My thought was / is that Lizzie did *not* kill her parents but her sister, Emma, did. Lizzie was covering for her. I read a book a number of years later that came to the same conclusion. The author stated that he had visited Emma's home and "found a secret passage" that led to a field far removed from the home. Apparently, according to testimony, Emma started to go insane later in life fearing that people would figure out what really happened.

one of the more interesting things I ever heard in reference to the crime scene being hopelessly compromised was fall River historical society curator Michael Martins, when he mentioned, that in the town at that time, if someone noticed something looking out of place or incriminating, they would have taken it away, because, at that time, thats how things worked in Fall River, which is another aspect about the case, was how strongly the citizens defended Lizzie, until the trial was safely over, Lizzie was aquitted and the reporters left, she was rather brutally shunned.

Christina Ricci's portrayal of Borden was a riot.
@Tonithenightowl
@Tonithenightowl 7 лет назад
In the movie, it was alluded Lizzy did the murders in the nude, no chance of blood stains. While they didn't have forensic science as we do today, her alibi was still weak. She was known to shoplift but it was understood the bill went to Mr. Borden rather than the police being called. A shoplifter does not a murderer make but obviously she was "acting out". This is speculated as a possible incestuous relationship between she and her father. She was also rumored to be a lesbian. Maybe the truth of the matter is she wasn't willing to wait to inherit her father's money. She was tired of living under his thumb. I don't think she "snapped" but I do think she planned it. She no doubt banked on hiding behind her "skirt" and it worked.
@bobfrombrisbane1831
@bobfrombrisbane1831 7 лет назад
Tonithenightowl this was a topic on one of the radio stations here in Brisbane. A lady, sorry can't remember her name studied and researched this case. How she came to be interested in this case was odd. She said Lizzie came to her in dreams saying my father has a lot to answer to. She ended up researching this case for years ending up writing a book. Even went over and visited the house staying in Lizzies Bedroom. Her conclusion was that Lizzie did do the killings or at the very least organised the deaths.
@Tonithenightowl
@Tonithenightowl 7 лет назад
Bob from Brisbane So you're saying she didn't know about Lizzie before this dream? Bc that would be odd. It's a fairly well known story in the States, movies made, documentaries, the famous little jingle etc.plus as you mentioned the B & B and of course the paranormal shows have featured it many times. Just saying she may have heard about it somewhere. I think Lizzie did it all by herself. You know the old adage about secrets... if two people know it's not a secret anymore. It would have been too risky. I think the element of surprise ( even the maid upstairs in her room heard nothing) was the fact the victims were taken off guard.This was no stranger, this was someone they knew. Plus the doors were kept locked even during the day. Odd habit considering they didn't live in the lap of luxury or kept their money in the house. Not sure why Mr.B was so paranoid I think the reason mentioned was he was not well liked, made his share of enemies. I do think she chose that day bc her sister was off visiting relatives and the maid after washing windows on a hot morning felt faint and needed to rest. The timing was right. Lizzie had the motive, opportunity and a weak alibi. You need a damn good lawyer when you're guilty and she could afford the best. She bought her defense and it was well worth the money. As to why she did it? I don't think it was only about money but something much darker so maybe the lady who heard from her was right.:o)

Although Lizzie was found not guilty and walked, the public always assumed she did it. There's a story that, years after the murders, a delivery man once brought a large wooden crate to Lizzie's house. When he couldn't get it open, Lizzie said she would go and fetch a hatchet to help. The guy ran from the house as fast as he could!

Im related to Lizzie Through Her Mothers Side, Not sure who. But I've stayed in the house Many times as a true Borden, And yeah, Lizzie 100% did it, As a woman in 1892 she got away with murder as was described, But i also beleive lizzie plotted one Murder (Abbeys) but committed two, I know She loved her father but she still killed him, Im sure she felt remorse for her Crimes, Emma probs found out and left Maplecroft (The house they bought in 1893) And never talked to her because of it Either way, Lizzie was requested as "Being buried at my fathers feet" The act of a devoted daughter but petulant Murderess

Mr. Borden was so stingy he apparently made everyone eat old, rotten mutton (an old sheep) for days in the summer (no refrigeration!) until everyone in the house had food poisoning. He also loved forcing everyone to consume moldy bread, rotted fruit and worked their one serving girl almost to death! There were many people who hated him, and the number of axe blows certainly testify to an intense hatred! No one keeps on hacking at someone over and over unless it's personal. I always had a theory that the local butcher killed them for Lizzie. A butcher would be one of the few men the women would see on a regular basis and be allowed to converse with, and the blood issue wouldn't have been noticed since old time butchers were always soaking in it! They also delivered meats.

Lizzie & her sister had a huge family row the week before the murders because Andrew gave money & a house to Abby's half sister. Both sisters moved out for a few days after the row & Lizzie told friends they were not eating with Andrew & Abby any more & were staying in their rooms all day when they returned. Lizzie was known to steal from local stores & shopkeepers turned a blind eye & charged it to Andrews account. The daughters inherited what would be $4million each in today's money. 5years later Lizzie was accused of stealing 2 miniature paintings from a store in Providence. The matter was settled out of Court. Stealing can be linked to anxiety, trauma, OCD & various mental illnesses . The thrill of getting away with it fills an emotional void. Abby had her jewellery stolen the year before the murders. The only suspect was Lizzie. Andrew then installed locks on all the internal doors.

As someone who has served jury duty...the judge will say that you can't find the defendant guilty without a reasonable doubt. Even in 2018, Lizzie could've been found not guilty just by simple lack of evidence. Her saving grace was that it was 1892 and not 2018...technology and forensics is far more advanced now and she would've had a lot more harder time being found not guilty...but it's really all based on how strategic she would've been in today's world and the evidence (or lack there of) that would've been left behind.

The obvious question, if we accept that Lizzie didn't do it, is: then, who did? Other than the maid, there was no one there, unless we start contemplating the notion that the alibi of either sister Emma or of John Morse is false. BTW, contrary to the movie scene shown here, the fact that Lizzie had attempted to buy prussic acid the day before the murders was excluded as evidence from her trial.

Back in 1892 especially in Fall River Massachusetts they hated Irish. It was mainly Portuguese and catholic

Easy to forget that the Irish suffered massive discrimination because they're white and so many Americans are NOW descended from them.
@EVO6-
@EVO6- 7 лет назад
+screenwriterjohn the Irish people were originally discriminated against because of the fact that many diseases were carried over from the coffin ships that people emigrated via during the famine. no idea where you're getting this 'because they were white' thing, at all.

EVO6reviews Anti-Irish sentiments go back before the Potato Famine. The Irish were drunk and belligerent and uneducated. Also largely Catholic. Americans hated the Irish immigrants for a number of reasons.
@notpulverman9660
@notpulverman9660 7 лет назад
Anti-Irish sentiments stem from England, and the USA's Anglo-centric roots. The English treated the Irish like the Germans treated the Polaks or something.... or worse, actually.

The similarities between Lizzie's case and OJ's case are creepy. (e.g. short jury deliberations; public opinion was prominent re: political issues (gender/celebrity/race); mishandling of evidence at the crime scene; received not guilty verdicts by juries; becoming social pariahs after the verdict; a past case had a strong influence on their cases (Bathsheba Spooner/Rodney King... etc.)

Actually the Lizzie was proven to be in the barn, there was pears on the floor in her loft. What doesn't make sense is the night before the uncle showed up and everyone got sick but him from what I know then he left the next day. He could've done it! And the maid could've I guess two. No one knows

Well, technically she was never proven guilty and never confessed. Also, side note, they made a FUCKING MUSICAL about this case!! It's a rock opera called "Lizzie", and the titular character is a lesbian (something historians actually suspect she was in real life) having a relationship with a girl nearby. It's quite good!

Today with crime scenes there would be no one walking on it. And a woman would be taken to jail and told to strip down naked. She would be looked at by a woman. With. The technologies to day they would fine enough evidence to prove she was guilty. I do believe that she did do it too.
@johndoe-wv3nu
@johndoe-wv3nu 5 лет назад
That's the main issue with this case. The investigation was screwed up. Lizzie was the only suspect they actually investigated. A person in shock and on drugs. Yet she was still acquitted. Had they done a proper investigation I think they would have had more suspects. Sorry if I planned a murder I certainly wouldn't leave myself as suspect #1. I have a hard time believing Lizzie did it.
