One boss that wasn't on the list that pisses me off is the Iron Imprisoner from Birth by Sleep. Bastard is super agressive with the attacks, and that stunlock is infuriating. Also, one thing that makes Phantom Aqua extra bs is how she comes after a boss rush, making having to exit out all the more frustrating. I was annoyed at how many think that she was well designed. SHE WASN'T.
"revenge value system makes bosses patterns extremely predictable" i think a nice idea to counter it would be a repeatable pattern of different revenge value on a single boss, e.g counter after 3rd, 1st, 4th, 2nd combo in that order, repeat. The harder the boss the longer the pattern. This would make the bosses less predictable than single revenge value in KH2, and not as random and annoying as those in BBS
I regretted so much saving after beating KHII Sephiroth. I had a lot of trouble with him because I was used to dodging instead of standing my ground to counter (...Air bending instead of Earth bending??)
Here's the thing I like about watching your videos Lily, even tho I don't always agree with what you're saying. You explain your point of view very well, with well thought out arguments, so poeple can understand your opinions. Example being: While I totally agree with you on the fact that Mysterious figure and Zodiac Aqua can go die in a hole, I dissagree with Lingering Will, but that's mostly because I like the fight, because I understand what you say about the fight being a trade of combos more than a real fight where you and the enemy tries to kill each other simultaneously and yet, that's something I like about the fight. I think one of the advantages of making multiple different games across every platform under the Nintendo sun is that you can find at least ONE superboss that's your type of boss if you try every game. My favorite boss from any kingdom hearts game is Data Roxas from KH2(I know it's a based choice, but I LIKE IT-) but even then, most of my top 10 is from the Re/Mind DLC for KH3 which is hard as balls but still a very fun challenge for me at least. I know those aren't everyone's cup of tea, but it doesn't mean that the people that dislike them are wrong to think that just like it's okay to like them. (Except if anyone hates the non-data Roxas fight, that fight is god-like and the best fight in the entire franchise.)
Hmm. So with regard to boss design, I break down AI into three components -- Determinism, Randomness, and Reactivity. I feel the names are sufficient to explain their purposes, though my apologies if that's not the case -- I will be happy to elaborate. I also break down difficulty into two types -- Knowledge-based and Skill-based. Randomness contributes heavily to Skill-based difficulty assuming the boss *can* be reacted to (unlike, for example, Ventus-Vanitas' Sonic Blade, which can cross the battlefield in 10 frames), while Determinism and Reactivity contribute to Knowledge-based difficulty, which is mostly a matter of memorization and pattern recognition. I guess what I don't get is why some part of your metric (which I am curious about in general, and I wish it were delineated more clearly in your video) defines said memorization and pattern recognition (like that found in the Lingering Will boss fight) as an illegitimate form of difficulty. In my model, it fits rather squarely into Knowledge-based difficulty (as do most things in KH). I mean, to some extent, "they're insanely easy after the first time" applies to every boss, doesn't it? It always has for me and I imagine I'm not alone in that. For example, I found a strat that can kill Data Larxene in a single combo from full HP (though admittedly there are stat benchmarks for this), and have used it every time since I found it assuming I'm not at level 1. Speedrunners have an even more efficient one that admittedly I have trouble pulling off.
"Difficulty" is not the factor. The fight has to be fun. Yeah, most bosses can be cheesed in some way, but I don't factor that in at all. This is all about fighting the boss without cheating. A fight like Lingering Will and Zodiac Aqua are not a problem because they're knowledge-based, they're a problem because they're completely static and boring with only one solution to every problem. Compare this to Roxas or No Heart which aren't as static and are designed to keep you on your toes and thinking. "Is the fight hard and in what way?" is not a real question. "Is the fight fun and engaging?" is the question you're supposed to be asking. Lingering Will might be a really hard challenge, but that challenge is boring.
After I heard Josh say that Wargoyle is worst boss,I decided to take it with a grain of salt. I can't exactly say anything else because of the fact that I don't have the game myself so I could play it and see how I prefer it.
Is it bad that I like Xemnas in KH1? Like, it's probably because KH1 is my favourite game, but he felt the most rewarding to beat in the entire series. I wasn't just repeating the same things over and over. It might've also just been because I like the combat of 1, idk. Also, LW is so overrated. I love it when the boss fight is invincible for a majority of the fight. I love dying cause of set phase transitions messing up my combo. I also hate that he didn't have any reaction commands. Like, that's one of the key things that sets Kh2 apart from the rest of the series, and the ultimate challenge just doesn't have them? Also, I hate the lasers, the mess up the small combo window you have. Also, some attacks feel almost undodgeable at the start. Like the sheild punch thing. No matter what I try, he always hits me. I could block as soon as the fight starts, and he'd still hit me. He starts way too close to sora. And finally, he's not even going to use all his moves. From my experience, he spams the same few moves selected at the start of the fight. Still not as bad as Yozora omfg. At least LW didn't ruin Toy Story because he just had to be included, but not any of the beloved final fantasy characters. Yeah, KH3 makes me mad.
Yeah although my pick for the worst superboss and others too would be the Unknown (AKA Young Xehanort) from Birth by Sleep and honestly he's just cheaply designed even the diehards who like a good challenging boss fight can agree that the Unknown is just terribly designed and he's the absolute WORST to fight as Terra at least Ventus and Aqua can kinda have a easy time dodging his attacks because of their i-frames on their dodge rolls and cartwheels but Terra man his slide has the worst i-frames despite his slide being sent far compared to Ven and Aqua but still I won't be fighting him again after getting all the steam achievements on BBS I really hope I don't have to do that journey again
Mysterious Figure has the edge over the actual worst superbosses: He's funny. When you die to Limit Cut or Phantom Aqua, it's because you didn't counter in the specific way they want you to. When you die to Mysterious Figure, it's because turned invisible, cloned himself 12 times, and ganged up on you like you walked into the wrong neighbourhood.
