I think you did a phenomenal job with your video and the live chat premiere was some of the most fun I've had on YT 😁! Thanks so much for including me in that wonderful roundup! Great picks for sure. I got introduced to Dark Horse reading the reprints of Conan by Gotham Comics here in India. Over time I discovered their other works. They have done a lot of Star Wars, and game tie-ins, adaptations true. And for a time Dark Horse best works for me was Mingolaverse but digging deep I found some great titles and MIND MGMT was one of them. It's difficult to make a list cause DH has done such diverse, weird indie stuff added with the mainstream adaptations and tie-ins. The caveats make sense. Ngl I was surprised to see an Indian making such a thorough video on comics about Dark Horse. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Good work.

Dark Horse published several excellent books and series throughout the years so it might be a bit unfair to reduce it to a few titles. Having said that I would add the following (yes, I know these are not just series..): any Dave Mckean books, any work by Evan Dorkin (as an artist…), the excellent hardcover of the “Instant Piano” series, any of the Richard Corben hardcovers, the excellent Ether series, any of Geof Darrow hardcovers including the Shaolin Cowboy series, any volume of Sin City series, Red Rocket Seven series by Mike Allred, the fantastic reprints of Gasoline Alley, the main Black Hammer series, any book by Troy Nixey and, of course, any Hellboy by Mike Mignola.
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
All lists are so inherently unfair to anything left out that I feel my caveats and rules are a way of me mitigating things a bit to help me feel better about it (like how I get to mention twenty comics in a Top 5 😝). I've loved the Dave McKean works I've read as well as the Eltingville Club from Dorkin. I have to look up the Instant Piano, Red Rocket Seven, Troy Nixey and the Richard Corben volumes to see if they are available here. I didn't know Dark Horse did Gasoline Alley - all I've seen are the Walt and Skeezix volumes from Drawn and Quarterly. Shaolin Cowboy and Hellboy I really enjoy, but Sin City is the only comic that I am not that enthusiastic about. Maybe I should give it another look after all these years and see if I feel differently.
@rewanji
@rewanji 3 года назад
@@ftloc You definitely should - Sin City might be the last relevant work published by Frank Miller and, I concede, might not cater everyone’s taste. As for Gasoline Alley they did published at lest 2 oversized collections of the Sunday pages, an excellent complement to D&Q series. You should also consider reading the (now collected) Ether series by Matt Kind and David Rubín

Thank you FTLOC! Breaking out the classics! I was screaming in my head at everyone before you. “Concrete!” No best of Dark Horse list could possibly be complete without Concrete. Also heartily agree with you on Grandville. Anything by Bryan Talbot is pure gold. Age of Reptiles is vastly overlooked and deserves an oversized HC edition. While everyone else picked the low hanging fruit of the obviously great Usagi Yojimbo and Hellboy (though to be honest they would be on my list as well) you brought in the deep cut tracks that not everyone would necessarily have heard of and deserve just as many accolades. I would also like to humbly submit my further recommendations of the lesser recognized Frank Miller masterpiece The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the Twenty-First Century, the magnificent illustration and storytelling of Mark Schultz’s Xenozoic Tales (aka Cadillacs and Dinosaurs), and the beautifully absurd Flaming Carrot. Oh yeah, also the Finder series by Carla Speed McNeil.
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
Thank you so very much! And I completely agree with you: _Concrete_ was the first, instant thought that jumped to mind when I heard of this project, and it never budged! I've heard so much about _Martha Washington_ and just last month I was finally able to pick up the new paperback complete collection; I am really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it! _Grandville_ I am hoping sees an uptick in popularity. or at least access, now that there's an Integral edition of it out, and I would love for something similar to be done for _Age of Reptiles_ ! I really debated _Finder_ for ages here. It did make an honorable mention in my Top 10 Sci Fi comics list but it got left out here for the same reason I used there - I've not been able to get my hands on the second Finder Library volume, leaving my reading incomplete. (I would also be a bit at a loss for what I would take out from this list to include it, probably _Grendel_?) _Flaming Carrot_ I've heard a lot about but never found a viable way to read it here, and I'll definitely be looking into both that as well as _Xenozoic Tales_ Thanks so much once again and cheers!

Your criteria is pretty stringent. Loosening it up, here is my list of "5 pretty neat comics Dark Horse has been involved with in some way or other that you may want to look into": Adventures of Luther Arkwright Axe Cop series The New Deal Niourk Scarlet Traces series Hipster Cred does not equal Good, and Mind MGMT is a textbook example. Sin City and 300 have not aged well. Still haven’t gotten into The Goon or Hellboy, though their artstyles have obvious merit. Dark Empire has unique, striking colouring but rather unimaginative plot ideas, though it is darkly amusing seeing a 2019 blockbuster fall into identical mistakes as a 1991 comic. Usagi and Lone wolf and cub are great, but everybody knows about those already. Grendel looks pretty dull on casual browse, but I am putting it on the reading list nonetheless. One pretty neat thing Dark Horse has published is translations of Italian fumetti: Martin Mystery, Dylan Dog, Nathan Never: going to look into those as well.
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
Haha I've never been called a hipster before, but I guess there's a first time for everything. I'd like to assure you that 'cred' of any kind doesn't usually play a role in my evaluation of things, especially work that I was anticipating having followed the creator for many years before and having enjoyed all their work from 2 Sisters and Pistolwhip, through the Kindt books I mention here 😁. It's fine if you didn't like it, of course, as others in these comments don't, but I think it's a bit dismissive to generalize all those who do like it as somehow being under the influence of less-than-aesthetic-or-critical factors. In translations, I do applaud the effort of publishers, as I do for restorations, but would definitely categorize them separately. The editorial role of commissioning and/or developing is very different when creating work from scratch with a creator, something important for me to distinguish when celebrating a publisher (as opposed to, say, a creator or work itself). I really wish I could get my hands on some Dylan Dog books in English but they seem rarer than hen's teeth here! I love Luther Arkwright and it was a very close call between that and Grandville. Very very close. I will definitely be looking up your other four picks - fingers crossed that I can find some books to at least to sample around here! Cheers!

And they’re buried in my boxes of volumes somewhere. The Age of Reptiles is expensive asking price is $68 I think I have a similar one from the 90s but it’s more Moebius influenced and deals with the asteroid impact that made them extinct 65M years ago .

And the Predators were more of the comic books that entailed 3 or 4 issues for a complete series run. I don’t know the status of current Dark Horse Aliens works as for certain they sold those rights to Marvel and on a good note the new Aliens Omnibus is sensational as well. The are also hardcover Aliens / Predator works that are &50 yes and some ultra rare ones are $200. It’s a labor of love as Aliens fans have been hard core die hards since the 1979 film that’s one of the greatest of all time !!!!

Greetings from Texas. It's rare to see anyone talk about Paul Chadwick's Concrete on youtube. When I joined youtube in 2013 or 2014, I don't remember, the year, primary reason was to talk about comics like Concrete and Grendel since I personally didn't know anyone who had read them. Chadwick was the Thing story from Fantastic Four I wanted to read. You highlighted all the reasons why so many of us enjoyed it. It was never a popular series and I don't think at this point it ever will be even if it's republished. I think for many comic book readers who don't like too much reality in their stories whether they be comics, films, or novels. Concrete may be much to bear. MIND MGMT was excellent. Unfortunately for some readers the art turns them off. They way I try to convince them to read it I tell them it's Jason Bourne done by the Nolan brothers. Grendel didn't make your top 5, but it was an honorable mention. Grendel was one of the most important comics for me and I think in comics. The year was 1983 or early 1984 and I picked up a copy of Mage. Matt Wagner's pencils and the colors were unlike anything I'd seen before in a comic. But my real enchantment was with the back up story: Grendel. Hunter Rose was a novelist and criminal. Sophisticated and deadly. His nemesis was Argent, who by all standard tropes should've been the villain, but he wasn't. "The Devil by the Deed" story was later published in an ovesized trade with an intoduction by Alan Moore. Grendel was the antithesis of Batman, which was only appropriate when Matt Wagner wrote and drew Batman/Grendel, and excellent mini series. Grendel re-defined the comic protaganist. But he wasn't alone. In the early 80's the independent publishers like Comico, which was publishing Mage at the time, were on the same wavelength. Warrior Magazine was a few years in existence and reading Marvel Man (the antithesis of Superman) and V for Vendetta along with Grendel, Howard Chaykin's American Flagg, Mike Grell's Jon Sable Freelance, Mister X, and Love & Rockets, all of which blossomed withing months or a few years of one another was extraordinary. It only made sense that in 1983 a young Alan Moore would be picked to write Swamp Thing, which along with Frank Miller's Daredevil, I think, brought mainstream comics into the modern (or where the Independents and European market had been for many years).
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
Greetings! I am beyond thrilled to read your words. I have long tried to put myself into the shoes of those who saw these comics come out, who witnessed - and celebrated - firsthand the change coming over American comics. I've seen conversations around the underground, alternative scene and the conversations around the mainstream superhero fare but that middle ground, the bridge you describe here so eloquently, has always held a soft spot in my heart. Dark Horse is a wonderful publisher for embracing that so fully, and also deserve all the praise for maing it financially viable. I fear that you are right that perhaps Concrete may not appeal to many who wish for their comics to be solely 'escapist' fare. But in another way, I wonder if times may not have changed to such an extent that it could have a resurgence. After all, there are so many more types of comics readers today, if not more in sheer numbers alone, that it would appeal to people. And the philosophical, ethical and environmental questions at its contemplative core may similarly find more purchase in the minds and hearts of today's readers? I live in hope. As always, your comments illuminate and warm me, and now I need to see if I can find any Mage to read. American Flagg I looked for and couldn't find some years ago, perhaps I will have better luck this time? As always, the very best from New Delhi!

@@ftloc I think your channel is extremely important in promoting comics you believe in out of respect for the medium. It isn't a speculator channel or one that limits the comic medium to standard super hero books. You've introduced or made us reevaluate comics we didn't know about or ignored. Concrete is a great example. Your reviews are insightful and it's clear you've read and thought about the books. The original Mage ran for 15 issues, with Grendel appearing midway. @@ftloc Sometimes, the first time I’m exposed to a piece of art it leaves me cold or scratching my head, but after repeat exposure everything eventually clicks into place. It might happen to me this way with this so I’ll have to see. It’s odd actually but most of my favorite things were this way to me. I’m sure it happened with Watchmen and The Sandman and probably films like Citizen Kane, Vertigo and 2001: A Space Odyssey although all of these might have been this way because I was exposed to them at such a young age. I would probably be a terrible critic because I feel like my opinions change so much over time.

That is a great list, but I think your own caveats disqualifies you fifth pick (and its alternate.) I believe Grandville is meant to be considered as separate stand-alone graphic novels that so happen to be connected by characters, rather than a full ongoing series. And Grendel was published by two companies before moving to Dark Horse. As alternates, I wonder what you think of, or if you considered these homegrown Dark Horse titles: John Byrne's Next Men, The Mask, Frank Miller's Martha Washington and Cullen Bunn's Harrow Country.
@ftloc
@ftloc 2 года назад
Excellent points! Several people have pointed out to me Grendel's previous history, but that is also a great observation about a 'series of interconnected novels' being different from a comics series. I suppose for a reader like me, who doesn't read from monthly pull lists etc but only in trades, a 'series' becomes looser - more about the number of 'volumes', so what I should think of is 'single volume reads vs multi volume'. But I do think at a larger level you're right - discrete long form works that share common characters or setups could be seen as very different beasts to long running series. I suppose the waters get a bit muddy when you have long running series like Astro City that come out in separate chunks of complete story, almost like novels or short story collections within themselves, and on the other side you may have multiple novels that string together, maybe even with cliffhangers making the next book a must read...

Hey there: nice video, well done (as we've come to expect of you... pressure, pressure!). I agree with you some, and disagree with you some. Fitting under your caveats, I'd substitute (or add...) Frank Miller's Sin City, first published in DH Presents, and certainly an exciting and engaging series of stories, for me, at least. It was a short run, but I think it was an important one, for what it said about 'superheroes,'and U.S. America, so I'd add The American to my list of 5, which oh yes would include Age of Reptiles (!!!), Grandville, and Concrete. For me, Beasts of Burden was a great 4 issue series that became quickly too-much-the-same each new mini-series. But Resident Alien--I really enjoy this, and would include it as one of my five. And as an end note, I must dismiss Grendel from your list, by your own caveats and whatevers, as, if you're going to eliminate Usagi Yojimbo (you CAD, you!) due (admittedly, among your other considerations) its previous publishers prior Dark Horse, you must eliminate Grendel from your alternates, due its previous, and original publisher, Comico Thanks for bringing more truly high class comics to wider attention--glad I carved out some time to watch!
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
I realized only when reading another comment here - by Gore Vidal, whose channel you should check out - that Grendel first started at Comico. So strangely, my first pick is more qualified than the sure-thing safety I was playing! I can see what you mean about Beasts of Burden, but I do like the formula and there haven't been that many stories to weary me yet, and I also do read them all many many years apart as it goes, so that helps me feel the joy of returning a bit more. Interestingly (perhaps) I never caught on to in City. I do appreciate the art and it's historical significance, but maybe because I read it many years later than when it first came out I just didn't find the tone and the atmosphere very enjoyable. Enough people have praised it for me to take another look sometime soon, I think.

You should probably read Dark Empire if its the only Star Wars comic you read, the art is very Nostalgic.

I think I'm one of the few readers that didn't enjoy Mind MGMT. I like loose sketchy artwork like Lemire, but Kindt's style never quite clicked with me. But more than that, I just found it rather dull and not particularly thrilling despite the mind-bending premise. I don't like to get negative often, but I feel like I'm missing out. Strongly second Beasts of Burden! I've been meaning to read Age of Reptiles and Concrete - they'll be jumping up my list. Following your rules, I'd have to give a nod to Black Hammer, Hellboy, Shaolin Cowboy, and Apocalyptigirl!
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
Ooh Apocalyptigirl I should definitely look up! I really enjoyed the first LE of Black Hammer, which I guess is three trades? I'm definitely going to get the second one, but it hasn't quite blown me away. The setup is great, so I have no problems keeping going, but I wish the characters had spoken to me a bit more. I love Shaolin Cowboy; I find it borderline mesmerizing. But somehow for this list it was a pretty tough fight, and I kept comparing how 'substantial' it was compared to the competition. Still, it would make my Top 10 😁 A lot of people don't seem to enjoy Kindt's art and I can understand that, but it really works for me when paired with his writing. Somehow stuff is neither too stiff nor too flimsy with that combination, and it's that, I think that goes a long way for me, the unique alchemy.

I really want a physical copy of Concrete BUT its $$ and hard to find. I wonder if DH even still has the rights to it given its a 80s baby as print runs go(1987) The only other channel I follow ,and like yours, pay very close attn to ,is Strange Brain Parts and Off My Shelves. I ordered the Grandville omnibus last week from Organic Priced Books,and cant wait to get it,MIND MNGT by Kendt is on the way from a small Canadian comic shop I found online today that has 'new' old stock of MM by Matt. My collection has exploded in size the last 18 months since I found your channel(3 boxsets and about 40 hardcovers to 11 boxsets and over 200 books,mostly hard covers and about 120 Manga titles(20 Century Boys Perfect Editions,etc,but I am happy as your beautifully obtuse tastes have blessed my wife and I with amazing new adventures,thanks. !! :)

Age of Reptiles?! Beasts of Burden?! I like the cut of your jib FTLOC! And that intro by animation autuer,Genndy Tartakovsky, for AOR is nice, even though it contains a line which at best is a joke about finding inspiration in every piece art and at worse, sounds like pure plagiarism. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that line has never sat well with me, especially considering how Frank Miller's Ronin heavily inspired Genndy's own cartoon, Samurai Jack. The guy In my opinion, owes Frank some serious coin. Thankfully, his most recent cartoon creation (Primal) while ironically enough is purely visual storytelling like Age of Reptiles, also manages to creates it's very own identity and forge a path entire different than the comic it thematically is inspired from. I know I've been on a tangent for a while, but does anything I've said make sense or sound interesting, FTLOC?
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
It all makes complete sense! And I really wonder about that line between inspiration/ homage and outright plagiarism. Of course 'nothing is original' as well have heard numerous times, but the level of 'original craft' added still factors in for me. There's also the issue that sometimes plagiarism is hard to spot if you are not familiar with the original, a good reason to read as much as possible! 😁 It's interesting that you mention Tartakovsky owing Miller coin; I only read Ronin much later, so Lone Wolf and Cub had been available by then, and boy do I think Miller ripped off Kojima something fierce~! It's remarkable how much seems to be taken directly from Lone Wolf, and it's interesting to note how instrumental Miller was to Lone Wolf's introduction to the US. It almost feels like guilt! 🤣

@@ftloc Ronin, in my opinion, while wearing it’s love for Kojima and Koike on it’s skin, it is all inverted so brilliantly by it all being SPOILER ALERT an illusion created by the psychic, paraplegic Billy to be his epic male fantasy to win and woe the affections of the female head of security of the military complex he’s the head of. I got all that btw from a Comic Journal essay just released recently. They even refer to Frank as a young Otaku in the title!. But Genndy…The samurai being flung into the dystopian future, the shape shifting demon responsible for it, and the mechanical minions he employs, all came first from Frank. Only difference is that its not all an illusion, unlike what Frank did. Which would explain why there’s an episode in Samurai Jack where he meets the 300 Spartans from Frank MIller’s 300. Maybe it was Genndy’s attempt to pay tribute to Frank out of respect for the massive debt of gratitude he owed him. And Frank at the time was a success and on top of the world, both financially and critical. Genndy was just a lowly cartoonist whose work only got recognition very, very, VERY slowly as the years went on. His show didn’t even get a proper conclusion until 12 years after it went off the air. As you can see, I’ve thought of, and have a lot to say, about this subject.
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
@@mtperlow1207 I appreciate deep examination and analysis, and really enjoy your approach here! I think Samurai Jack (it has been literally decades since I last watched it so I could be misremembering) meets many famous people from comics and movies, something I too can see as loving homage to multiple sources for his pastiche. And yes, I see your point about Miller doing an inversion, but the 'plagiarism' (very loosely used here, just for the conversation) issues aren't about the larger frame or scaffolding, but about the details of the execution. So even if I write a story in which it was 'all a dream' if the thing I am dreaming about is represented in a particular style that the vast majority of my readers are not familiar with, there's always a chance that I will be seen as the creator of that style. And when you add in movement, closeups and transitions between panels taken almost verbatim, that same line between homage and rip-off starts getting a bit blurry. But these are academic questions of course - standing on the shoulders of giants is the way art progresses, but credit and attribution, in the minds of the reader if not the actual work itself, are also important.
