Thank you so much, you were a life save today. I have a oil leak and today I was in a rush and filled way too much oil (did not take the time to use the dipstick) . My old Nissan then proseeded to smoke bomb the whole neighbourhood. Then I found your video and the light bulb finally went on. I drained down the oil to 3/4 and let the engine run for 30 minutes. Problem solved.
Last year I bought a used long block for my 97 Accord 2.2 for under $80. The guy told me the engine idled poorly and had blue smoke coming from the tail pipe. Further inspection revealed excessive oil in one spark plug and oil seepage from the exhaust. Disassembled the engine and found a burnt exhaust valve probably due to oil coming through the piston oil control ring. Purchased a re-ring kit and went to work. Found #3 pistons rings totally shot out and replaced the burnt valve. Put the engine together and she started! I was so glad since this was my first project I ever did putting an engine together. I gave the car to my son to get around town when he’s not deployed in the military. I bought the car for a great deal with mechanical issues. The owner said the engine sounded like a rod bearing was going bad. When I removed the oil pan, it looked like Tinker Bell’s Dad was living in the oil pan...I still have the original engine in the garage. Maybe I can bring it back to life??🤔
I had massive plumes of smoke coming out and in a rush the day before I put about a 1/4 quart too much oil in the engine, I removed a little over a 1/4 quart and she's clear as a bell now, even with 286,000. Thanks for the tips.
Wow, thank you for this video. Very helpful. I had a car once. It was blowing out dark gray smoke from the tail pipe. The mechanics told me I had a blown gasket. I didn't know what that meant at the time. And then again, maybe the mechanics were blowing smoke in the air as well. Thank you for your video. Very helpful.
Dark Grey smoke shouldn't indicate headgasket. White sweet smoke does, and lots of it. Dark Grey or black sounds like a full filter issue or possibly fuel injector issues to a plethora nore involving the gas itself. However blue smoke= oil white smoke = headgasket, condensation. Grey/black smoke. Something bad probably. Lmao. I don't know a whole bunch but hope that helps. " yup, the engine certainly looks like an engine." 😅🤣
Thanks for this video. My 2013 Ford Flex loss power & then I saw some smoke coming from behind (mufflers) I pulled over immediately & shut it off, raised the hood, checked my oil, which was fine/normal, my antifreeze was still full in reserve tank, it never ran hot but did start rough idling too. Next day auto parts store put the check engine light machine on it & it gave codes for four O2 sensors. Next day had it towed to a shop parents have used for diagnostic & told them exactly what it was doing for them to waste my time to tell me the next day they didn’t put it on the machine because of the smoke (that I told them about the day before in their shop office) & that it had a blown head gasket. I find it crazy to say that when they didn’t even put it on the diagnostic machine or do any other testing besides there was smoke so it’s a blown head gasket. After watching this video, I’m really wondering if it just needs a catalytic converter & O2 sensors replaced as thought from taking by auto parts store for the check engine light little machine that said O2 sensors four to be exact. I don’t like getting the run around when I’m trying to get my car fixed before my child goes back to school Monday. I’m her transportation because she’s out of zone & no bus is provided. Hoping tomorrow I can find an honest mechanic that will diagnose the problem instead of guessing, I can’t afford a well I thought that was the problem. So many shops are still trying to get over on women & it’s pathetic. I know some about cars & they hate when I ask questions.
Biggest rip offs I have seen in life are auto repair shops. Be careful. If you have loss of power it might be good to check the catalytic converter to see if it is clogged. I was able to clean mine with a power drill and a round wire brush and same a lot of money. Might want to start there. If you have a clogged cat you can loos a lot of power, like not being able to drive past 60 mph, but a partially clogged one can rob gas mileage. So if a cat is clogged might that cause 02 sensor readings to be bad? I don't know. I long for the days when we didn't have cats and 02 sensors, but I suppose they will never return.....unless I go electric.
Well auto supply did the check engine light check & at first it said O2 sensors, so did the O2 sensors & then it said it was 2 specific coil packs, so did those. It had the power back but still a little smoke so was driving it about two blocks away & it threw a rod right before turning into the auto supply place, so now I need a dang on motor. My friend that works on cars asked me what was I doing with a used motor in my flex & I said what? He said the markings on the motor are like when you get a used motor from a junk yard. I never put a motor in my flex. Contacted Car Max & of course they’re giving me the run around about probably can’t pull up where they bought it from. Daughter’s dad told me a few weeks ago the salesman told him it was a rental car before they got it. But they didn’t tell me the one buying it. It only had 10,056 miles supposedly when I bought it but if it was a used motor, no telling how many miles it really had. I have never blown a motor in any of my cars.
You can add this one to the list: the fuel pressure regulator. If this goes out and stays in the open position, your engine will be flooded with fuel (as in it is running too rich) and cause white smoke to come out of the tailpipe. Expect a noticeable decrease in fuel economy and for the car to quickly sputter out and not want to start (or start and run very poorly) after a day or two.
@@Mit_Reklaw It can, yes. Like with the fuel pressure regulator staying open, a stuck open fuel injector will eventually allow excess fuel into the combustion chamber and cause the engine to run rich. A bad fuel injector can also lead to engine overheating so it is something you want to get taken care of fairly quickly if that is in fact what's gone out.
Thanks for your input... I thought a stuck-open injector would cause it to smoke black. Would a bad fuel regulator also cause it to run hot? Ive checked my injectors and are not stuck open. Replaced my fuel pump and having same issues. Vehicle turns on but cranks a few times before it does. It doesn't really get hot but i notice coolant level gets low...
Thank you for your clear explanations and for clean language throughout! Too bad it is so hard to find channels like this, but i definitely subscribed.
white smoke doesn't always mean bad head gasket/cracked block or head. It may be condensation as he said but most description say after car is fully warmed up it should disappear.. not always the case some cars just have a light thin white smoke every time on colder days. My 04 BMW M3 I noticed a thin white smoke and it was more apparent when I went catless during cold weather season. and it doesn't go away. looked at atleast 10 other videos of same car with exhaust videos and they all do it. doesn't lose any coolant level either so I figured combustion + cooler weather when those hot gasses comes out they produce steam and makes em smoke/spit a bit of water in your tail pipe.
White smoke can also be from stuck open injectors. I had this and watching all the videos thought is was coolant but it wasn't. Two of my injectors were dumping fuel and it must have been going straight into the exhaust and also into my engine oil. My engine oil was full of gas and I changed the oil and replaced the two injectors. I did crank this car over a lot and run it trying to figure things out and all that time I was dumping fuel. So I think hot fuel vaporizes and comes out the exhaust pipe as white putrid smoke. Other video's attest to this.
Another way to check for a worn block or piston rings is adding Lucas heavy oil stabilizer to your engine oil and let the engine warm up if the smoke goes away and your engine harmonizes out and starts running better it may be time for a rebuild I did this with my 76 f150 and started yelling about it for a while when it ran smooth and the smoke went away
You might want to consider teaching auto mechanics in the future. You have a gift to teach. Maybe when you're more up in years. I enjoy all of your videos, I learn a lot from you. thanks.
I have an option on a Chev 3800 SUV. Neighbor was in an accident 310000 klms. If he doesn't change his mind I have a project car this summer. I'll DYI'ER mechanically and body work. I do not plan to put big money in it. Good to know causes of different colors of smoke. I learn a lot from you and the other mechanics on youtube.
You are definitely spot on because I already knew that my CO2 sensor needed to be replaced and the check engine light has been on for almost 2 years and I knew the whole time, that's exactly what it was but it just now started to really cause problems with using a lot of fuel, the Gray smoke, rough idling, Etc but I would say the biggest thing now is the stuttering, fuel consumption and the gray smoke if it has a gas smell to it. This tells me that I'm very lucky and blessed and I better hurry up and get this fixed and come up with the money any way possible and pray that I don't need a new catalytic converter because it's a 2005 Lexus ES330 and if I'm not mistaken, I've got like three or four catalytic converters on my car! Thank you for this information
I think you have 4 O2 sensors and maybe 2 CATs in different locations in the exhause. Do not run a car if you do not know why the Check light is on.. yes you can cause damage or ruin the engine. Gas in the exhaust will ruin the CAT.
@@danc2014 this is so embarrassing to admit but that post was from 2 years ago and I have not gotten anything fixed under the hood. I can honestly say that it hasn't gotten any worse. The check engine light came on because of the O2 sensor, I had it checked and that's the code that came back. And you are right, I do have four of those and two catalytic converters. I know one thing, these Lexus' our amazing cars. I feel bad that that car has treated me so good and I haven't been able to afford to do what I need to do with it. It's just a situation I got left in as a single mother. I don't know how much they have changed over the years but mine is a 2005 and it's got over 200,000 miles
@@mplsfarmer you are Point Blank awesome you know a lot and you're good at it to be giving people free advice that is true thank you for your services here at this this website I recommended highly
Great advice well thought out and explained, how about a video on auto auctions and the steps you use from what to buy, bid, repair and sell, in all I enjoy your channel!!!
Always good to check the engine manual or ask the shop how much oil it needs, I have a motor with a stick thats not original and if you fill up the oil by the stick you put +1 extra liter than needed on the engine wich causes those issues you said.
I have a easy fix for you . Use my Turbofield Nano Treatment and your problem should be solved . 5 minute job . Have tried this on a Dodge Ram Diesel pick up which had as many miles on it . Smoke gone engine runs smoother with better mileage and tail pipe squeaky clean .
Too much engine oil .... finally a reason that I haven’t came across ,I just bought a car presented and have a fog machine going on with it and well it has no codes (handled them ) so I got it on the low ngl ,imma check the oil because I’m betting that’s what they messed up on ,thank you very much
Thank you so much. Now I know what could possibly be wrong with my car. I keep asking mechanics why my car is smoking and no one is giving me a straight answer.
Good video bro... now I got to figure out what it is.... lol . But yea my 04 Honda Accord is making white smoke when I turn it on every first time of the day and the check engine says it’s an air leak
Thanks for the Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you ever tried - Peyvery Phrenic Prevalence (do a google search)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for get your original hair color back and look young without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my close friend Aubrey after many years got great results with it.
Hi mate thank you for that nice explanation especially about the pcv valve ,only your explonations make to understand how it works . Ones again thank you for that 👌👌👌👌
My old Geo Spectrum was sucking transmission fluid into the carburetor from the transmission. A bad diaphragm on the vacuum system. Only on some models. Always something complicated for me.
You are phenomenal! your videos are great ,you're a nice guy. you explain everything to the extreme... love watching your videos learning a lot from you thank you. I totally subscribed a while ago!! That PCV elbow that you just showed quick is that on the back side of the intake on a 2015 Chevy Impala LTZ 3.6 VVT Flex Fuel motor?? I replaced the other breather valve ,that sits in the grommet. but I didn't replace the elbow you have in your hand if you wouldn't mind can you please respond to my problem I highly appreciate it.
Hey man!!! Great job on the videos. You make things simple and right to the point. Im over here fighting shrodigens box or whatever the hell his name is on how he doesnt need all this technology to diagnose a car properly. You get your hands dirty. I work as a Tech and appreciate the info you share. Sometimes we forget the basics in checking a car.
Yes sir I just subscribed and hit the bell this one video was all I needed to see to know and fix my problem thanks a lot I will be watching all your videos for educational purposes it can't hurt and will
Damn I just put oil in my 2005 Saturn ion and thick white smoke was coming out of the exhaust I took it to the shop thinking it’s a blown head gasket but now I’m Thinking it’s just way to much oil
Yea my 05 toyota camry started doing this again. I had the head gasket replaced already before. But I noticed at startup only sometimes not every time, white smoke comes out but its thick. Doesnt last that long though.
What did you do to fix it? Our Toyota Highlander is smoking thick cloud of smoke(no gas smell) only at startup but not every start-up, seems random when it does it. SUPER EMBARRASSING!
I have an 03 Camry that has one or two leaky valve guide seals. One thing I noticed with that problem, if I parked on a hill facing the front end down the hill and the car parked at an angle so the valve covers were sloped on the down hill but also to one side like the left side of the valve cover was on the down hill side, I got no puff of smoke in the morning. It was like, park on a slight hill with the font end sloping down hill and then jack the entire passenger side of the car up in the air about a foot. Maybe all it really would have taken was to jack up the passenger side of the car in the air about a foot to drain the oil to the left side of the valve train. I don't know. Maybe I just needed to park sloping the nose down the hill. It suggests to me that the passenger side seal or seals were leaky and with no oil covering the seal, none could leak through. That's my guess.
Thank you so much firslty for helping me diagnose 🙏🏽 I accidentally put way too much engine in my car and then BG buff of blue smoke and then a loss of power. Do I simply need to reduce the oil level, or is this a sign of more damage. Any advice most appreciated
I took off my throttle body for the first time and spilled coolant on the top of my engine , like at least 12oz and my exhaust has been blowing white smoke on a cold morning cold start and goes away once the engine is warm, my car doesn’t get hot, and doesn’t blow white smoke every time I start it. Just when it’s cold in cold weather.
I have white smoke on cold starts for 1-2 minutes. My car has 150k miles but has been well taken care of and has never overheated. Hoping that I don't have to replace the car it anytime soon.
Mine smoked a bit and stopped, then showed a stop sign later in the day and turned off, then started it again and took it home. Topped up the oil after a couple of hours because it was low, started it back on and it was alright, few minutes later it shows a check engine light and starts smoking(white/blueish). It says the depollution system is faulty, which usually means the fuel injector or fuel filter or pump. I completely changed the oil and replaced the filter but it still smokes and jerks, will open it up soon to look at the top gasket
Ugh.. this smoke in my car is driving me crazy. 2017 Pathfinder with the VQ35DD engine smokes a little bit after start and then it's gone. However, sometimes when I am 5 to 10 mins into a drive, it will suddenly start smoking white very badly to the point where it's just a huge ball of smoke coming out of the exhaust. I changed the PCV valve, but it keeps doing it. I suspect the valve stem seals. The car is consuming a little bit of oil but nothing alarming. It doesn't seem to be consuming coolant.
Thank You! Very informative Video! But,... You mentioned Engine issues on Toyota’s Newer cars? If so, I’m quite sure... TOYOTA will have a Re-Call out on such matter!! I happen to have a 2004 Lexus ES 330 with 345,000 Miles and it still purrs 🥰 and I know that it has a Valve cover leakage. So I took it for a local shop for the yearly NYS inspection, I was told that it needs a new head gasket?? Really?? Hmm I’ll tell my husband about it. 🙄🤨 and that’s why I ended up here. So, again... Thank You 💝
my kid put 10 litres of oil in his 2001 silverado.. he ran it for about 5 minutes then it died... we drained the oil and put 5 ltrs back in and now were getting white smoke,....Im going to try the pcv and run it for a couple hours, and hope it works.. thx for vid,, any other suggestions it never over heated so i dont think its a gasket issue, but there is toonees of smoke..
Sir I am having this issue turbo is gone after I paid for a seal on my head gaskette. I was told it was Ok to drive just won't have the same power. Well it won't go up a steep hill and just started smoking like a dark grey kind of color.
Can you discuss backfire on a car when starting? I had that problem and the tech could not find anything with the computer scan I(odd, thought it would record that), and then white smoke, went away and tech said nothing wrong with car but replaced radiator cap, new spark plugs, fuel injector cleaning and throttle body cleaning. I don't think they took apart the fuel injector but maybe just sprayed in cleaner. Just curious why their scan computer did not record it.
