Yeah, Pelikan is definitely not improving the Souveräns by making them opaque. I have a vacuum-fill pen which has a barely translucent acrylic, and it's very frustrating, despite being beautiful. Piston pens should have ink windows. Full stop.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Год назад
I never even look at an ink window. I know when I'm getting low on ink. I just refill my piston pens once a week. For others in might be once a month, but ink windows I do not need and do not like. To me, they just disrupt the beauty of the pen. If I had my way, none of my pens would have ink windows.

I disagree. Ink window makes a pen look cheaper.

Wow just want to say you’re looking great, awesome progress on the squat. Definitely don’t stop working out! I decided to just stick with a Vac700R as my only fountain pen (with the cool vac 20a fill bottle), a Pilot Acroball 3 0.7mm multi pen for work, and a titanium slim click from Bigidesign because titanium and multiple refill options.

Yep, a second hand M1000, is on my dream list also. And to complete my Souveran collection a second hand M300 that was discontinued a couple of years ago. Practically speaking this might be the year I get around to getting a pen I first started craving in the 1970s! Still don’t have on -the Lamy 2000. Thanks for this vid, Happy Christmas!

The only one I have definitively on my list for 2023 is a hand painted Benu. I love the ones they’ve been releasing so far and I feel pretty confident they’ll release one I can’t be without sometime in 2023.

Enjoyed your video! I just picked up a Pilot Urushi Vermilion on EBay from a dealer in Japan for a great price-it cost about half of what I would have paid for it from a dealer in the USA. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

With you on the Benu Cookies and Cream. It’s the only Benu I’ve seen that I think I could even vaguely pull off. 😂 On my list are a 912 FA and maybe a(nother) Capless in Marble Green. Apart from that I’ll just be hoping nobody releases a limited edition in my favourite shade of turquoise! 💸

I have a pilot custom heritage and a sailor KOP on my list this year. I also desperately want a Nahvalur Nautilus with the 3 porthole windows, but none of the colors have made my heart sing thus far. If they came out with a light color like an ice themed one, I’d snap it up in a heartbeat!

Pelikan is going opaque due to supply chain issues as a result of COVID. They are having trouble with their supplier, and so have change the supplier for the material. We can hope that once things settle down over the next few years, Pelikan will revert back to the translucent bodies. Then the opaques might be more valuable, but for now this is the reason, and maybe they do or don't make a comeback.

the Benu Cookies and Cream looks delicious :D I support the legitimacy of having your pens look like food that you can't have, I ended up getting a Pelikan M200 in Smoky Quartz which looks like the iced black coffee that I used to order wayyy too often haha. As for my dream pens, I'm definitely interested in the new Monoc nib from Schon Dsgn, probably paired with a pocket Peek because the ghost engraving is so cute! The thing that's holding me back for now (aside from of course that I shouldn't spend that much money when I already have dropped a lot on pens and ink recently) is that they plan to release more nib sizes next year, so hopefully I'll manage to be patient. I also really want to pick up a Franklin Christoph, but I'm undecided on the color/model because I'm trying to limit it to only one and it's so hard to choose.

Soooooo ... Not hard and fast, but I'll likely be on a "no buy" year for pens in 2023. I picked up more pens than expected this past year, so for the next I'll be trying to focus, curate, re-home, etc. vs. further expansion. That's the goal anyway. Regarding YOUR goals, definitely get a Platinum 3776 Century Celluloid. I have the Ishigaki (Calico) and I LOVE it. It's like no other pen in my collection, so special. And I added my Pelikan M605 black tortoiseshell in 2022 so I'm feeling pretty great about my Pelikans (though I'd love a vintage Peli). Will be fun to see how many of your wishes/predictions come true for you!

Great list! I have a list of pens I'd love to get at some point, but defintely not aiming for 2023. A Pilot e95s, the Pilot 912 with a Waverly nib, a Scribo Feel, an Esterbrook Estie with a Journaler or Scribe nib, the Diplomat Nexus (for the "new" filling mechanism, a Pineider Avatar Dual Touchdown, a Kaweco AL-Sport piston-filler (when they are introduced). And on the once-upon-a-time-in-the-probably-very-distant-possibly-never list, the Namiki Emperor. Most likely the Vermillion, but if we're dreaming, the owl.

Great list. I'm at a similar juncture in my pen hobby journey. Would love a FM Custom Urushi and a KOP. For some reason, however, Sailor only offer them in M/B and for me, the MF they offer on the Pro Gear is the sweet spot. The Namiki pens are another level altogether lol but again mostly only F/M/B. Better get saving for that Custom Urushi.

Love your video’s. Suggest you look at Lotus Pens and their Maharaja with a #8 Magna Carta nib. The owner of Lotus Pens will create you one for your personal color/acrylic or Ebonite. I have several and love them. They are big but not heavy and mirrors the $2000 Namibian Emperor. Is clearly is not the equivalent but in this case you would use this one rather only look at it. I use mine frequently. Just a suggestion to look at them. Happy New Year’s.

Great list. I agree completely that Pelikan pens are much less desirable now that there's no translucency between the stripes. I won't be buying anymore unless they are second hand, and I'm guessing the ones with translucency will go up in value. In 2023, I'd like to acquire my first gold-nibbed Aurora and a Waterman Carene. The latter is achievable, but for now, an Aurora is financially out of reach. I did get one "grail pen" in 2022, a pen from 18111com, so I'm content for now.

I started with fountain pens early this year and bought a lot of pens. 😳 I can’t justify to my practical side the expense of a pen higher than $150. Also… I’ve only seen one expensive one, the recent Egyptian inspired one, that I’d buy if money were no limit. 😂 That said I am loving Benu. Such smooth juicy writers! I would love to get several euphorias. I have vodka and would like to add bourbon, rainbow slushie, and French poetry. I have one Talisman (dragons blood) and still want mandrake. I doubt I will get that many Benus. We’ll see!

Great list. I've never owned a Sailor KOP (tried one briefly at a pen show, seemed really good), but I have a Pelikan M1000 from the 1990s, and honestly I think it is overrated -- just my view. I find it comfortable to hold and use bigger pens in general, but the 1000 is just a notch too bulky, while the 800 has similar appeal but is easier to use. Hope that might help to focus your dream #5.

While I am not a Pelikan fan, if you get the new one in January, you get two from your list in one pen. The Maki-e pen and the Pelikan M1000. Have it ground by a pro, so it is exactly as you like it. Spend the money, just make it worthy. And that Pelikan you showed that may come out in January is gorgeous. I also like the 3776 tortoise celluloid.

The main pen is like to buy this year is a Pelikan 805. Maybe secondhand so that it has the transparency. I would also very much like to try the new Monoc from Schon, when he makes a slightly finer nib. Otherwise, I'm looking to send two pens that I Iinherited (a Montblanc 144 and a Sheaffer 1001 xg) to a nibmeister, so that they are comfortable for me.

I have a pretty large collection of pens. However, there are some noticeable gaps in my collection. Among other pens I want to add to my collection that I'm pretty sure I'll be able to is a Kaweco Liliput in stainless steel with an EF nib (and a clip) and a Kaweco Brass Sport in EF (with a clip!). I will probably get a Kaweco AL Sport in raw aluminum (EF, with a clip! Sensing a pattern?) just because I don't have an AL sport yet. If money were no object, I could probably fill a 20-pen case with new Pilot pens, but I'll probably end up with only one at most from among the Custom 74, the Custom 912, the Metal Falcon, and the Custom 823. I'm kind of wanting a Conklin crescent-filler in gunmetal, though I'd jump on a true vintage Conklin crescent filler in black chased hard rubber, just for the kinship to Mark Twain. No doubt Lamy, TWSBI, Jinhao, Wing Sung, PenBBS, and who knows who else will come out with something that catches my eye throughout the year. Oh, if I see a Pelican M205 in gold swirl with an EF nib for sale used I might take a stab at it. That was one of my regrets over the past couple of years that I missed out on.

The top for me is a gold nib Naginata style grind, either the real deal Sailor or a B Pilot 823 with custom grind. Both are a bit intimidating in price and/or logistics, so far more likely and less aspirational are a second BENU and a PenBBS 456 with one of their Calligraphy Nibs.

I got into this hobby early this year and like someone else in the comments, went on a purchasing spree. I also find it hard to justify more expensive pens. However, I'm slowly finding more excuses. My list of wants 1) Pilot Vanishing Point 2) Gravitas Pocket Pen in any of these: Polycarbonate, Ultem, Skittles finish, or Universe 3) Gravitas Storm Trooper 4) Vintage Sheaffer Snorkel 5) Gravitas Black Delrin with Orange Ceracote My normal rule is, pen must have a clip unless it's a pocket pen because I usually carry my pens in a shirt pocket. The Gravitas Black Delrin and Storm Trooper are the exceptions, they look cool and I'm sure I could find a clip for them.

I love my m805 -- although I, too, found the broad to be BROAD -- perfect for the many times I sign a treaty between great Empires. So, I sprang ... sprung? ... for a 2-tone fine, and am very pleased with the results. But, I have to say that my best writer is a Pineider Avatar UR with a 14k Iperflex nib. And, still loving my Benu Euphoria Bourbon! On a hospital chaplain's income, and delighted with my Jinhaos and Hong Dians and Asvines, there seems only one aspirational pen for me for the next decade: a Namiki Emperor. At 64, I have to pay attention to when my hand starts shaking so much that I shouldn't bother -- hopefully not for another couple of decades.

I', biased, yhere's Maik-e, and then there's Namiki Maki-e. The difference is astounding, which comes, I suspect, from having artists who train for as long as twenty years before being trusted to create a Maki-e pen. Sailor is a reasonably close second, but the detail on Namiki blows Sailor away. But I am definitely BIASED big time. I've loved Namiki pens since I was young, but never could afford one. Worse, I got to write with three of them, and that only made it worse. Biased yet again, but not a Van Gogh, but a Rembrandt. I often say these pens are like a Rembrandt in beauty and level of art, but artowrk that you can hold and use, rather than just hang on the wall and look at. I don't know if it's this way all the time, or even if it's always this way with Namiki, but if you need convincing in order to uise a Maki-e as if it were any other pen, ask to speak to the artist who created it. He said all the artists would be willing to beg people to use their creations. It was almost an insult not to use them. I didn't need convincing, but it was good to hear that. If you haven't seen one in person, try to find a way to see a Chinkin, which I love just as much as the Maki-e pens. At least as much. The engraving is unbelievable. It's a more understated beauty, but at least as appealing, at least to me.

O.K. Just yesterday I swore I was done buying. I gave up on ever spending enough to get an Arco pen by either ASC or (vintage) Omas. I did get a good deal on the Pinneider Arco (Dante’s creation for a lookalike). I swore it would be the last. Then, “thou dost temp me gain,” for you remind me that I too have the irrational lust for the Pilot Custom Urushi. I am desperately trying to do the impossible: get it out of my mind, especially since I have the Pilot Custom 845, which fits my medium hands and writes like a dream. Why are we created to obsess for the next level? Some good reasons; many bad! Don’t worry, as I will continue to watch your reviews and click “like.” At 76, I just need to grow up and realize what I have now. Right? Ah, but…

This'll be my second-ish year and I'm definitely gonna focus on gold and flex nibs, something I've avoided till now. I think I want to start with the 3776 because I can't go beyond a certain nib smoothness without irritating a damaged nerve, though I find it ironic that my obsession with smoothness is coming to an end right as I can finally afford gold. As much as Goulet-san promotes it I'll probably never own a 74, I tried one and it was too smooooooth for my taste right now. Ah well, off to get gaijintaxed...unless uh, do you trust that ebay guy? I don't want to say I have a love hate with gravitas, more of a love meh. I got an earlier pen when Ben still used Jowo nibs and much prefer it. He's moved away from Jowo and they don't do it for me. Plus, they don't fit Jowos anymore. I will say, I got non-standard nibs the last two. I got the fine-flex and a TiSiNX coated one. As soon as I switch to more standard nibs, I think I'll be happy. They are built beautifully and solid though Edit/Update: Because of this comment, I actually tinkered with my Gravitas tonight. While the Jowo nib doesn't fit the stock feed and housing, a Jowo nib unit does fit the pen. I swapped them and it's put new life into the TiSiNX pen for me!

About Platinum pens. I'm starting to wonder if the powers that be got the message about too much feedback. I bought a 3776 with a medium nib almost three years ago, and the feedback was very strong. Not out of line, can't write with it strong, but pretty bad. I caught a very good sale on the 3776 a couple of months ago and bought two of them, also with medium nibs. Both nibs are extremely smooth with no hint of feedback. I don't know whether I just got lucky, or what, but I was almost shocked. To buy in 2023? Ideally, nothing. No pens at all, and only some yet to be released, incredibly unusual ink. But I've said this many times before, and it hasn't happened yet. And, truthfully, there is one pen I would buy in a heartbeat, if my finances come together, and if one comes on the market. It's the Conway Stewart Indiana Jones Lever Fill. But it was a numbered pen and they only made one hundred of them. It sold out instantly. I had no chance to buy one. This is what I HATE about numbered pens. I usually pay no attention to whether a pen is numbered, or a special edition. If I like a pen, I buy it, and don't care about anything else. But when there's only one hundred, it's planned scarcity, and that I hate.

I too am glad I own the Pelikan pens I wanted to get. It is a mistake. They might as well move to a more modern acrylic. I do not have any of their special and limited editions, but they may have sold much more quickly than the legacy models. Alas, we do not get to see what their marketing team has researched.

I agree that Pelikan's decision to go for opaque pens rather than transparent is a huge mistake. I have a large collection of Pelikans but have decided against buying the new 605 Black Tortoiseshell simply because it offers no way of checking the remaining ink level. At least the recent Red Tortoise and Green Black striped M600s allow an IPhone torchlight to be focused on the barrel to see the remaining ink level. That is inconvenient but just about bearable. When I tried the same on someone's M605 Black Tortoiseshell there was no visibility. This is a real pity as I can't see myself ever buying Pelikans unless, of course, they produce some future demonstrators. I think Pelikan will suffer badly from this needlessly destructive design change.

I actually bought an M1000 this year precisely because they are changing the material to be opaque, and I wanted to get one before that happens. But I am quite happy with my purchase. I also got an EF nib and it writes somewhat similar to the FA nib on the Pilot 912. Fine, feedbacky, very wet and a little flexy. So if you like the FA nib I think you'll like the M1000 nib as well.

I'm confused. You want to get rid of all but five of the pens you currently own, but you want to begin acquiring five pens beginning next year? Pelikan had already made some piston fill pens with no ink windows in their Special Edition M640 line: The Niagara Falls, Eternal Ice, Mount Everest, Sahara, Polar Lights, and Indian Summer. Although I own two of the series, they come with silver trim, while I prefer gold. Whenever I order any Pelikan, I always specify a F nib, because the Ms write like Bs. I own both a KOP and a Pelikan M1000, and enjoy both, but I favor the Sailor.
