The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an "access bowl", the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

Another memorable Maryland Basketball game was probably the greatest College Basketball game EVER played. The 1974 ACC Tournament Championship Game against N.C. State. No 3-point line, and the game was winner-take-all as only the conference champion from the major conferences earned a berth to the NCAA tournament. Even though State won that night 103-100 in overtime, the Terps missed the 1974 NCAA's despite being ranked in the top 5 for the majority of that season and declined the invite to the NIT. The following year, the NCAA made changes to the way the teams were selected to the tournament thus creating the "At-Large" selections that we see today. It was because of this game, that changed the NCAA tournament forever and most longtime Maryland fans still say the 1973-74 team was the best not to win a title.

Chris Foster - Yea that game should have definitely been on there. It was Historic and changed the way the NCAA tournament was played ( ultimately leading to the 68 teams , maybe more in future, that we have today ), not to mention the game itself was one of the best in history. But this list was done by someone younger, and just picked some memorable moments. Probably around my age, I was in school when the national championship team was there. Last game at Cole & both ACC tournament we won, I get them. But the win at Dean Dome, as great as it was, you could pick so many of the times we beat the teams in Blue when they were #1. And I love the Blake steal, one of my favorite plays, but they all should be team moments/achievements. But I still enjoy watching them. And I will always miss ACC !!

Lefty could have gotten in the Naismith as a contributor just for the at large bids and "Midnight Madness' which is the preseason celebration on each campus today. But he got in as great Coach and that's when he did best.

@Brian Bullard. As a spartan fan I couldn’t agree with you. These guys are not big ten material. The only reason we took em was for BTN market expansions. I’ll always consider them an ACC school.

@@Mrcharles. i mean overall sports wise it holds its own lacrosse, basketball and baseball are doing well while track and field, football, wrestling are lacking. idk bout wrestling but i know football has the talent just poor coaching, track is slowly builinding up to the talent lvl.... its a VERY competitive conference

tbh i have gotten over the move. sure the ACC would be happy to invite us back but is it worth it? We have already rebranded fully as a big ten member and it looks to stay that way for a while

Um back to back Final Fours and a National Championship and they have the '84 ACC tourney as their #1 moment? LMAO.

The Championship was clearly the #1 moment. I was fine with the list until then.

Obviously a National Championship is the ultimate achievement. But I'm guessing that whoever put this together wanted it to be just games in the ACC. And like many other fans there are many other memories that come to mind that could or should have been put on here. Guess we are all free to make our own list.

i find it funny how the maryland-duke rivalry was one of the biggest, yet the coaches gary and coach k were like best friends

Good riddance, Twerps. The B1G just got themselves a special type of trash. My lasting memory of the Twerps will be Virginia dominating them in basketball, winning 6 straight matchups (most by blowout), after Randy Edsall announced, "We don't lose to Virginia here at Maryland." Also, my man Justin Anderson coming to Virginia (where he's been fantastic), when Twerp fools thought he was going to Maryland... Then in his first trip with UVa to the hole in the wall they call the "Comcast Center," the garbage people of UMD started chanting nonsense at the innocent 18-year-old Anderson to which he chanted back, "I didn't pick you! I didn't pick you!" ...and UVa won that game in overtime, but led by double digits most of the game, eventually breaking the Twerps little achy hearts. Also filed under "Classic Twerps" was the final basketball game of the regular season in 2014 which Maryland won, and the aftermath. To them, they pulled off a huge upset and showed their rivals how good they were - the court storming was a cute effect. But to Virginia, we were already ACC Champs and a lock for the #1 seed in the ACC Tourney, not caring what the result was against those meddling little Twerps - then we sat back and watched them get knocked out in the first round of the ACC Tourney, then get snubbed by the NIT! How embarrassing. I look forward to seeing the Hoos put Maryland in their place in December. It's too bad the B1G is equally as good as the ACC and UMD will still have a hard time finishing in the top half of the conference. And Twerp fans are using the excuse of the "All Carolina Conference" as why they are happy to leave... Well, enjoy the "Ohio State and UM" conference, fools. Nobody will miss you one bit Maryland... Even Seth Allen chose the trash heap of Virginia Teck basketball over you! Sincerely, Just about everyone

Ryan Herich Haha! You mad? We beat Maryland 7 out of the last 8 times in basketball. Dominance. Who cares what MD won 10-plus years ago. We enjoyed you all's classy chants when we whooped you on your home court a few weeks ago! You all were loud and talking crap but got really quiet when your team was losing big. By the way, Justin Anderson is a beast. Seeya Twerp! Lol

Ryan Herich And get your mom to wash your mouth out with soap. It's filthy. I hope you don't kiss anything with that mouth. Oh wait...you're a Maryland fan. That explains it.
