Do you know who were the most important military leaders who died during World War II? Do you know what was behind each of their deaths? This was a conflict of such magnitude and intensity that it could not spare important leaders and marshals from death, as had been the custom in previous conflicts, and continues to be today. In today's show, we're going to look at the end of the 5 most famous German field marshals who didn't live to see the end of the conflict. These are neither more nor less than Walter Model, von Kluge, von Bock, von Reichenau, and finally the legendary Erwin Rommel.

Fun fact, Von Bock had a nickname "der sterber" the dier. Due to continuos speeches about the glory of falling in battle for the fatherland. He was the only German Marshal who died from enemy fire .

MODEL WAS CRITICIZED FOR BEING VERY HARSH ON JUNIOR OFFICERS BUT VERY MUCH A FATHER FIGURE TO THE ENLISTED MEN. Considering what was the goal they were fighting for which was the conquest of lands inhabited by Slavic people's, starve ten's of millions of them and the enslavement of the balance, I need to remind myself of this whenever I start to feel too much sympathy for people who were in the process of murdering their way across Central Europe. I know that there were a great many conscripts, but still in all they did some awful deeds. Without the "clean Wehrmacht" the Einsatzgruppen would not have been able to kill as many poot souls as they did by supplying them both and with fresh victims as they conquered more territory.

In 1940 he was responsible for the execution of at least 50 French POWs at Quesnoy, If he had not got involved in the July 20th plot there is a very good chance Rommel would have been in the dock at Nurenberg.

Although Reichenau was an ardent Nazi, he was not one of Hitler's favourites. One can only wonder how different the Stalingrad campaign would have turned out if he had remained in charge of 6th Army rather than Paulus.

An interesting fact about von Reichenau: he was, as you said, an ardent Nazi. But his wife was an ardent Anti- Nazi and was supporting Jews in Berlin by organizing hide outs, getting food and fake IDs, etc. . She married one of them after the war. Von Reichenau knew about all of this and his only reaction towards his wife was: If you get caught not even I can help you.

@@Ben_Sahar I will quote Guderian, from Panzer Leader regarding speeches given by Goering, Goebbels and Hitler in November 1940: 'In the speeches of the three persons mentioned above, an almost identical train of thought was apparent, as follows..."the Party cannot place unconditional trust in the good faith of the army generals". '...as the allegations were directed primarily against the commander in chief of the army...the proper course was to approach Hitler from some other angle in order to urge him to withdraw these unjustified accusations. General von Rundstedt was unwilling to take any further action in the matter. in the next few days i visited a number of senior generals in an attempt to urge them to do something, but in vain. The last one I saw was Col Gen von Reichenau, whose good standing with Hitler and the party was well known. Reichenau informed me to my surprise that on the contrary, his relations with Hitler were anything but good, that he had in fact had serious quarrels with him. He sent a signal to the Chancellery, requesting an interview for me, and the next day I received an order to report to Hitler in Berlin.' 'Hitler listened with great seriousness to all I had to say. When I had finished he replied brusquely: " It's a question of (replacing) the commander in chief of the army...whom do you suggest?" I had thought up a whole list of general officers, who in my opinion were capable of filling that difficult appointment. I mentioned first Col Gen von Reichenau. Hitler refused this suggestion with the words: "Quite out of the question". His expression was unusually disagreeable as he said this, and I realised that Reichenau had in no way been exaggerating during our conversation when he described his relations with Hitler as bad.'
@johnjarpe9055
@johnjarpe9055 Год назад
Von Reichenau was a Fucking monster. One of his subordinates was commanded by Paul Blobel to shoot and kill Eighty children ages one month to age Seven. Their parents were already dead but some pastors had approached him to point out that the slaughter was imminent. He appealed to Von Reichenau who replied that the policy was clear and that he should not have even written his appeal. So they found a local militia, got them so drunk that had to fire five or six times into the children. The Sixth Army murdered it's way across the Soviet Union and faced justice at Stalingrad.

As for Kursk battle: when we say "Army Group South" - we mean Manstein, army group commander. His immeduate subordinate - 4th Panzer Army commander Generaloberst Hoth is much less famous. By the way, Hoth is fully absent in soviet movie series Liberation - the episode about Kursk. Now it's funny seeing this movie when Army Group Commander gives direct orders to Panzer Divisions commanders leaving aside 4th Panzer Army commander, and 2nd SS Panzer Corps commander General Hausser and 48th Panzer Corps commander General Knobelsdorf. But when we say "Army Group Centre" at Kursk - we mean Model, 9th Army Commander! And not Kluge!. Out of all German Field Marshals only two were fanatical Nazis: Reichenau and Model. The other ones were typical German officers, maybe List was slightly aside for his absolute callousness to civilian population during the siege of Leningrad.

Intresting how many of these people were attacked by airplane in Germany. Tells something how big the allies air superiority was.

They were the instrument of that monster Hitler and knew fully well what was going to happen after they invaded. There were mobile death squads called einsatzgruppen and others that summarily executed all undesirables and there were lots of them. All the field marshalls knew this and at the very least turned a blind eye to it or worse. To a far lesser extent this happened when they invaded West but there was no fooling around. And in WW1 it was similar. So understand all this. There was extremely tight discipline in the German army to and up to 65000 German troops were executed for desertion and violations of the rules.

I’ve studied WWII since I was 7 years old. That’s 57 years. During the high times as German armies advanced these Field Marshals received gifts of looted land, stolen artworks and vast sums of money. Some refused these, very few of course. It’s hard to be saddened by their demise. Had Model led a charge with his men, or Von Reichenau helped protect civilians from executions, or Rommel act sooner I might have sympathy. Instead they played prima Donna for the press and propped up the most evil and corrupt regime in German history. I’d much rather hear about lower ranking Germans who fought with honor and humanity. I say that knowing that Rommel fought with such honor. He failed to act: an omission that cannot be overlooked.

Very good analysis ..while some Of these were good soldiers …they had no moral courage …and rode the career carousel into wheels came off the Wehrmacht wheel and only then started to reconsider their attitudes to Hitler

A bába taky pořád není mrtvá, tím jste taky vyhrožovali :D Jste k smíchu... Za pár minut vystupují na Vypichu, můžete mě oddělat tam... Že čekám.

Ehmm, a little error in the speak. Kluge did commit suicide on 19th og august, not july, which would be VERY strange, that he should commit suicide for being a plot, that took place the day after his suicide. ;)

It was horrendous how these hero’s were treated especially the Desert Fox. He was brilliant and so iconic. He was one of the best Commanders in WW11 and then in the end had to commit suicide to save his family. Tragic so tragic. May these brave men who gave up everything for their country be remembered. May they RIP. Salute and Respect
