I bought my 4x4 for hauling my boat with the lower gears but your right sport quad a way cooler i never use 4x4 in the trails never needed it... I want one of those now for my second.
So... I am 47 years old and have owned numerous three wheelers quads and side-by-side ‘s. Since transitioning to quads in the 1990s during the Yamaha banshee era I have totally fell in love with the Yamaha raptor 700. I got my first 700 back in 2012 and then did the side-by-side thing owning a Yamaha rhino and a Yamaha YXZ. Although I had fun on the side by side I sold it about six months ago and have never been happier! I totally missed riding a quad and feel totally rejuvenated and excited about going out again. I totally agree with every point you made in this video! 👍🏻
Sport quads are great, I love my YFZ450, but the MX based quads are SO stiff, they're very tiring to ride, especially if it's been a while. I agree with most of your points though, even though they take more skill/energy to ride they're such a blast, especially in the dunes! Glamis on a quad is amazing, except when you have to cross the choppy stuff haha.
Thanks for checking us out! We ride in KY trails so the Raptor is really good for us.. We're tricking em out a bit with the big 3, +2 arms, long travel suspension ect... Makes em super fun..
Trade it for a new Raptor 700R ! Much, much more comfortable an can lug around in 3rd gear half the day plus get top notch MX suspension (sprung softer). You have the wrong sport machine is all.
@@DirtObseXXion I used to ride Big Rock in Maysville. I rode a lot at Haspin acres in Indiana as well and Croom in Florida when down there in the winter.
You are absolutely correct about small riding areas feeling bigger with a sport quad! We set up different routes and do time trials, and it never seems to get old. When we go somewhere bigger, I do envy the comfort of my wife’s Sportsman compared to my Raptor. All day riding on it really beats you up, but I’d never get rid of it!
Another 50+ with a 700 Raptor, loving it! Much easier to load and unload to go have fun then dealing with a SXS. Utility quads have their place but sport quads are for fun.
You are speaking the truth, my 45 year old and overweight self loves riding my 2004 Honda Trx450r Got a brute force 750 too, it's fun but the sport quads will always give a more of an adrenaline rush
I love them both for their intended purposes. I went from an 08 Yamaha FZ450R to a 21 Yamaha Kodiak 700 4x4. the new one is great for comfort and mudding as well as creek crawling, yet I miss the throttle response of the 450.
#save the sport quads! Love it. If y’all are like me, when I was growing up, nobody wanted a damn 4x4 or utility quad except your uncle and your grandpa. Give me blasters, warriors, ex’s, banshees or any other clutched 2x4 any day! For god sakes someone really needs to make another 2 stroke quad. There should be an EPA permission in the sole interest of saving the sport. Have y’all seen what a decent banshee goes for nowadays? Crazy. Here in the Deep South they just want to ride mud holes. Boys in the city put radials on older sport bikes. What the hell is happening!?
My first quad was a 1990 350 yamaha warrior that i purchased new i was in my twenty's then. We rode from sun up to sun down. At the time it was the fastest 4 stroke you could buy. Sold it in 97 and built a house. I missed it so bad i found a sweet 01 slightly used in 01 and i still have it. We ride the same mountain trails that we had back then all behind my house. Still riding at almost 58 semi retired trucker.
Lots of variety in this video curtesy of flyin Brian! Right on guys good video, hopefully one day all of us highlighting them becomes worth it and gets a manufacturer other than Yamaha to come back 🤟 #savesportquads
SPORT QUADS TIL I DIE!! Although, The only thing better than a sport Atv is a Honda big red. It’s a lunch packing, work light toting, deer hauling, trail ripping, farm working, hill killing machine!!
Unless you are riding along a side hill. I would never gave up my trikes if they could handle driving along a hill without rolling. A trike is a way more versatile and can go places a quad has no chance of following.
You know, it's funny. This is a good video a few years back I had a suzuki ltz 450 And I went over the handlebars. Going really fast and broke my shoulder and got very discouraged and sold it. Since then, I've been thinking about getting a 4 by 4. But in all honesty I don't really think I want to deal with all of the maintenance problems. I think you inspired me to get a regular quad. Once again l o l thanks for the cool video
I’ve owned and logged thousands of miles on both utility and sport quads. For recreation and all out fun on the trails, hands down the sport quads are best. There are some trade offs when it comes to capabilities..with 4x4 obviously deep mud. But I learned early on that when it came to steep hills, the lighter weight and wheel speed was more effective than 4x4. Still love the utilities..on the trail they are a blast and serve well as an insurance policy ‘mother ship’ with the winch..plus putting a plow on one makes clearing your driveway tons of fun too. But on any given weekend of shredding trails, my weapon of choice is always a sport quad.
I've been riding almost 20 years and started out on sport quads in the early 2000s and always liked them better. I have had a few 4 X 4s and it's just not the same...
Especially everywhere lol. I really don't get the appeal of them EXCEPT for taking the kids. That's the only reason I even considered getting one, luckily it was just a moment of weakness and I didn't actually get one.
I picked up my new YFZ450r a couple weeks back. I have the body weight advantage like you guys to slider her through the corner... We will see how I like it compared to my Outlander XTP. Being in my early 40's the sport quad brings be back to the good ol days of my riding youth.
Right there with you I'm 44 years old and just got back into the sport quad game myself with a brand new Raptor 700R. My last sport quad was a 2006 Polaris outlaw 500 irs I bought brand new back in 2006. My biggest regret is being out of the sport quad game for so many years. Enjoy it🤘 and congratulations 🤙
4:49 where I live those goddanm side X sides make every trail worse mabye its different for utility sxs like the ranger general or any other smaller sxs those big can am mavericks and Polaris Rzrs make every quad need 4x4
I went out to a pit yesterday with a converted mini bike I've been messing around on and everyone had a sport ATV except my neighbor, but he can rip it and pop wheelies on the 650 like its nothing. I personally like the Smaller sport ATV and plan on getting one myself, thanks for the vid and information!
I'm in my mid-50's and have been wondering if I'm too old to be riding my 700 Raptor , been considering a 750 Brute Force . I can take my Raptor on serious nasty rocky trails and it might not be as smooth and graceful and comfortable as my wife on her 500 Sportsman , but there is NO WAY I can jump the Sportsman 30-40 feet at the local MX track . Don't have any real mud holes near me in Colorado .
Love hearing that!! I'd personally go Grizzly over the Brute but I say stick it out with the Raptor! You'll know when it's time to grow up, but I'm guessing you're not there yet!!!
Don’t go to the other side lol I’m older than you & still ride with these guys . Gotta know your & Raptor limits or do what I did put a winch on Raptor for mistake riding lol That’s my red&white 700 in his pic from Theatvworld & Dirt at white Sulphur
I am 54 and I have done them both and I will never go back to sport ATV I love my Polaris sportsman XP 1000s and all the places it can take me and its way more fun in the snow
Never been to dunes, but I do know that my Raptor didn't have a bit of problems in sand and my wifes foreman 4x4 on mud tires would barely make it through without 4wd. I just floated over the soft sand and her big lugs just dug down.
I love being in the parking lot unloading my clapped out wheeler outta my old truck while a dude unloads his $25K sxs, with rap blaring, looking down at me because I can only afford a sporty!
probably looking down at you by jealousy thinking about how much fun it could be to drive this sport atv, but is instead stuck with this big expensive ‘’ second but not road legal car’’ lol because probably had to entertain a family too and must be the only reason why the GF is not much complaining about this ‘’ unnecessary, unjustified expensive purchase whatsoever she might have called it if it would have been a 1 seater sport atv’’
If your vehicle of choice has a belt, IT'S JUNK !!!!!!!! If your vehicle of choice costs as much as an antique Camaro and breaks an A arm on a bump n jump, IT'S JUNK !!!!!!!!! 4x4 atv's are good for mudding, but again, if it's got all kinds of push button electronics, bitch selection modes and a belt, IT'S JUNK !!!!!!!!
those GD sxs tearing up the trails, can't say the enough! They spent their 20-30k and are going to get their moneys worth >:( Also you guys need to pick up a 525 irs outlaw.
Honda 700xx would be fun too, but they’re hard to find. Why Honda didn’t use that very potent engine in any of their utility quads makes me shake my head. It would have been a great choice.
I never had a 4x4 growing up. Always had a sport. My friends rode 4x4s and I went everywhere they did, I just had to use a different technique. My 400EX followed them all over the Harlan Kentucky mountains. If you know how to ride one they can even do things the 4x4 couldn’t. There was one hill at black mountain that was long and slick and the 4x4 guys couldn’t quite make it up ( this was years ago before 1000cc). But I could build more momentum and slingshot myself up the hill on the 400ex 👍🏻. I could build speed much quicker than they could. But of course that isn’t the case today with much more powerful 4x4s. But back in 2002 or so I could conquer the same trails they did and climb bigger hills. I just had to find my way around deep mud 👍🏻
Sport quads are more exciting i mean unless you like putting around in a lazyboy chair through the woods and they can get through a lot more terrain then most people think changing gears is great fun i think i would get bored with no gears to rip through getting stuck in mud holes is to much like work id rather spend my time riding
Im 25. I have, and will only own sport quads. I've had a honda 90, trailblazer 250, ltz400, and i just purchased my first factory new atv, a raptor 700r. Just from the little bit I've road the raptor in these 2 weeks since ive got it im definitely in love. It does make me sad that yamaha is the only Manufacturer that hasnt bailed on the sport quads.
I have a 450 atv for the trails, a 525 atv for the dunes (both KTM). Never have more fun than those but as I get older and after riding the my friends renegades I’m torn between them. You have to stay in some kind of physical shape to ride the sporty the way they are meant to be ridden. We aren’t getting any younger and injuries stack up when racing.
Side by sides rule! Sport qauds I rode my entire life until I picked up my fist side by side! Only time I get my old trx250r out is to zip around do wheelies and such. I can smoke Sport atvs in the trail all day long. Ps quit using the G/D words like at the 447 mark..... Didn't like it at all we all are God fearing southern folks 🙏
What about dual solid axle atvs lol, mine is a 87 honda foreman 350 so its dual solid axle. Also I don't ride trails, I ride in the wild, in hollars, and creeks.
The only places utility quads are better are the places I really don’t want to ride. I’m not interested in digging through mud or riding down a creek. I’ll cross a creek but I don’t care to ride in one for long. Just don’t find that stuff fun. I don’t want my quad caked in mud after a ride either.
I prefer utility quads because they are more versatile and can do things sport quads can't But yeah, the amount of fun you can have on a sport quad is second to nothing.
I grew riding ATV's instead of dirtbikes like my dad and brother. Quads just fit me better. I haven't had a sport quad for 10 years, and I'm really missing them. Especially after watching you and your buddies transition back to them. I currently have a Rincon, Grizzly 700, and a RZR Trail. I don't plan on giving them up, but have been really considering a KFX450 or a Raptor 700. The used market is pricing astronomically high right now, so the KFX is more appealing because I can find them a bit cheaper. But they seem in more rough shape. I know they are somewhat apples to oranges, but how would you guys compare the 2 for actual trail performance? Not racing, but for fun. Like how they handle real trails, hill climbs, wheelies and occasional jumps?
The kfx450 is awesome for trails! It handles much better than a Raptor so you can push it harder in tight trails. The Raptor is more comfortable and more powerful but the kfx450 is really underrated because it wasn't a good race quad..
I completely agree with your vid. Sport quads are so much more fun & engaging. I remember drooling over the 250R & Banshees when they first came out. My first quad was an 86 230 QuadSport in 1993. Bought a Yamaha Warrior in 1997. Fast forward to 2021…at 46 bought a barley rode great condition 99 Honda 400EX. OMG what a blast…like I’m 22 again. Should of traded in my Warrior for one. Currently adding a high comp piston & stage 2 cam. More Power Baby!! 😃😃
I just can’t see spending the kind of 💰💰on a SxS to take out and beat on and break expensive parts on every weekend. Glorified VW dune buggies in my opinion. #savesportsquads
@@DUNEATV right on!! I’ve drove a couple of my friends and I get the hype, but I know how I would be with a sxs and I’d end up with a $20k pile of twisted metal. lol.
I absolutely hated my RZR 900. I sold it after 9 months and used the money to buy an LTR 450 for myself and a Z400 for my girl and still had money left over. I will never buy a side by side ever again! There is nothing better than the thrill of riding a sport atv.
I’m so sad. We are in the second dark ages of sport Atv’s. I have no hope that they will rise again. I know the day is coming when Yamaha pulls the plug. Heartbroken I am. It also makes me afraid to ride my 250r and 450r. I don’t want to break them. Oh as always Longlivethefourtrax250r
I love 4x4 ATV because I am older now.lols I dont enjoy hanging with young guys, who want to perform, noisy like I was when I was 20 years old.lols I want to trail with my wife and enjoy life, go to the highest trail, drink coffee with friends, laugh so hard, and go home.
1 vote for Yama 700 ! More fun !more shifting ! Keeps ya young even if your far from it !! 50+ is young lol Hope your feeling better ! We missed y’all Sat ‘
In what category is a sports car better than an SUV, pickup truck, or a 4 door sedan? Almost none. The only reason someone buys a sportscar is for going fast and having fun. The same goes for sport quads. You don't buy a sport quad for hauling camping gear, for rock crawling, or for deep mud pits. You buy it for sliding around corners and flying down wooded trails. Utility quads are great for work and harder more technical terrain, but they will never be as fun as a sport quad. I have ridden utility ATVs all my life and thought they were awesome, until I experienced a sprtquad. They are a significantly more thrilling and a fun experience.
I’ve never owned a sport quad, only rode one a few times. I grew up on dirt bikes and I just got myself a Kodiak 450 this year for working and hunting around the property. I finally realized that I want to buy a sport quad for ripping around and having some fun but I’m sad to see the market for the new ones is just about dead. Although I most likely won’t buy a new one for a while my question is how do we bring back the sport quad? How do we get manufacturers to start producing them again? I would love to see more coming in at my local dealers and actually have a choice other than the raptor and the yfz. If we can all work together to do something to bring the market for them back what would you say we need to do?
I've had this conversation many times with some major players in the industry. The conclusion I've come to is this; Major OEMs are of the quad business. They don;t think they'd sell enough units to turn a profit which is why they left in the first place. I still think there's market, obviously there is if Yamaha is still in the game. But if anything new came out, I'd think it would be from someone like a CFMOTO or Kayo and an independent company producing on a smaller scale kinda Beta is doing with dirt bikes. There's other challenges too, ride areas aren't as plentiful, especially tracks where dirt bikes don't typically like to share track space with quads (which I understand). And then trails that used to be for ATVs have been widened out 90", rutted up, and theres 200hp machines with drunk drivers ripping through them.. It's not safe for quads anymore a lot of places.. I think if we see something new in adult size quads, there's a 90% chance it's Chinese.
I’m 53, I have 5 4 wheeler. 2 Grizzly one kodiak one big bear and favorite warriors 350 only reason because it’s old like me. But yessir I truly love tails riding most weekends. Anyone riding on Alabama holler at me!!
I want to try a sport quad, but don’t have the money yet. My kq can still kick some ass though. Ride it like it’s a quadzilla with 4wd! If I get the chance I’ll rip a sport quad one day for sure, but my king suits the rugged and muddy trails I’ve got. Good points though!
when you're in the middle of nowhere sorrounded by thick mud or a swamp sneaks up on you on the trail, you'll wanna take your words back real quick after trying to lift it around when you could put it in reverse and cruise out, you miss a whole other aspect of offroading and that's mudding, if your sports quad gets into anything slippery it losing traction and burrying those 10 inch wheels in the mud mainwhile even a 2x4 160 Quadrunner is playing around in that same mud. if you think utility quads are slow, don't be afraid to make it fast, 350 fourtrax bored out and jetted, slip on muffler, with bigger mud tires and you got a 400ex hyprid, even a 2x4 with nice mud tires will do ok plus you can slide it around, unlike the all-time 4x4 fourtrax's
I say this because with my experience just a 160 Quadrunner (2x4 btw) with some nice rear mud tires can still slide around and get rowdy but still go through a mud hole, want more power? be a man and put some work into it like a 300cc motor swap in my case
Just picked up my first quad earlier this year and boy are they fun to ride they're size allows you to go through narrower trails than SxS and yeah they're not as comfortable as ranchers but I kinda like how sport quads are more physical more engaging besides a modded 700 can take out most Side by sides out there 😂
My outty 650 smokes raptors in 500ft all day. We race quads here all the time, dirt, ice, and the fastest quad in 500ft is the renegade xxc 1000. The only one that can rival it is a banshee.
That takes care of 500ft in a straight line on a drag strip.. Sport ATVs are faster on trails.. That's why 4x4s run in the morning at GNCC and pro women on Sport ATVs catch pro men on 4x4s
I don’t have to watch this to know the reasons 1) they’re more fun 2) going fast is more fun3) gears are more fun4) jumping on something that doesn’t feel like shamoo is better 5) they’re more fun
My friend and I both bought new yfzs a couple months back and ride together atleast once a week hands down the most fun you can have with your pants on
