Niamh, if you like the Concerto in Works, you should try the real thing, like Beethoven's Emperor or Rachmaninov's 2nd and specially 3rd, or Schumann. Anyway, nice selection from both of you

The way I got into Yes, especially their 10-20 minute songs, was to listen to the whole thing and then figure out what sections I liked. So I would place the needle where those sections are but, then, the music kept going and all of a sudden the whole thing came together. It all made sense to me. The entire song became one and to this day I can't get enough of it!

Being a proud Nerd-Notes overlap, I have to give a shout out to Moon Safari (among my favorite Swedish prog bands), and the live version of Crossed the Rubicon that appears in the Live in Mexico release from a concert at the now defunct Baja Prog festival back in 2014. It has 3 epic guitar solos, each one outdoing the previous one. The magical part of this story is that I got the CD at a Mexico City retailer, brand new, for less than 3 USD.

For those who are fans of psychodelic era Pink Floyd check out Boogarins from Brazil. They are a very young group of musicians, recording their first album at one of the member's parents house. On an a side note, Keith Emerson said that Works Vol. 1 was basically a soundtrack of a band breaking up. Wonderful program. I am late to this party. Cheers.

This was another fun discussion between you guys. And yes, definitely if he's up for it, have Pete Pardo as a guest as well (or you guys go on his channel). I lean towards Quadrophenia most, even though Tommy is the more popular pick. 5 of mine? The River Empires - The River Empires: Epilogue Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti The Who - Quadrophenia The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

Topographic Oceans. The Lamb lies down on Broadway. The Wall. Quadrophenia. Incantations. All old albums, nobody in the last twenty years as released a double album that comes close. Sanguine Hum were an also ran but no cigar. 👏👍 I have to add to this after Ayreon comment. I forgot Motorpsycho, how could I. They did get close with Trust Us, Death Unicorn, The Tower and The All is One. Brilliant. I apologise to Motorpsycho, I can't believe I left them out 🤦‍♂️

Hey Notes, great vid with Niahm! When you were talking about Tommy, and how it had that concept album flow and transitions before prog was even a thing. And it made me think about the Beach Boys' "Smile", which was supposed to release around 1967. I've been listening to the 2011 released version, called The Smile Sessions, that has the unfinished/finished mix of tapes in the order they, would have most likely appeared in if it was actually released back in 67, and wow I've been floored by this album and think you'd get a good kick out of listening to it. This album was pretty much a full on prog concept album in the making back in 67 and was never released. I feel like you could really enjoy it, like how you liked their "Holland" album, expect this album had lots of experimentation AND those classic Beach Boys harmonizations penned by Brian Wilson. Really think you'd have a great time listening to it Notes 👍

Great choices here. My favorite double album is Tangerine Dream's "Encore". A live album but as traditionally of them, it's nearly all improvised original material not on other albums of theirs. Sadly I was too young to see them back in their heyday and of course didn't know who they were when I was a kid. Berlin School electronic music at it's best.

Electric Ladyland. In my opinion it's arguably the greatest rock album of the 20th century. Appearances by Jack Cassidy, a very young Stevie Winwood and others on the final studio album production by Jimi Hendrix before his untimely demise. A truly great recording from start to finish. Another great double album? Prince 1999

I typically think double albums are overblown and not worth the time, but the ones that stand out to me are The Fragile by NIN, The Seer by Swans, Songs In the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder, and The Wall.

My favourite double is and will probably always be Yes' Topographic Oceans. When I started to look back at the doubles that I bought back in the day, though, I found that there werent that many apart from classic double and triple live albums - those that I did buy and would inlcude in a top 20 were ELP Works vol 1, The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia, Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and Santana's Moonflower (though half of it admittedly is live). Over the last 20 or so years though, with an increase in both disposable income and awareness I would add in my top 20 but in no particular order - Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago 2 The Beatles White Album The Clash London Calling Todd Rundgren Something/Anhthng and A Wizard,A True Star Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Blue Moves Electric Light Orchestra Out of the bLue Soft Machine Third Miles Davis Bitches Brew Genesis The Lamb Lies Down onBaodway Pink Floyd the Wall Dream Theater Metropolis pt2 Scenes from a Memory Derek and the Dominoes Layla I guess the only 2 that arent prog, proggyish or prog related would be the Clash and maybe Derek and the Dominoes though you cant deny the loveliness of the full Layla . I have to admit also that the Clash were a surprise choice for me, as I'd aways associated them with nasty horrible punk, however London Calling is actually a rather very good rock/hard pop. I was tempted to add in Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Welcome to the Pleasure Dome - great Trevor Horn production and guesting from Steve Howe on acoustic gutar on the title track - though dont go buy the album expecting to hear him soloing.

White Album, Physical Graffiti, Mellon Collie, All Things Must Pass, Electric Ladyland & The Wall... PROG masterpieces... examples of writing short accessible Prog songs (acknowledging these Avant Garde Artist as PROG regardless of elitist rhetoric)... Strawberry Fields Forever is more progressive, unique, original, creative than most 20 minute Prog Epics in a 4th of the time while being universally captivating (several of their songs do this)... Actually surpasses most "Prog" - (don't get it wrong long songs are cool as well - used to argue with some band members over my songs being to long/complicated according to their aesthetic - write your own songs)...lot of "Prog" bands are just doing what classical music already accomplished a 100 plus years before, so their weren't really Progressive at all (just long songs)... The real Prog Artist like the Beatles (Inventors of Prog), Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stravinsky, Jeff Beck, King Crimson (how many 20 minute songs do they have?), Yes, Pink Floyd, Comus, Black Sabbath, Gentle Giant, Rush, Allan Holdsworth, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Queensryche, Fates Warning/OSI/Dream Theater, Queensryche, Tool, Meshuggah, Opeth, Enslaved, Steven Wilson, Gojira, System of a Down, Mr Bungle, RHCP, Mars Volta, Primus, Mastodon and many Metal bands since are doing new things Compositionally (Harmonic/Melodic/Lyric/Production wise) few were as Prog as artist like John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Outkast, etc... (even early Beatles were using chords in new ways breaking traditional classical music directives) Majority of the newer Prog Rock (post 70' Classic Prog movement) bands are generic imitations to me... Rather listen to the truly Progressive Artist in the Prog Metal/Extreme, Shred, Heavy Art Rock, Alt Metal/Rock Universe... Metal in general is the Modern Prog the REAL evolution of Prog... It thrives in the underground between the dark & light just like the 70' Classic Prog bands did... Beatles/Prog bands along with Metal bands have invented musical language never used in classical/jazz movements... Prog/Metal gotta be 2 of the most discriminated genres (from both the Boomer Rockers/non Metal audiences)... Genre-ism (likes a Metal Artist but labels them Hard Rock or won't call it Prog because its Metal based)... It doesn't really matter just pointing it out, its just categorizing (it's Art)... If your a mixed person... part Mexican, part Irish, part whatever doesn't mean your not Mexican because your also Irish or vice versa (one doesn't cancel out the other) The very definition of Prog is to Grow/Progress (complex composition, musicianship, time signatures, chord progressions, genre blending, longer songs but not essential can be Prog in a 3 minute song/piece... Look at the creators of Prog the Beatles) Don't really care if people disagree, these are my words/perspectives not gonna let anyone write my lines... It peoples right to be wrong even when their foolishly ignorant (incapable of independent thinking/decisions (followers)
