The (mental) health benefits of motorcycling can be summed up in just 10 words: "4 wheels move the body, 2 wheels move the soul"

Keep on droning on! A well put together and detailed set of 5 reasons. Unfortunately as motorcycling is a niche activity the car driving politicians like the general public will always have a negative view of it. In Spain where nearly every young person starts out riding a scooter or motorbike the attitude is different.

Very well documented. I wish govt make motorcycling a bit less complicated and expensive. They don’t see any logics , all they want is money in form of vehicle tax and complicated riding tests.

Here in the Colonies, ( Canada As it were ), we pay for parking our Bikes, and lane splitting is Illegal, ( this one I’m ok with, Car drivers here are horrible and would squish you and keep going, guaranteed ). BUT, we have such wide open spaces that we have a Plethora of long travel choices. And they routes are adjustable to which type of road you wish to get there. This Friday I’m heading out on my Interceptor with a riding Buddy to go from Vancouver to a semi Desert area to camp. The wind, the wide field of vision, and experience on a Bike is much more Tactile on the system and your Soul. ( that’s me agreeing with everything you said ). Keep the videos coming, you help keep me going. Thanks

Referring to reason number 4. I feel at one with the world, the weather and the environment. I feel free. I've been on two wheels for over 30 years. I ride 365 days a years unless there's a typhoon.Although I once rode in the eye of the typhoon and was nearly home when I was hit by 200 MPH winds....The second half of a super typhoon . I was swept up suddenly and flew along at an insane speed before losing control and thrown off. Luckily no physical damage to speak of !I live in a part of East Asia that gets these monsters nearly every year. But I digress. The weather is warm enough to ride nearly everyday and I do. I don't want to drive a car.I haven't driven a car in 3 decades. My wife drives our car. We have lots of mountains and I have ridden over many of them on a 125cc motorcycle. Freedom. I agree with all your reasons ,speed, parking, affordability and fuel economy. I spend a pittance on petrol for my 125. My wife's Toyota is another story...

Good to see you back. I have been riding for >40 years, and have concluded that riding a bike keeps you young ...unless it kills you first. On fuel consumption, my BMW R1200RT and K1300S both give me 58 mpg on a run ridden spiritedly within the speed limit. But I am only 10st 12lb which might have something to do with it. I’ll be interested to see what I get from the Royal Enfield Classic I am expecting to be delivered at the end of the month. Hankered after one for years and watching your vids pushed me over the edge!

I’d agree on the windscreen, with the exception of super long rides. I’m on my second 3000 mile trip within a couple of months on my T120 and although i agree that it gives you a workout, a 7-10 hour workout on some days is a bit much. I’m looking at larger screens (larger than a Dart) that are removable, so I can use it on these super long trips, but otherwise ride it naked.

Very good Stuart. Registration (Road Tax) for my 2003 Bonneville 790, which is included in the 600 cc and up category, costs $520 (263 Pounds) yearly! Having had a Covid vax mandate-induced burnout last year the bike has been an absolute Godsend and a big part of my mental health recovery. I have ridden here and in the UK for forty years and for me nothing can beat riding for all the reasons you spoke of and for so many other ones as well. Keep up the wonderful videos ! Ride safe. Just thinking about if we all ride motorcycles then local councils would have to charge for parking as they rely heavily on the parking tax to top up their extravagant and reckless spending. I am beginning to see more places charging for motorcycle parking and notices that say all vehicles must be parked in a bay and displaying a ticket. The answer of course is not to ride into towns and just stick to the B roads which is where us motorcyclists are happiest. Thanks for the video. Regards John

I think your physical health benefits through riding a motorcycle were somewhat tenuous, but not being a doctor I do have any facts to back this up. However I’ll agree with you regarding mental health for two reasons. One is that unlike car driving you can not ride for very long with your brain in neutral. You have to think about what you are doing. So riding a bike keeps your brain active which is a good thing in its own right. Another is that you receive positive rewards when you make progress and just as importantly the buzz from the excitement of just riding. As for your comments regarding motorcycles having a reduced environmental impact I totally agree. Government policy is based on a condition (potential number of seats being occupied) that is rarely met therefore the policy is flawed. If that was a condition the we should all fly in Boeing 787’s: Their economy per seat per mile is similar to your Bullet, but at 500 mph. They also require little in the way of infrastructure. But I digress. As you say, there are many environmental benefits to society from motorcycle usage. Another that come to mind is that motorcyles do less damage to the fabric of the road. Great video as ever. Thanks.

Very true, the Honda 125f gives 160mpg, my little trail bike gives me 120 odd. Saw a 95cc bike in India that gave 260mpg (if I remember correctly). When in driving I go onto auto pilot a lot and miss out so much. On a bike you really get to experience so much more! Great video and also a no 6. When traveling in a group of friends you are really together and not in a queue of cars. It becomes about the journey and not the destination. Bikers often look out for everyone on the road and you would never see a car driver stop to help!

I agree with you in a lot of reasons there. Also In Austria, when you park with a motorcycle, it is for free, as long as you don't need to take a barricade ticket to open the exit.

The motorcycle combination is the best vehicle for transporting children & women!! It is very hard for the rider to hear any whinging coming from the sidecar passenger(s). If rider can somehow still hear the whinging from the sidecar, this can be remedied by simply stopping the bike, removing the silencer(s), restarting the engine and continuing the journey in whinge free blissfulness.

Wise words once again. I've been riding naked bikes since -83 and I can easily ride for hours in high speeds, like 140km/h, on motorways. And when I watch reviews, say on YT, they always talk about windprotection and why they can't ride the bike so fast for so long. So there's probably something about it. Yep, all they talk about is electric. It's populistic and onesided. Thank you for the film and thoughts mr Fillingham.

Good Morning .. Good points raised and well put 👍 .. thank you 😊. I have always believed that 'Exposure to the Elements' .. Fresh Air, Weather in all it's Forms (Sunshine, Rain, Wind, etc) serves to Strengthen the Body and the Immune System. Cosseted for extended periods in 'Environmentally Controlled 'Cocoons' .. be it our Homes, Motor Vehicles, Parking Garages, Shopping Centres and such are not necessarily beneficial. During inclement weather, one can leave home, go shopping and return, lightly dressed without even having to don or take with, protective weather clothing (whether this is wise or not is another story .. but people do it). As a youngster, I can remember often coming home 'soaked' from being 'caught out there' and never 'getting sick' as a result thereof. Until next time .. take care .. be safe ..

I used to squeeze 90 to 95 mpg off my 2009 Classic fitted with a 17 L (about 3,75 Imp gall.) provided I keep a leisurely 55/60 mph speed, which was my usual cruising speed, by the way. The range of that bike was phenomenal, 550 km or about 330-340 miles. I accomodated myself to that kind of legs when I was travelling on my holidays. Plenty of time to see the landscape.

If only someone making the tax rules were to see this video, and it make a difference. I once wrote to the DOT about road tax charges, my bike at the time displayed the co2 readings on the log book, they were much lower than a smart car, which paid zero, there answer was not all bikes have a co2 reading, so the system would remain the same for now. Maybe MAG should get involved? Keep up the good work.

Yes, we do too wear Fitbit and looks like motorcycling burns lot of fat... 120minutes riding (non-city, just curvy roads, countryside), 263cals at average heart rate of 81bpm, another example 215 minutes ride, 470 cals average heart rate 87bpm... 100% fat burn. Not so bad. And I'm 63 so not so much haste in there. As comparison mowing lawn for 45 minutes was 183cals and average heart rate was 98bpm... 77% was fat burn. Early in the summer heart rate is higher - it might be because of the excitement and feel of the lost skill to ride the motorcycle (long winter season with no riding).

Very wise words about the eco value of Motorcycle riding, yes it would be nice if road tax was forgotten about when it comes to small capacity bikes. But when this or any government can make a quid or two with ease out of road tax, they are reluctant to change. As with the ULEZ it is here to make money rather than give it away.

Thanks for that point of view SF Apart from the sheer fun imo it makes everyone who does ride a bike far better car drives . Modern cars insulate the occupants so much that road conditions ect are almost a video game . To a certain extent i have found full face helmets have a similar effect at least more than when I wore no helmet and just a pair of stadium goggles prior to the law change. Closest fun I've had on more than two wheels was a Morgan 3 wheeler I hired with the 2 litre Harley replacement S&S big vee twin. No skid lid, no doors no roof and a screen the size of a visor. Ok it didn't lean but being totally analogue no power steering or abs power assisted brakes it was still back to basics fun. Currently I'm riding a littles Honda PCX125 , 115mpg and about as non polluting as you can get with a suck squeeze bang vehicle. They would not have to build new roads if fewer cars were on them and more bikes. Happy riding Stu.👍

Nice watching you negotiating the roads in Holderness. We did the same thing in 2018 when we ventured out of Australia for a two months holiday in the UK. We B&B'd in Beverley, and I bought a little Citroen Pluriel for some open top sunshine. I sold it on to our longtime friend Alan, who lives in Thorngumbald, and we can use it if we ever return, which is looking unlikely. Your arguments are correct in favour of riding a motorcycle. But as you also rightly mentioned that there are a lot of people who prefer cars actually drive alone which adds up to a lot of pollution! I too have a car, but I rarely drive it and mostly I take it out when I go out with my mom and dad or have a lot of luggage to carry, but then again it’s about twice or thrice a month. People are aware about the benefits of riding over driving but they do not realise the same. They just need the comfort of sitting behind raised glass with the AC on!

Windscreens. As a cyclist (the kind with pedals) every new cyclist immediately insists that they need a new saddle due to the brutal irritation of their sit bones. The illusion that the seat is at fault is further supported by the phenomenon whereby the pain diminishes at some point in the future after a new saddle is purchased. Season after season I have learned that the saddle is normally not the problem. You just have to condition that butt. You have to wonder how much of the economy relies on correlation fallacies.

Sounds like a list published by a motor cycle sales retailer looking to improve their sales figures. I would agree the freedom of riding a bike with the wind rushing by and being able to avoid some traffic pile ups is very rewarding. As a young man I would ride into the centre of London from Harrow in the evening just for the hell of it. I actually enjoyed it, but the thought of taking a car on a similar route would fill me with dread.

Another missed advantage of riding a motorcycle in the UK & NI: FREE parking under the 1929 motorcycle parking act. It is an offence to charge a parking fee for a moped, motor scooter, motorcycle, motor tricycle, quadracycle or motorcycle sidecar combination except: (a) As part of an admission fee to a venue or event. Enjoyed this Stuart. I particularly agree with the "mental" benefits of riding a motorcycle. Something I have been doing for sixty years now. By the way the tax on my Mash Roadstar 400cc is £45.

Really like the way you called motorcycling 'primitive' - it's definitely more engaging. As someone who will only drive a manual transmission car, and as I really detest how much automation is taking over cars, motorcycles are one of the last ways to get around where you really still have to do everything yourself. My peers all think I'm nuts - I'm mid-30s, and I don't think my generation was raised as much on car/motorcycle culture... they prefer technology to such a degree that the idea of a self-driving car seems to make most of them giddy (whereas the idea makes me feel ill). Mind you, the electrics on my DMC-12 DeLorean (good old Lucas) tend to throw hissy fits, so maybe they get the last laugh some days - but I have more fun in my car or on my Triumph, I'm sure of it. Great video.

Nice Video. Two Wheeler are an absolute necessity on the chaotic roads of India. Would like to hear something around Wheel Alignment on bikes.

Could be bollux but I remember reading that a professional chess player burns 6000 calories a day. So concentrating while riding may increase calorie consumption.

Yes "flying", but not flying and I thought it was only me that feels that. Motorcycling is good for my mental well being and I have never ended a ride feeling bad.

I think the reference to insulin sensitivty is the same sort of effect you get from weight training , the benefits last much longer than the session itself , in that insulin continues to be used for hours after replacing the glycogen used from the muscles excercised , or something like that - so motorcycling is akin to weight training ! Point 6) Motorcycling keeps your bowels open- sometimes when you least expect it.

You do very useful video-rides full of interesting personal opinion ideas that share my observation point of view. That one today becomes brilliant. Thank you again. ...gasS! From an daily 1/8L rider that rodea 30 to 70 miles a day✌😎

Motorcycle parking & payment; try Yorkshire and as I found last weekend Bakewell in Derbyshire. Motorcycles pay the same as cars. But car drivers tell you to piss off even though you as a motorcyclist have paid exactly the same fee.

It's not that I need any reasons to ride my motorcycle but it's like a therapy for me it helps me to take my mind off from hustle and bustle of the day

Just an FYI, Salford Quays doesn't have free motorcycle parking anywhere. Between that and London now introducing an emissions charge on bikes just make me think I'll avoid cities on my bikes as much as possible. Which is a shame as most of my time is spent in those two lol

You mention riding a bike is like flying without actually flying. You;d be surprised how many pilots also ride motorbikes. A light aircraft is a three dimensional motorbike - you should try it Stuart

Some years ago, I saw a 'plate sticker' that said "Officer, I'm not riding fast, I'm flying low!" I think it should be a mandatory decal declaration on all Hayabusas! :-D

Not only do we have to pay for parking a motorcycle where I live (🇨🇦), it's illegal for two bikes to share a standard-sized car spot. That'll get both bikes a ticket regardless of the fact that one of them paid for the privilege of using the spot. There are dedicated motorcycle spots in some parking lots, but it's the same hourly cost for a bike spot as it is for a car spot. Motorcycles just don't rate here....
