Vegors Cemetery is located on a ridge overlooking the confluence of the Boone and Des Moines River, where Henry Lott and his family settled. The cemetery is said to have been located atop burial mounds constructed by natives, which is why it is haunted. The area that is now Hamilton and Webster counties has a rich history well covered in books available electronically from the University of Iowa. The story as I understand it says that Henry Lott was trading with the natives but a disagreement arose. One winter day a group of natives approached the Lott residence while Henry and his eldest son were out hunting. Mrs. Lott apparently became concerned and sent a younger son, Milton, down river towards the town of Boone to bring help. Milton apparently froze to death. A monument honoring Milton is situated on the west side of the Des Moines River, a short distance upriver from Boone. It is said that Mrs. Lott never recovered from these events and passed a short time later. Henry sought revenge upon the natives, which did result in the Spirit Lake Massacre. Later, the town of Homer, Iowa was established nearby, but later failed. A few building and a very interesting cemetery remain.
