To those wanting to bring a first aid kit i would recommend putting your own together, pre made kits are always more expensive and usually contain some items you won't ever use. Building your own kit up means you can tailor it to your specific needs.

Probably the most important thing you should carry in your first aid kit is a tourniquet. Very easy to apply but the one thing that will kill you the quickest after head trauma is catastrophic blood loss. You can apply it to yourself one handed and has saved more lives than I care to imagine. Bandages and plasters all well and good, but only any good for something minor. Sorry to drop the mood here, but as a medic - I can honestly say - trust me on this one.
Good video, but just a point, you should turn on your compressor BEFORE you attach it to the tire. Otherwise the load on the compressor facing the pressure of the tire can cause the a spike in the current and blow your fuse. It happened to me!
@@FortNine - Another reason I'm glad I carry a Blackburn mountain bike pump instead of an air compressor, although I may regret it in the hopefully unlikely event I need to inflate a tire after plugging a leak.
@@heathr6995 CAT TQ is the most straightforward to use. The Israeli tq is a pressure dressing rather than a tq but I'm sure you can get it tight enough to cut off blood flow.I keep a tq on me at the very least. God forbid you take the big spill...if you fall just right you can bleed out rather quickly.
I have always ridden with all mentioned here. Been riding for 40 yrs. I'd add 3 more things. 1. Small flashlight. I use a newer kree type which is super bright for a mini light. And I don't end up draining my phone battery using its light. 2. Bottled water. You mentioned a first aid course. I'm an instructor and in first aid, clean, sterile water is essential. Bottled water fits the bill. 3. A lestherman tool. It doesn't have to be the Leatherman brand, but a multi tool like that ends up being indispensable in so many situations even with your bike tool kit.
If a bottle won't fit in the limited storage of most sport bikes a plastic bag and water purification tablets will also work. Bottled water is definitely more ideal though.
I would also include/suggest these as essentials too: LED hazard light/flare and/or a flashlight - Which is good for signaling people/first responders/etc, or working in low-light conditions. Water or sports drink(and a straw) - I get thirsty when I ride for more than 30 minutes, especially if I get stuck in traffic (lane splitting is not legal here), regardless of the temperature. The one time I had forgotten to bring a drink, I was so focused on riding that I had began to develop "heat exhaustion" which forced me to pull over, strip down a little and sit in some shade... and then a police car(officer gave me water and let me cool off in his car).
Good call. They have ink pen sized flares like the ones you'd use in a boat. If you let someone know where you planned to be and had an issue it could really help someone find you.
I carry toolkit with spark plug wrench & extra s plug ... Tire plug kit and bicycle hand pump... My own set of metric wrenches... A c hazard flashing LED light..& headlamp led.. a small first aid kit with blood stopper powder I will be adding a SWAT-T tourniquet also

Tire Plugs: I worked in a tire shop and I never cared for the mushroom plugs. I did like the rope/cord style. Get one with T Handle, it is hard to push/pull the strait ones. Happy riding
I'm so glad to see you have a IFAK in your kit. I'm an EMT-A in the US, and I also ride(Honda guy here). My FAK is a little more comprehensive due to my level of training, but I am so glad I had it and so is my brother in law last weekend. We went fly fishing at this local spot that is always a blast to take my CRF and his KTM to. He's allergic to bees, so he asked me to put his epipen in my kit, because he's still waiting for bags. Anyway we had some heavy winds and rain a couple weeks ago, and it knocked over a tree on our path to the stream. He was the lead man, and unbeknownst to him, ran over a hornets nest. He ended up taking a sting to his neck, causing me to have to give him his pen. Luckily we got everything taken care of immediately, or needless to say my wife's sister would probably be a widow.
I think something for traumatic bleeding is more valuable than everything in that first aid kit combined. Somebody else mentioned tourniquets, but QuikClot is a really neat option. (The sponge, not the gauze.) There's a great video of them testing it on a pig (about human size), cutting a femoral artery.
Great video topic! I carry pretty much the same, except for the rain gear. I live in SoCal and rain is mythical (I do have it and will carry it if forecasts are predicting moisture falling from the skies). Made my own basic tool kit I carry at all times, and have a more comprehensive one for multi-day trips. And I can attest to the Stop&Go product working! I was stranded with a flat a few years ago and a fellow rider stopped by and gave me his kit. I recently gave it to another stranded rider and bought a new one.
Another great video but I have to make a recommendation regarding the first aid kit: if you go down at speed, this will be useless. The typical injuries that occur in most crashes are: extensive road rash, broken bones, and injuries that can cause major bleeding. The solution: purchase 1-2 large trauma bandages. These are around 8" x 10" large guise bandages that are good for covering large rash ares, large cuts, and the stumps,of any limbs that are detached (avulsed); some Z-Medica coagulation powder or impregnated Giuseppe bandages. This powder is capable of stopping arterial bleeding. Cinchable high pressure bandages. These Israeli mad bandages are made do the gauze pad cand be cinched tight to provide pressure at the scene of the injury; a tourniquet, preferably a special operations version that is capable of self application; Mylar "space" blanket. These are great for if you are stranded in the cold, but crucial for warding off shock from an injured victim. All of these items can be bought on line, especially on eBay. I also recommend a waterproof strobe to draw attention to you and the crash site in darkness so it isn't compounded by additional vehicles becoming involved. Of course, wearing appropriate protective clothes and hi viz garments and gear can go a long way in preventing your need for using your first aid kit. It's still crucial for other victims you might come across.

I am a commuter cyclist, never rode a motorbike, I am not qualified to. Still, I love this channel and it is full of common sense and generalngood advice. Your gear is very similar to what I carry. Some medical supplies for injuries, including medical alcohol, a tube patching kit, tube spare, gloves for dirty work, a pump, tools and a rain jacket (sometimes full body protection).
Hey Ryan, in my experience from working on the ambulance I think it is very recommendable to add a high quality tourniquet to your first aid kit. With all the obstacles in the streets and in the woods, limbs can be severed or arteries be injured in a bad crash if one is unlucky. Or have at least a belt with you. Ideally let medical staff show you how to use it. Ride safe and greetings from Germany :)

I love practical videos like this. Wish I'd seen it before equipping my ADV bike. I'm a big fan of small and lightweight minimalism, but I went significantly upscale on my custom assembled tool roll and an augmented first aid kit, but I saved some size and weight (and money) by carrying a mountain bike pump instead of a compressor. Yes, it'll take longer if I need to inflate a tire after plugging a hole, but I may never need to do this and a good Blackburn pump is going to be more reliable and maintainable than a compressor.
I'm glad I watched this video a few months ago and bought the Stop N Go tire plugging kit with the air compressor. It came in handy a few weeks ago when I got a flat at work. Thanks RyanF9!
Tire plugs are temporary fix. Yes you can drive or ride for a long time or forever using tire plug but technically you should not. On hight speeds and temperature they can come loose and push out and that is dangerous The hole that you clean to install them will promote water between the layers of the tire rubber and if there are steel wires they will eventually rust and migrate further and surprise you with a bad blow out one day. Thank you for all your hard work always to deliver proper information well researched. Also never use a plus if it is close to the side wall of the tire. Unless really you are going to drive slowly until you get a proper fix .
i always carry jumpers, zip ties, duct tape and jbweld/epoxy as well never know when it'll come in handy (all of this in the trunk of an F4i, so NO EXCUSES!
A tire plugger I highly recommend. Helped a Harley rider out with the one I carried in my truck. Nice to see more compact compressors available as well. Packable Rain Gear, First Aid and Tool Kits, SHOULD BE A NO BRAINER, here in Canada. While cell coverage is good in most places, response times may not be, (given the distances travelled.) Three items I'd add, a folding knife with serrated blade, flashlight, and firestarter. Always carried them in off road backpack.

Tubeless tire repair kit saved my ass. I was riding back from Inuvik on the Dempster Highway, somewhere between Eagle Plans and Dawson when I got a flat rear tire on my V-Strom 1000. The road is made up of shale & punchered the tire.
I love all of this channel's content, and sometimes I get a little chuckle at the sheer Canadianness of measurements. Measuring something by weight? Grams. Measuring something by volume? Inches.

I have a Peugeot Speedfight 3 moped, and I have a First aid kit, tool kit, manual tire pump and a flashlight underneath the seat(there’s a big compartment with a lock). I’m trying to get my hands on a tire plugger kit too. I put it in a watertight box(say I crash and the moped falls in a river/lake the stuff won’t be all wet) that fits perfectly in a small recess of the compartment so I still have room for a Brake disc lock and a spare helmet for when my friends want a ride too.
Despite the fact you slagged the tire plugger in your recent video I have used it to fix a tire in an emergency and it was the bomb! I have a similar compressor ( loud and slow ) to yours but about the size of a pack of smokes, for god's sake, but it works! Back on the road in MINUTES! Even if you use the worms, you are supposed to go to a garage and get an interior patch put in to "repair" a tire puncture. How many do you know who have done this, even on a cage?

that tire plug kit is very easy to use as compared to sticky rope plugs. used it on regular car tires like 4 times last year. no pressure drop whatsoever. I became an expert with that tire plugging. Never used it on my bike though , but it stays under my seat at all times.

I carry a Slime tire repair kit in my backpack; its supposed to work well from what I've heard and researched online. Concerning off road riding in colder weather - if you're not prepared to survive the night; then your NOT prepared. I have a motorcycling checklist on my computer that I refer to before each ride, so that I never forget anything.
I have had terrible experience with slime. It isn't enough to stop a leak, at best it delays a complete flat until a surprise time. At worst, and at most common, it just lets you get a flat and makes it so the patch is contaminated and unfixable.
Mushroom tire pluggers have a fatal flaw. Unless inside of the tire is flat where the hole is located, it will leak. This is usually not the case as the hole will inevitably push some rubber to the inside opening of the hole. Also, there's no way that compressor can fill an air mattress without over heating. It would have to run for hours and would probably run your battery down. But I suppose a small, thin, single person air mattress would be feasible.
stop and go plugs work really well! still using the same tyre for 3000 miles without a loss in air pressure, however, I recommend using the gun tool with the plugs.
Have you looked at DynaPlug for puncture repair ? It's a much smaller unit (about the size of a CO2 canister) and has no need for a bradawl or other tools - just a knife/wire cutters to trim off the excess. I found a puncture in my rear tyre the night before I left for a 700 mile round trip into Europe and when I measured the pressure when I got home, it had dropped maybe 1 or 2 psi (same as the undamaged front tyre). It took around 20 seconds to repair the tyre - just make sure there's enough pressure in the tyre and it'll push through with no struggle. Considering it's not even expensive and the replacement plugs are also cheap, I really think it's one of the most valuable bike-related things I've ever bought. Apart from my actual bike obviously. :)
Practical suggestion on first aid kits. Look to military style IFAK. They are compact, and are a lot more of a kit for" let's keep this person from bleeding to death until we can get to medical support" than "let's put a bandaid on this ouchie."

Alright, The tire plugger is amazing. I have plugged multiple holes with one. It is the difference between riding to get a new tire and having to line up a trailer for transport. It is simple to use.

I strongly suggest a first aid course, three years lifeguarding and two years teaching lifeguards and I've been through the course 3 times myself and it has changed my life. Just a few hours in a class can save someone's life.
With the plugger YMMV. The inside of the tyre can have ribs, it it goes on one of these there won't be a 100% seal and some leakage will ensue. It will get you home but you'll need a proper patch. If it goes on a smooth part of the inside, it'll work a treat.
It's only good for about 40 miles and on road riding though. I did a bit over 40, with two of those plugs. You'll notice when you need more than one, if air is escaping. I didn't have to use the air pump again before getting home. Drove about 13 miles after using them and checked: no air was gone.
yeah I watched all 5 hack videos and some of the ideas I'm like shaking my head at but then others are sensible ideas. I particularly liked your anti fog and water bead ideas. newspaper inside the jacket is a little wierd but the tool kit additions were fine. I'll watch them again as asside from the questionable ones, you have a good knack for this sort of stuff. BTW the aluminium bladder was an Australian Invention, used on Cask wine I'm told.
Here in Austria you have to carry a first aid kit by law. Also you have to take a first aid course to even get your driving license. Anyway, great Videos, I've watched a few now and I love them!
Viewing this in Feb 2021 and you, Ryan, now primarily ride a BMW 800, hopefully you updated the rain gear to BMWs, yellow, full body rain suit. Ride in comfort all day in the rain without it running down the crack of your a.. behind into your boots because the jacket rides up or those suspenders won't winch up. Neck, sleeve and boot cuffs make it a great wind barrier too when it gets cold.
I am a little behind, but the tire plug works pretty good, I have used that style plug on car tires. It works better then the twist string I feel. Thanks and ride safe
All excellent suggestions for EDC. I also carry all those items except for the first aid kit, but that was already on my to-do list to find one. I went with the rope style tire plugs though because I know they work great. I have plugged many truck tires with them and they work flawlessly. Those mushroom plugs get mixed reviews.
Excellent Review .. I would suggest adding a tunicate to the First Aid Kit .. I like my Rain coat from J&B Cycle over pants and hacked all fold into a pocket in the jacket and zip shut.. J&B sells it under their name ..
I keep a tire plugging kit that has these kinda tar covered string looking plugs in my car just because I’ve bought used tires with this kind of plug in them before and they’ve outlasted the remaining tread on the tire I can imagine those will work fine for you. Problem is inflation which is why I now keep an aerosol type product in my trunk as well.
I plugged a Jeep Wrangler 4x4 tire with my stop n go. It's been nearly a year and it's holding fine, no bulge or air loss. Yeah shouldn't run on a plug that long but the friend with the Jeep can't afford a new tire
Heres a tip for two stroke riders. ALWAYS keep new spare sparkplug on your tool kit+tools to chance it. If you cant fit normal tools, modify tool to fit and work in your kit. Just couple days ago i messed up and forgot all my tools and equipment on test ride.. welp bike blew a spark plug 5km away and i noticed couple wires were not good, so i had to call help to get going again. Currently building my tool kit to work with this bike and probably end up building new kit to my next bike. Its the 10 cent faults usually that make it or brake it, so keep spares with you. It wont hurt to have little bit brake fluid in sealed container, extra fuel that you can pour into tank and refill everytime you top the tank, fuses, light bulbs, flashlight and if you are really unlucky get peace of chain and lock so you can safely store your bike in location to get it after walking home.. you will much rather walk than push the bike 5km...

Hey Ryan... looks like the tool kits for Jap bikes have lost a lot of tools in the past few years. my stock kit from a 06 Kawi Z750s has everything that you mentioned and also the tools needed to adjust preload. will definitely throw most of the rest under my FortNine wishlist so i can get when funds arrive
The tyre plugs seem to be really good, I have bought a motorbike that had a tire plugged with it and I have only discovered about it after like 6 thousand kilometers. no air leaking nothing. Impressive.
I heard that the mushroom type plugs are not good they can fail the best kind of plugs are the sticky rubber strips instead you don't even need glue just ream out the hole with the reamer. Peel off one of the sticky strips put it to the eye of the tool and push it in the hole leaving approximately a quarter of an inch sticking out of the tire then trim it with a razor blade or knife
Advice: Always ride with tools, not the OEM ( all I got was 2 little allen keys), but a good set. Why? When your shift lever unscrews itself and you're stuck on the side of the road at 5:00 am, you'll know why (personal experience)
First aid kit is a good idea but some gauze and a couple of band aids won't do the job in a real situation (been there) you need large field dressings for anything more than a scratch. You can put a proper first aid kit together for yourself for a lot less.
When putting air in your back tire put you’re bike on the center stand it will relieve a little pressure and those little pumps can use all the help thy can get.
I'd add a 1 gal jerry can. As for weather gear, here in Florida we have a saying "if you dont like the weather wait 10 minutes". Florida is bipolar as fuck with its weather. It could be bright & sunny with zero clouds & then all of a sudden bam, its pouring rain.
As far as a tubeless tire plug kit goes, you can get one at the dollar general for like 3 bucks. Around here in Arkansas at least. Just no bag. But at that price I'll find my own bag

I thought, when you started talking about a first aid kit, and the importance of it on every ride, that you would bring out a supper trauma pack, not a few band aids, that pack wouldnt be much use on anything series. However, i love the channel normaly :)
