@justins8802
@justins8802 4 года назад
Brad Urban - other thing to consider is the context where you would hear the noise. Max performance takeoff? Cruising? Flyover at a football game? In my experience, the F-22 is kind of quiet on a flyover since they have to keep the engines throttled back to avoid going supersonic. Whereas the F-16 can hit full afterburner for a few seconds without risking it. A flight of 5 F-16s pushing ABs over Kyle Field might have been the loudest planes (plural) I’ve ever heard.

From the underside, the Vulcan always reminded me of Rodan, the Japanese kaiju. Beautiful aircraft. Maybe not the fastest or best at what it was supposed to do, but it had great lines and an overall look to it.
@robw7676
@robw7676 Год назад
Not the best at what it was designed to do? In 1961, the US military staged 'Operation Skyshield II' - they grounded all domestic flights and sent 250 heavy nuclear bombers up to simulate an attack on the US. 8 of those aircraft were Vulcan B2s of the RAF stationed in Scotland and Bermuda. Approaching far above the B47 and B52 bombers of the USAF at 56,000 feet, and using radar jamming, all 8 sucessfully evaded the 1,800 fighter jets and 250 SAM sites hunting them. The Vulcan sucessfully "nuked" New York against the entire US air defence network without a single missile lock or visual contact.
@jessfrankel5212
@jessfrankel5212 Год назад
@@robw7676 Yes, that is true, and thank you for pointing that out. I would say, though, that while the Vulcan did operate extremely well in the upper reaches, was that due to it being 'better' or the American radar not being up to par? I'm not sure. I'm not saying that the Vulcan was a terrible supersonic bomber; it wasn't. But as with all things aeronautical, it was eventually superceded by other bombers, the Panavia Tornado, for example. (And I never really liked the Tornado). The B-52 was a bit slower than the Vulcan, but it could carry a bigger payload and was always being upgraded in one way or another. The Vulcan wasn't upgraded as often. Still, it was an excellent jet bomber.
@robw7676
@robw7676 Год назад
@Jess Frankel The only heavy supersonic bomber in the NATO arsenal was and is the US Rockwell B1 that entered service in the 1970s. All 1950s heavy bombers were conceived as strategic weapons to deliver nuclear bombs against a militarily advanced enemy from a high enough altitude to theoretically escape the blast. As NATO, particularly the UK and US, was effectively in an arms race with the USSR, their role evolved rapidly. Bombs were replaced by nuclear cruise missiles in the early 1960s, which involved swapping to low altitude attack, as the Soviet S75 surface to air missile had shot down a Taiwanese Canberra over China and a U2 over the USSR both flying in excess of 60,000 feet. The Vulcan and the B52 were both strong enough airframes to cope with this change to low-level flying. The range of the missiles they carried was sufficient to hit plenty of targets when launched from outside the range of Soviet SAMs and fighters, but certainly not all. The decision to retire heavy bombers as the main nuclear strike method was effectively taken in 1962 when development of the longer range Skybolt missile intended to equip both the B52 and the Vulcan was scrapped in favour of the better longer range option of submarine launched Polaris missiles. The last B52 and Vulcan airframes were already on order and were finished and delivered in 1964/5. It was probably the B52's usefulness in the Vietnam War as a high altitude tactical conventional bomber that prevented heavy subsonic bombers from being scrapped. Vietnamese communists were equipped with dozens of S75 missile batteries by the Soviets but the US had devloped countermeasures to jam them and use the radar signal as a target for missiles. Numerous B52's were shot down over Vietnam, but not at a devastating attrition rate - for example the last major operation (Linebacker II) had a 2.1% loss rate (16 from 760 sorties). A reduced number of Vulcans got another decade of service, whilst a relatively small number of B52s are are still going, and expected to serve until 2050.

I've never heard a Tornado, but F-4 Phantoms have overflown me at low altitude twice. The first time I was maybe 8 years old playing on my grandparents' farm. The farm was on a practice route occasionally used by military jets out of St. Louis. A pair of F-4s blasted past me not far above the trees, at high power and spewing trails of black smoke. The sound and vibration in my chest were overwhelming, in the most wonderful way! I was already space crazy and plane crazy and this couple of seconds ROCKED MY WORLD! :D B-52s flew over sometimes too. They'd make the whole house shake, but didn't seem as loud as those screeching F-4s. Perhaps that's because the big bomber emits a different mix of frequencies? I wasn't surprised to see the Avro Vulcan on the list. I never had the opportunity to see one flying, but have heard many describe their incredible sound. And from other things I've read, I'm thinking the Tupolev Tu-95 should have made the list too. :)

The Super Hornet and Eurofighter Typhoon are noticeably louder than the F-16, as is the B-1, virtually any version of Su-30/35, the MiG-31 the SR-71, the Soviet Tu-144 "Concordski", Tu-160 and Tu-22M bombers and even the high-pitched scream of the early C-5 and Il-76 could get the decibels up. The Soviet Tu-95 and An-22 use supersonic props and are loud from the front. The 737 Max occasionally makes a big boom too

I'm sorry but as someone whose been around aircraft most of his life (having lived in an air force town and being subject to air show noise for many years) the F-16 is definitely not louder than its contemporaries like the F-15 or F-14 which have twice the energy output (lbf) as the Viper. I remember seeing the Tomcat as a kid, and that thing would rattle your insides as it powered up for launch. And since they use the same engine, the Tomcat basically has the noise of two F-16s stitched together.

The thing about the Thunderscreech isn't so much it's "volume," as "how" it was loud. It was basically throwing out repeat sonic-boom's from it's props, creating what amounted to shockwaves and sub-sonic vibrations. The result could not only deafen air crews, but make them sick. One person apparently even had a seizure from it's unique brand of loud. Between that, and it's plague-list of other problems, it never got past flight testing. It did fly, but apparently 10 of it's 12 flights where emergency landings.

The XF-84H is so loud because the propeller spins so fast that it was it sent shockwaves literally every millisecond as it flew which means that its full volume has hasn’t been captured on video because it was mostly the shockwave’s that made it so loud and you can’t calture the sound of a shockwave on video so imagine being the pilot or the maintenance crew. Having seen 3/5 of these in person (on multiple occasions) I must disagree and say the f-16 doesn’t hold a candle to the Vulcan. The Vulcan is more than a noise, it’s a presence, its a vibration of your body and the ground beneath your feet. It rumbles through your chest and rattles your bones. It’s howl causing an almost eerily primitive fight or flight response. There’s honestly nothing else like it still flying. I shall miss seeing that bird in the air until the day I die

I have yet to hear an aircraft that could even be noticed if it were next to a Top Fuel Dragster taking off. That being said, I wonder about the XF-84H. If that plane can knock you down, give you a seizure, and release your bowels, it may be in the same decibel range as the dragster

Did you purposely pair it with the quietest narration? A few years ago I watched a Vulcan flying very low (Probably 1-2000ft) directly over my house multiple times as it was in a holding pattern waiting for it's time to shine in an airshow at Duxford. It was loud but not to the extent that I was really taken aback by it- we were far more mesmerised by it and saw it 4 or 5 times directly overhead. Probably a far better view than the airshow itself!

The F22 Raptor is much louder than the F16. My sons best friend lives right in the take off and landing flight path for the Eglin Air force base in FA. I'm a retired Navy Aviation Structural Mechanic/Hydraulics AMH. I love military aircraft. Sound and how loud it seems to the human ear is subjective. I've heard the Vulcan and the F22 and would put them in the same category. However, the F16 has a much higher pitch which to the way sound waves travel, higher pitch sound waves trail off quite rapidly, while lower pitch waves travel much farther, thus seeming louder. A perfect example is a subwoofer in a car traveling by your home.

The F-16 is not as loud as the F-35. I used to work for Pratt and Whitney and this is a known fact, engine noise levels are studied in a variety of conditions. In general all fighter aircraft in the US arsenal are within about 1-3 dB of each other in terms of noise production (F15, F16, F/A-18, F-22, F-35). But in most scenarios, particularly under full afterburner, the F35 is louder than the 16.

No real way to demonstrate exactly how loud the Thunderscreech was. But if you ever heard a sonic boom, and I've had a window break at our house because of one, imagine that 90 times per second for several minutes. Audio witnesses say they could hear the Thunderscreech just taxying from 20 miles away. It would cause personnel at Edwards to vomit and some even having permanent hearing damage. The sonic waves were emitting perpendicular to the aircraft's direction, so as it passed personnel 100's of yards off the side of the runway, they would be knocked down. The Navy was looking for something to take off from a Carrier, and this would have been the worst! But it was it's lack of speed that killed the project. It was supposed to go supersonic, but didn't even make it into the transonic envelope.
