Like you said, the scene where he told the survey corps they were going to die showed how much of a leader he was. A lot of them were new recruits and he had to influence them to make that sacrifice alongside himself. I cried watching that scene.
6:26 Levi: "Are you finally ready to say something? I could've had breakfast during the wait" As if the anime is poking fun at the inner-monologue trope and Erwin's non-reaction to Levi's comment makes this scene even funnier than it probably should be lol.
"Any trainees who join will participate in our excursion beyond the walls, in a month. We expect thirty per cent won't return. In four years, most will be dead. But those who survive will become superior soldiers with a high survival rate. Knowing these discouraging facts, any still willing to risk their lives, remain here. Ask yourself, are you willing to offer your beating heart for humanity?"
Bro that foreshadowing though, in a month thirty percent had been killed by Annie on their expedition and in four years most of the scouts from that time were dead by the attack on Marley
People don’t reference this recruitment speech enough. It was one of the most emotionally charged scenes in AoT. Also the money where he asked “Can you die if you’re ordered to?” And someone screamed “I DON’T WANT TO DIE” even though the person already decided to stick to the survey corps.
I binged snk in 3 days, so I didn't get the opportunity to understand Erwin's character in depth. Even so, I've never cried so much for someone as much as I did for Erwin when he died. So many people still misunderstand him, it's actually so heartbreaking since he seems like the most realistic character in this show to me. He is hands down the best leader, commander and character that I've come to highly respect and love. In Levi's words - "What a Man!" This video was so well done, thank you for this!!
Erwin was such an amazing written character, his entire story line. Even in the end, when he admits he was a liar to himself just to fulfill his duty. Favorite character for sure
I can understand why most people prefer the chapter "Hero" over "charge", because of Levi murdering the beast titan and also Levi is the most loved character in the series. In my opinion, Erwin is the best character I could ever imagine of and seeing him lead them facing death in that chapter just makes me want to be him, because I can´t think of a better decision making that could made me proud of myself, that Erwin did in that battle is the most heroic thing you can do. Also I want to mention that, when all other soldiers thought that was hell, he didn´t hesitate, gave a inspirational and concise speech, and charge into that
10:45 literally lol'd because I was expecting Levi's voice as he responded to Erwin, but your voice synced perfectly with his mouth movements for a few seconds
I like that he mentions Erwin's selflessness, but I also like what others mention about Erwin... His selfishness. The guilt he felt for his father's murder and the desire to prove his dad's theory is the most important thing that makes him an incredible leader. It allowed him to take risks and sending people to their deaths. Erwin makes himself believe that he is doing this for the sake of humanity, and although this is true, the undenying fact is that Erwin did all of this to justify the stubbornness that caused his dad to get murdered.
True that. I'd like to believe that's the big reason of Erwin's complexity. We see him as this leader who will sacrifice and gamble everything for the sake of humanity, but truth is his motivation is the dream he shares with father. He was a slave (reference to Kenny) to his dream not humanity's survival.
Everytime I listen to his final speech, I do the sasageyo pose and am ready to charge into the belly of the beast. Erwin made me wanna charge with him. That's a great leader indeed
My soldiers, rage! My soldiers, scream! My soldiers, fight! I remember seeing Erwin's last speech on Twitter last year and even without having watched 1 episode of AOT, I got chills man. Insane leader
Amazing video. The emotional depth that AoT is what makes it way more investing than any other series out there. Like Erwin immediately being snatched away after a titan after an inspiring speech... It would usually be juxtaposing and may even result in a chuckle from the viewers. But even after being snatched, he continues to urge them. That is a story beat and a half right there. That's how you elevate a character.
I love this video. I'd like to add that in the section where you describe the key factors of "delegation" you didn't outwardly say that TRUST is key. As a creative director, I can tell you from experience that TRUST is the singlehandedly most important factor in delegation.
"Throw your soldiers into positions whence there is no escape, and they will prefer death to flight." -Sun Tsu 13:00 Erwin's suicidal charge towards the beast titan is not only the best scene in the anime, but also fits perfectly with my favorite quote from 'The Art of War.'
Also we don’t talkinkg too much about his sacrifice. He sacrificed his biggest dream, the reason why he was fighting to the end - the truth of the world. He ,,gave up his dreams and died” and that’s so sad. I love him and absolutely respect him.
This video is perfect! It puts Erwin's leadership in perspective, makes him feel more human... which only gives me more goosebumps than ever. See you when this video gets 6m+ views instead of 6k, you more than deserve it.
unrelated, but i loved how you kept the beast titan fight scene in despite having nothing to do with erwin xD its likeyou knew everyone would appreciate a good beast titan fight scene
When my boy floch told off Eren and Mikasa I was rooting for him. I think Isayama really understood how the readers felt and gave them representation/voice through Floch's character. Also Erwin must've realized in some way that Floch was right because he ultimately ditched Armin and Mikasa to play the role of the devil. The very role that Floch wanted Erwin to play.
i watch erwin's seiyuu asked isayama what is the thing that can make erwin happy since he is such a complex character and then ishiyama said "indeed what it is? this is what happen when you doesnt think too much when making a character" or something along the line i forgot the exact word
Erwin played the queen card so well cause he really made Pyxis to say that the wall fall 👏 and managed to reveal the fake goverment just amazing Commender
Who says that nowadays, anime is getting more and more accepted and tbh there are lots of animes, lots and lots that teach something very important. Because anime can be so flexible unlike many live action, also mangakas do really good research on each topic
Erwin was haunted by his dream of his sacrifised comrades and its time for him to rest. Moreover, he is always been motivated in finding the truth within the basement and the human outside of the wall. He would lost motivation after discovering the peoples in Marley and the will of his life and his humanity itself.
@@melvinyong3595 Exactly, Armin's dreams lied beyond the basement unlike Erwin's. Armin's aspirations are those that would benefit humanity in the long run. Levi made the correct choice.
@@kerubim402 True. Just because his main goal would be fulfilled doesnt mean he's useless afterwards. He would just be fulfilled and proceed to the next goal of fighting Marley, with his leadership everything would be go so smooth. And Chain of command would prolly not go down just like what happens in the manga. But yea for the sake of plot.. Let's revive armin
My brother wanted me to watch AOT for a long, long time and when I watched it 2 weeks ago and got the the part of him giving his final speech really gave me chills.. "My soldiers, rage! My soldiers, scream! My soldiers, fight!" I would trust this man with my life lol, miss this guy already
Thanks for your video. I loved Erwin Smith character right from the very first moments he showed up on this show! For me he was always the right choice.
During Season 2 when he lost his arm but still said "Charge ahead don't worry about me" That moment Erwin earn my 100% respect. Like What a leader. Yes, S3 tells us his motivation but still can't deny that this man is something else.
