So this is obviously a hugely controversial topic that is raging in our society today. In one camp you have the Pro College side that basically thinks that going to college is the key to success and everyone should do it if they want to be successful. In the other camp (very common here on youtube), you have the side that thinks college is a giant scam and we're all falling for it.
Everyone's situation is different and you should make the decision on whether or not to go to college based on your unique situation
Now in MOST situations, you should NOT go to college if you're passionate about a field where there's not much money. You would be way better off just working in the field, maybe spend your time becoming an influencer in that field or something like that. That experience would be WAY better for you.
Compare that to 4 years of going to college and then you finally get a degree and you've forgotten most of what you learned. You're also probably $40k in debt and can't find a job
The thing is, anything worth building takes TIME, rarely do people ever become overnight successes and even when it does happen you end up finding out later on that they worked for YEARS learning how to perfect their craft before they "blew up overnight"
Years of working in the dark with no pay, no recognition and no influence
Just grinding away and mastering their craft
Then they "blew up", if they hadn't spent all of that time they never would have blown up
This is why I really think the safe bet is to get a safe, stable career and then use that as stable ground to launch off of. Have stability and then chase your passion on the side. It will probably take years to take off so you will need that stability in order to launch
Pay: This one is obvious, if everyone is making $30k a year its obvious that society doesn't value the job enough to pay well. Whether this is right or wrong (teachers being an example, they should definitely be paid more), it is what it is and you need to recognize and accept this. Choose a field that pays at least (on average) $60k+ a year, preferably $80k a year. This does vary depending on how expensive the place you live is of course
Job Satisfaction Ratings:
This one is so important. I see SO MANY people wanting to become doctors, its crazy. I tell them to look into the job satisfaction rating for MDs and its HORRIBLE. MDs are depressed and miserable with their jobs to the point where many switch careers or even end it... Very sad to see. Even though they're making really good money, they get a lot of respect from people in society etc etc it's just crazy and the reason for this is all of the red tape and regulations as well as the huge amount of pressure working those long hours in the stressed environment. Everyone seems to be completely unaware of this and they want to be doctors for some reason and it blows my mind. There are better careers in the medical field to get into in my opinion that have all of the perks without the downsides but thats a topic for another video
Demand:
A general rule of thumb is to not go into a field that's dying or has no demand. This is just a recipe for disaster. You will be fighting other people for job openings, won't be able to find a good job in a desirable location, will have to accept lower pay, worse benefits, being treated badly because they could easily replace you, etc etc etc... It's just not a good move to make

Word of advice to new college students looking to go into stem..... The sad truth is that there is always going to be someone out there with a higher GPA and or more experience. You might say right now “Im gonna do CS” and or engineering etc......but you should go into college with a much more open mind, i promise you, your interests are subject to change once you start taking intro classes and major classes. Engineering and CS has a 60%+ drop out rate for a reason and you need to find a way to make yourself special and the time to do it is immediately once you enter college. Its too late after your junior/senior year to make yourself look amazing, you wont stand out more than the next guy/girl. Just always think ahead of your classmates, and also consider that your classmates are your competition once you hit the workforce. Lastly, i just graduated from Penn State with an engineering degree and let me just say, data sciences and analytics is becoming an extremely hot field with high pay. But its hard and youd have to enjoy it, on my list of best degrees, thatd take #1. Good luck to all.

I think the most overrated advices to college students is “pursue a degree in something you like.” Instead, we should tell all college students to “pursue something you’re good at, and you can use the income you made from your degree to do something you like.” If you like art, and you are really good at graphic design, don’t major in Art, major in Graphic Design instead because it’s more lucrative. Let’s face it, the thing we like to do isn’t always going to generate income! If you like Art, and you pursued a degree in Art, you might not even make enough money to sustain your own passion in Art!

So for forty years, you're in a job specifically for money. If you're willing to sacrifice happiness for money then have fun chasing money. If you followed that path then you'll be taking anti depressants by age 30. Now I never said just to follow your passions and cast all common sense to the side. It's quite important to figure what kind of life you want to live. Making money is extremely important and should be considered when choosing your career, but it shouldn't be the primary thought. When I picked my career it was out of interest towards the subject, I did my research and understood that if I played my cards right I could make a large amount of money. There's many people in my profession that went into it because of the wealth and unfortunately for them, it hasn't worked out.

@@daniesedits6929 Better to do accounting. Because some HR positions require working in payroll, and throughout your accounting degree, you still learn a lot about organization behaviour, employment laws and such. But the main problem with HR is that if you major in it, you can hardly do anything else. While if your major in different degrees, you can work in jobs that require that degree and HR if you like.

Great tip! For my case, I worked full time in the company and as a part time teacher previously. So it is beneficial to have more skillsets. Whether soft or hard skills, and always stay competitive and upgrade yourself. If one day you were not doing what you are doing. And plan on a career switch. It would be much easier as you have something to fall back on. One would also learn more skills and be more self disciplined as handling more school work or jobs has more responsibilities as well. So while one can have a main career path, it's good to diversify as well like what you have stated. And also to be able to know everything about something, and something about everything

@JBT97
@JBT97 3 года назад
@@dabsbass7687 I like to think of it as pick 2 out of the 3: be good at it, like doing it, and making a lot of money from it. Pretty much everyone who isn't loaded already will have to pick money for one of the two. You can be good at anything, really, if you dedicate the time for it, even if it seems hard(e.g. learning a language is possible at any age as long as you try). And you don't have to be perfect, just good enough to get a paycheck. As for liking it, you don't have to have a passionate boner for your job. You can relieve yourself in your free time (do what you like outside of work, untied to a paycheck). . . .but ofc, if you can get paid a lot to bust a nut, that would be quite a privilege. As for the imposter syndrome you're feeling, no one knows everything at first. That's what school is for--to learn. Take a class that you think is super hard, and if you retake it, it'll be a breeze. And if you see someone who does know everything, know that their progress isn't yours. Focus on yourself, as that's the only thing that should be important to you.

Fucking preach it! Success in the arts depends on your creative capacity and hard work first and foremost, but everyone that pursues and sees through art education already has those two factors in check (Some more than others, but all definitely have enough to get by in their field). Now, the other, more important factor left then is your connection and prestige, and to build up both of those you need to attend top Universities for your particular field. If you can get all these factors in check and keep on pursuing your passion, success is bound to materialise and follow.

blaise robert yes - I was thinking you can’t really learn acting from a coach - it takes practice, and theater majors get that practice acting in front of an audience and seeing how the production of a play works from start to finish. Your code either works or it doesnt meaning if you work hours on a project and it still doesnt work... it doesnt work Finally finding something you actually would like to code every day can be hard to find i personally cant see myself waking up every day trying to solve issues on a A.I. system built my some other guy who didnt explain his code. Same, I also have an offer with an amazing aerospace company with an Electro-Mechanical engineering degree. I don't know what Shane is on, but personally I think mechanical engineering is much, much more lucrative and applicable than he thinks it is. Engineering degrees are so valuable, there are so many different paths you can take with an engineering degree, and mechanical engineers are always in demand. I don't think Shane quite grasps how valuable a mechanical engineering degree is, especially when mechanical engineers understand electronics and electrical engineering.

I hear that. I became a mechanical engineering major because I wanted the ability to have a major that’s more wide ranged. I'm not trying to imply that you made a wrong choice (if you love it, pursue the field!), but I do think it is important to point out that the demand for pharmacists (in the US) has drastically decreased over the past few years to the point where the field is considered to be oversaturated. If you do a little research on r/pharmacy, SDN, or even google "pharmacist demand" you will see more evidence about what I'm talking about. In addition, working conditions for retail pharmacy can be pretty poor (NY Times published an article about the working conditions in retail pharmacy and a lot of pharmacists in the comments have been confirming their experiences). I don't necessarily want to scare or discourage you pursuing from the field, but as a fellow pharmacist, I think it's important that all pharmacy students be at least aware about this stuff.

Bro... I've just been in the biggest dilemma of my life with this choice of career thing. I'm currently in the process of transferring to a 4-year, but I don't know what the hell to do. In community college, I was a Business Administration major at first because I wanted to learn about business. Took classes and all and then I thought, "Well if I open a business, what would it be on?" So I started looking into the next big things and stuff like technology and science. I realized that I don't know shit about math or science so I decided to switch my major to engineering because it was a major that had various classes to take so I could know what field to finally set off into (like either electrical engineering, physics, computer science, math, chemistry, etc.) After two years, I was just so overwhelmed with the amount of work in STEM. I could not take the workload in such a short amount of time. It was too stressful and alienating. I had no time for anything. And deadlines really took the fun out of math for me. I believe school is great for disciplining yourself as professionally as possible, but this shit was just weighing me down. After realizing that I spent 6 years in community college, I said FUCK IT! and finished my Business Major and graduated with that because I still had another year and a half of STEM classes. I'm 27 now and barely about to transfer. I have been a Math Tutor for 4 years now and find myself liking math a little more every time I tutor some students. And after some time off from school, while waiting to transfer, I've been with people that just have no mathematical sense and found myself forgetting a lot of math stuff. I felt so dumb and just not up to par with the standards of the digital age. I am passionate about MATH and BUSINESS but I believe you can only be a master of one thing. I want to go to school for business to learn how to do business because I have no experience and I've learned that I take more action for school-related things as opposed to applying the philosophies of self-development/business books every day. I want to go to school for MATHEMATICS also because I believe that I would have a better understanding of the universe around me and develop the left side of my brain more. I've done all the shit: PROS/CONS lists and everything and I just can't seem to know what to pursue. I know that I COULD pursue both majors but end up in hella debt. To anyone here, I'm just asking for some method to help me out. Or if you were in this situation, what would you do? Because I have no idea wtf to do. I just feel like I'll miss out on the beautiful things I could learn from advanced math if I choose business. And I feel like I'll never have that business I want or be that entrepreneur because of the time and dedication to learn and teach math.

Mathematics is in demand but really only in certain fields. Teaching is mostly a dead end although it is definitely needed. I'm putting in my last few years as a maths tutor and can say point blank don't teach maths unless you have a vocational love for it. School districts will almost always walk all over you and the only reason I took on tutoring is that I didn't want to build back a client base as a CPA or work corporate hours again. I make good money but it's a hustle and no matter WHERE you go people skills and friendships are key. If you stink at public speaking or have social anxiety you need to develop coping strategies or your career prospects will stall without a way to advance if you need more money later on.

For those who are thinking of majoring in computer science or related tech fields, one area you might want to specialize is Cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is one of the most talked about jobs across the world not only in the US. There are hundreds of thousands of jobs out there in the US alone and most of them are unfilled and companies cannot find qualified workers no matter how hard they try. They say you have 0% unemployment rate after graduating in cybersecurity degree.

#2, Healthcare is a great industry to get into because it exists nationwide and because 10 years ago during the recession, two types of workers rode the financial crisis wave out really well...Fed Govt employees and Healthcare workers. If you combined it with #1 for a health IT career , you are golden.

Hi Shane. Thank you for this video. I am in a weird place right now. I've been unemployed since March due to the pandemic and the statewide lockdown as well as my own health issues. It took forever for me to finish my degrees and certificates and because of how my life turned out I feel it was a waste of time. I am definitely ready to pivot to something else. I have enrolled in a career exploration class at a local community college to help me find a new path. I was originally a graphic design major but became frustrated because I couldn't find a steady full-time job that paid well. I switched to fine art in order to be able to do my own work but haven't been very successful financially. I've been told that graphic designers make between $30,000.00 and $100,000.00 a year. I've also learned that if I have my work licensed I can have a steady stream of income from the use of my art. I only mention all this because art and design didn't make the top 5 list. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Girl, take a moment to think about your math teacher. 90% of the time, you don't suck at math, it's your shitty teacher. Do you have a good teacher? If not, self teaching is easier than one might think. I have a few tips: Of course you've heard that you should practice a lot, but remember to practice in a circle manner. Like, do radians then do trig then do variation then do radians again. -Have a notebook where you write down how to do each type of math, just once in a clear way. -When you do silly mistakes, just write a little note next to your mistake. This works, idk how. -don't try to actively memorise formulas, just practice a lot. You'll remember them. -Have a sheet of paper glued to your desk, filled with formulas. Look at it everytime you do math. -Read your math textbook like you'd read any other textbook. The examples the little text bubbles are all really helpful. -girl, no one sucks at math. -you can do this

Ryan honestly do what you’re most passionate about. Law schools don’t care what you major in, so long as you have good grades and get a good score on the LSAT. I decided to double major because I had a lot of English credits in high school, so I will be able to finish the double major quicker than usual.

5:30 - yeah, my dad is one of those who got his degree in design engineering and math or something. He loved his job b4 he retired. I'm so glad my dad had a real, *REAL* good paying job lol! Sad thing. He was discriminated against a long time ago. Just because he was black, he had to take a trignomomatry test over AGAIN just because his white teacher couldn't believe he did better than his whole class (who was caucasian). After he took the test AGAIN he ended up doing better than his 1st test! He told me that story more than once. I wish I knew that racist guy so I could tell him a thing or two.
