First of all, congrats on the SAA cert, and best of luck for the upcoming ones! Thanks for the great videos, iLyas! Wanted to pick the brain of a SME. I'm in the U.S. military with 8 years working with satellites and a couple years of Cybersecurity experience more in a less technical, managerial aspect. I'll be out in a couple years and want to work at a tech job with great perks, benefits and culture. Currently have a security clearance, Sec+, CEH, SSCP, Bachelor's in Information Systems Security and will wrap up my master's in Cybersecurity Studies next year. But don't have much firsthand technical hands on keyboard experience. If it's worth noting, I have baseline exposure (mostly academic or military training) to Kali Linux, Microsoft OS, Bash, C++, Python, Powershell, digital forensics and did a year of project management but with no PMP unfortunately. Also have participated in CTF events, but not the competitions. The path I'm thinking of taking is getting AWS cloud practitioner this year and maybe solutions architect or security next year. Get a mid level job at Amazon or something like it to get my foot in the door at a FAANG-like company and pivot to higher paying roles a year or so in. Ideally, I'd get out of the military making no less than $100K, and $150K five years from then. Is this feasible? How would you approach this or what insight could you offer on the training/skills I should pursue to realize my timeline? Grateful for your time and wisdom! Shon
@WinTheCloud
@WinTheCloud 2 года назад
Hey Shon, thanks a lot for your support. Your plan sounds very achievable so let me push you to aim higher: Get the Cloud practitioner and the SA Associate this year. Given your expertise, I would suggest you specialize in either Security or IoT, both of which are in high demand today and will only continue to be more important as we transition to having more and more smart devices (cars, homes, wearables...) Security and IoT go hand in hand (all these devices need a way to authenticate, authorize, encrypt transferred data ....) And next year you can go for a specialty cert like the AWS Security Specialty. Give this video a watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--eRfvkfCY0Y.html and let me know if you have other questions

with your background and your eagerness to get into cybersecurity and to add in conjunction of iLyas response, you really should look into obtaining the CCNP (not just the CCNA). Your military background would be a great asset. The government has a number of cybersecurity initiatives you should look into, check CISA to start. (just my two cents).
@Native_love

If I were you I'd get an AWS cloud cert. You don't really need anymore programming experience. You should aim for at least $110-125K a year to start and with your security clearance and experience the sky is the limit! Put yourself on Linkedin and the recruiters will be calling you non-stop! ;-)

Hi Mustafa, thank you for the question. This is a tough one as there is no standard path to becoming an SA: some people have a background in networking, others in software development, while others have a lot more experience in customer-facing roles. But one this is sure, becoming a successful SA requires both hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge of various systems and components. I suggest you start with the Cloud Practitioner Certification to validate your knowledge of cloud fundamentals. You will have a better idea on which path to pursue next: Security Cloud Architect, Data Architect, Systems Architect, Entreprise Architect....

well what about those people who are transitioning from a different industry into the cloud space? I'm in an AWS RE/start program. We are prepping for the Cloud Practitioner exam at the end of this month. We've been going at it since September. It's a 3-month program. Obviously, it doesn't take 3 months to prep for that cert, but they wanted to cover foundation IT stuff as well, so it's design for new people with no IT background. I've enjoyed this journey, and I'm aiming for cloud engineering. I already purchased Adrian Cantrill's training course for Solutions Architect and Developer's associates.

Pratik, thank you for the question. I will be blunt, do I think Blockchain will replace the cloud? I hope the people who wrote this were joking... All the blockchain offers is Storage, it's a mean to store data on an immutable ledger. @WinTheCloud
@WinTheCloud Год назад
Thanks brother! I want to say that the era of conventional degrees as a primary weapon in the job search is probably beyond us. I personally used to hire people based on their interview performance. Well, not entirely, but their interview performance used to play a significant role in the hiring decision... Not anymore. The interview process stopped being super relevant to me as well somewhere along the way. Nowadays, I would only meet you in an "interview" to gauge how well we'll get along, and how well you'll be a good fit with the team/culture. I would look at your resume for experiences, at your GitHub/GitLab for tech skills, at your Behance, dribble - or whatever platform cool kids use these days - for artistic and design prouesse... I would even go through your Twitter feed to try and grasp what things that move your needle, how you approach problems, how you interpret news and deal with constant change. Do you maintain a blog or create content? That's even better, and you bet I will be reading as much as I can of your content as well. Certifications also show that someone has gone above and beyond, usually in their free time, to learn, prepare and pass an exam. Now, if that doesn't show commitment and grit, I don't know what does.

@WinTheCloud 2 года назад
Hey Pongohawaii, thank you fr your support and I'm sorry I'm just getting to your comment right now. So I actually don't have much experience in Salesforce products, so I can't speak about your first questions. Now for 2: This is a question I'm still trying to figure out myself ^^ but I would say working as an SA is about bringing putting your technical and problem solving skills in favour of solving business problems, so you can specialize in a specific domain (Security SA, AI/ML SA, IoT SA...), you can also join a company as a CTO, CISO... which is something a lot of SAs end up doing btw, but realistically, after a few years being an SA, you've built experience, knowledge and contacts in various fields, so it's up to you what to do next For 3: I think the big players are already established, even Google with all its might have realized how hard it was to compete with AWS in the cloud and set out to compete somewhere else (spoiler alert: k8s) there is actually a good documentary on the matter: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BE77h7dmoQU.html

How do you say one can build a portfolio for a SA?
@WinTheCloud
@WinTheCloud 2 года назад
Great question. Becoming a successful SA requires both hands on experience, and theoretical knowledge of various systems and components. As such, a blog where you dissect architecture patterns and discuss them in details can be a great addition to your portfolio, maybe a Github repo where you implement some of these patterns as well? Maybe contributions to open source projects?... I will think more about this question in the upcoming days and I'll make a video about it going in details

$100,000-$150,000 is nothing these days. Just a comfortable salary to live on. That salary was impressive 10 years ago. Now 100k feels like 60k in many areas especially if you are living in major cities. Sadly these roles like Software engineering are LOWERING salaries because more and more people are qualified and it's a race to the bottom as people are accepting lower offers just to not be unemployed. We already saw this in the 2000's with consulting, project management, the 2010's with product management now the 2020's with UX, software engineering, cloud.

Sure, if you want to treat your programmers as "programmers" then that's all they'll do: write code and send it to someone else to deal with. But it's better to treat them as Solution Engineers, and have them think about the code, but also the infrastructure on which their code runs, the required monitoring, the scaling, the security...
