Today we are talking about failures of the VW Tiguan. The failures of the Tiguan are rather minor, other than issues with the 2.0T TSI engine. That is where most of the failures come from. I left out many of the TSI engine failures from this video. Check out the video I did on TSI engine failures.

I guess I am glad I decided not to go all in and buy an SEL in '14. I got the SE with the simple radio fearing the more options it had the more could break. I do LOVE my Tiguan though

Have you had any problems? I have always owned Toyotas and I am not used to paying for anything more than oil changes, tyres and brakes. Now ordered the new Tiguan and looks like German engineering is not all that.

My employer has 50-60 Tiguans, they are driven around 50000km a year, around half of that is with a 1500kg+ trailer attatched and the rest stop and go never more than 2 km between stops. They have so far had no really bad faults, other than beeing too small for 5 grown men. The rear door is too small for getting large workboots in and out quickly and the center cupholder in the rear is broken in every single one because of bad placement. (when someone has to sit in the middle with big heavy workboots they kick them to pieces getting in and out) I don't really like them due to the auto-wipers and electronic parkingbreak, also the steering wheel it too high even in the lowest setting. but those things aren't exclusive to the tiguan, but every new car I've tryed..
@baluesclues8929
@baluesclues8929 7 лет назад
So agree with the steering adjustment... I an not short, but my legs are longer than my torso and being able to drop the steering wheel another couple of inches would compensate for having to sit so far back in the seat.

Live in remote area where snow and ice big problem but my wife each have a Tiguan and love the way they handle the snow and ice. Very sporty and one at 145000 km and the other at 187000 km and we plan on keeping them into the 300000 plus range at least. If you do regular maintenance and don’t drive like an asshole they run well. Yes had some of these issues but so did most other cars we have had.

First thing to go on mine (in the UK) were the front suspension console mounts (just worn, not broken), warning lamps and the dimming switch, all after 3.5 years. No other faults.

You’re right. With all the technology integrated in cars nowadays people will be pressured to buy new cars more often because these vehicles will be obsolete not long after they come out. Also I live in a state where emissions inspections are required every year and what people are doing is just buying a new cars when the check engine light comes on.

It is so annoying when people get in the comments to say "I don't have those issues or I have had no issues. " You have to realize you if they have sold 300,000 units....you have one of those units. You might be the lucky one. Clearly these observations are over the course of years of being a mechanic.

Are these mostly issues on the early Tiguans or have you seen these on the later ones as well? I have heard of timing tensioners exploding in 2009-2010 Audi 2.0T motors, so maybe earlier models have more problems? Or do they get lazy and cheap out after a few years on this car?

I just bought a 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan the day before New Year's eve. It has been in the shop 3 times since then. It is February 9th, and the damn check engine light just came on again. I'm taking it in on Monday. I hope I didn't buy a complete lemon. What are your thoughts? First it was a vacuum leak, next it was a rear seal oil leak, third time it was a gasket...lols! I afraid to know what is next? However, I heard you say something about a smell being caused by a leaky panoramic sun roof... I have noticed a smell off and on. Now I think you have just helped me figure out where it was coming from! Thank you for you helpful advice!

Hey man! Awesome videos! I'm thinking of grabbing a 2011 Tiguan with 60,000 miles on it. Car drove like a dream and started up great. My only concern is I see a lot of water pump, turbo, and timing complaints on these Tiguans right around the 60,000 mark. Would you say those are rare, probably user inflicted cases? (Too long between oil changes, etc.) or would you advise to stay away from the vehicle all together? The vehicle had one owner, and driven an average of only 6000 miles a year. Thanks a lot!

I currently own a 2011 fwd Tiguan 2.0t. it is a very fun car! Faster than most road cars, fat enough for whatever ya need. However, they have a recall for a timing chain tensioner that could nuke the engine in that mile range. Also, fwd is shit with turbo and weight, so it is not too good in the rain.... Mine's had two crashes at low speeds simply because ABS didn't kick in or traction control couldn't handle the weight of the SUV. If you live in a fair weather area you're golden!

Great video! I'm searching for a late model used Tiguan. I turned in my Passat TDI and have been driving a 2012 Jetta 2.5 that I picked up really cheap and would like to add another vehicle. These things drop like rocks in value compared crossovers like RAV4 and CRV. The Tiguan is really an excellent value used. I just hope its not a nightmare to own.

There are a few things that need to be addressed if you buy an old one. They are okay... just okay. That comes from someone who owns one. Well we are leasing one. I do think I would like it less if we owned it. But knowing we can give the keys back in a year is nice.

I have a 2018 Tiguan bought it brand new. Every ~2,000 miles the low oil light comes on. I take it VW and they all tell me it’s normal to burn a lot of oil. Every time they add about a quart and half of oil. I drive about 300 miles a month and they are around town. I helped my room mate change the WP on his tiguan because the thermostat was sticking open. Annoyingly this failed a few thousand miles after we did the intake manifold! We should have done the PCV at the same time because a cold snap seemed to make it freeze up and it blew out the rear main in one evening's drive. Oh well.... Interesting about it having 2 fuel pumps in the tank. I assume the Touareg is similar? One side just refills the other side?

Is the panoramic sunroof supposed to leak but drain through drain hoses? I had a major leak into the car and it messed up my Blu tooth unit there was so much water it was sloshing around ABOVE THE CARPET. After hours of trouble shooting with a hose, I managed to find out that the rear drain hose connection to the rubber grommet where it goes outside was short. That, plus a build up of gunk at the rubber grommet allowed the water to build up in the hose and leak through the connection at the grommet. To check if this is your problem, just run a hose over the sun roof, and use your thumb to plug the hose at the bottom (behind tail light house). If there isn’t more water coming in, this is very likely your issue.
@urgrandmascar
@urgrandmascar 3 года назад
I used a larger rubber hose to extend the drain hose, plus sprayed some flex seal around it to ensure nothing will leak at the connection again.

A running garden hose and removing the trunk panelling is your best friend to trouble shoot the problem.

I personally would not buy a car with that many miles especially a Tiguan. I've been researching Tiguans for a few months now because I want one so badly. I've read A LOT of mechanical issues under 100k so I think the gamble is even bigger with one that is past that. Just my personal opinion. I still want a Tiguan regardless of the issues I've been hearing/reading, I just need to learn how to fix some of the issues myself when they arise and be on top of keeping it well-maintained. Good luck.

Replacing the manifold due to poor design and the use of materials that are not fit for purpose is not acceptable. The same goes for the water pump.

I am buying a MY2012 Tiguan 2.0TSI 4Motion and it has done 45,000miles. I had a vagcom scan done and it only has an airbag control module fault. I read the coolant temp as one of my usual check in all my VW purchase and realised it’s on the high side of 96 degrees celcius at idle, usually it should be at 88-89 degrees celcius. What could be the issue? No external coolant leaks found and the coolant reservoir is around the max mark. I suspect it could be just bad thermostat or a partially chocked radiator but it could be a bigger problem relating to a previous over heating issue! Any advice on how to troubleshoot this using vagcom? Thanks in advance guys.
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 6 лет назад
From my experience 96 at idle is not bad at all. I'd watch the temp and see if the fans come on.
@phasehonda
@phasehonda 6 лет назад
HumbleMechanic it’s because the water temp on my Golf is around 89 at idle. Since this way from day 1. Yes that’s a good idea, will check the fan cycle and see how the temp fluctuates. Any idea if there are more than 1 coolant thermostat on the Tiguan’s 2.0TSI? I am prepared to change the water pump cum thermostat In advance as a precaution move. Going to keep this SUV for at least another 5 years. Stage 3 is in the pipeline too.

🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ve had problems with my Tiguan, I’ve had to change the big fan in the front, I’ve had to replace the hose with the entire system of the coolant (he mentioned this) and now I have engine leaking (this might ve expensive🤦🏻‍♀️) the sunroof. So, I can help you with sunroof, you need to buy a plastic small tube and insert it in the holes in the front of the sunroof. This will help unclog them, the water should be coming out the front tires. You need to buy a tube with diameter that will fit in the holes, and buy about 15ft length. I just did this. Know I have to figure out how to get the water stains out from the interior.

+erica7991 you should get a newer model year and definitely less than 80,000 miles. In the ~5 years I had one, we had just about all of these. I'm pretty sure the only reason we didn't have a sunroof leak is because we didn't have a sunroof. I just about lit it on fire when our tensioner went out. Luckily no catastrophic damage (or I would have for sure). Also lucky our RMS hadn't blown. New owner is probably dealing with that now or already did.

I've changed a few of those sun roofs (50-100's), and in most cases the leak was where the frame is glued together in the front corners. Very common problem on the diesel tiguans (cbab engine) is the turbo regulator, causing a vacuum leak.

2013 Tiguan SEL, LEATHER ehated seats, had air noise on sun roof, rubber gasket was distorted, reposition it, no more noise, had none of any problems, oh, the gas lock solenoid got dirty and would stick, , couldn't open gas flap, but got it popped open, no damage to door, dealer had the solenoid in stock, I asked, happens more than once, he jokes, that's why we have them in stock..it's a small motor, not much power, so slight debris on shaft kills it, easy to replace, I did it myself one screw under rubber outside, reaching in between trunk rug, and quarter panel to push wire and grommet in, was the hardest part, not bad, connect wire, works great

Does this car have dry dual clutch automatic type issues like you hear about with Fords. She never got any kind of failure light indications. Thanks for all your great videos. We love Tiguans!
