when I saw that thinly hatted man walking to the most beautiful rearrangement of his own theme, I had difficulty breathing. here's my top 5 wishes for the new Professor Layton game.
I think everyone who's a fan of the series had the exact same level of excitement when they showed it on screen. Being in literal disbelief, shock, awe, joy, pure bliss and excitement that the professor is finally making his return.
Yes, as a long time Professor Layton fan I literally couldn't hold the scream of shock when I recognized Professor Layton there. I've never ever been more excited for a game before. It's great to see such a great series that were presumed dead make a comeback.
I started a week ago the animated series of katrielle (nit really a fan if her but better than nothing) and i just saw the trailer and im crying for half an hour now I was 4 when the first game was released ans just woke my mom up because of the new game (where i live its 1am whoups)
I am so glad I was home alone when watching the direct, because I was screaming so loud when I saw the professor it sounded like someone was trying to kill me.
Even before I saw the wallpaper with Luke my bet was on post Lost/Unwound Future: - Luke has gone to America - America was known as 'The New World' - The New World of Steam is America
Since Luke shows up in the wallpaper on the website, and he looks older, I think it's set after Lost Future, where Luke went to America. After all, it's called New World of Steam, new world is a way of saying America In any case, I'm so excited for it and I really hope it's gonna be better than LMJ, the steampunk look is promising!
This was the most unexpected and hype reveal EASILY like wth AND the graphics style is so sexy I liked how the 3ds games look but these shots had more depth and better color balance
I think we all collectively have been screaming and crying, Voyan 😂 The art style looked really good to me! (I didn't like the 3D on the 3DS but that was likely due to the hardware limitations making it look a bit janky🥲 so hopeful for this time!) Whatever we get, I'll be happy. I hope Level 5 see the reaction this got and realise this is 100% a franchise worth rebooting 🥰
My immediate thought after seeing the teaser and thinking about when this takes place was: “if this takes place after Unwound Future, PLEASE throw Flora a bone, Level 5.”
I LITERALLY STUMBLED UPON YOUR RETROSPECTIVES AND FELT INCREDIBLY NOSTALGIC AGAIN- WONDERING IF HE'LL EVER COME BACK . I COULDNT BELIEVE MY EYES WHEN MY FRIEND SENT ME THE NEWS YEEPEE
1. Luke is confirmed to be in the game, he appears in the official wallpaper you can get on the game's website! But I definitely hope they give Flora some love, I think she could add some freshness to the franchise if they give her an actual character personality and development. I also hope this is a sequel to Lost Future. 2. I'm confident that Level-5 has upgraded themselves and will give a fun play mode that is enjoyable both ways. 3. The artstyle looks SO good, the 3D looks like their 2D models and not too round like the 3ds games so I think it will be the best game in terms of graphics for sure. Even the Katrielle one had a great artstyle (and music!) like the original games, I think that's one of the franchise's biggest strenghts and they always do well in this aspect 4. Yeah puzzles are what worry me the most after Lady Layton, also the fact that the story doesn't impact like the original games did. However, they had many years to see what to do with the saga. This will indeed be a CRUCIAL moment for the Layton series, so I hope the game becomes popular and praised so that we get more incredible titles from our Professor... Switch has revived a lot of franchises and has also given long-time franchises their best selling games ever so why not!? 5. Same! I want to feel the nostalgia that Layton games always have (Katrielle's game had some, even though that was like the game's only reason to be decent). However, I hope they include a lot of new functions: exploration could be more dynamic, minigames could be more replayable (in the other games they were only played once), some post-game contents (even dlcs would be interesting), etc
mystery journey, i found was more hurt by its story presentation, since the stories had no time to develop much long as its the origional one big mystery I am fairly confident
I think the aspect I'm most worried about is how the switch will handle a puzzle game, which has been so dependent on stylus based touch screens before. I think I've always been a bit anxious about this since the switch was first shown. It's lack of a DS/WiiU like touchscreen and its exclusively single screen play always made me think a Layton game would struggle. So hopefully the developers will make a way to have the puzzles work without awkward controls.
I’m quite new to the Layton community, having found it just a week ago and was charmed instantly by the art style, music, and everyone’s wonderful little stories about their experiences with the games. So glad to have discovered this just as a brand new game gets announced!! Looking forward to all this brings!
I enjoyed the Layton mysteries game, but it did suffer from a bit of rush-to-market. But THIS?! I’m in. Also, maybe this would be AFTER unwound future, and either he goes solo, has Flora come with, or (in a sitcomesque turn) is how we meet Katrielle’s mother. Not as an assistant-to-lovers arc, but in an enemies-to-lovers arc (in as much as Layton would HAVE an enemy).
UWF SPOILERS im sure somebodys already said this, but luke will be in it! he's in the official art/wallpapers you get from solving the puzzle on the website, and his outfit places him as a slightly older version of UWF luke :)) given this and the title of the game ("new world") i seriously think that this is going to be a continuation of UWF where we investigate the mystery in a steampunk/industrial revolution-era america that luke talks about in his letter. that could mean so much for the series character-wise, as we havent had a game released after the prequels that takes place around the time of the main trilogy, so they absolutely have an opportunity to bring characters from both trilogies back (descole would be the cherry on top, personally)
Luke has already been announced on the teaser website as far as I know. Theres an artwork hes on and they say "brand new adventure with Layton and Luke"
My prayers have been answered, my skin has been blessed and my day is happy. I kept my breath held the whole time out of fear of something negative but I can safely say I am breathing normally
I'm quite saddened by the Katrielle diss, cause I love the characters of this time period, including her (I mean she's Alena from DQIV with muscles swapped out for a brain, what's not to love) and I enjoyed the game quite a bit ^^' But yeah I'm very curious how's that gonna look, even if I like the 2D art more than the 3D cutscenes. I hoped for a port of the prequel trilogy, but a new sequel is nice too! Especially possibly the one that was teased in Unwound all those years ago...
I think that in order to "grow up" and reach its full potential the series should do 2 things: 1. MAKE THE PLAYER AN ACTIVE DETECTIVE: in all games there is a mystery to solve, but the investigation it's not led by the player. It's led by the characters explicitly saying "We should go here now/ we should go talk to this guy now", with the player merely being forced to follow their instructions. The games are fun because of the puzzes, but they could be even more memorable and engaging by leaving the player in charge of the investigation: structure and tell the story in a way that the player is challenged to follow the clues and decide for themselves where to go and what to do next. 2. MAKE PUZZLES CONTEXTUAL: this is hard but IT CAN BE DONE, and the developers did it succesfully numerous times. Instead of having random dudes going to you and asking you to solve a random riddle, they should focus on those puzzles that make sense contextually to the environment and the characters. Like those puzzles were Luke had to organize his stuff to fit inside the suitcase: puzzles that make sense in a semi-realistic way in regards to the plot and setting. This would make the games feel more grounded and the setting more lived in while still being gamey.
I'm optimistically hopeful about this game. A small part of me is also hoping that this game will somehow retcon Katrielle, I mean that's what they basically did with the "son of Layton spin-off" and maybe give more screen time to Flora.
Mystery Room hasnt been retconned, if anything theyre keeping him for the long run. Alfendi and Lucy show up at the end of the Lady Layton anime and the game got a web manga adaptation, so I wouldnt be surprised if they explain his existence soon
I think that the fact that this is a new game specifically for Switch can be both a strength (familiar but fresh) and a solution to the worry of puzzle controls. Because its a new game, the puzzles can be made specifically for the control scheme they include. Written solutions can take advantage of the keyboard now, perhaps drawing solutions can have like a guide grid to snap between. Motion controls are also possible to include, though I hope they do include an alternative way. A slide puzzle I feel could be done well with controllers by having a select-deselect button and then a cursor that snaps between pieces. There's quite a lot of good ways I can think of adapting the usual puzzle methods, and perhaps we'll see unusual and unique methods that the switch could only do. (Remember the IR Camera in the joycons? That can read hand gestures? It could make for an interesting bonus puzzle. Rumble features are also new to the Layton series.)
Glad I wasn't the only one screaming about the Professor Layton news! Fully agree with all these hopes. Don't know about Flora doing anything, but there was official desktop wallpaper that released and it shows Luke next to Layton, so perhaps the boys really are back in town!
i never played the professor layton games but i did recognize the guy, and was like i want to play this for some reason so i am very exited for this game
Okay, so this is epic... but we'll have to take our lessons from our dear professor and be patient and let them show us that the series is ready to go on again with a game as great as the previous ones...
Level 5 just showed a new trailer. New game is set after Unwound Future, it takes place in America and Luke is indeed back and now called Detective Luke.
The touch screen is a massive thing for me and it's a personal reason; my mother LOVES PL, she's played them all (bar Katrielle) like 5 times each or more because she loves them so much but I'm not sure if she will be able to adapt to using my Switch for this. The touch screen/stylus was what she likes about them because it's easy for her to use and she just struggles using consoles. Either way she is still very excited, I'll probably just have to basically hold her hand and walk her through being able to use the console properly so she can play 😄
the wallpaper we get from solving the puzzle on the website features luke, so it's confirmed to be a layton/luke pair game!! from the luke on the wallpaper, it's almost certain that it will take place before katrielle shows up, but whether it happens after the original trilogy or before it is still a bit vague
@@minminzemi3844 I meant her character arc and living up to her father. She had to prove herself to both herself AND the audience, and the anime made me like her even more. Plus, she's incredibly charming in my opinion, but to each their own.
I want katrielle to have a better structured game, like katrielle but the shorter mysteries did not have the time they needed. even with luke and layton mystery journey would be lackluster in comparision
I think what put people off with the 3D style in MM and AL- although I don't really know exactly- was the thick black outlines needed to distinguish the characters on such a small screen. The new 3D art style almost feels like they simply made flat drawings 3D- gave them some depth while still keeping the typical 2D drawn style's charm
beyond all the other mentioned points, which i of course 100% agree with, i really am curious about the release date the direct was kinda advertised to completely revolve around games releasing within like the first half of 2023 or close to that so i wonder wether that is gonna apply to layton, or if it was just meant to be there as a cherry on top for the fantasy life trailer i personally hope it is gonna take as much time as they need it to i've waited so long already, i'd rather wait 2, 3 or even more years for a new layton game that is genuinely good and will stick in my mind for years to come like 1-6 and vspw did, than to just get a cheap fanservice cashgrab because if nothing else, i have to give credit where credit is due: the "bad" layton games went with new protags where they couldve been lazy slot ins, because they knew that the way they approached it, they could not improve upon what was already there, only weaken it at least i hope that's why they did it the 2 trilogies where very well contained with layton's and luke's journey together coming to a very much reasonable conclusion at the end of the first trilogy, and the second trilogy beginning with their journey and then looping into the first trilogy again and i am still incredibly thankful that the newer games did not ruin that self-contained completeness in a way that they very much woul've been able to
Level 5 kicked down the door of the direct with DECAPOLICE, Fantasy Life i, and Professor Layton and I will never stop being excited. Fantasy Life is still one of my most treasured 3DS games and when they announced the new one I cried. I never dreamed we’d see another after the mobile title in japan & with level 5 shutting down NA Operations.
I feel that it might be open area based where they are going. Like with Pokemon Legends Arceus. So we might see Layton walking around or maybe its gonna be used for when you walk to a new area.
i saw it at 8am and almost screamed like AAAAAAHHH THE AWE THE SHEER SURPRISE SHOCK JOY AND ELATION???? anyways praying circle and also brb gonna replay all of them
I was actually crying. I can’t believe layton is finally coming back! Do you guys think it will launch in 2023 since it was shown in this direct? I’m really hopeful that we will be playing this game this year
luke is going to be in the game you can see him in a picture withthe professor on the official page of professor layton, I think the game will be a direct sequel to the lost future
Luke Triton appears on a promotional artwork with his classic design and looking a bit older, so this proves will be in the game and that this happens after Lost Future.
Things that I am excited about: 1) the mystery does not seem to be related to ancient civilizations, so the argument will be more like the first trilogy. 2) It is a "New" world, so maybe Layton goes to visit Luke wherever he is? 3) steampunk world means more mechas. That has been one of the staples, so cheers to that. I would love the game to have some music-related puzzles or more ace attorney-like sections (like the one in Miracle Mask when deducing the miracles for the first time). In any case, I just want a more serious game than Katrielle's goof and fun approach with dope music.
t's definitely post-Unwound Future. Luke has a bowtie, which he also sports in the future in the Katrielle anime. And "New World" implies that Layton is visiting Luke in the Americas, where Luke left at the end of that game :)
Hope #7: The soundtrack The soundtrack for Professor Layton saved my life! When I was younger I would listen to the title music of Azran Legacy until my 2DS died! It was THAT good! All of the Layton games had amazing soundtracks were phenomenal and I hope this game lives up to it!
Nintendo confirmed all games in the direct will come in the first part of the year. So with that we can confirm that the Layton game will prob come around March-August.
I have a theory (with no serious evidence because we have nothing at this point) about this game. This "New World of Steam" has similarities with London. The bus, the architecture, and who knows what else ? So what if Clive came out of prison after all these years, and turned his underground Future London into this Steam London ? That would explain the similarities with London, since Future London was obviously based on London. And even though a lot has changed, the buildings, the aesthetic, the layout, and all that are all still similar to London's. This place has a very Steampunk vibe, and they give me the same vibe as all the Time Machines in Unbound Future. Maybe just a coincidence though. But what do you think of this theory ?
I personally think that this city would be a brand new city instead of a modified Future London. It can't play too much in the future as well, because Luke looks pretty much the same in the official wallpaper from the website. So my theory is that Luke, who moves away at the end of Unwound Future, hears from the Steam City in his new hometown and writes Layton a letter to investigate it with him together. This would be the letter Laytons gets with his last puzzle in Unwound Future.
@@julienradke8653 Ah I didn't know about the wallpaper. Well your idea works too. After all, Layton has a history with first puzzle letters at this point ^^'
I believe the way the series should evolve is by having the series ditch point and click for something 1st or more likely 3rd person. Ooh, what if puzzles were visible in the world instead of in a separate space?
Considering Azran legacy and I also think LMJ released world wide at the same time I am sure they will have the same release date for the entire world for this one too.
i love how everyone is just crying and screaming, because SAME!! i think the game will take place post lost future because luke's costume (the one we see in the wallpapers) seems to be a "grown up" version of his original trilogy outfit! the 3d masks look so GOOD already, layton actually looked like layton (unlike in MM, in my opinion), but i hope the cutscenes will remain in 2d like they were in the other games anyway i hope for a late 2023/early 2024 release but let's not raise our hopes to much lol great video, can't wait for your lost future review!!
I know it won't happen, but surely I can't be the only one wishing for Alfendi to be in this ? Like, his backstory leading to being adopted by best-absentee/neglectful-father-Hershel Layton ? Like the one we got for Flora (and kinda fir Luke I guess)...
There were actually 3 or 4 Level 5 games announced in the direct so they are clearly back. I'm pretty sure they are Nintendo exclusives (at least to begin with) Which suggest a contract with them. Which is good because if they are dragging their heels on a English version Nintendo can hurry them up.
