They replace the stresses of present life with survival stresses. ie money, bills, social rules, hours in front of a TV. They are a connection to a simpler less material lifestyle.
@@averyjohnson7728 the fifth wave is a book series about aliens invading Earth and trying to take over. Its really really good in my opinion and introduces alot of unique ideas not talked about before.
Brave New World, The Road, Handmaids Tale, Left Hand of Darkness, Clockwork Orange, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, 1984, just to name a few. So many remarkable books in this genre.
I read the Giver in grade school and I wasn't a huge fan of it but that could also be because I read it when I was young. My opinion would probably change if I read it again.
This was an interesting contemporary/recent list. If you haven't read them yet, I highly recommend Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Many feel they're the greatest dystopian books ever written.
Yesss I love dystopian! It’s one of my faves to read even though I was more into it when I was younger. It started with the hunger games for me too! That’s what made me love the genre. I saw the trailer and was like “hmmm, lemme read the books first” and ate. them. up. I have battle royale on my shelf still but I’m saving that for next year when I’ll be reading most of my bigger books! I’m excited for it. I still haven’t read divergent and the maze runner even though I started both 😅. & the 5th wave I liked through the first half of the book, but by the end I didn’t want to continue the series 😭 I’m definitely interested to hear what other ones you’ve read! Some I’ve read and enjoyed are Ready Player One, The Program, The Giver, Warcross, The Grace Year💖, The Selection, Shatter me, Life as we knew it, Scythe, Gone, The Final Six, The Kingdom & a comic series called The Woods which is interesting and I need to continue! tbh your video just made me miss reading dystopians so much 😭 I’m on the hunt for some now 😂😅
Yes! Hunger Games is a staple and you will love Battle Royale, I can just tell 🙂. I have read Ready Player One (really enjoyed it) and I have the entire Gone series since I bought them all on sale but have not read it yet. I also have Warcross on my shelf. Another good one that is a standalone (so far as I know) is called Ashes Ashes by Jo Treggiari.
I would recommend you read, in my personal opinion, the great golden era of dystopian fiction. Which is following World War II, book like Fahrenheit 451 and 1984
It's kinda weird. I've always been into dystopian sci fi stuff. And it kinda turned into a young adult genre with the hunger games becoming this popular. ffs where is handmaids tale, brave new world etc? I actually hoped for a video that would ignore the classics because I'm trying to find some new books, but I didn't expect 4 out of 5 books to be young adult books with all of the books having tv adaptations that most of us have seen and that were mostly bad except for battle royale and it's sorta copy the hunger games
Honestly, I never loved reading books. Well, I only ever love reading psychological and slight fantasy when I was a kid. But the moment I watched Hunger Games, and touched the books, I can't stop searching for something like it. Dystopia Genre is such a good genre that feeds my thirst of something inside me that satisfy myself. I even want to write something like the genre, but of course, I don't really do anything that my mind wants to do. P.S This is gonna sound crazy since I read a lot of comments saying they finished the books in a week, but I actually finished The Hunger Games trilogy in 3 days, minus 4 hours out of the supposedly 7 hours of sleep. It's so addicting lol
ok i halfway passed the vibe check. read 3 out of 5. i’ve seen a lot of people sh!t on TMR but it was one of my absolute favorite series growing up. i dressed up as one of the characters (i think i was thomas?) for halloween when i was 13 and one house wouldn’t give me candy bc they said my costume was bad :) ahhh memories
Battle Royale will blow your mind! It's much more intense than the Hunger games and it is a standalone. I mean it is like a 600 page book but it's worth it 😊
I just reread The Hunger Games this year before the new one came out. Such a good series. My husband and I were watching the Divergent movies (I think we watched all of those) but we only watched the first 2 Maze Runner because the "zombie" people scared me haha. Never got into the books for them. There's just too much to read out there :P
"and of course, there's the classic that everybody knows about, the divergent series" me, who's been looking for people to talk to it about and has not been able to find one person: *confused meme*
Battle Royale is one of the best dystopian books I read. It’s 100x more gruesome than hunger game so I don’t even consider it a YA genre there’s some mature contents, I don’t recommend it for anyone younger than 16
Josephine Angelini’s Worldwalker trilogy is super underrated. I really loved it and I’ve never heard anyone talking about it on booktube. And of course, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Practically a modern classic, so good! Also the audio is narrated by Wil Wheaton, and he kicks ass.
I feel like these are def the staple series of the dystopian hype in the early 2010's. Those were there for a reason, so I def agree that those are probably some of the best and well known. I do wonder what dystopian gems we might all be missing out on now though since dystopian isn't as popular.
1984 and Brave New World are my faves. Interesting to read both because they're similar in some ways but total opposite in others. Would definitely recommend these classics if you haven't already read them!
He's never read them! Hey, book dude with the channel - why do you put little hearts next to comments about books you've never read? If anyone else takes the time to inform you that these are all children's books (other than this guy who seems to be the only other one to mention Huxley and Orwell) please put a little heart next to his/her comment for me. Thanks!
Glad you mentioned it! I always felt like the hunger games did have some parallels in reality mostly in war because young men were sent out to fight each other on the behalf of old rich guys, sure it wasnt entertainment in the same way but they were dehumanized and used as pawns to fight to the death, they suffered greatly - physically and emotionally, they still do. Haymitch and Katniss having PTSD seemed to solidify that, especially Haymitch being an alcoholic as a coping mechanism, the only problem was when it portrayed humans as naturally violent but I think it was out of desperation i.e., kill or be killed. I just always thought of it as an anti-war book much like harry potter being anti eugenics.
I never really thought of the Hunger Games like that but it really does line up with what you are saying about the war. Definitely something to think about 🤔.
@@BreakevenBooks Yeah - never mind the fact that it's (1984) considered to be one of the most important novels of the 20th century. But if your followers on your channel told you it's worth your time, then you should read it. Go back to school dude, or at least read a list or two from an authoritative source before starting your own list of "top" whatever. The world needs reviews/analysis/opinions from people that know wtf they are talking about. Not from mullet-headed children that seemingly can't read over an 8th-grade level. I sincerely hope that whoever wrote the comment was being facetious. In the old world, I would have know that was a joke, but in today's world, I'm not so sure.
I'd really like to get more into dystopian books. I loved the Hunger Games, but beyond that, I don't have a ton of reading experience in this genre, just some here and there. The 5th Wave sounds really cool!
I liked the Newflesh series by Mira Grant aka Seanan McGuire. Three books, zombie apocalypse but with a few twists on the genre. Her other dystopian one (Parasite) one is probably good if it is the first series you read. However, Parasite and Newsflesh are so similar--including a clever brave dog, a rogue mad scientist in hiding, a plucky couple and some sidekicks--it's hard to read the other series if you read the first because the second series you read will be deja vu over and over and over--so much so, you can predict what will happen and when; you can see the cliffhanger coming and you already know how it will be resolved. So, probably best just to read one of them--I'd recommend Newsflesh because it did have a twist or two I didn't see coming and probably wouldn't have seen coming even if I had read the Parasite series first.
Someone help me please. So, a few years ago I’ve read a dystopian book about a world where everything’s controlled by the government and there’s a girl and her family and the 1st part of those series is about her life. But then she meets a boy (Kyle his name was???idk) and it changes everything. I totally forgot the name of the book and the author. The girl also has a younger brother. One day their home is raided by the government or something like this. If someone here knows this, please please tell me the name of the books. There were also something about the paintings the girl loved and the flowers. Sorry for such a stupid description but I really need to finish the series lol😂 Edit: I remembered more: all people die at 80 or so. In their world was a list of the number of paintings and songs (idk I remember it was important). No one knew how to write but that boy was teaching the girl to do it.
The Power by Naomi Alderman is a solid dystopian read, as is everything by John Wyndham I've read to date (Start with The Chrysalids, The Day of the Triffids, and Chocky-while written in the 50s-60s is impressively relevant still) but as a series, you might like Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood (has 2-3 sequels) and The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken.
I read The Chrysalids in high school and thought it was interesting. I have seen The Darkest Minds movie and it was really cool so I would definitely read the books!
Yes!!!! The Hunger Games! I am definitely in the minority I think with the Maze Runner series. I just didn't enjoy it after the first book and I powered through all five but I just didn't love them. I also really enjoyed Divergent. I know not everyone loved it, especially that last book. But I enjoyed all of it.
i’m so sad i was never able to get through the maze runner bc it’s such an interesting idea, i refused to watch the movie until i finished the first book (i ended up watching it regardless and loved it sm)!! i love the divergent series so much!!! but the ending :( hehe wow!! it’s quite rare when someone says they’ve enjoyed the 5th wave, i was never able to get into it, but i really liked the movie :$ great video :D
I am seeing from the comments that a lot of people didn't like The 5th Wave which surprises me lol. The Mazerunner books are way better in my opinion but the movies were pretty well done too! 😊
The most important series in dystopian fiction (and maybe any other) at the moment is the Random Skies series by Jim Cheshire. First one was written in 1999 and describes a bio-engineered pandemic in the 2020s leading to depopulation, a new world order and a microchipped surveillance society. Check the full description on Amazon. It started to come true this year and so far there is nothing to stop these books from happening! There are ten of them out, and they skip forward about a year at a time, developing the characters, the corporations and the maniacs who tried to steal the world. Right now, required reading.
Taking me back to my dystopian phase! Dystopias are the reason I love reading. I think I started with hunger games and then read every single YA dystopian series I could possibly get my hands on!
i love the hunger games obviously, and battle royale is on my christmas list for my parents. i love the battle royale movie so hopefully i enjoy the book too! i just read the first maze runner prequel this month and thought it was actually quite fun.
DYSTOPIAN SERIES!!! Hunger games!! I only read the first one since it was right before quarantine and the library is no longer open. cRi* I would DEFINITELY DIE IN YHE HUNGER GAMES! Lol that edit. I see you think the same way! WOAH THAT COVER!! What I title though! I could say that in an announcer voice. BATTLE ROYALE!! Nooo I hate it when characters I get attached to die!! Soul crushing indeed. ;-;. LOL! Ain’t that what happening now? I heard of maze runners!! Yeah that’s why I don’t do too many dystopian books. I GET TOO ATTACHED!! Oooof I wanna read divergent now!! I saw the first 30 mini of the 5th wave movie!! It was ok! Loved the video!! Have a wonderful day!
You have to finish the Hunger Games series when you can! Catching Fire just keeps getting better. I always get attached and then things happen and I hate it but I love how dystopias always have me on the edge of my seat. Thanks for another Katie comment 😊
I dont knownif it counts as dystopia but I really enjoyed The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline. The Scythe Series by N. Shusterman. And Red Rising! Wow that series is gory damn good
I wanted to mention Red Rising since it technically classifies as Dystopian but I may be saving that for another video 😉. I haven't read The Scythe series but have heard amazing things about it 😊
@@BreakevenBooks Its good. I enjoyed it. The world is pretty amazing. Scyth series that is. My daughter made me read it. Im gonna dig into the Unwind series too, also by Shusterman. And yes, Red Rising. That series! I havent read Iron Gold or Dark Age but excited to read that too. 😁😁😁
I'm overwhelmed by the number of choices, and I have trouble describing the books I want in sufficient detail because of this. I'm currently reading non-fiction books like How to Win Friends, which I find interesting, but perhaps as a "beginner" I should start with fiction.
For meeee, most of these books didn't stand the test of time... BUT I read Battle Royale last year AND its now one of my favorite books of all time! It is so fucking good, such a page-turner. I started doubting like the people in my personal life too 😂wondering if they would kill me in a similar situation lol. Even though it's referenced so much, I don't see enough people reading it. I really loved the movie too. (I actually made a video where I tried to make everyone read it during quarantine hahha, it didnt go over so well)
YES Battle Royale is so underrated. All those characters that you end up liking and then feel sad because you know that they are all fighting to the death. I haven't watched the movie yet but hope to get to it 😊
The fact that all these are YA except Battle Royale! We need more Adult dystopian titles! The only one I had not read any of the books is The 5th Wave. I just never picked them up when it was so popular, but now I think I'll never pick it up. 🤦♀️
I would also love some more Adult dystopian books! It is such a fun genre and I always enjoy them. I do love me some YA though. Mainly because I feel like I read them way faster 😋.
I love your RU-vid channel, and your run down of dystopian novels here, and other video about sci-fi novels. I wanted to share my new and first novel with you - The Youth Movement - a sci-fi dystopia, self-published as a paperback and Kindle on Amazon. I can send you a copy in the post if you like. A quick blurb: Mid-21st century London is overrun with teenage gangs fighting the ghosts of Britain’s liberal past. A disillusioned lobbyist and washed-up politician pin their hopes on an unstable tech entrepreneur. And a girl, tracked by her friends and a pair of undertrained agents, has her brain hacked and is exiled amongst the people she most despises. My dystopian novel follows idealistic outsiders from three intertwined eras and questions whether living in history can help us avoid making the mistakes of the future.
Sounds really cool! I can't take on any more book reviews at the moment as I have quite a large pile to get through but definitely reach out again in the future 😊
Ya'all know i started smiling when you brought up The Maze Runner, Guestian, do you have the rest of the series? Cause ot THE MAZE RUNNER,THE SCORCH TRIALS, THE DEATH CURE,THE KILL ORDER,THE FEVER CODE. Also do you have the novella,Crank Palace,? ALSO, I. AM. SO. EXCITED. THERE. IS. GOING. TO. BE. A. NEW. BOOK. CALLED. THE MAZE CUTTER. BEING. PUBLISHED. ON. NEWT DAY!(cause Newt day is September 7th cause its the 250th day of the year.) Please answer my comment💜❤💜❤💜❤💜❤💜
@@BreakevenBooks your welcome! I'm not sure if it actually is being released or whatever on NEWT day but I'm pretty sure that's what it said on Google I don't know❤
hmmm one dystopian book that i read a long time ago was legend by Marie Lu series, its a dystopian romance. pretty sure it a 3 part book series but i think they came out with a surprise 4th book sometime last year or maybe this year. but from what i remember its really good and i recommend it!
@@BreakevenBooks Its Author Neal Schusterman has a good backlog of books. Only read a bit of it so far, but Scythe is also a seemingly good book/trilogy that sorta flips the dystopian theming on its head where things are too perfect where death isn't even a thing and itself causes issues.
I'm disappointed that all those books are very recent. You might be surprised to know that The Handmaid's Tale was written 35 years ago. Then there's Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Q (and also Vox) by Christina Dalcher, The Flood by Margaret Atwood and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. That should keep you busy for a day or two!
I'm trying to recall a book I read in the early 90s that was a dystopian type... It was all about Equal no matter what. If you had good vision they gave glasses that distorted your vision, if strong you would have to carry around a heavy backpack or braces that would slow you. Ugly and unqualified people were hired in place of qualified attractive in the name of equality. Does anyone know what Book I'm referring to? Thanks
I have no "new" distopian books to recomend but I have dipped my toe over lockdown and read Huxleys Brave New World I found it a suprisingly short/easy read On the one hand thinking this sounds like a really nice way to live then you think a little deeper and relise what an absolut horror story it is. Also I started 1984 but found it really easy to put down I hope to go back to it but I can see why the film was made in BnW the book feels like it was written in black n white just dower and depressing.
@@carolinealvarez7534 I did! I enjoyed them as well but not as much as the original trilogy. I did like all the extra stuff we get to learn about the world though.
I love your channel. I just published a dystopian novel. Your review would mean a lot to me. I'll send you a copy if you're interested and have the time.
Thanks for the kind words about the channel. I currently don't have the time to take on any more reviews at the moment but definitely reach out again in the future!
The best dystopian future novel I've read would probably be The Penultimate Truth by Philip K Dick. Closely followed by every other book by Philip K Dick 😂
Hello from Germany! Nice Video, thanks very much! I read a new dystopian Novel, which thrilled me like crazy. It is one of the best dystopias I ever read. It was published in october 2020. The name of the books is: Der unterirdische Komplex - Düstere Zukunft. I saw it on amazon. Unfortunately, it is only available in german language. Maybe there are people out there, who are nevertheless interested.
Where's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Do Androids Dream of Electrical Sheep?, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange and many other classics? These books are for children.
Did you even listen to the beginning of the video? I said these are the best that "I have read so far". And just because I don't have the same books that you would have on your list does not make them any less valid.
@@BreakevenBooks Yet, those are lots of books. Read the classics instead of the hollywood hyped books. George Orwell is, hands down, the most classic dystopian author. Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm are a must read for anyone.
@@WilliamAlvesExperience I will read what I feel like reading because I do it for enjoyment. I'm not a big fan of classics but I do have 1984 on my list because it has been recommended to me a lot.
The books are solid, they don't lose anything, It may be the reader the one losing the hability of suspensión of disbelief which has little to nothing to do with maturity. I hope you get well soon if that's your case 🙂
