Love your rattlesnake rattle analogy. I also have learned to look because most times it is a gopher snake rattling its tail in dry leaves. When you started talking about the rattle, thought you were talking about preemptive display rather than wild-ass mag dump. Mag dump would be more like a skunk spraying wildly, rattle is a quiet audible warning - not an attack.

Everything said here is the absolute truth but until you’ve been in a real gunfight you have no idea how you’ll perform. In ‘74 I engaged armed robbery suspects in a gunfight & had to reload my issued Colt Detective Special under fire. Before it was over I had emptied my gun twice, was out of ammo but the suspect was down. Never had the chance to look at my sights b/c it was after dark & there was no time to aim.

13 is my favorite number 13:13 Thank you for sharing your seminar. I used to strongly dislike ASP because I had the wrong idea. Now I understand the value of living sober, sane, prudent, and moral. It's almost like I thought ASP was condoning gun violence, but now I understand. Thinking in this way can benefit everyone. Almost like therapy... learning these lessons really could help everyone.

John, I'd been watching your channel for a year when a road rager blocked my car and jumped out and started storming back to me to try to start a fight. I heard you saying not to let the guy get to my car and to floor it into him if I saw a weapon. My car automatically locks its doors but it was a nice day so I had the back windows down and was too occupied with the impending threat to put them up. My first thought was to put it in reverse and do a j-turn but there was a car behind me. Traffic cleared in the oncoming lane so I was able to whip a u-turn and floor it out of there. When I got to work and was able to decompress I stepped through what had happened and compared them to what you'd taught in your road rage defense videos. Had I not watched your videos I probably would have honked at the guy as he was approaching which would have enraged him more. He probably would have tried to pull me out or smashed up my car. I wasn't carrying pepper spray that day because my sister had lost hers so I'd given her mine. I probably would have eventually figured out to drive around him and his car but your videos put me in the defensive mindset much sooner. Tl;dr: people do hear your voice when stuff starts going down. Your lessons stick subconsciously. They're the ones who execute those lessons but you're there as a sensei spirit.

I love this, John! It's so well done... what a great teacher you are! I've always been the one in my family who keeps a level head when stuff goes down. I was the one who took care of the kids' injuries, doing triage and decided what needed to be done. I've managed a number of vehicular accidents, dealing with stuff as it needed to be done. I can melt down later. To date, I have not had a critical defensive incident. I pray I never do. But you'll be there screaming in my ear exactly what to do in the event that one comes my way. God bless you, sir!

I mentioned this somewhere else, I love guns and they are kind of my passion. That has absolutely zero to do with why I carry one everyday everywhere I go! I carry a gun for serious business, to keep myself, my loved ones, and my community safe when someone tries to commit harm! Rick

3:24....he's right. I was in a traffic accident and was CONVINCED I had been rear ended. This without any visible damage to my rear end and I wasn't injured. This was impossible as the other vehicle was going over 70 mph and I was stopped. Adrenaline screwed my head up so much I reported it as a hit and run to police. It wasn't until about an hour or so later I calmed down enough to realize that lady never actually hit me. YOU CANNOT TALK TO POLICE THE MOMENT OF COMBAT. WAIT TILL LATER.

Maybe I've had a few more adrenaline dumps than average but in 2005 (iirc) i was involved in an accident on Ft Bragg when the hmmwv in front of me stopped suddenly. I served but still clipped the drivers side rear corner which crumpled the passenger front of my truck and nearly put the air filter in my TC's lap. As soon as we stopped i turned off the engine and yelled "you ok?" at my TC. Once i knew he was ok i jumped out to check on the other truck. In 2017 a man pulled a gun on me trying to rob the pharmacy i worked at. While giving my statement to the police they said "you're a lot more put together than the people we usually talk to in these situations."

I used to shoot a lot when I lived in Texas and did krav maga. I was in LA once on a krav seminar and Scott Reitz was in the room. He is the top LAPD firearms expert and he had told us he had been in 3 or 4 shootings. He said most shootings are very close, and over in a second or two. He also said that when they asked the cops involved how many rounds they fired they were often wildly wrong - one would say 2 shots and they would ask, :Well why were you on your second magazine then? Or the guy thought he fired 10 times but fired 4.

On my job I saw this young 20ish valet pull his handgun on a guy after laughing at him for yelling, from across the street. The guy charged the valet for laughing at him, valet pulled the gun and the guy backed off REAL fast. Huge attitude adjustment. The only time I have ever seen a gun defensively used, not by cops. I wanted to take that valet aside and say, hey, do you realize your life almost changed because you are armed and decided to mock a guy you don't know? Luckily he didn't pull the trigger and had the emotional control not to. If I had to testify I would have to say I don't think based on my knowledge of self defense and the law and psychology and use of force that a gun was justified. (OC spray would definitely have been against an unarmed crazy attacker).

The thing about adrenaline dumps is that the less experience you have in real situations the bigger it will be. Things that used to give me a full adrenaline dump with tunnel vision, today won't even make my heart beat faster. I am not trying to brag, but that is the truth. At the same time, there are situations where a thought can give me adrenaline, where it would not to others. It is odd. What I am saying is adrenaline is hard to deal with.

It saddens me to know so many civvies cannot put accurate rounds on targets under stress. That American store owner needs a shit ton of training. Training is cheap. Missing the target while dumping your mag is an expensive mistake. I admit that I take for granted the thousands or rounds I put down range to become proficient in dropping dog targets using iron sights, ACOGs, and while wearing a M40A1 in the dark. I always assumed my training was normal. I stand corrected.

Interestingly the military teaches 'suppression fire'. Virtually all rounds fired in the military are not aimed at anyone. 18000 rounds per hit in Korea. It got worse in Viet Nam. Seriously. Look at those numbers. The military have pragmatic reasons to suggest that firing to make the enemy keep his head down and not attack works. That said, in a self defense situation you are responsible for every round you fire, unlike the military. Remember, the police and courts are not on your side. They are on the side of the people that pay them directly and the people who can make their lives bad, i.e. the government and the press.

I’m no expert but 😬 If you have to qualify “small bullet- big world” with “it’s a bad idea” or some form of it- why even say it? If you want to teach people to be responsible for every single round, I’d think it’s counter productive. Because if even one person in the audience internalizes the first half but not the second (because that’s how eidetic phrases work) isnt it one too many?

I’m not the first in line to call someone an expert for having watched a lot of videos, but let’s give some credit where credit is due. John has not only watched a lot of videos, but he also has taken more training than most citizens, from some of the top instructors in the country. He is certified to teach everything there is to be certified to teach. He is more qualified to teach self defense than the vast majority of law enforcement officers, and in many cases that includes law enforcement instructors. Having been in a gunfight doesn’t mean you are now qualified to teach. In fact, it can be an obstacle to teaching, because it is hard to separate yourself from your gunfight and consider other situations. Every gun fight is difficult not to view from the lens of your gunfight. I say this from experience, which I’m not going to go into. John is absolutely qualified to teach this course, regardless of whether or not he has been in a gunfight.

@@mtthwpnn I asked a question for John… being trained by swat team and police is boots on the ground school of hard knocks training. You either lived, ate and breathed aviation or students would realize the fake ness In the first class hour.
